Introduction
Our chapter was established on June 2011 by students studying Optics and optoelectronics and Ph.D. students
studying Quantum optics and optoelectronics at Faculty of mathematics and physics, Charles University in
Prague. It is the first SPIE student chapter in the Czech Republic.
During the first year of the existence of our chapter we have been testing the possibilities that SPIE student
membership provides and trying to work effectively with Activity grant.
This year we would like to expand our SPIE Student Chapter to about 22 members.
Chapter activities
1. 23 September 2011: Visiting lecture
Dr. Ralph B. James from BNL (2010 SPIE President) visited our University with a lecture on the research in
semiconductor detector materials based on CdZnTe.
2. 4 October 2011: First official chapter meeting
Officer election, discussion about chapter activities. We decided to buy 250 of promotional pens. This amount
will be enough for a next few years and we're not going to buy them every year.
3. 20 October 2011: Party with younger students about studying Optics and Optoelectronics
at our faculty
Presentations for younger students about SPIE, studying Optics and Optoelectronic, faculty student projects,
refreshments
4. 1 December 2011: Participation in faculty Open day
Presentation of optical experiments for high-school students
5. 13 December 2011: Annual chapter meeting with refreshments
Before-Christmas chapter meeting of student members and our advisor Dr. Jan Franc. Assessment of past
events, planning of future activities for 2012.
6. 18 April 2012: Chapter meeting
Invitation of future members to our chapter (there are probably 5-7 new members, new membership planned
from May 2012). Discussion about future activities.
7. 25 April 2012: Company visit
Very interesting visit of Crytur Ltd. ( http://crytur.com , Turnov, Czech rep.). This company is engaged in
scintillation materials and detectors, laser rods and other laser components, crystal based precise optics and
mechanics, sapphire profiles...
Others
SPIE Optics+Photonics 2012: Václav Dědič and Martin Kozák visited the SPIE conference in San Diego and they
participated in Leadership Workshop. Martin Kozák took advantage of the Officer Travel Grant to attend this
conference.
SPIE Security + Defence 2011 (Prague, Czech rep.): five chapter members were acting as room monitors
during the conference.
Future activities for 2012
What we will organize:
Beginning of May Membership renewal, adding new members
May Activity grant application
21-25 May Participation in outdoor seminar of Institute of Physics of Charles university. Several
chapter members will perform with lectures on optics there.
Fall 2012 Visiting lecture (not specified yet)
Student Chapter 2012-2013 Officers Election.
Party with younger students about studying Optics and Optoelectronics at our faculty
Participation in faculty Open day

What we would like to do or organize (probably in the fall 2012):
Promotion of physics, optics, engineering and science in general as good career for young people at
high schools (Young people in the Czech Republic don’t want to study technical and natural sciences)
Try to establish a connection and possible cooperation with other SPIE student chapter.
Take the advance of the Officer travel grant (Lukáš Nádvorník) and Author travel grant (Jakub
Zázvorka) to attend SPIE Optics+Photonics 2012, incl. Leadership Workshop
