Annual Report is a great tool to look at last year’s activities of Slezská Diakonie. There were many different activities in social field within our organization and they are all carefully mapped on the following pages.
Last year in April, we launched a completely new service in the town of Ostrava: the Rainbow House compound offering services of day care centre, home for people with disabilities and respite care to as many as 70 users. It was not easy to find so many users at the beginning of the year, but the places were gradually occupied and at the end of the year, we even had to start looking for new premises to extend our services.
We initiated a new activity during last year: Foster Family Programme. Foster families decided to give a piece of happiness to children who have been growing up without proper family background, quite often in social care institutions. Family is one of priorities which Slezská Diakonie has based its services upon. In 2013, Slezská Diakonie signed 100 contracts within which we are providing foster parents with trainings, babysitting, contacts of providers of specialised services related to foster care and guardianship, as well as other activities.
Last year, we also organized a fundraising collection with the aim to purchase windows and desks for a school in the village of Dongobesh in Tanzania. The collection lasted four months and with the funds collected, we managed to purchase 55 desks and windows for the school.
We keep emphasising the quality of our services. Many of our centres successfully passed quality-related consultations and audits and we also terminated the “Learning Slezská Diakonie” project which offered trainings and educational activities to our staff and to employees of other social institutions.
We started preparatory works aimed at establishing the Diaconal and Educational Centre in the town of Český Těšín. This is a long-term project we have been striving after for several years. We managed to obtain generous financial support of European Funds to cover the cost of building works. The centre will provide premises for social work, trainings and other cultural activities.
2013 was Year of the Bible in Slezská Diakonie. Various Bible-related competitions were organized, as well as several lectures focused on the significance of the Bible for our clients, staff members and public. All our centres joined the Bible Writing project. Importance of the Bible in our day-to-day lives was also the main topic of two spiritual conferences we organized.
We were trying to bring light to people in need during whole last year. Our heartfelt thanks go to all of you who are helping us accomplish this mission, giving us your support and assistance.
Mgr. Zuzana Filipková, Ph.D. Director of Slezská Diakonie

Profile of our organization
Slezká Diakonie is working in the fields of social services, education and social and legal protection of children. The organization has been developing its activities since 1990 when it reassumed former diaconal service of the Silesian Evangelical Church of Augsburg Confession. Slezká Diakonie is operating mainly in the Moravian-Silesian region, but we extended our services to the South-Moravian region and to Olomouc region as well. More than 60 centres of Slezská Diakonie offer 101 registered social services. Our organization being a sole legal body, all the centres are managed in a centralized way by the Headquarters of Slezská Diakonie located in the town of Český Těšín. Nearly 600 staff members ensure services for various target groups. In 2013, the services of Slezská Diakonie gave support to almost 8.000 clients, including pupils of schools for children with special needs and families involved in our Foster Families programme.
Once the Act on social and legal protection of children amended, Slezská Diakonie entered the field of services provided to foster families. In February 2013, our organization extended its assignment in this field by foster care. Team of experts involved in our Foster Families programme is given methodological guidance by the Section of Vice-Director for Social Work and is divided in separate branches located in eight towns throughout Moravian-Silesian region. Training activities for external participants are implemented within the Foster Families programme too.
In 2013, Slezská Diakonie successfully terminated the “Learning Slezská Diakonie” educational project financed by HRD OP. As a follow-up initiative, we launched another project under the title “Trainings for Social Services Providers in Těšín Silesia Region” with the aim to provide employees of Slezská Diakonie and other six regional social services providers with professional trainings in the field of work with various target groups, managerial skills and quality management. The project will be implemented in the period October 1, 2013 – June 30, 2015 and is co-funded by European Union within the HRD OP programme.
High quality of service provision is a significant and crucial pillar of activities developed by Slezská Diakonie. In 2013, continuous methodological support was given to particular services within consultations, quality audits and activities developed by “guilds” of Slezská Diakonie, specialists and quality supporters. Several dozen quality-related consultations took place within our organization, as well as seven 3-day audits. Quality supporters have been actively involved in consultations and other methodological activities within our organization. In addition to quality standards in social services, we also started working on standards of social and legal protection of children which came into force after the amendment of the Act on Social and Legal Protection of Children.

