About the Department of Chemistry
The Department of Chemistry, SCSVMV offers B.Sc., M.Sc.,
M.Phil., and Ph.D programmes in Chemistry. To present and
promote science and spirituality in a balanced manner so as to
ignite and steer the young minds in the pathway of science and
technology. The department has highly qualified, motivated and
research oriented faculty members. The department has a research
project Funded by UGC-DAE-CSR, Kalpakkam. The department
has sophisticated instruments facility such as cyclic voltammetry,
fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV/visible spectroscopy,
spectrofluorometer, flame photometry, infra red CO2 analyzer,
COD reactor, water quality analyzer, ultrasonic interferometer.
The department organizes various seminars and workshops funded
by different funding agencies.

An invited lecture on Amine-Boranes: Synthesis and Applications on 26.12.2018
The Department organized an invited lecture on Amine-Boranes: Synthesis and Applications on
26.12.2018. Prof. Dr. P. V. Ramachandran, Department of Chemistry, Purdue university,USA gave
brief description about the preparation of Amine -boranes and its reducing properties in addition to this
he explained briefly about chemistry of fluorides. He fascinatingly shared his ongoing research work on
drug-delivery microbes with the students and he assured the students and faculty to share about his
present research on drug delivery microbes in the next invited lecture. On the whole the entire lecture
was very much beneficial for not only students and the research scholars and also for faculty members.
II M.Sc, III B.Sc Chemistry and Physics students (120 students) participated and got benefitted.
The Department of Chemistry organized an invited lecture on Organic Electrochemistry and
Electrosynthesis on 24.12.2018. Dr. D. Vasudevan, Principal Scientist CSIR – Central Electro Chemical
Research Institute, Karaikudi, as a resource person elaborately explained about the basics of
electrochemistry - oxidation and reduction reactions, importance of cyclic voltammetry and
electrosynthesis. He explained clearly how inorganic elements carry on redox reactions in presence of
organic compounds as aqueous medium. He motivated the students how to link organic and
electrochemistry field with some examples like preparation of Nylon 6 etc. The entire lecture was more
interesting for students and helpful for research scholars to move towards organic electrochemistry field.
II M.Sc, III B.Sc and II B.Sc Chemistry (120 students) participated and got benefitted about the
organic Electrochemistry and electrosynthesis.
The Department of Chemistry organized a special lecture on Masking Techniques in Analytical
Chemistry on 10.08.2018. Dr.J.Karthikeyan, Associate Prof, Dept. of Chemistry, Sathyabama
Institute of Science and Technology was the resource person and gave brief description on masking
techniques in analytical chemistry .His talk motivated the students to carry out projects related to
this field and to publish papers in the reputed journals. All B.Sc and M.Sc students (160 students)
participated actively in the special lecture and gained knowledge about the masking analytical
techniques.

Industrial visit
The Department of Chemistry arranged an Industrial visit to International Institute of Biotechnology and
Toxicology (IIBAT), Padappai for I M.Sc students (21 students) with 5 faculty members on 28.02.2019. This
visit was mainly focused to familiarize the students about the principles of biotechnology and toxicology. The
on-site guiding staff was very supportive to the students and explained about the instrumentation techniques
of GCMS, AAS etc. Pathology ,Animal toxicology and the other wings of biotechnology in detail. During the
visit, students actively interacted and learnt about environmental safety data on crop care protection. They
also learnt about GLP (Good Laboratory Practices). This tour was highly useful for the students to gain the
practical knowledge about the working of an industry and this will help students to mould themselves for
their career and bringing about a positive change in thinking and practice in specializing their skills.
International Institute of Biotechnology and Toxicology (IIBAT),Padappai on 28.02.2019
49 students (III B.Sc) and 4 faculty members from the Department of Chemistry visited Hatsun Milk
Agro Chemicals, Vellaigate, Kanchipuram on 22.03.2019. This unit was mainly focused on the
Pasteuration process and quality control of the milk. Mr. Sekar, The quality control officer explained
the pasteurization process of the milk and also different stages to determine the quality of the milk to
the students. During the session, students interacted with the Quality Control Officer effectively and
learnt the chemistry involved in the pasteurization process and other quality control techniques. This
was highly useful for the students to gain the practical knowledge about the working of an industry
and this will help them to prepare themselves for their career.

