“I was sick, I’m sick right now…” Herb Stevens told the Monrovia Weekly Monday morning. Stevens was talking, of course, about the helicop-ter that was shot down killing 22 Navy SEALs and several other military personnel and a K-9 by Taliban forces in Af-ghanistan Saturday.

As he wiped the tears from his eyes, the 91 year former Naval officer whose official job title was ‘Specialist X’ – told Beacon Media that he knows, even though not one himself, a Navy SEAL is, by far, the “ most stressful occupation in the military “ and said this is the branch of the Navy for which he has the highest regard.

Jim is a 20 year veteran of the Monrovia Police De-partment. He was first hired in 1991 as a Police Officer. He progressed through the ranks and was appointed to the rank of Police Sergeant in 1998, Police Lieutenant in 2002 and then to Police Captain in 2008. He was appointed to the position of Interim Police Chief in May, 2011 upon the retirement of former Police Chief Johnson. Mayor Mary Ann Lutz said, “I have known Jim along time, and he is definitely the right man for the job. Mon-rovia has many challenges ahead and I am confident Jim will lead this department with integrity and wisdom.”

A man died Saturday morning when he fell from a 50-foot cliff at Eaton Can-yon Park in the Angeles National Forest. The vic-tim’s girlfriend unsuccess-fully attempted to rescue him. She was safely air-lifted and was transported to a local hospital where she was treated for minor injuries.

On July 31, another

hiker died in a similar area of Eaton Canyon. And on Friday, a man broke his legs when he fell from this same cliff and had to be airlifted to a local hospital.

Authorities are now warning visitors about safe-ty at Eaton Canyon after a series of accidents at the popular trails.

The author of the fol-lowing e-mail is probably of my generation or the next one down. The last line said, “Please forward this on to an-other selfish old person who needs a lesson in conserva-tion from a smartass young person.” I’m following his/her advice and sharing it with you.

In the line at the store, the cashier told an older woman that she should bring her own grocery bags be-cause plastic bags weren’t good for the environment.

The woman apologized to her and explained, “We didn’t have the green thing back in my day.”

The clerk responded, “That’s our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environ-ment.”

She was right -- our gen-eration didn’t have the green thing in its day.

Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and steril-ized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and

over. So they really were re-cycled. But we didn’t have the green thing back in our day.

We walked up stairs, because we didn’t have an elevator or escalator in ev-ery store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn’t climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks. But she was right. We didn’t have the green thing in our day.

Back then, we washed the baby’s diapers because we didn’t have the throw-away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burn-ing up 220 volts -- wind and solar power really did dry the clothes. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that old lady is right; we didn’t have the green thing back in our day.

Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handker-chief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of Montana.

In the kitchen, we blend-ed and stirred by hand be-cause we didn’t have electric machines to do everything for us.

When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used a wadded up old newspaper to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bub-

ble wrap.Back then, we didn’t

fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn’t need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she’s right; we didn’t have the green thing back then.

We drank from a foun-tain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water.

We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But we didn’t have the green thing back then.

Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service.

We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an en-tire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn’t need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint.

But isn’t it sad the cur-rent generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn’t have the green thing back then?

On August 8, Pasadena Police Chief Phillip L. San-chez hosted promotional cer-emony for the department’s newest leaders. These pro-motions ranged from Deputy Chief to Corporal for a total of six promotions.

Dear Editor:As many of you know, I have been very rough on the LA County Department of

Public Works, specifically the Water Resource Division who were responsible for the destruction of the Arcadia Woodlands in January. Actually listening to the legitimate concerns of the local community is anathema to the culture of the DPW’s Water Re-sources Division.

I have recently had an extremely positive experience with the Flood Maintenance Division of the DPW, specifically Keith Tang, Mike Long and Crew Chief Albert (sor-ry, I missed his last name). I would like to commend their efforts and genuine desire to treat the local community like their customers (which they are).

Keith, Mike and Albert were tasked to perform fire clearance in the area to the north and west of the Santa Anita Debris Basin. The area to be cleared was between the maintenance road and the back yard fences of the homes along Highland Oaks Drive.

