Welcome To Annunciation Parish!
Uniting The Catholic Community of Newington, Established June 29th, 2017
If you are new to our parish or if you have been away from the practice of the faith, we extend a warm welcome and hope you feel at home here. Our parish is nourished by your presence today. We invite you to introduce yourself to the priest or deacon after Mass so that we can greet you. We hope you will make Annunciation Parish YOUR parish.
All children are welcome to be baptized in the Catholic Church. It does not matter if the parents are single or married outside the Catholic Church. ALL CHILDREN no matter what, are welcome to the baptism of the Lord, as long as they will be raised Catholic. Annunciation Parish usually offers baptisms on the first and third Sundays. To get started, please call the parish office - Saint Mary (860-666-1591) or Holy Spirit (860-666-5671). We can’t wait to welcome your child into the life of Christ and our Church through Baptism.

Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson
In those bygone days, crayons were the in struments of choice for children for hours of simple fun. They came in different sized boxes. A basic 6 or 7 sticks morphed into a mighty box of 54, with a hinged lid and staggered rows of more colors than one could imagine. They had exotic names like “burnt
sienna” and “chartreuse” that I recall even today. I know these details because I never got a 54 box of my own. We were 6 kids, disciplined and bound by a strict budget at the time that compelled sharing.
My point with this reverie: None of the crayon colors were dominant. Nor did it really matter how we used them. Someone on the page might have a purple face and flowers might bloom a deep navy blue. And this whether we stayed in the lines or strayed beyond. I know that some of these masterpieces made it to the coveted refrigerator door.
Would that people’s skin color did not matter in these adult days of lost innocence! So many (or should I write “too many”?) of us adults draw a distinct line between “us” and “them.” The recent massacre of some Jewish worshipers leaving their synagogue on a Saturday morning in Pittsburgh, PA underscores the point.
The beautiful legend of the Gentile wise men, or magi, traveling to worship the Jewish Infant, as preserved by St. Matthew, strikes at any vestige of prejudice in our hearts. From the pre-gospel Letters of St. Paul we learn what these later writers would proclaim: the meaning of Christ was then, and still is now, for all the world to take to heart. It was never meant to be locked up in a corner of the ancient Mediterranean world. How well it is received is up to us who live here now, and how well we live it.
Under a cultural exchange program, Alan Abramsky and his family in Roanoke, Texas, were hosts to a rabbi from Russia at Christmastime. They decided to introduce him to a culinary treat that was probably not available in his country, so they took him to their favorite Chinese restaurant. Throughout the meal, the rabbi spoke excitedly about the wonders of North America in comparison to the bleak conditions in his homeland. When they had finished eating, the waiter brought the check and presented each of them with a small brass Christmas tree ornament as a seasonal gift.
They all laughed when Abramsky’s father pointed out that the ornaments were stamped “Made in India.” But the laughter subsided when they saw that the rabbi was quietly crying. Concerned, Abramsky’s father asked the rabbi if he was offended because he’d been given a gift for a Christian holiday. He smiled, shook his head, and said, “Nyet”. I was shedding tears of joy to be in a wonderful country in which a Buddhist gives a Jew a Christmas gift made by a Hindu!”
On this actual Twelfth Day of Christmas, the feast of the Epiphany, in this brand new year of 2019, everything depends on how we cooperate with God’s grace in our relationships with others. In other words, everything depends on how we “color” our world.

Saint Andre Bessette, 1845-1937
January 6
Andre Bessette faced many difficulties from the start of his life.
He was often ill as a child and was sent to work as a farmhand
when his parents died in his early teenage years. He failed at
many of the jobs he tried, including shoemaking, baking and
blacksmithing. At 25 he entered a religious order in Montreal,
the Congregation of Holy Cross and despite his ill health they
allowed him to stay. He was given the lowliest jobs as laundry
worker and messenger, and eventually doorkeeper where he
spent the next 40 years of his life. Once while visiting a friend
who was ill, Andre prayed and asked for the intercession of St. Joseph – to whom he had a lifelong
devotion – and his friend was cured. Word spread of the miraculous cure and soon after many ill
and infirmed began to visit Brother Andre to ask for his prayers in hopes of being healed. Doctors
could not explain the miraculous cures they witnessed under his prayers, and Andre was always
quick to say that it was not him who healed people, but Our Lord through the intercession of St.
Joseph. He eventually was provided with 4 secretaries to help him handle the 80,000 letters he
received each year. Continuing his devotion to St. Joseph, he collected enough donations to build
a small chapel on the nearby land of Mount Royal, where he continued spending hours visiting
and praying with the sick. Although after several years the money began to run out, Andre placed
his trust in God that if He wanted it open, then the funds would be provided. Sure enough they
were, and over the next 50 years the magnificent Saint Joseph Oratory – a minor basilica – was
built and is one of the most visited Christian pilgrimage sites in the world. Andre continued his
ministry until he died at age 92. Although Andre never had worldly success or great intelligence,
in the eyes of Our Lord he led a very rich life as he brought many souls to the Catholic Faith
through his ministry of prayer and compassion. Let us strive to see things not as the world does,
but as God does, and always find hope in whatever situation, however lowly, we find ourselves.
Saint Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal is a Roman Catholic minor basilica and national shrine on Mount Royal's Westmount
Summit in Montreal, Quebec. It is Canada's largest church and claims to have one of the largest domes in the world.
