INTRODUCTION Boosting Skills of Indian Youth

“I want nothing to do with any religion concerned with keeping the masses satisfied to live in hunger, filth, and ignorance. I want nothing to do with any order, religious or otherwise, which does not teach people that they are capable of becoming happier and more civilized, on this earth, capable of becoming true man, ‘master of his fate and captain of his soul”- pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru

§ India as a country has achieved much since its 66 years of independence and this includes being the world leader in BPO and the services sector.

§ India is also blessed with the world’s largest youth population. As much of this is true, 57% of Indian youth lack sufficient skill sets to be considered fully employable and 48% of employers face difficulties in filling vacancies.

§ India as a nation has to maximize the potential of its youth by imparting skill set necessary in today’s fast paced, cut throat competitive world.

Problems

ØSocio-Economic Practices § In certain interior villages the upper caste is more powerful

and the lower caste people are not allowed to grow, get educated or even in some cases avail the welfare schemes of government as they are not considered equals.

§ In India , a certain percentage of the population radiates a “know it all” attitude which stagnates the will to improve and cordons off the onset of new skills.

§ The ministries and agencies are not often synchronized which leads to a failure of various schemes and programs

Problems cont…

Ø Role of Government

§ Budget is allocated by the government but till it reaches the grass root level most of the funds are siphoned off and end up in the pockets of corrupt “government babus”.

§ There is a lack of advertisement and media reach in the interior parts of country which is necessary for the people to know their rights and national skill development / employment schemes.

§ Yes, we worship goddesses. Yes, we are not a male dominated nation yet a large chunk of women in our country are not comfortable venturing out late in the evening . This hinders their participation in various workshops and skill development programs.

Problems cont…

Ø ROLE OF SCHOOLS AND TRAINING INSTITUTES.

§ Dearth of quality teachers , theoretical curriculum , institutional inefficiency help no further in imparting and improving the skills of individuals and enhancing employability.

Ø OTHERS§ In India parents are overly protective of their children

and in most of the cases their future is decided by them. Most of the parents ask their kids to pursue a more society approved career rather than an unconventional one which hinders the personal growth and disallows the nurturing of some important life skills and soft skills. Problems end.

SOLUTIONS AND REFORMS

§ Existing programs can be made to utilize their full potential if awareness is widespread. Advertisements, 'Nukars' (displaying benefits of various programs) and other such methods can be used to reach out to the masses.

§ All schools and the teachers should also counsel the parents to let their child grow by learning soft skills ,life skills etc apart from their studies.

§ Schools , colleges, and institutions should organise trips to various places of interest to let their students learn in a more better and practical manner.

§ Industries prioritize fundamental competencies and colleges needs to focus on fundamentals and basic skills in order to inculcate industrial readiness.

Solutions cont…

§ Individuals pursuing this course should be trained to identify a child's area of interest and thus motivate them to develop skills in the same domain.

§ In order to encourage women to take part in skill development workshops organised by governments, the government should ensure special security programs and solutions.

§ Yoga and meditation should be incorporated in school and college curriculum so that the youth can channelize their energy in a positive direction. To learn or develop any skill , peace of mind is a minimum pre-requisite which can be achieved by these means.

§ Incorporate the promised amendments relating to disabled children.

Solutions cont…

§ In a sprint to acquire what the world demands we must not overlook the brilliance and potential of existing traditional skills. After all, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. What we tend to imply is this " the flag bearers of traditional skills should be imparted skills and provided assistance so as to enable them conquer new heights by maximizing their opportunities.“

§ The government should provide financial assistance in the form of wage to those taking part in the workshops. This is important because a high percentage of Indian youth is engaged in part time unskilled work and can be persuaded to take part in workshops only if they are compensated for what they miss.

§ Undertake a extensive public advocacy campaign in collaboration with civil society groups to prepare the SMCs, local authorities and other concerned agencies to effectively implement the Act approved.

Solutions cont…

§ Work out appropriate mechanisms to involve universities and non-government agencies with appropriate expertise in areas like quality improvement, curricular design, teacher trainings and so on.

§ The government must develop and enforce standards for training of teachers. It must also provide technical support and resource to the state government for promoting innovations, research, planning and capacity building.

§ Promoting the formation of self help groups in villages and setting up of vocational training providers at rural level.

Solutions end…

CONCLUSION§ Attaining fundamental level of education is proving to

be an uphill task, with nearly 40 per cent of people over the age of 15 being illiterate.

§ Ironically, it is becoming even harder to create a robust and continuous pipeline of talent. In the race of development, India has to undertake heuristic methods to match up to the international standards .

§ The best and most selective universities generate too few graduates, and new league of colleges are producing graduates of uneven quality.

§ It’s high time now for our education system to reboot itself and joint initiatives by the industry , Government and academia will play an important part in plugging the talent gap in the years to come.