Slezská Diakonie has always been very active in the field of international cooperation concerning social and spiritual work. International cooperation comprises several levels - networking, exchange of experience within internships, international volunteering and education. The management of Slezská Diakonie supports this kind of activity and considers it as an incentive for employees and a great enrichment to Slezská Diakonie's social services as well. All experience gained during business trips are useful and applicable and we try to implement them in our activities as soon as possible. We often invite our partners and guests from abroad to see our work in the Czech Republic and we usually ask them to have a speech at Slezská Diakonie's events. Such speech usually concerns a topic related to social work or spiritual work.
In September 2012, the director of Slezská Diakonie Mgr. Zuzana Filipková, Ph.D. was elected as the president of European Association of Urban Missions (EAUM) at a conference in Stockholm. Slezská Diakonie has been cooperating with EAUM since 2000. Main task of EAUM consists in exchanging contacts within associated urban missions. Committee meetings take place every year; in 2013 it was in Bergen. Next conference of EAUM was discussed at the meeting and is supposed to take place in Ostrava in 2016.Deputy director for social work Ing. et Mgr. Romana Bélová is a member of the Eurodiaconia's committee. Eurodiaconia looks to develop dialogue and partnership among members and influence and engage with the wider society. In 2013 some employees of Slezská Diakonie participated in four Eurodiaconia's seminars: for example Europe 2020, Human Resources, Financing in Brussels and AGM (Annual General Meeting) in Berlin. Slezská Diakonie is also a member of the European Association of Service Providers of People with Disabilities (EASPD). In 2013, one employee of Slezská Diakonie participated in the international conference “Employment of Persons with Disabilities” in Istanbul and introduced other participants to activities of Slezská Diakonie.
Another business trip was organized in May: our employees presented the work of Slezská Diakonie at the Kirchentag in Germany and they had a nice opportunity to exhibit a classic car which was repaired in the context of social entrepreneurship of Slezská Diakonie. Three employees visited City Mission in Sweden to get experience in the field of social entrepreneurship which has been developing in Slezská Diakonie.Several employees visited Italy (senior home realized within the Leonardo da Vinci project) and France (centre for people with dementia). Cooperation with ČALS (Czech Alzheimer Society) within the Reminisce with Family project focused on exchange of experience in the field of similar services. The region of Bruntál sent four employees and two clients within Grundtvig to Cardiff in Wales to participate in a conference “Learning disability Wales”.
We very much appreciate the fact that we have managed to develop several long-term partnerships during the nearly 25-year functioning of Slezská Diakonie.Every year Naemi-Wilke Stift from Guben brings Christmas gifts to clients of Slezská Diakonie. In spring 2013 Czech delegation went to Guben and had the chance to see social services provided by our partner organization.Stiftung Eben-Ezer in Lemgo, also one of our long-term German partners, invited a group of our employees to participate in the ceremonial appointment of Rev. Dr. Bertolt Haase as a new director of Stiftung Eben-Ezer.Several times already, our employees had the opportunity to visit Birmingham City Mission: last visit took place in autumn 2013. Our long term cooperation is based on reciprocal exchange stays.

International department of Slezská Diakonie organises programmes promoting personal non- formal learning. The programme of International Voluntary Year (INVY) and International Voluntary Year in Tanzania aims to give the chance to young people without any differentiation in cognitive learning, which contributes to their spiritual, personal and professional development.
The programme also contributes to social, intercultural, societal and political learning. Receivers of this learning are beside the volunteers, professional workers, other national volunteers, users and their relatives and local community as well as the volunteers, of course. The programme opens the door for a new learning and to create the changes for new lives.
Slezská Diakonie as the coordinating organisation, hosts international volunteers in its placements and partner organisations and sends the Czech volunteers to the placements of EDYN (Ecumenical Diaconal Year Network) partner organisations. The programme promotes long-term service of around 10 to 12 months.
During the year 2013 we hosted in total 27 international volunteers coming from 6 different countries, from France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Sweden and Ukraine. From January to August 2013 we hosted 13 international volunteers who did their service from 1st of September 2012 to 31st of August 2013 in 11 different placements. From 1st of September 2013 we welcomed 14 further international volunteers who served until 31st of August 2014 in 12 different placements.
At the end of February we held a 5-day mid term seminar for the international volunteers. The seminar was organized in Slovakia with the EDYN partner organization 'The Ecumenical Council of Churches in Slovakia'. In total 25 international volunteers participated in the seminar. The aim of the seminar was to evaluate the ongoing voluntary service programme.
During January and March 2 Study visits were organised to the placements wherethe volunteers did their service. This gave a unique opportunity for young people to reflect on different social phenomena of the service of their peers so as to promote the involvement of the service users in joint activities with other volunteers.
