Page 2: Anticipating Tomorrows Organisation

Did you know?Ants “discovered”

agriculture through division of labour

and hierarchy more than

40,000 years ago.

Page 3: Anticipating Tomorrows Organisation

How far have we come?

Page 4: Anticipating Tomorrows Organisation

Welcome the modern

organisational form…

Page 5: Anticipating Tomorrows Organisation

The Hierarchical Organisation

Page 6: Anticipating Tomorrows Organisation
Page 7: Anticipating Tomorrows Organisation

Here’s a forgotten story

Page 8: Anticipating Tomorrows Organisation

Once upon a time…

Page 9: Anticipating Tomorrows Organisation

All was well within the hierarchy…

Page 10: Anticipating Tomorrows Organisation
Page 11: Anticipating Tomorrows Organisation

Systems, Structures, Policies

and Procedures were all working

smoothly.

Page 12: Anticipating Tomorrows Organisation

Until one day when Jane saw a problem

sail in...

Page 13: Anticipating Tomorrows Organisation
Page 14: Anticipating Tomorrows Organisation

A problem that saw the need for

change...

Page 15: Anticipating Tomorrows Organisation

Jane informed her boss. Her boss

informed her boss… And so on up the

hierarchy…

Page 16: Anticipating Tomorrows Organisation
Page 17: Anticipating Tomorrows Organisation

Eventually…

The CEO became aware of the

problem.

Page 18: Anticipating Tomorrows Organisation

He agreed.

They needed to change.

Page 19: Anticipating Tomorrows Organisation

Jane waited and watched as the

problem sailed on...

Page 20: Anticipating Tomorrows Organisation
Page 21: Anticipating Tomorrows Organisation

The CEO engaged his senior

leadership team.

They started work on a solution…

Page 22: Anticipating Tomorrows Organisation

They engaged down the business. Layer

by layer. The solution eventually

made it to Jane.

Page 23: Anticipating Tomorrows Organisation
Page 24: Anticipating Tomorrows Organisation

The only problem was…

Page 25: Anticipating Tomorrows Organisation

There was now a new problem

arriving…

Page 26: Anticipating Tomorrows Organisation
Page 27: Anticipating Tomorrows Organisation

Jane wondered if she would have to go through all that

AGAIN…

Page 28: Anticipating Tomorrows Organisation

Fortunately for Jane there was

something on the horizon which

meant she wouldn’t have to...

Page 29: Anticipating Tomorrows Organisation
Page 30: Anticipating Tomorrows Organisation

Unfortunately for the organisation it also meant the end of the hierarchy as

they knew it.

A sign that we’ve moved beyond the

ants could be…

Page 34: Anticipating Tomorrows Organisation

We’re not so hung-up on hierarchies…
