3.2.6 The bonnet is semisphere, no stress concentration.
3.2.5 For the Annular BOP with 70 MPa rated working pressure or more, 12 wedges(example:type FH35-70/105 Annular BOP, see figure 2) are used for the connection between the bonnet and shell. They have big connection strength, and the shell is under uniform stress. It is easy to assemble and disassemble.
3.3.1 The sealing principle of packer: the Annular BOP is sealed in two stages. The stage one: the piston pushes the packing unit up with hydraulic pressure and cause it moves upward along the spherical surface to the center of wellhead, and then the supporting ribs close together to crushed the rubber to the center of wellhead to form the initial sealing. The stage two: if there is well pressure in hole, the wellbore pressure action on the upper annular surface of piston’s inner chamber pushes the piston up further cause the sealing tighter to form reliable sealing. It is called assisting closing of wellbore pressure. 图 6 球形胶芯外形图

Spherical Packers

Feature of Spherical Packer
6
For the Annular BOP with 35 MPa rated working pressure or less, the connection between the
bonnet and shell is flanged connection. It consists of shell, bonnet, piston, packer, adapter ring and
some seals, etc. (Figure 1)
For the Annular BOP with 70 MPa rated working pressure or more, the connection between the
bonnet and shell is wedged connection. It consists of shell, bonnet, piston, packer, mud-guard ring,
wedge, clamp ring and some sealing components, etc. (Figure 2)
When well blowout happens and needs to shut in the well, the high-pressure oil of hydraulic
control device is pumped into the closing chamber of the BOP below the piston. As the piston rises, it
pushes the packing unit up. Because of the limitation of hemispherical bonnet, the packing unit
moves upward along the bonnet spherical surface to the center of wellhead during the rising. Until
the rubber between the supporting ribs is crushed to enclasp the drilling tools or seal the open hole
completely, and then seal the well. When the hydraulic fluid is pumped into the opening chamber of
the BOP above the piston. As the piston comes down, the compressive force action on the spherical
surface of packer is closed up, the packing unit returns to its original position by its elasticity to open
the well.
3.2.1 The major parts, such as bonnet,
shell, piston, and adapter ring adopt
excellent alloysteel. These materials
conform to the specification of NACE
MR-01-75 and apply to the working
condition of acid medium. It has been
heat-treated specially. The hydrostatic
proof test is done according to the
specification of API Spec 16A to
ensure the safety and reliability of
using under the working pressure.
3.2.2 The “Z” shape cross-section
of piston has the features of short
stroke and low height. There are
two wear rings between the piston
O.D. and shell, also a wearing ring
between the piston I.D. and shell to
avoid the direct contact between the
piston and shell during movement
of piston for protecting shell and
piston. Replace the wearing ring if
it is worn.
3.2.4 The lip-sealing ring is used at three dynamic seal
position in Annular BOP. They have self sealing
performance to reduce the wear of sealing ring. So that they
can reliable seal to avoid leak.(see figure 1, figure 2)
Piston O.D. : on piston O.D. to contain opening and
closing chamber.
Piston I.D. : on shell to contain wellbore pressure and
closing chamber.
Adapter ring: on adapter ring to contain wellbore
pressure and opening chamber.
3.2.3 For the Annular BOP
with 35 MPa rated working
pressure or less, the flanged
stud (see figure 1) and cap
nut is used for the
connection between the
bonnet and shell to prevent
the rusting between stud
and nut.
3.3.2 Funnel effect: From the free state to the
compressed state, each cross-section diameter’s
reduction of the annual packer is different. The
reduction at the top is big and at the bottom is small.
Therefore, rubber compresses firmly against the steel
segment at the top of the packer, but rubber at the
bottom is only slightly compressed. This forms a
“funnel element” that not only improves the sealing
characteristics but also makes it easy for a tool joint
to enter the packer. When stripping in, wellbore
pressure compresses the rubber portion of packer to
avoid tensile stress to prolong the service life of
rubber.
3.3.5 The packer is semisphere (Figure 6):It
is vulcanized by 12~14 radiate bow supporting
ribs and rubber. The ribs are made of alloysteel.
3.3.3 Extruding and tear of the packer are
limited: when a hole is closed, the wellbore pressure forces the center rubber of packer to extrude, but the top plate of supporting rib’s spherical surface can resist that, so the rubber in a compressed state to support the large pressure so that it will not be torn.
3.3.4 Large reserve of rubber:This kind of spherical packer has more spare rubber for replenishment after drilling tools are torn because of forced stripping, and there is no need to replace the rubber during the stripping. It is especially suitable for the situation where drilling tool rubs against rubber frequently.