At the beginning of March a three-day seminar for the supervisors of international volunteers was organised. The working sessions of this event focused on how to make the 'journey of accompanying the young people´ more supportive and responsive and open to two-way learning.
In the middle of June the pre-departure seminar for the Ukrainian volunteers took place in Ukraine. The seminar aimed to prepare the volunteers for long-term voluntary service. At the end of June, a 3 day long evaluation seminar took place. The seminar was an opportunity for international volunteers as well their supervisors to participate. This event can be seen as the closing event of the volunteer´s journey and gave an opportunity to look back to their year's service and draw on the results for their future orientation after coming back home. At the end of July 1 day pre-departure seminar for three volunteers who went to their service to Denmark and Portugal was organised. At the end of August a married couple went for 9 months voluntary service to our partner organisation to Denmark. At the beginning of October a male volunteer went to do his one-year service with our partner organisation in Portugal.
At the beginning of September a 6 days arrival seminar for the volunteer generation 2013-2014 was organised. The seminar was combined with an intensive Czech language course. At the beginning of November first study visit to the placements where the volunteers will do their service was held.
The year was closed with a Christmas meeting in which the volunteers as well as their supervisors and mentors participated.

INVYT aims to change people´s perception towards other people, and the world and to increase awareness about different cultures. This process of learning changes the individuals´ attitudes and values and also enables them to know themselves better. By demonstrating good praxis we want to show that volunteering makes sense.
The programme has been developing in the light of a 3 partner co-operation: Slezská Diakonie, The church congregation of SECAC in Třinec and LEA in Tanzania.
A three-partner meeting took place since January 2013 in order to discuss and design the concept of the programme and agree to the involvement of all the partner organisations. At the end of June a feasibility visit was made to the LEA organization in Tanzania. The representative of Slezská Diakonie and the church congregation in Třinec were hosted by LEA. The visit gave an opportunity to get to know the local context. Both partners could discuss the various aspects of a volunteer´s path in details. During the summer a project application which prepared which was submitted at the beginning of September to the European Commission, EACEA- Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency.
Meanwhile we worked on the whole conception of the programme including all its parts. Our project has been approved in December which enables us to send 2 Czech volunteers for 9 months to ́ LEA´.

In 2013, the first Slezská Diakonie centre in the Region of Bruntál, Krnov, Nový Jičín celebrated its 15th anniversary. On this occasion, a beneficial concert was organized and the local Krnovské Listy newspaper published a special appendix focused on activities of Slezská Diakonie in the town of Krnov. The Volunteer Centre project was blooming in 2013 and the centre mediated assistance of 101 volunteers in various social services and hospitals in the towns of Krnov and Město Albrechtice.
MATANA early care counselling centre extended its services and published an appealing informational material in cooperation with other early care counselling centres of Slezská Diakonie. RÚT Krnov and RÚT Bruntál social rehabilitation centres extended their services focused on people with mental illnesses. In Bruntál, we managed to establish new public showers, mobile wardrobe and laundry for people living on the street or in precarious conditions. The project was funded by the Bruntál Municipality.
Thanks to financial support of the Moravian-Silesian region, we purchased a stairlift for the EFFATHA Krnov socio-therapeutic workshops, which made them accessible to immobile clients. Within the „Common Steps Towards Job“ project of the RÚT Bruntál social rehabilitation centre, the regional financial aid allowed us to employ twelve adults with disabilities in local laundry.
Thanks to Tereza Maxová Foundation for Children, we implemented the following projects: “Crisis Aid in Distress in the Regions of Město Albrechtice and Osoblaha” (financial support amounting to 50.000 CZK) and “We Want to Grow up at Home,Not in Orphanage” (financial support amounting to 100.000 CZK).
Moravian-Silesian region and municipalities of Město Albrechtice region supported considerably the opening of a new service – Low-Threshold Centre for Children and Young People in Město Albrechtice Region. Since September 1, 2013 the centre has been offering both ambulant and outreach services in nine municipalities of the Město Albrechtice region. By request of the Department of Social and Legal Protection of Children in Krnov, our SOCIAL ASSISTANCE centre Krnov, Rýmařov launched a new follow-up service: respite care focused on children living in foster families.
