TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

When we imagine the disciples cowering behind locked doors on the first Easter, it is a matter of the greatest urgency that the doors get opened. They are not locked in as if in prison; rather, they have chosen to marinate in fear. Both the lock and the key stand on their side of the door, in their control. Christ breaks through this significant barrier with a message of "Peace." The risen Lord's word propels them through the door and along the path leading to the consoling image of the commu-nity living in harmony in the first reading today. What do we pray for in our tradition? More than anything else, we pray for peace. Every Mass is an earnest prayer for peace with God, with self, with neighbor, and for peace in the world. Yet, curiously, the peace Christ offers is deeper than the mere absence of conflict. Our tradition treasures the memo-ries of saints who were remarkably open to Christ's gift of peace even in the maelstroms of history. St. Edith Stein and St. Maximillian Kolbe, martyrs of the Holocaust, are but two examples. At the eye of a fearful storm, they stand as witnesses to the power of Christ's rising in our lives. -- Rev. CHÚA NHẬT II PHỤC SINH

PHÚC CHO AI KHÔNG THẤY MÀ TIN

Ga 20,19-31 1. Từ hồi rất bé khi có dịp ra viếng Đất Thánh quê tôi, tôi thường được mẹ dẫn đến viếng hai ngôi mộ bằng đá ong cũ kỹ, mẹ tôi nói đây là phần mộ của ông sơ và bà sơ của tôi. Có lần tôi hỏi: " Mẹ có biết mặt ông bà sơ không ? Mẹ có dự lễ an táng của ông bà sơ không ? " Mẹ tôi trả lời : " Mẹ chỉ nghe ông bà ngoại (của tôi) nói lại thôi, ông bà sơ qua đời đã lâu lắm rồi, nhưng mẹ tin chắc rằng đó là mộ của ông bà sơ " . Trong cuộc sống, có những điều chính mắt chúng ta chứng kiến, kiểm nghiệm nhờ đó ta tin, thế nhưng có những điều chúng ta tin nhờ vào người khác. 2. Đoạn Tin Mừng hôm nay kể lại hai lần Đức Giêsu Phục Sinh hiện ra với các môn đệ. Lần thứ nhất không có Tôma, khi các môn đệ khác kể lại với ông : " Chúng tôi đã xem thấy Chúa " , thì ông đáp lại : " Nếu tôi không nhìn thấy vết đinh ở tay Người ... thì tôi không tin " . Đó là nguyện vọng

