And noting that the most vulnerable are always involved elderly people and children Pope Francis said that while he accompanies them with prayers he has also announced a special charity collection to support them. Inviting all faithful to join in favour of this initiative, the Pope said that next Sunday, April 24, it will be possible to contribute to the collection in all Catholic Churches in Europe. “This gesture of charity, beyond alleviating material suffering, expresses my personal closeness and the solidarity of the entire Church” he said. And he expressed his profound hope that it may be of help to promote peace and the respect for rights in that “worn out land.” Pope Francis also recalled that on April 4 we mark the International Day of Awareness Against Antipersonnel Mines. He said that too many people continue to be killed or mutilated by these terrible explosives and that brave men and women risk their lives to clear mined land. “Please, let us renew the commitment for a world without landmines” he appealed. On April 5th, 2016, Fr. Maxim Kobasuk, OSBM was

called by Our Lord, whom he served for nearly 39 years as a

priest. Fr. Maxim was ordained at Immaculate Conception

in Hamtramck, Michigan in 1977. From 1979-86, he taught

the novices and scholastics who were to become our future

priests at St. Josaphat Monastery in Glen Cove, New York.

Fr. Maxim was stationed at Immaculate Conception parish

in Hamtramck from 1986-97, serving as Pastor from 1989-97.

He taught at both Immaculate Conception grade school

and high school and contributed to the weekly Basilian

Fathers Radio Hour.

From 1997-2014, Father Maxim served in various parishes

in the Stamford Eparchy and in 2014 he was appointed

Director of St. Basil's College Seminary and Director of the Diaconate Formation. He gave conferences and retreats.

Fr. Maxim had an interest in electronics and computers and

used this knowledge to prepare various liturgical and

sacramental books for use by the clergy and faithful.

May his memory be eternal! Christ is Risen!

The Empty Tomb 'Before the dawn, Mary and the women came and found

the stone rolled away from the tomb. They heard the angelic

voice: Why do you seek the dead as a man the One who is

everlasting light? Behold, the clothes, in the grave! Go and

proclaim to the world: The Lord is risen! He has slain death,

as He is the Son of God, saving the race of men.'

'When the women disciples of the Lord learned from the

angel the joyous message of Your Resurrection; they cast

away the ancestral curse and elatedly told the apostles; Death

is overthrown! Christ God is risen, granting the world great

mercy.'

The empty tomb was the great sign that something

mysterious occurred following the death and burial of Jesus of

Nazareth. This sign found its proper interpretation when the

risen Lord appeared to his female and male disciples in that

order. The tomb was empty because Jesus had been raised

from the dead! We Christians do not believe in the empty

tomb, but in the Risen Lord! The empty tomb is proof, a

secondary sign of the resurrection, but essential to the claim

that Jesus had been raised from the dead.

In a section of his book Believing in the Resurrection,

entitled The Sign of the Tomb, biblical scholar Gerald O

'Collins eloquently comments on the significance of this great

sign; "First in the New Testament the empty tomb stood for a

return from the dead and all that such a return implied. The

burial of people signified that they were removed from the

land of the living and had fallen into the power of death…

Where tombs express the finality and irrevocable loss of death,

Jesus' open and empty tomb the fullness of the new and

everlasting life into which he had risen. Here the emptiness of

the tomb, paradoxically, indicated the fullness of life into

which the risen Jesus had entered. Graves naturally suggest

the quiet decay of an existence dissolved by death. The empty

tomb of Jesus symbolized the opposite, the complete life that

had overcome the silence of death.

Second, the emptiness of Jesus' grave reflects the holiness

of what it once held: the corpse of the incarnate Son of God,

who lived totally for others and died to bring a new covenant

of love for all people. This Holy One could not experience

corruption. (Acts 2; 27) Third, God did not discard Jesus'

corpse, but mysteriously raised it and transfigured it, so as to

reveal what lies ahead for human beings and their world. In

short, the empty tomb in Jerusalem forms God's radical sign

that redemption is not an escape to a better world but a

wonderful transformation of this world. Seen that way, the

open and empty tomb of Jesus is highly significant for anyone

who wants to appreciate what redemption means."

Theologians, scholars, believers and non-believers have

debated over the empty tomb, let us with a living faith gaze

into that empty tomb as did the myrrh-bearing women

and some of the disciples and hear the voice of the angelic

proclamation: "Do not be amazed, you seek Jesus of Nazareth,

who was crucified. He has risen, he is not here, see the place

where they laid him." (Mark 16; 6)

"LIFE'S BIG QUESTIONS" “Loving Father, help me to BECOME THE BEST VERSION OF MYSELF by seeking Your will and becoming a living example of Your love in the world. Open my heart to the areas of my life that need

change, in order for me to carry out the mission and experience the joy You have imagined for my life.” Excerpt from “Dynamic Catholic Prayer” featured in Decision Point. Attention parents of our parish youth! If the above prayer touched your heart, please consider having your teenager (13-18 years of age) take part in Decision Point. Decision Point is a program currently being run in our parish Youth Group to enlighten and educate teens about living our Catholic faith. To see what Decision Point is all about, go to http://dynamiccatholic.com/confirmation/view-program/ and watch the video titled “Navigation” from session one. Then, please consider bringing your teen(s) to attend one of our Youth Group sessions. They are currently being held on Sundays at 10:30 am - 11:30 am in the parish hall (prior to the 12:00pm liturgy). Please contact our Youth Group facilitator, Katryna Czemerys, at [email protected] for more information. With enough interest in this program, we hope to expand our Youth Group and keep our parish thriving. This endeavor is being supported by our St. Josaphat Council #8441 of the Knights of Columbus. Please consider it!