About six weeks ago, I went for a walk in this area and discovered that a major fire clearance project was underway. I was dismayed to see that the portion that had already been cleared was performed far too aggressively. All trees (except for oaks) had been cut down including many native 18” dia. elderberry trees. In addition, many large patches of native and non-native prickly pear, that in actuality act as a fire bar-rier, had been cleared. There was also evidence that heavy equipment was being used to scrape the ground which promotes the growth of non-native and highly flammable grasses in the upcoming years.

I contacted Mr. Keith Tang of the Maintenance Division by phone and told him of my concerns. He was very interested in making sure that the fire clearance was done correctly so we set up a meeting. Keith and the fire clearance project supervisor, Albert met me at the site and I pointed out the improper fire clearance practices that were be-ing used. Keith said that he would request that the Arcadia Fire Department come out to the site to get their take on proper clearance methods.

A few days later, Keith Tang, Mike Long, Albert and three members of the Arca-dia Fire Department met at the site. We all agreed on how clearance on the remainder of the site would be performed.

Yesterday, I went for a walk through that area and found that the fire clearance on the area performed after our meetings was performed perfectly. I would like to person-ally thank Keith, Mike and Albert in addition to the Arcadia Fire Department for taking the time out of their busy schedules to work together with a member of the community (especially one that has created many headaches for the DPW in the past). The effort has paid off and I look forward to working with the Flood Maintenance Division on their future maintenance projects to ensure that maintaining habitats and the environ-ment are included in the planning process.

Downtown Sierra Madre will be swinging this week, to the sounds of the Gem City Jazz Cats. The Jazz Cats, formed in 2009 as a 13-piece combo, now have 18 players, plus three vocalists. They will per-form in Kersting Court as part of Friday Night Live, put on each summer by the Sierra Madre Chamber of Commerce. Veterans of street fairs, private parties and benefit concerts, the Jazz Cats have performed several times before in Si-erra Madre, including the Wine and Jazz Walk, Fri-day Night Live, and this year’s 4th of July Com-munity Picnic. But his love of music goes further. Hailed as the 2009 Citi-zen of the Year by the Pasa-dena Weekly’s Readers Poll and revered for his commu-nity involvement and philan-thropy, Vener has not only produced more than 1000 live music performances but 100 plus major fundraisers benefitting over 75 commu-nity organizations, primarily from Pasadena, but also from around the globe. Vener also served as President and CEO of the California Phil-harmonic for more than a decade.

Vener’s family roots in Pasadena date as far back to the Great Depression when his grandfather owned a pawn shop on Colorado Blvd. Vener attended Poly-technic, La Salle High School and Pasadena City College before earning an EMBA from Claremont Graduate College.

His earlier Pasadena ties also include becoming an Eagle Scout, helping handi-capped children at the Boys Club and spending 8 years volunteering for the Pasade-na Pops Orchestra, which his father, Maestro Victor Vener, founded.

André was 22 when Vic-tor established the California Philharmonic. It was then that he was introduced to the world of non-profits and has been committed to Pasa-dena, quality music and phi-lanthropy, without missing a beat, ever since.

André Vener: Keeping Music Live in Pasadena


Five thousand athletes from 93 nations competed in the World Masters Track and Field Championships in Sacramento. Nineteen hundred fifteen athletes represented the United States. One of the high-lights of the competition included former Olympian Zola Budd Pieterse, well known for her race in the

1984 Olympics with Mary Decker Slaney. Willie Banks of the United States, former world record hold-er, competed in the triple jump, high jump and long jump. Many other former Olympians competed.

People as young as 35 and as old as 101 com-peted in track and field events like pole vault, shot

put, 100 meter dash, 5,000 meter run as well as the marathon -- 37 different events in all were contest-ed. These athletes repre-sent the finest in the world when it comes to track and field as well as health and fitness. Many competitors were everyday people who were not near any of the records but enjoyed the fellowship of being a part of an international festival of good will, fun, and great memories.

As a correspondent for the Arcadia Weekly I asked many incredible athletes “Why are you competing?” The familiar comment I got from many of them was “I want to stay healthy and fit and I want to challenge myself!” Daily workouts with healthy nu-trition plus setting realistic goals brought them to this competition feeling youth-

ful, excited about life and looking forward to living many, many years ahead!