Spiritual (EPIC) Museum - photo gallery visit at Vedal on 08.02.2019
The Department of Chemistry I M.Sc (21 students), I B.Sc (34 students) and 5 faculty
members visited the photo gallery at Spiritual (EPIC) Museum at Vedal for a field study on
08.02.2019. Students assembled at the University Campus by 9.30 am and reached the
museum around 10 am. The Museum In-charge Mr. Sri Krishnan gave a brief introduction
about the museum. It was an informative, interesting and a successful visit. Students learnt
more about our Tradition, Culture and the Story of India's two great Epics Mahabharata
and Ramayana.
Final year M.Sc and B.Sc students of Department of Chemistry participated in the Syngene
International (India‘s largest and the only listed contract research organization recruitment drive)
for the research association trainee post held in SCSVMV on 20.12.2018. 25 students from Arignar
Anna Govt. College, Cheyyar and Walajapet also participated in the recruitment drive along with
our students. online exam was conducted as a preliminary level in which, 40 students were attended,
out of 40 students 9 students got selected for 2nd level GD(group discussion). Finally 3 M.sc
students were selected from our Chemistry department and 2 students from Arignar Anna
Govt.College, Cheyyar got placed.

Career guidance programme
Career guidance programme for final year B.Sc,M.Sc & M.Phil students was organized by the Department of Chemistry during 19 th&20th March
2019 at MCA seminar hall. Mrs. M. Parameswari, Asst. Prof, Department of Chemistry acted as a resource person and gave a lecture on the topic
“Resume writing techniques” in the first session (19-03-2019). She explained briefly about how to prepare resume for various job like Bank,
Industries, Marketing etc., Mr.V.Santhanam, Asst. Prof, Dept. of Chemistry was the resource person for the second session and gave a lecture about
“Body language”. He explained how face reactions and body actions influences the career and also discussed about personality development.
Mrs.C.Jeyalakshmi, Asst. Prof, Dept. of Chemistry handled the third session on 20-03-2019 with the title “Tailor your Talk” & “What Interests
you?” She addressed the students how to effectively answer a question in an interview and various skills involved in a verbal communication. She
made the students to do some self activities and briefed about the difference between ambition and attitude. Prof. Dr. K.Sivakumar, Head,
Department of Chemistry, SCSVMV acted as the Resource person during the fourth session (20-03-2019). He highlighted the opportunities for
chemistry in the real scenario and gave ideas for how to prepare for competitive examinations and focused on the need for higher studies and the
importance of research. Finally he gave some tips on interview techniques. The aim of the program was to develop and to increase the confidence level
and clear decision making tendencies among the students after finishing their course.
In connection with the Government of India, to ensure 100% polling in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections, a
voter awareness programme was organized by The Hindu (Tamil) magazine in SCSVMV on 18.04.2019.
Thiru. P. Ponniah I.A.S., and District Magistrate of Kancheepuram participated in the awareness program
and explained elaborately about the importance of voting in the Loksabha election for the students and also
discussed about Indian democracy. B.Sc (120 students) and M.Sc (21 students ) participated in the awareness
programme and got benefitted about the importance of voting and it is the duty of each citizen in our country.
The class coordinators also participated along with the students.
Voters awareness program
The department of Chemistry, SCSVMV organized Training Programme on “Online Labs” for school
teachers on 15.05.2019 in association with Center for Research in Advanced Technologies for
Education, Amrita University. Mr.Pantina Chandrasekar, Coordinator, Center for Research in
Advanced Technologies for Education, Amrita University, delivered a lecture and training program on
Online Labs for science experiments and language practice. Five school teachers from various
Government and private schools in and around Kanchipuram and two M.phil scholars participated in
the training programme and got benefited.