rất bình thường, rất hợp lý của Tôma. Tám ngày sau, Đức Giêsu Phục Sinh lại hiện ra, lời đề nghị của Tôma được đáp ứng. Chúa nói với ông : " Hãy xỏ ngón tay con vào đây, và hãy xem tay Thầy; hãy đưa bàn tay con ra xỏ vào cạnh sườn Thầy, chớ cứng lòng nhưng hãy tin " . Tôma liền đáp lại và tuyên xưng đức tin: " Lạy Chúa tôi và là Thiên Chúa của tôi " . Giờ đây, ông chịu khuất phục vì sự hiện diện của Chúa, ông chẳng dám đưa tay ra sờ Chúa nữa, ông đã tin. 3. Chúa luôn sẵn sàng thỏa mãn những đòi hỏi của các môn đệ, của ta, nhưng bao giờ Người cũng muốn niềm tin của ta ở mức cao hơn : " Phúc thay những ai không thấy mà tin " . Thật vậy, từ mức độ thấp là tin dựa vào bằng chứng giác quan kiểm nghiệm được, lên mức độ cao là tin chỉ vì nghe, bởi vì mình đã an tâm về uy tín của người nói cho mình nghe. Như tôi tin vào lời mẹ tôi nói, mẹ tôi tin vào lời của ông bà ngoại tôi về mộ phần của ông bà sơ tôi, lẽ nào họ không nói đúng sự thật? Tôma chậm tin vào lời chứng của các bạn, nên ông chậm tin vào Chúa Phục sinh. Ông cũng chậm tin, hay quên cả lời Chúa báo trước về sự phục sinh của Người. Điều đáng trách của Tôma là ở chỗ đó, nhưng cũng có cái hay là vì ông chậm tin, nên ngày hôm nay chúng ta vững tin vào việc Đức Kitô Phục Sinh hơn, bởi ông không là người nhẹ dạ cả tin. 4. Trong thực tế, có rất nhiều điều cần phải qua kiểm chứng để mới có thể tin được. Nhất là sống trong thời đại mà sự thật dễ bị coi thường, dễ bị lừa đảo. Thế nhưng chúng ta vẫn phải tin bao điều mình không thấy : như các bạn trẻ vẫn tin vào tình yêu, tình bạn. Các đôi vợ chồng vẫn tin vào sự chung thủy của nhau. Con cái tin vào sự hướng dẫn của cha mẹ. Học trò tin vào sự hướng dẫn của thầy cô . Cái khó là nên tin vào ai, và không nên tin vào ai? Tin điều gì và không nên tin điều gì ? Trong cuộc sống hẳn chúng ta có rất nhiều kinh nghiệm về điều này để ứng xử ; nhưng trong lãnh vực đức tin và luân lý, thì không còn nghi ngờ gì nữa, mà phải tin tuyệt đối vào Thiên Chúa, vào Đức Giêsu và Lời Người dạy. Vì Lời Người là chân thật, hằng sống. Chúng ta cũng phải tin vào lời chứng của các Tông Đồ và các đấng kế vị các ngài, vào Hội Thánh của Chúa, nơi chân lý được lưu truyền. " Phúc cho ai không thấy mà tin " , lời chúc phúc này tiếp tục trao ban cho mọi Kitô hữu, qua mọi thời, mọi nơi dù không thấy Chúa bằng mắt thường, nhưng nhận ra sự hiện diện của Người qua đức tin. 5. Thế nhưng hãy xem coi ta có xứng đáng nhận lời chúc phúc này của Đức Giêsu Phục Sinh hay không ? Bởi khi suy niệm về bài TM hôm nay, có khi ta trách Tôma cứng lòng, còn ta ? Phải chăng vì cứng lòng nên ta mới hờ hững với lời Chúa dạy ? Phải chăng vì cứng lòng nên ta đến nhà thờ không phải để thờ phượng Chúa mà để gặp gỡ nhau, để lương tâm được yên ổn vì thế cứ thích ở ngoài nhà thờ, dù bên trong nhà thờ còn rất nhiều chỗ ngồi ? Phải chăng vì cứng lòng nên ta chỉ tìm lợi ích cho mình mặc ai thiệt thòi đau khổ ? Phải chăng vì cứng lòng nên ta không vui trước sự thành công của người khác ? v.v Với những cách sống như thế, chúng ta không thể là người có phúc được vì chứng tỏ ta không thực sự tin vào Chúa Phục sinh, không tin Lời Người dạy và như vậy làm sao có thể làm chứng cho tha nhân biết rằng Chúa đã phục sinh ? TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE En tiempos pasados, cuando la misa era en latín, no teníamos la oportunidad de escuchar en nuestro propio idio-ma las bellas palabras que Cristo pronunció durante la Últi-ma Cena y que el sacerdote repite durante la Consagración: "Esto es mi cuerpo". . . "Esta es mi sangre". Por tal razón los monaguillos sonaban unas campanitas indicando que algo importante estaba pasando. En ese momento los fieles le-vantábamos la cabeza para ver el pan convertido en cuerpo y el vino convertido en sangre. Lamentablemente el sacer-dote nos daba la espalda y no podíamos ver lo que ocurría sobre el altar. Sin embargo, respondíamos con las palabras del apóstol Tomás: "Señor mío y Dios mío". Estas palabras reconocen y adoran la presencia de Jesús en el pan y el vino. A este momento se le consideraba el más importante de la misa. No obstante, el Concilio Vaticano II vino a enseñarnos que este es el momento cumbre, junto con toda la Plegaria Eucarística, pues toda la misa es igualmente importante, excepto que durante la Plegaria Eu-carística alcanzamos el punto más alto de la celebración. Por esa razón ya no hay campanita, pues ahora escu-chamos todo en nuestro propio idioma, así como los discípu-los las escucharon de Cristo, en su propio idioma. -- Fray Gil-berto Cavazos-Glz, OFM

LEARNING ABOUT THE CHURCH AT MISSION SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO Our 4th graders took a field trip to Mission San Juan Capistrano to experience this living history of the Catholic Church in California. All fourth graders in California schools study the state’s history including the missions. Students in Catholic schools go one step further. They also learn about the work of the Church through the pious mis-sionary, who walked much of what is now California, and brought Christianity to the American Indians, and the role of the missionary Church in creating religious communi-ties along the West Coast in the late 1700s.