ARCHA Nový Jičín sheltered housing successfully passed a quality inspection. Diaconia Sundays and special church services were organized in Nový Jičín, Krnov and Bruntál in cooperation with local churches. ARBENI Association of Parents and Friends which gives support to Slezská Diakonie centres in the regions of Krnov and Bruntál offered five employees and three clients the chance to travel to Cardiff, Wales and gain new experience. Our thanks go to all who brought us support and new opportunities in 2013.
In 2013, clients of EFFATHA Nový Jičín socio-therapeutic workshops launched a new project of a hand puppet theatre which brings smile to everybody who needs it: children at hospitals, kindergartens and other social services. The project enables the clients of the centre to assert themselves in an alternative way, integrate current life within our society, gain a feeling of being useful and realize that the sense of life consists not just in taking, but in giving as well. It is the very first hand puppet theatre run by people with intellectual disabilities in the Czech Republic.

Slezská Diakonie has been providing 22 registered social services in the Region of Těšínsko. These services comprise early care, day care centres, homes for people with disabilities, senior home, socio-therapeutic workshops, sheltered housing, support of independent living, social rehabilitation, personal assistance, respite care, low-threshold day centre, night shelter and outreach programme. Our clients are children and adults with disabilities, seniors and homeless people.
In 2013, a branch of a new service of Slezská Diakonie - Support of Foster Families - was established in Český Těšín. At the end of last year, the branch was working with as many as 26 foster families.
We managed to extend our services within support of independent living in Frýdek-Místek and established a new branch of this service in Ostrava. It became fully independent at the end of last year.
EFFATHA socio-therapeutic workshops were divided in two independent workshops - one in Frýdek-Místek and the other one in Frýdlant nad Ostravicí. This restructuration was motivated above all by our efforts to meet the needs of our clients commuting to workshops from the town of Pstruží.
In cooperation with the Region of Ostrava, Havířov, we kept running our Accompaniment Service and prepared the second edition of educational course for new volunteers, comprising 65 hours of trainings.
Region of Těšínsko joined celebrations of the anniversary of Bible Kralická via the trans-diaconia event of Bible Writing. In order to support quality of our service provision, several consultations, an audit of quality standards in social services and an ISO recertification audit took place. Many of our centres received help and assistance from both national and international volunteers.
The story of ZdeněkZdeněk was born with a severe intellectual disability and he will be 27 this year. Such is a „brief summary“ of his life. Up to the age of 25, he was living with his mother and younger sister in the town of Havířov. Each day of his life was filled with motherly love and care. He used to chat with his mother, watch all her everyday activities, make trips, draw, cut pictures - especially pictures of various types of cars, but mostly fire brigade cars, police cars and ambulance cars. Zdeněk is capable to distinguish all cars according to their brands and he is a real „pro“ in this field. In 2012, Zdeněk's mother fell ill and the life of the family changed. As the health condition of Zdeněk's mother grew worse and worse, she was not able to take care for him any more: she simply was not strong enough. Zdeněk was feeling uneasy and upset - he was angry with himself, with his mother, with the whole world. His aggressiveness, dissatisfaction and unrest were gradually increasing and his mother was not able to cope. She was hospitalized several times. We gradually found out the truth about Zdeněk's life thanks to talks with his mother who submitted an application for him to be placed in our facility. We met Zdeněk for the first time during a social survey in a sanatorium. He was rather silent. His mother was taking an oncological treatment and there was no other family member to take care for him. That is why a new phase of his life began in August 2012. Day after day, he was becoming acquainted with a new environment, other inhabitants and staff of our facility. Gradually he began to feel himself at home and, above all, he changed right before our eyes. Due to support and care of staff members, he learnt and is still learning to take care for himself (hygiene, clothes, food, etc.). He is a very active and social person. He likes walks and trips, going to theatre, cinema or swimming pool… He also regularly attends socio-therapeutic workshops in our day care centre where he has the opportunity to show his active approach. Cars still remain his hobby and he will surely never give them up: he draws them, cuts them out of paper, carries them in his pockets and likes to show them to others. He loves buying new cars. But on the first place, he is a social person who likes chatting, expressing his likes and dislikes in simple phrases, discussing what dinner there will be, etc. The most important is to keep chatting. He is fond of memories of his grandmother and his mother. We also talk about how she „left“, we remember together and feel sad. Nowadays, his aunt Míša is very important to him. He calls her on the phone and he is happy when she comes for visit. Sometimes he spends weekend at her place. Once back in our centre, he shouts with an immense smile on his face: „Why don't you say hello to me? I'm back HOME!“ Employee of the EBEN-EZER centre, Český Těšín

Services in the Region of Karvinsko are focused on families, mothers with children and lonely women who lost their homes, children and adults with disabilities, young people who spend most part of their free time on the street, and people living in socially excluded areas. Recently, we have focused on work with foster families as well: by the end of 2013, we signed 40 new agreements with foster parents.
