Letter from the Chair, Board of Trustees The graduation ceremony of our students, which takes place each year in the General Assembly Hall of the United Nations, is part of a tradition that is special to UNIS. This very joyful and inspiring occasion is significant for our community at many different levels. It brings together our students, parents, faculty, administrative staff, family and friends to congratulate our graduates on their academic achievements. But this ceremony also marks the end of a successful school year, which you will see illustrated in this Annual Report.

More importantly, this ceremony is a stirring reminder to us all of the close relationship between UNIS and the United Nations—a mutually rewarding relationship that we all cherish and would like to see grow even further in the years to come.

As we are all aware, Secretary–General Ban Ki-moon and Mrs. Ban Soon-taek have always taken a very special and personal interest in UNIS and I would like to thank them for their most valuable support.

My thanks are also due to our Executive Director, Jane Camblin, for providing truly stable and competent leadership at the helm of UNIS, and to the faculty members, the administrative staff and the parents for their exemplary contributions to maintaining the consistent quality and standing of our school. I am grateful to my fellow members of the UNIS Board of Trustees for the guidance and support they have provided to the larger UNIS family and to me personally, as Chair of the Board.

I am conscious of the immense privilege it is for me to be able to serve this great School. The past year has been one of considerable activity and achievements. We have been able not only to articulate a larger vision for the future and bring it together in a Strategic Plan that is rich and diverse but we have also been able to bring in a range of innovations in our curriculum as also in the articulation of the broader goals and objectives of this great institution. In all these efforts, we cannot but be deeply impressed by the singular character and

distinguishing features of this school, which are its amazing diversity, inclusiveness, energy and compassion as well as the fact that these values are anchored in the very breadth and depth of the ideals of the Charter of the United Nations. This is both our pride and our heritage.

Our recently revised Mission Statement highlights our ongoing commitment to academic excellence, our celebration of diversity in all its many forms, and our goal of graduating students who are not only great scholars but great human beings, inspired to be an active force for a better world. Every day, faculty, students and administrators work together in Queens and Manhattan to bring us all closer to a more peaceful, sustainable and compassionate world by ensuring that the values of the United Nations are infused into every aspect of teaching and learning. We are so grateful to the support of the broader UNIS community that enables us to continue to improve our programmatic offerings and enhance our position as one of the world's leading international schools, a school that helps shape the global conversation about best practice in 21 st century education.

We cannot provide this level of engagement and excellence without your help, and we

are thrilled that the 2014-15 academic year closed with some remarkable successes in the area of philanthropic support for our unique school. For two years in a row, the UNIS Fund achieved 100% participation by the Board of Trustees, the Senior Leadership Team, the Parents Association Executive Committee, and the Staff Association Executive Committee. From 2013-2015, we saw an inspirational 151% jump in the total number of gifts received and an increase in overall parent participation from 39% to 76% during the same period. These successes will be leveraged as we are now able to approach outside foundations and philanthropic organizations that require demonstrated proof of community support for its own institution.

To you, our donors and supporters, whether you give your time, your talents, or your treasure, or all three, to UNIS, we are truly grateful. I look forward to our continued collaborations as we work to strengthen and enhance our programmatic offerings in service of our students and our most

The Board of Trustees is committed to the long-term financial health of UNIS and to delivering a world-class educational experience via mission-based budgeting and prudent financial management. We are determined to fulfill our educational mission efficiently while offering outstanding academics, arts and athletics at two campuses in Manhattan and Queens. Our financial health and the generosity of our donors enables UNIS to attract and retain a dynamic, international faculty and an extremely gifted and diverse student body.

UNIS tuition remains among the lowest of our New York City independent peer schools, and tuition revenue comprises approximately 91% of our total net revenue. UNIS also relies on non-tuition revenue sources, such as gifts to the UNIS Fund, gifts from Member States to support modern language study, transfers from the endowment, and extracurricular and summer programs.

UNIS is focused on increasing sources of non-tuition revenue in order to limit reliance on tuition increases to offset rising costs. For example, philanthropic gifts from parents, alumni, parents of alumni, faculty, staff and

friends of UNIS have a very meaningful impact on our ability to innovate and enhance the educational experience for our students. Initiatives such as the expansion of our mission-driven financial aid program to improve socioeconomic inclusion, M4 French and Spanish immersion trips, Modern Language instruction for languages not receiving Member State support, beautification projects on both campuses, and music department upgrades were made possible in large part due to the generosity of the UNIS community.

The UNIS community and the Board of Trustees are grateful to the Sultanate of Oman for its very generous $10 million capital gift received in 2012. These temporarily restricted funds will position UNIS to launch the next phase of its Master Capital Plan in 2016, and are separate from the endowment funds. In addition, UNIS students benefit from world-class Modern Language instruction, which is generously supported in part by gifts from Member States including China, Germany, Italy, Oman and Spain.

The market value of UNIS’ endowment was $18.6 million as of 30 June 2015. Each year,

the Board of Trustees approves the level of appropriation from the endowment for support of operations. For 2015, this amount was $0.4 million, or approximately 2% of the 30 June 2015 endowment balance. The continued growth of the endowment is a strategic priority in order to ensure UNIS’ long-term financial stability.

UNIS carefully manages operating expenses while funding innovative teaching and learning initiatives and plant improvements at both our Manhattan and Queens campuses. It is your support, along with gifts from all of our donors, which help to fund these near-term initiatives and ensure the long-term financial health of UNIS.