Celebrations
UG and PG students of the Department of Chemistry celebrated Pongal festival on 11.01.2019 in front of the
chemistry lab to portray the tradition. Pongal is the harvest festival, which is dedicated to the sun-god. People show
their gratitude to the God for the year’s cultivation of crops with the grand celebrations and happiness of the harvest
day. The most important part of this harvest festival is cooking delicious pongal with newly harvested grains.
Sakkarai pongal and Venpongal were prepared by the students. Both pongal were cooked in clay pots on stoves made
with stones and fire wood. When it started to boil over, everyone shouted out "pongalo pongal" happily and shared
their happiness with everyone. During the time of celebration Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Dr. V.S.
Vishnu Potty came in person and shared his happiness with our department faculties and students. Dr.S.Balaji,
Dean, Faculty of Science, Presided over the pooja. Prof.Dr.K.Sivakumar ,Head, Dept. of Chemistry and all the
faculty members actively participated. A pleasing moment was created when the devotional slogan was sung by
Kishore Kumar, of III B.Sc. The day ended with a grand Pooja and prasadhams were distributed to all the students.
In connection with this pongal celebration students conducted some events like Rangoli, art from waste, musical
chair, water filling etc. Mr.B.Muthukumaran and Mrs.C.Jeyalakshmi, Asst. Prof., Dept.of Chemistry, coordinated
the celebration.
The Department of Chemistry performed Saraswathi Pooja on 17.10.2018 in UG and Research lab
premises of the department. Both UG and PG students cleaned and decorated the lab for Pooja. The celebration
started at 10.30 am in the Research lab and then staff room and finally at UG lab, Dr. S. Balaji, Dean, Faculty
of Science, Presided over the pooja. Dr.T.Venugopal, COE participated in the pooja celebration. All the students
and faculty members participated. A pleasing moment was created when the devotional slogan was sung by
Kishore Kumar, of III B.Sc. Pens and prasadhams were distributed to all the students on the day of grand pooja.

Fresher's Day Celebrations for the First Year B.Sc students and M.Sc students of the Department of Chemistry was organized by the UG and PG
students on 27.07.2018 between 1.00 pm-2.30 pm at Sri Adi Sankara Auditorium. The aim of the grand event was to help the freshers to allay fear and
develop friendship among the seniors. Various games were conducted for the fresher’s in the main lab of the Chemistry department between 10.00 am to
12.30 pm before the freshers day function. The programme was inaugurated with the welcome address by Prof. Dr.K.Sivakumar Head, Department of
Chemistry. He wished the fresher’s and insisted the students that they have to develop multi disciplinary skills and assimilate knowledge from the core
subject. He introduced all the staff members of the department of chemistry to the fresher’s and enlightened about the department facilities for their studies
and advised the students to utilize it in a proper way. In addition to that he insisted the importance of existing mentoring activities to all the students of
the department and advised the students to be mentally free from any stress or any other problem. Mr.V.Santhanam, Asst. professor Dept. of Chemistry
motivated the students for CSIR exam preparation and also for other competitive exams. B.Sc and M.Sc students shared their thoughts about the
department with their juniors. All the faculty members of the Department of Chemistry gave their hearty wishes to the freshers. The programme ended with
National anthem and Tea & snacks were distributed to the students.

Students Individual Performance • NSS volunteers of I B.Sc and II B.Sc Chemistry (21students) were actively participated in the APJ Abdul Kalam birth
awareness rally held on 15.10.2018 at Kanchipuram organized by the NSS of SCSVMV.
• Abirami(I B.Sc) has participated in case study event in ELITE 2018 - 4th National Level Technical Symposium on 12.10.2018 organized by the Department of Computer Science and applications, SCSVMV.
• More than 30 students from the Department of Chemistry were participated in the “Tamilzhar Parampariya Thiruvizha” organized by the Department of Tamil, SCSVMV on 09.01.2019-11.01.2019 and won the following prizes. Pandi D.Sonali (II year) - I Prize J.Iswarya (III year) – II Prize
• M.Adirai (I year) won state level 5th prize in drawing competition conducted by Kaviarasar Kalai tamil sangam in connection with 72nd Independence day celebration.
• In connection with the Government of India awareness programme on National Voters Day -2019, The Department supported the local authoratative body by conducting various competitions like Essay, Oratorical, Drawing in various tiltles related with the importance of voting/Democracy on 22-01-2019,more than 30 students were participated in the competitions. The students won the following prizes.

Farewell celebration for the final year B.Sc and M.Sc students of the Department of Chemistry was organized by
the UG and PG students on 25.04.2019 between 4.00 pm-5.30 pm at Sri AdiSankara Auditorium. The function
begun with prayer song and Prof.S.Balaji, Dean (Faculty of Science) felicitated and motivated the students with
few words on their carrier after the completion of course. Later, a video clip was screened for students in which all
the memories of students have been recalled. Some of the students shared their thoughts and experience in the
department during their course period.
Prof.Dr.K.Sivakumar Head, Department of Chemistry congratulated and wished all success to the final year
students for their future endeavors. He advised the students to be well disciplined, well mannered, punctual and to
be a responsible citizen of the society with a positive attitude. All the faculty members of the Department of
Chemistry conveyed their hearty wishes to the final year students. Various games were conducted for the final year
students in the main lab of the Chemistry department between 2.00 pm to 3.30 pm. The program ended with
National anthem.