4.1.2 When well blowout happens and needs to shut in the well, the hydraulic fluid is pumped into the closing
chamber of the BOP below the piston. As the piston rises, it pushes the packing unit up. Because of the
limitation of wear plate, the packing unit moves upward along the piston conical surface and wear plate to the
center of wellhead during the rising until the rubber between the supporting ribs is crushed to enclasp the
drilling tools or seal the wellhead completely, and then seal the well. When the hydraulic fluid is pumped into
the opening chamber of the BOP above the piston. As the piston comes down, the compressive force action
on the wear plate is closed up, the packing unit returns to its original position by its elasticity to open the
well.
4.1.1The connection between the bonnet and shell of the Annular BOP with tapered packer
is jaw connection. It is composed of shell, bonnet, piston, packer, outside sleeve, inside
sleeve, wear plate and some components, etc. (Figure 3)
《 OPERATING MANUAL OF ANNULAR BOP 》
4. Working Principle and Primary Structure Features of Annular BOP with
Tapered Packers (Figure 3)
4.1 Working Principle:
7
(Figure 6) Outline drawing of spherical packer
4.2.1 The major parts, such as bonnet, shell,
piston, and outside sleeve adopt excellent
alloysteel. These materials conform to the
specification of NACE MR-01-75 and apply
to the working condition of acid medium. It
has been heat-treated specially. The
hydrostatic proof test is done according to
the specification of API Spec 16A to ensures
the safety and reliability of using under the
working pressure.
4.2.5 The inner chamber on the top of
piston is taper, contact with conical surface
packer directly. Due to the degree of the
taper is small, the thrust of piston for
closing is also and O.D. is less than other
type of annular BOP.
4.2.2The lip-sealing ring is used at three dynamic
seal positions in Annular BOP. They have the
performance of self sealing to reduce the wear of
sealing ring. So that they can reliably seal to avoid
leak. (Figure 3)
Piston O.D.: on piston O.D. to contain opening and
closing chamber.
Piston I.D.: on shell to contain wellbore pressure and
closing chamber.
Bonnet: on bonnet to contain wellbore pressure and
opening chamber.
4.2.6 A dismountable wear plat is equipped on the
friction surface which the top of bonnet’s inner chamber
contact with the supporting ribs of packer (Figure 3) to
protect bonnet and easy to replace.
4.2.4 20 jaws are used for the connection between the
bonnet and shell (Figure 3). They have reliable
connection and the shell is under uniform stress. It is easy
to disassemble and assemble. There are two “O” sealing
rings on each of the jaw screw to prevent the rusting
between jaw and bonnet.
4.2.3 There is a test hole of piston on the
bonnet, contrast the piston stroke from time
to time to predict the life of packer.
4.3.1 The Sealing principle of packer: the Annular BOP is sealed in two stages. The stage one: the piston
pushes the packing unit up with hydraulic pressure and cause it moves upward along the piston conical
surface and wear plate to the center of wellhead, and then the supporting ribs close together to crushed the
rubber to the center of wellhead to form the initial sealing. The stage two: if there is well pressure in hole,
the wellbore pressure action on the upper annular surface of piston’s inner chamber pushes the piston up
further cause the sealing tighter to enhance the sealing performance of packer. It is called assisting closing
of wellbore pressure.4.3.2 The out side of packer is taper. The angle
between the bus of the conical surface and the
axis of the packer is 25°. The packer is
vulcanized by 22 supporting ribs and rubber.
Supporting rid is equipped like radial.
(Figure7).
4.3.3 Large reserve of rubber:The packer has a large
storage capacity. Rubbers among packer’s supporting ribs
may be crushed to the wellhead and sealed. The volume of
packer is much larger than the space which needs to close in.
Therefore, they can close in different shape and size of
drilling tools, also can close the wellhead fully. If hydraulic
control pressure is controlled by a depressuring pressure
regulating valve or a cushion accumulator, the packer can
force stripping and allow passing 18°tool joint . Because of
the large reserve of rubber, if the packer is not damaged
seriously, it still can seal and its life can be tested. During
the annular BOP’s working process, the packer is damaged
continually, so it needs to fill through increasing piston
stroke and crushing reserve rubber. When the piston stroke
is the maximum (piston moves to top), or the upper and
lower surface of the packer’s supporting ribs close up
separately, it shows that the reserve rubber of packer run
out. Even if increasing the hydraulic control pressure, the
packer can’t seal reliably. So the life of the packer can be
predicted by measuring the piston stroke.