Families with children and people living in excluded areas are supported by our social assistance service, KONTAKT outreach programme and ON LINE Streetwork. We have been enhancing social work in POHODA and ON LINE low-threshold facilities.
The early care counsellor employed in the EUNIKA early care centre has been commuting as far as the region of Frýdek-Místek to give assistance to families with small children. Because of growing number of people interested in our services, the number of families using our early care services has increased from 12 to 15.
Our thanks go to all sponsors who support our activities with financial or material donations. We also have great esteem for disinterested help of volunteers and regional boards' members, as well as local church congregations.
The number of people who were provided with services of our citizens' counselling centre in Karviná increased to as many as 1,000. They were mostly afflicted by debts, troubles among family members and threats of seizure of property.
We have extended the target group of clients aged under 45 in the EUNIKA day care centre in Karviná and we embellished premises of the HOSANA centre in Karviná in order to make the housing environment more cosy and ensure more privacy to our clients.
Shelters for women with children HANNAH in Orlová and SÁRA in Petrovice u Karviné have been facing increasing number of accommodation facilities that do not ensure any accompanying social programmes for their inhabitants.
Story of Matyášek (age 4)
The story of Matyášek and the EUNIKA day care centre began during summer holiday 2013 when he and his mother visited the centre for the first time. During holiday, there was no alternative to the service Matyášek had been attending so far, and that is why his mother decided to use our services. Already in our first meeting, she informed us that because of his autism, Matyášek has severe behavioural troubles with socialisation, concentration and others behavioural disorders. We were also warned of the bad eating habits of young Maty, as we called him.Indeed, Matyášek was considerably plaintive during the first few days and he was not interested in any activities or therapies. We had to encourage him to eat and we rarely managed to make him do so. He was afraid of going to toilets. However, within less than one month, Matyášek gradually began to smile every now and then, he was eating both breakfast and lunch and seemed to be content despite of his disease. His ability to concentrate started to improve and he became interested in what was happening around him as well. Summer holiday passed and Maty “left” us to return to the centre he had been attending before. Within hardly one month, both Matyášek and his mother reappeared at the door of our day care centre and we were asked for readmitting Maty back into our service. Maty simply got so much used to us that he did not want to return to the previous facility. After he spent a while there, Maty's behaviour and overall adaptation unfortunately receded to their former state of disinterest, plaintiveness, unwillingness to eat and overall sulkiness. What's Maty's condition today? He's making great progress. He is not crying anymore, he eats with appetite, he even learnt to go to toilets with the assistance of staff members, so he needn't use nappies during day anymore. Even his mother is able to perceive considerable progress in his behaviour. Maty is content not only during day, but at night as well, so he doesn't wake up all the time and sleeps quietly. We're wondering what further nice surprises this little guy will make us in future...

In the Region of Třinec, Frýdek – Místek, Slezská diakonie provides services above all to homeless people, people with addictions, people in distress and people with mental illnesses. In 2013, we brought support and assistance to 1,566 such persons within our outreach programmes, low-threshold day centres, shelters for homeless people, social rehabilitation services, sheltered housing, and others. Services focused on families with children and foster parents are an important part of regional activities too.
There are also numerous volunteers working in the region. They focus above all on marginalised people, people with addictions and people with mental illnesses. Instead of concentrating purely on social services, we would like to involve our clients in activation and motivation programmes too. These activities are supposed to help them regain access to labour market, restore family relationships, reintegrate society or give up addictions. Renovation of vintage vehicles has been successfully developed and several service users have already joined this project. We are also proud of our shops in Třinec and Český Těšín.
We extended our social assistance to the town of Jablunkov and established a new service for foster families in Třinec, Jablunkov and Frýdek-Místek, which we consider the most important achievement in 2013. Another success was the presentation of our services and vintage care renovation workshop during a fair in Hamburg, Germany. We are also happy with the second edition of our „Changes 2014“ calendar with photos of our service users. We are glad to have helped - along with our clients - during floods in the region of Terezín: not only were we allowed to assist people affected by floods, but we also helped change the general opinion about homeless people and present them not as drunkards, but as persons who are willing to help other needy people. We are also grateful for the chance to implement the programme for people with addictions in Nebory.
