Lord Jesus Christ, Redeemer of the world, you have shouldered the burden of our weakness and borne our sufferings in your own passion and death. Hear this pray-er for our sick brothers and sister whom you have re-deemed. Strengthen their hope of salvation and sustain them in body and soul, for you live and reign for ever and ever. Amen.

FATHER ANTHONY’S FAITH FORMATION CORNER

Happy Easter/Passover Sunday

And so the lengthy Lenten season is finally over, as we transition into the new liturgical season of Easter. I hope that most of us did not just view Lent as a liturgical boredom, but that we actually had a chance to renew ourselves spiritually. And if you decided to give up certain things for Lent, like sweets and candies and the like, I guess it is now a good time to double the amount! Well, Easter is indeed the most important litur-gical celebration in our Christian faith, as we hold the memory of the Lord’s Passover very dear in our hearts. In an earlier reflection, I mentioned that the English term that describes this important season, EASTER, is quite defective. In the Romance languages, the term actually has a much more meaningful (and more “biblical,” I must add) connotation: Passover. But for our purpose, we just have to use the term EASTER. Anyway, what is the meaning of the Easter story? Among other things, it is a story of new life. It is about a man—condemned as a criminal, abandoned by his disciples and friends—who suffered a defamatory death on the cross. And yet, after a few days, he rose again from the dead. By his resurrection, his followers, who previously had lost all hope, suddenly were able to find new life and a fresh beginning. I believe we can very well relate to this story because sometimes in life, we all stand in need of new life and a new beginning… My weekly bulletin reflections are mostly theological/biblical. However, for this Easter Sunday I would like to reflect on my personal experience. About two years ago in the spring of 2016, my time at St. Angela Merici Church (Brea) was coming to an end. My first parish assignment as a newly ordained minister was St. John Neumann in Ir-vine: a very wonderful experience which I still treasure this very day. St. Angela was my second parish assignment—not without its ups and downs. In July 2016, I left St. Angela and began my new ministry at our St. Barbara parish with mixed feelings. But I did realize back then that I was in need of a new beginning. And St. Barbara did definitely provide me that fresh air. I am greatly indebted to the parish for that, although I have not been very explicit about it in my preaching… Anyway, that is an example of how one may experience an “Easter” moment. What is your Easter story? As mentioned above, we all need a new beginning. By his resurrection from the dead, the Lord Jesus has given hope to a fallen humanity. By his victory over death, Jesus has not only given us new life, but more importantly, “eternal” life. May the peace of the risen Lord scatter the darkness of your hearts and bring you his very life! Happy Easter. Alleluia. Alleluia.

--Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM

FAITH FORMATION NEWS

All who were baptized and received into full communion are called neophytes until the anniversary of their initiation next East-er. The final period of regular weekly for-mation extends through the Easter season, the seven weeks from Easter to Pentecost. This post-baptismal catechesis is called “Mystagogy”. It is a time for deepening the Christian experi-ence, especially in appreciation for the sacramental life, for spiritual growth, and for entering more fully into the life of the Catholic community. We as a parish community pledge to help them grow and mature in the Christian life and to develop a genuine Catholic world view. Please pray for all those who God has called to join us as we continue on our pilgrimage to our Father in Heaven.