5.1 Installation : Annular BOP
cannot be transported to well site
till sealing pressure test, which
rises pressure to rated working
pressure. Installation should be
according to the BOP’s combined
form of the requirement of well
control. The joints of well tubing
and ram BOP should be in the
same direction.
5.2 Pressure test after installation:Annular BOP should be fixed
firmly after installation and be performed the hydrostatic proof tested
with the whole set of wellhead devices to inspect the reliability of sealing
characteristics and all connections. Only qualified BOP can be used.
On the driller’s station and remote control console, the BOP should
be checked by closing and opening twice to inspect the correspondence
between opening & closing and practical operation and correctness of
connection of pipe lines. Air should be removed from the oil duct. The
BOP should be in the open position when normal drilling.
6.1 Normally, the control pressure(closing
pressure) of BOP with individual depressing
pressure regulating valve should be less than
or equal to 10.5MPa and has certain
proportion with wellbore pressure and the
dimension of drilling tool. If the diameter of
drilling tool is large or the wellbore pressure
is low, it should be lowered correspondingly
to extend the packer service life.
6.4 When using the Annular BOP to stripping in
without well kill, must use 18°tool joint. On the
hydraulic control closing lines, in addition to the
individual depressuring regulating valve, if there is
a accumulator, the hydraulic percussion in the
closing chamber can be obtained a cushioning
effect to extend the packer’s service life. During
forced stripping, on the premise of sealing,
hydraulic pressure should be adjusted as low as
possible and the speed of stripping should be
controlled strictly. Especially the drill pipes should
be put up and down slowly through the joints.
6.5 After opening the BOP, it should be checked if the
BOP is opened fully to prevent the packer to be
scratched.
6.3 After reaching the
target stratum, the BOP
should be checked by
closing and opening
with drilling tool but
no well pressure in
well once every day to
avoid the packer
blocking.
6.7 When the BOP is in closing position, it is allowed to
move drilling tool up and down but not to turn it.
6.8 Notice: keep the hydraulic fluid clean.

6.Operation and Notice
9
Figure 7 Outline drawing of tapered packer
6.2 When well blowout happens,
the Annular BOP can be used to
shut in the well first, but it can not
be used for a long time. First, it
can damage the rubber untimely.
Second, it has no locking device.
If there is no special situation, it
can not be used to shut in the
open-hole.
6.6 It is not allowed to release the wellbore pressure by
opening BOP.
After using the well, disassembling the hydraulic lines connecting with BOP, blocking holes
with plugs, clean the BOP from outside to inside, and inspect all seals and their contact
surface. Then grease the bolt holes, the gasket-grooves, the inner surface of bonnet and the
supporting surface of piston to avoid rust.
After disassembling, the connections such as gaskets, studs, nuts and special tools should be
gathered and encased in order to prevent they from losing.
Check the all screws from time to time, tighten them in time if they are loose.
All rubber parts should be stored as following:
# Numbering them according to the time of warehousing and new & old, always using the
oldest first.
# Storing rubbers in a dark and dry room in a relaxational position. Do not store them
outdoors. These rubbers can not be bent or compressed. It is better to lay them flat in a
wooden case. O-ring is not allowed to hung on the woodpile.
# Store rubbers away from corrosive medium, electric motors and high-voltage equipment to
avoid packer producing ozone to corrode rubbers.
7.2.1 Packer is the key part which plays the role of sealing well. Once it is damaged seriously, it
can not seal well. Replacing the packer in time if it is damaged seriously. The packer should be
replaced in support base.

For the normal
packer of control
line, the packer can
not seal and shut in
the well pressure.
1.The old packer is worn
seriously, peel or aging.
2. The new packer can not be
closed to proper position.
3. Some impurities may be
deposited in the groove of
packer.
4. There is leakage in the seal
portions of piston.
1. Replacing the packer.
2.Opening and closing the
packer for several times.
3.Cleaning the groove and
other parts of packer, move
the rubber regularly.
4.Replacing the sealing ring
of piston.
2
The BOP can
not be opened after
close.
1.The BOP is closed for a
long time which results in
permanent deformation and
aging of packer.
2.There is some solidified
cement slurry under the
packer.
1. Replacing the packer.
2.Clean it after lifting the
bonnet out.
3
The BOP can
not be opened and
closed flexibly.

4
The medium in
the well flows into
the cylinder or flows
from the connection
between bonnet and
shell.
The corresponding seals
on adapter ring have been
damaged.
Replacing the
corresponding damaged
seals.
5
The pressure can
not be controlled by
hydraulic unit.
The seal-surface of shell,
cylinder, piston, adapter ring
and seals have been damaged.
Replacing all seals,
repairing the seal surface.
6
The movement
direction of piston is
not the same as
nameplate mark of
control valve.
The connection of pipe
lines between control console
and BOP is wrong.