Story of Marián
Our story begins with several unfortunate coincidences which made Marián loose roof over his head and start living on the street. Somebody may think that such things arrive only to slapdash people and those who don't want to go to work, but the reality is different and much crueller.People with mental illnesses have difficulties with solving day-to-day troubles. For this reason, they often lose their jobs, social benefits a social relationships, which was the case for Marián as well. What's worse, our society is only badly informed about the mental illness which Marián is suffering from and which is in large part responsible for his condition and is still taking a heavy toll on him. Luckily, social services offered by centres of Slezská Diakonie enabled Marián to benefit from long-term support which he and similar people need. At first, it was a shelter for homeless people, followed by our “NOE Třinec support of independent housing” social service. A key worker within our social service has been helping Marián to cope with his difficult condition. Thanks to goals included in his individual plan, Marián is gradually solving troubles related to his independent housing and his low financial literacy. Marián's priority goal - to furnish and equip an initially empty flat with at least the most necessary things and keep and maintain this flat - may seem as obvious. However, as social workers, we know how much effort and hard work is concealed behind the results achieved by Marián and his key worker. Marián has been gradually learning how to proceed in various situations, which implies that his condition does not get worse. On the contrary: he is living in his own flat equipped with all necessary things and basic pieces of furniture and he is gradually solving his financial troubles. Marián shows active interest in finding solutions for his complex life condition, which we perceive as a positive and important sign. Thanks to positive motivation, he is able to combat also “traps” embodied by his friends for whom narcotics and alcohol are life priorities. He is also successfully avoiding the influence of slapdash people mentioned at the beginning of our short story.

The Region of Ostrava, Havířov comprises also services located in the towns of Stonava and Bohumín. Services focused on seniors are offered by ELIM Ostrava and ELIM Stonava centres (domiciliary care), DORKAS centre (emergency line) and SILOE centre (day services and respite care for people with dementia). In addition to social services, Slezská Diakonie also runs a Senior Club in Ostrava.
The town of Bohumín is also home to KONTAKT centre and KANAAN low threshold centre for children. This year, a new KONTAKT outreach programme was launched for inhabitants of marginalized communities in the town of Havířov as well.
A project within Suisse-Czech Cooperation Programme is being intensively implemented in the Region of Ostrava, Havířov. The aim is to renovate premises in 55 Rolnická Street in Ostrava-Nová Ves district and to establish a new Home with Special Treatment for people with dementia.
People in distress may find support in CITIZENS' COUNSELLING CENTRES in Ostrava and Havířov, ELPIS counselling centre in Ostrava and INTERVENTION CENTRE for victims of criminal acts in Havířov. On the other hand, professional counselling services of the KERIT centre in Havířov are aimed to help people prone to violent behaviour. Families with children are given support in the FAMILY COUNSELLING CENTRE in Havířov and SOCIAL ASSISTANCE services in Ostrava and Bohumín.
People with disabilities are a significant target group too. They may use services of our SALOME centre in Bohumín (day care centre and early care) or our sheltered housing programme in Ostrava. A new follow-up service of support of independent living was opened in Ostrava in 2013.
The most extensive project implemented in the Region of Ostrava, Havířov is the newly opened RAINBOW HOUSE which offers three services to people with disabilities (home for people with disabilities with 18 places, day centre with 54 places and respite services with 6 places).
Domiciliary care of Slezská Diakonie in Stonava
After a cerebrovascular accident in 2003, I moved to a home with domiciliary care. I was very curious to learn what my life would look like in a new environment, new flat and with new neighbours. Since the very first day, I have experienced nothing but kindness, respect and support of nurses who helped me not only with my day-to-day needs, but with adaptation to new conditions as well. My left hand became partially immobile after the cerebrovascular accident. However, the centre´s manager provided me with occasions to do exercises: we started to train fine motoric skills by copying various shapes and also by writing letters of the alphabet, as I had forgotten how to write several ones. I joined other activities too. As years passed, I gradually ceased to walk on my own because I broke my femur neck. At first I was using walking aids, but today, I can only move in a wheelchair. Nurses gave me much support even during these difficult moments: they helped me to learn how to move from my bed into the wheelchair and vice-versa, they were continuously encouraging me and the centre's manager was helping me to settle many things… On my 80th birthday, I asked nurses to help me prepare some modest refreshment for inhabitants of our village whom I invited. Not only did they help me to prepare everything, but they also managed to find some spare time and came for a little chat. The manager made several photos with nurses and me in my flat. I keep these pictures as a memory of that beautiful day. Various social events are organized within our domiciliary care - when I was not able to show up on my own anymore, nurses always informed me and brought me there in my wheelchair so that I did not miss the contact with other participants. When I was ill and not able to attend any event for some time, the manager came to my place and played guitar or we just had a chat. I feel immense gratitude for all these moments. I am happy in our home with domiciliary care and the staff gives me continuous support and strength. I am not able to describe all the beautiful moments that the domiciliary care has given me so far, but I can surely express my immense thanks and admiration towards all staff members.