Arcadians Ernie Smith and Sarah Sneider com-peted with some of the world’s greatest athletes in their age group. Ernie Smith is 77 years young and throws the shot put! He has been throwing the shot for over 50 years! He works out 3 times a week with Coach Sneider, eats very healthy food, gets plenty of rest, and depends on God to help him to stay excited about life. Sarah Sneider, age 66, started her training for the long jump only a few years ago. President Barack Obama has nominated Anneila Sargent, vice pres-ident for student affairs and the Rosen Professor of Astronomy, to the Na-tional Science Board, the governing body of the Na-tional Science Foundation.

As an astronomer, Sar-gent studies disks of gas and dust that form stars and planets. She first ar-rived at Caltech more than 40 years ago as a graduate student. Since then, she has worked as a research fellow, a member of the professional staff, a senior

research fellow, and a se-nior research associate, becoming a professor in 1998. Sargent has served as the director of the Owens Valley Radio Observatory and the Combined Array for Research in Millime-ter-Wave Astronomy. She has also been president of the American Astro-nomical Society, chair of NASA’s Space Science Advisory Committee, and chair of the National Re-search Council’s Board of Physics and Astronomy. A former member of the National Science Founda-

tion’s Mathematical and Physical Sciences Advisory Committee, she is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

The National Science Board consists of 25 mem-bers who serve six-year appointments. Eight mem-bers are nominated every two years and must be confirmed by the Senate. Previous members from Caltech include Barry Bar-ish, the Linde Professor of Physics, Emeritus; the late Lee DuBridge, physicist, former Caltech president, and science advisor to

Presidents Harry Truman and Richard Nixon; and the late William Fowler, astrophysicist and Nobel laureate.

No matter how many times I fly on an airplane, I still enjoy the rumble of the wheels picking off from the ground, the speed of the plane taking flight into the skies, and the weight of its altitude lifting off your shoulders. And 14 hours from now, I will still be waiting in that cramped economy class seating area, eating airplane food, and getting up now and then - to use the restroom, say hi to relatives sitting on the other side of the plane, or peering through the window at a glance toward the ant-sized cars and specs of people.

Arriving at our first destination, Kunming, Chi-na, we (Mom, Dad, Aunt, Uncle, and I) entered noth-ing but humidity and hot winds blowing our faces. Walking through to the lo-cal areas of town, we toured

most of Western China’s highlights. From the sce-nic parks of Tiger Leap-ing Gorge to their famous temples, we experienced everything.

One of our very first stops was the Reed Flute Caves, which was highlight-ed by its colorful lighted landscape of stalagmites and stalactites, forming a mountainous appearance while leaving the lights gleaming from behind the rocks. Taking a break from the humidity outside, we continued to venture in-side the cave to find them shaped into trees, carved into statues, and formed into the fantasies of dragons and castles. Going deeper into the cave, there was only more of the variety of colored rocks, forming more of the recognizable symbols of the Christmas

spirit.However, one of my

favorite places had to be Ti-ger Leaping Gorge. Locat-ed in a nearby city, called Lijiang, we exhaustingly walked down 2,000 steps to find ourselves surrounded by the meaning of beauty and adventure all in itself. While trees and lakes sur-rounded its vicinity, rushing and roaring rapids came crashing down like a gigan-tic waterfall that’s nearly a few feet away from you.

But even more excit-ing was the lake nearby it, as it was my first time ever riding on top of a yak. Though I was only able to ride a very short distance, it amazed me to be in the middle of the river, watch-ing the water slide down farther beneath me. Sim-

Huntington Medical Foundation (HMF) an-nounced today that Goli Compoginis, M.D., a derma-tologist and graduate of the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California, will be joining its medical staff on August 8. She will be located at the HMF office in Pasadena.

“I feel very fortunate to be joining an outstanding medical team right here in the community where I live,” said Dr. Compoginis. “Hun-tington Medical Foundation has always been dedicated to providing the highest quality healthcare through innova-tive programs and personal, patient-friendly care. I look forward to bringing my en-thusiasm and background to this team.”

A resident of Southern California for most of her life, Dr. Compoginis earned her Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Duke Universi-ty and then joined the UCLA Department of Child Psychia-try. Her experiences there led her to medical school at USC where she was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society during her third year, an honor awarded to only the top 5 percent of her class.

