supporting APA

Under the auspices of Christian Health Associates, Anchorage Project Access (APA) follows a national model that has proven to improve health outcomes and reduce emergency department charity costs in cities across the nation. APA serves a critical role in our community’s healthcare safety net as it is the only program of its kind in Alaska.

Since opening our doors to patients in 2005, APA began working with 350 health care providers volunteering their time and services. Our network has grown to include 649 supporting health care specialists, dentists, hospitals, radiology centers, physical therapists, and many other allied health professionals. The generosity of our health care partners is inspiring and life changing.

In 2019, the total amount of donated care was a remarkable $1,609,026. Since 2005, in partnership with our compassionate and committed providers, funders and supporters, APA has coordinated $49,322,259 in donated care.

The need for APA’s services is demonstrated by the number of enrollments for donated care, the number of ACA/Medicaid health insurance assists, the number of enrollments into health insurance plans and the number of resource contacts conducted throughout the year. All APA patients establish a primary care health home, as well as a dental health home, to receive ongoing preventive care.

It is diffi cult to imagine the changes in our health care world between the time I sent my original letter to the printer expressing gratitude to our health care partners for 14 years of service, and the present, as we respond to the novel coronavirus in Alaska. At the close of our 2019 program year in September, we hadn’t heard about COVID-19. We hadn’t thought about social distancing, wearing masks when out in public and the need to protect others from a virulent illness. APA was created to strengthen the health care safety net for our most vulnerable community members with compassion and effi ciency. Our services are needed now more than ever to ensure access to health care for low income individuals without health insurance. We join our dedicated specialists, dentists, physical therapists, imaging partners, and the hundreds of other Alaskan health care providers working with APA, to do what we do best- take care of one another.

The APA Board of Directors and staff are honored to work with such remarkably generous health care partners who donate their treatment services through APA. Under the auspices of Christian Health Associates, APA is ready to meet the challenges ahead. We thank our health care professionals, our supporters and referring clinics, for the privilege of working together to provide life-saving care to our neighbors.

In 2019 APA expanded services in three essential areas- outreach and engagement to highly vulnerable individuals, applying for and enrolling individuals in health insurance plans and growing the APA pro bono dental program. APA doubled the weekly hours and locations for outreach and engagement to agencies serving chronically homeless individuals to ensure access to donated specialty medical and dental care, to apply for and maximize utilization of ACA, Medicaid and/or Medicare health insurance, and to provide assistance with navigating complex health care systems. In partnership with licensed professional counselors, APA initiated its fi rst donated behavioral health counseling services.

APA’s Eligibility Specialist became certifi ed to assist individuals to apply for Medicare. APA increased the number of individual “assists” for health insurance by 35%. APA increased the number of applications for ACA and Medicaid by 67% and increased the number of enrollments into an ACA or Medicaid health insurance plan by 85%. APA received additional funding from the Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA) through the State of Alaska DHSS to expand the pro bono dental program and to provide oral health education in the community.

APA increased the number of medical specialists and dentists reaching 649 supporting providers, including 53 dentists. This represents a signifi cant increase over the 2018 dental provider participation. During 2019, APA providers donated $1,609,026 in pro bono care. Since 2005 our health care partners have provided over $49.3 million in donated care through APA. APA has served over 3,657 unique patients, averaging 3 or more specialists donating health care services per patient, totaling 8,510 enrollments for donated treatment. Since 2005 APA has coordinated and scheduled over 18,170 appointments for care.

Together, we are stronger than ever!