Section BrnoSlezská Diakonie has been providing services in the South Moravian region since 2005. Three registered social services are focused on families with children with disabilities.
DOREA early care counselling centre offers accompaniment and assistance to families with children up to 7 years of age with intellectual, physical or multiple disabilities. Cooperation with our early care centre helps families cope better with their condition and become acquainted with suitable methods to support the development of their child according to his/her specific needs. The centre offers professional accompaniment during early stages of child's life, positive approach and mutual sharing. The main goal is to be with somebody, to be TOGETHER. Partial goals consists also in providing general public with information on early care, its usefulness and necessity in order to enhance mutual understanding and respect. The social service is ambulant and free of charge and is provided in the South Moravian region (districts of Brno-City, Brno-Country, Vyškov, Blansko, Znojmo, Břeclav, Hodonín). Quality of service provision is attested not only by the interest of parents, but also by having been re-awarded the Quality Guarantee of the Association of Early Care Counselling Centres.
ELIADA centre in Brno offers personal assistance and ambulant respite care focused on similar target group as the one of DOREA centre. However, the users may be aged up to 18 years and the regional extent of service provision comprises only Brno-city and Brno-country districts. The aim of ELIADA centre consists in supporting social integration of children with disabilities and in providing parents with necessary free time to enable them to relax, regain new energy or settle important matters. Next year, we intend to extend the target group and involve people aged up to 26 years, while emphasising the goal to meet the needs of adolescent users and to support their gradual independence.
In 2013, we started cooperation with the National Theatre in Brno - Mahen Theatre. The cooperation was officially opened during the premiere of the family theatre play
“Treasure Island” which was accompanied by our first joint project: inauguration of the “OKAmžik života (Moment of Life)” photo exhibition located in front of the Mahen Theatre. The photos were documenting one day in the life of Nora, a girl with multiple disabilities. The intention was to present the world as perceived by an 8-year old girl.
the hectic pre-Christmas period, the goal was achieved.
This partnership and other planned projects are aimed to underline topics that are related to the birth and education of children with disabilities within family environment. Along with this, we are also aware of the necessity to search for new methods of social work and we intend to approach new professionals and partners working in business sphere and invite them to participate in our activities. We believe that mutual cooperation will be a benefit for needy people and also a way to enhance cultivation and social responsibility of all of us. We have great esteem not only for new partners, but especially for those who have been faithfully working with us for many years.
Thanks to funds awarded by the “MoLSA 2013 Family and Protection of Children's Rights” subsidy programme, we were able to offer various types of activities to our clients and their families. Within these meetings, the families were allowed to share their experience, tips and ideas related to children care. New information could be gained due to interactive lectures led by experts, adapted to needs of parents, and aimed at bringing answers to questions related to new approaches and methods suitable for children with disabilities. Another type of support consisted in the chance to use services of a psychologist while searching for solutions of difficult situations within family.
Our thanks go to all sponsors and donors, regardless of the amount donated. Without them, our assistance would have never reached those who need it.

400th anniversary of the Bible of KraliceCelebrations of 400th anniversary of the Bible of Kralice were the main feature of 2013. All branches of our schools were interconnected by a chain of activities and events: pupils and students joined art competitions organized at national level, they made illustrations for particular biblical allegories, Bible reading sessions were organized, as well as Bible writing. A touring exhibition took place at libraries, cafés, community centres and cooperating organizations in order to introduce various editions of the Bible and related artefacts. Celebrations topped during a meeting in Kralice nad Oslavou where the Bible of Kralice was published. Teachers were awarded honourable certificates and awards for active participations and promotion of the Bible – the book which has had positive influence on our nation for centuries.
Ethics educationSchools of Slezská Diakonie joined very actively the „Support of Implementation of Ethics Education in Primary Schools“ project of the Ministry of Education of the Czech Republic. Besides, our school was among a small number of institutions that received funds from the Ministry as well. Ethics education will gradually affect all subjects taught in our church schools.
