12015 Annual Report

2015 was a Jubilee year – a celebration of 50 years (51 competitions) of our secondary schools’ Chamber Music Contest. The climax of these festivities was the Contest’s national final in Wellington’s Michael Fowler Centre in August, but jubilee gave a particular colouring to our Kaleidoscopes season, too. Four of the six national tours featured artists who had been members of winning groups in the past. This led naturally to 2015 being a year in which CMNZ went the extra mile in promoting New Zealand artists and ensembles. We are proud of that.

2015 has been a year of change for CMNZ. With new chief executive Peter Walls at the helm, the board looked for a re-focusing of our mission and our modus operandi. Given the long lead-times for the planning of tours with international artists, some of these changes will emerge gradually – but already the 2016 season (announced in October) shows both a return to our roots as an organization that brings top international ensembles to Aotearoa and a reinvigorated sense of what constitutes chamber music.

Financially, 2015 has been a challenging year. Our programme was greeted with enormous enthusiasm by those who feel a strong commitment to the development of music in New Zealand but others seem to have felt that star international

ensembles were less in evidence than they had come to expect. Subscriber numbers and single-ticket sales declined from 2014 (already down on 2013). The year-end result is disappointing and might have been more so were it not for the generosity and loyalty of our supporters and sponsors.

I would like to express sincere appreciation to our core funder, Creative New Zealand, and to the community and philanthropic trusts who make such a critical contribution to our work. Particular acknowledgement is due to NZCT who have sustained the Contest for eleven years and have seen it grow from 227 participants to the 1600 this year! We also wish to thank those benefactors who supported particular tours and all of those who have donated to our Jubilee Appeal, which raised a magnificent $186,591.

In the latter part of the year we welcomed two new trustees. Quentin Hay is a Wellington barrister who comes to us after some years chairing the Wellington Museums Trust. Matthew Savage is one of the principals of Wellington design company Base Two. Both new trustees have strong and long-standing musical interests.

Finally, I would like to thank my fellow board members for their acumen, guidance and commitment, and Peter and the staffing team for their enthusiasm and dedication.

The Chief Executive’s OverviewIn early February, I attended the Adam Chamber Music Festival in Nelson and heard Nicola Melville, who was in the middle of a Chamber Music New Zealand Encompass tour. A week later, I formally took up the Chief Executive position and found everyone in the national office working hard to ensure that the busy season ahead ran smoothly.

CMNZ was responsible for 135 professional concerts in 2015 and presented an extensive outreach programme, with the NZCT Chamber Music Contest at its heart. Our Kaleidoscopes season had, as bookends, two illustrious international ensembles – the Brodsky Quartet in March and the Vienna Piano Trio in October. During May (New Zealand Music Month) three of our most established ensembles – the New Zealand String Quartet, the NZTrio and the New Zealand Chamber Soloists – went into orbit with a number of New Zealand composers, some well-established (like Ross Harris and John Psathas), others (Claire Cowan, Alex Taylor and Karlo Margetić) representing an emerging generation of talent.

Three tours – the Turnovsky Jubilee Ensemble in June, CLiK in August, and Michael Houstoun (with his “Inspired by Bach programme”) in September – featured musicians who had all at some time been prize winners in the Chamber Music Contest. Collectively, these musicians spanned every decade of the Contest’s history. What greater testimony could there be to the contribution that the Contest has made in providing development opportunities and stimulation to young New Zealand musicians.

The NZCT Chamber Music Contest itself was a standout success. Nearly 2000 secondary school students from Kaitaia to Invercargill participated. In a new development, there were three regional finals in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch with a prize for the best group made up solely from students living in each of these regions. The Semifinals and Finals produced music making of the highest order. The variety of ensemble types, the mix of male and female students and the geographical spread of contestants (and winners) was really pleasing. We were delighted that the Hon Christopher Finlayson (representing the Minister for the Arts, Culture and Heritage) and Mayor Celia Wade-Brown were able to attend the final concert.

The Chief Executive’s Overview

In other ways, too, this has been an outstanding year for Chamber Music New Zealand’s Education and Outreach programmes. In the run up to the Contest, 560 students spread across the country received coaching (sponsored by ABRSM). Accessibility workshops and concerts were given at Hohepa Canterbury and at Mahinawa Specialist School in Porirua. These are inspiring events.

There have been a number of staff changes. Jenni Hall, CMNZ’s Business Manager, left in April after many years dedicated service. Kirsten Mason was appointed to the new position of Development Manager in May. Victoria Dadd, Audience Development Manager, became Marketing and Communications Manager at Capital E. We welcomed Shelley Davis as our Marketing Manager in August. Candice de Villiers was appointed Marketing and Communications Manager at Q Theatre in Auckland; her position at CMNZ has been filled by Hannah Darroch. Pip Want left the Artistic Team in the middle year to be replaced by Jack Hobbs as Artistic Assistant. Last but not least, Gemma Robinson moved on to become Co-General Manager at Bats Theatre. She will be replaced by Virginia Close early in the new year.

I would like to record sincere thanks to my talented and hard-working colleagues in the national office. We rely greatly on the local knowledge and commitment of our nine Regional Concert Managers and our fifteen District Concert Organizers. In every centre, we have a number of volunteers who assist with the presentation of CMNZ concerts. I would like to thank them all. Last but not least, our branch chairs and their committees are very much part of the family. They help build audiences and philanthropic support throughout New Zealand.