Guests from Ministry of Education (15-16 May, 2013)Board of our school in Český Těšín invited top representatives of the Department of Special Education for a methodological visit. The ministerial clerks also assisted to classes in all branches of our school. We used this unique opportunity and organized several work meetings: one with our pupil's parents, another one with pedagogues and also a seminar
with partners of our school (Pedagogical Centre for Pupils with Special Needs in Karviná and our partner school in Poland).
New branch in OstravaSince September 1, 2013, our school in Český Těšín has been running a separate branch located at the premises of the RAINBOW HOUSE in Ostrava. The new branch is a primary school for pupils with most severe disabilities. Thanks to professional approach of all employees and Christian dimension of their work, the school is gradually gaining reputation as a valuable alternative to other schools for pupils with special needs in Ostrava.
New branch of the secondary school in Krnov2013 was marked by intensive preparative works aimed at opening our secondary school of practical education. Extensive educational programmes for both the 1-year cycle and the 2-year cycle were elaborated. Besides, the approval procedure aimed at opening the school has been accomplished at all relevant levels (local, regional and national).

Investment activities in 2013 Economic matters in 2013
38 I
The most significant investment in 2013 was the purchase of a former stationery shop in Dukelská street, Český Těšín, amounting to 2,500,000.00 CZK. The building is adjacent to the headquarters of Slezská Diakonie.
In relation to planned preparative works aimed at establishing the Diaconal Education Centre, it was necessary to respond to changes in social legislation, as well as in the field of education, which implied re-elaboration of building works documentation. The costs amounted to 411,000.00 CZK. We also started to elaborate documentation concerning the implementation of building works: the costs amounted to 332,000.00 CZK. Costs of renovation works in the HOSANA centre in Karviná amounted to 100,000.00 CZK.
Carevo shower seat was purchased for the RAINBOW HOUSE centre in Ostrava. Costs amounted to 129,000.00 CZK.
Meditek stairlift was purchased for the EFFATHA centre in Krnov. Costs amounted to 99,649.00 CZK.
Within the project focused on renovation of vintage vehicles, a TATRA 613 car and a Rydvan trailer were purchased. The costs amounted to 135,404.00 CZK (Tatra 613) and 57,000.00 CZK (Rydvan). Investments related to renovation of two Cadillac cars amounted to 25,404.00 CZK.
Last investment in 2013 consisted in purchase of a new software „Wages and Personnel Agenda“. Costs amounted to 157,387.00 CZK.
Total investments of Slezská Diakonie in 2013 amounted to 4,260,521.00 CZK and were covered mostly by donations of sponsors, contributions and foreign donations.
The beginning of 2013 brought once more a stressful situation for Slezská Diakonie. Indeed, subsidy amounting to 85,554,000.00 CZK was awarded to us in the first round of subsidy procedure of the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, which was about 21,000,000.00 less than the previous year. We were obliged to adopt a saving measures and wait to see if further negotiations would bring us additional funds. In the end, we managed to obtain a total MoLSA subsidy amounting to 91,890,000.00 CZK. We managed to gain the rest of funds due to allowed transfers within particular social services: some of them started to be funded by the so-called Individual Project of the Moravian-Silesian Region on March 1, 2014 and April 1, 2014. Within the Individual Project, we managed to obtain a subsidy amounting to 19,131,000.00 CZK which even allowed us to extend the range of several services. Detailed review of incomes, balance sheet and income statement account are part of the following appendices. Overall economy of SD, including account statement concerning subsidies and contributions received in 2013, as well as economic data mentioned in the present Annual Report, were checked during an audit made by the Finaudit, s.r.o. company (licence no. 100). No inadequacies were found. Regional Authority of the Moravian-Silesian Region made a significant contribution in terms of funding of social services in 2013: its subsidy amounted to 9,040,000.00 CZK. Contributions of municipalities were approximately the same as the previous year. Incomes generated by payments of service users increased by more than 3,6 million CZK and amounted to 39,861,000.00 CZK. Lack of funds at the beginning of the year and subsequent changes in funding of particular services brought about many troubles in the overall system of funding and management. Despite all these troubles, we consider 2013 in a positive way as far as funding is concerned. Though not having managed to assure balanced economy, the total deficit was not too high and amounted to approximately 285,000 CZK. This deficit was generated above all within three social services located in Brno which did not manage to obtain necessary funds. The deficit was covered by the assets of Slezská Diakonie.