While in medical school Dr. Compoginis con¬ducted research on malignant mela-noma and spent two sum-mers at Camp Wonder, a

program for children with severe skin diseases. As chief resident at Los Angeles County/USC Medical Cen-ter, Dr. Compoginis received extensive training in all as-pects of medical, surgi¬cal and cosmetic dermatology. She did her internship at Huntington Memorial Hos-pital and is a member of the American Academy of Der-matology.

Dermatology is literally the study of the skin – that branch of medicine con-cerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases of the skin, hair, nails, oral cavity and geni-tals. Among the most com-mon skin conditions treated by dermatologists are acne, herpes, hives, rosacea, warts and skin cancer, from the slow-growing basal cell car-cinoma to the hives, rosacea, warts and skin cancer, from the slow-growing basal cell carcinoma to the potentially fatal melanoma. Dermatolo-gists also treat a wide array of bacterial, fungal or viral infec-tions in the skin.

“Some skin diseases are serious and deadly, while others are just annoy-ing; and some are disfiguring while others are barely vis-ible,” said Dr. Compoginis. “Don’t take a chance or try to self-diagnose. When you see something out of the or-dinary, the best thing to do is have it checked out for peace

of mind and early interven-tion if necessary.”

Outside the office, Dr. Compoginis enjoys reading, hiking, movies, cooking and watching college basketball. She has served on the Poly-technic School alumni board since 2007 and lives with her husband in Pasadena.

ter CH-47 was shot down mo-ments after liftoff after a call for help from another special forces group in Afghanistan. Known to be the best of the best, 30 U.S. military mem-bers were killed as well as one highly specially trained dog named Bart, in the crash, 22 being Navy SEALs. Heard to be in a firefight, a western mili-tary official claimed that the chopper had been brought down by a rocket-propelled grenade minutes after takeoff in the mountainous region of the Wardak province. Of-ficials also reported 22 men were members of SEAL Team 6, which was a part of the team involved with the Bin Laden raid. Officially known as the Naval Spe-cial Warfare Development Group (DEVGRU), Team 6 members help to super-vise the Army’s Delta Force along with other units.

Stevens and his wife Mil-dren Lapson, lowered their flag -which is prominently placed on their front lawn of their Monrovia home – to half staff over the weekend in memory of those who lost their lives in this attack which Stevens says he considers the “worst since Pearl Harbor.”

Captain Winterholler. The Captain led Stevens and oth-er who were assigned to In-telligence duty. Stevens, who speaks 7 languages fluently, was the perfect fit for the job. He spoke not only German but the many distinctive dia-lects fluently and masterfully.

His primary assignment was to remove all Naval or-dinance from captured Hun-garian and German gunboats on the Danube. Stevens’ job entailed explaining to the prisoners that they were re-moving all the weapons and ammunition from the seized boats. Once dismantled from enemy gunboats, these weap-ons were transported to the “Vienna Vault” where they were blown up and rendered useless.

Stevens said it was a little different when he was in the Navy. “ We could face the en-emy then”…now its far more impersonal, he said.

leen Menzie Lesko Mon-day whose forthcoming bi-ography She Ran Between the Raindrops: Jeanne Devereaux Perkins, Prima Ballerina of Vaudeville and Broadway recounts the extraordinary life of a precocious child ballet dancer from Saint Louis, Missouri, born on October 31, 1912.

Deveraux Perkins as-serted that she performed before more European crowned heads of state than any other vaudevil-lian of her era and loved to re-create the triumph of her Royal Command Performance before King George V and Queen Mary at the London Palla-dium in 1935.

Deveraux Perkins noted that she was the first ballerina and the only American to succeed Anna Pavlova’s perfor-mance in 1912. 26 years later she would be cho-sen to perform for King George VI and Queen Elizabeth on a lake in Paris’ Bois de Boulogne. She vividly described her spine tingling thrill when performing in the 1940s on Radio City Music Hall’s massive stage, and when in 1946 she had led the first USO troupe of performers to Japan shortly after the war had ended.

Deveraux Perkins be-came an international star in variety entertainment as a professional toe dancer during the first half of the twentieth century. Some vaudevillians did not make the transition to radio or television. Post retirement in 1952 she fell into rela-

tive obscurity in the annals of show business, but “pos-sessed the intelligence, curiosity, and creativity to reinvent herself for four more careers.” According to her official biographer, Menzie Lesko. “Jeanne was one of the last vaude-villians of her era, and her personal story illuminates in a special way a dramatic period of American popu-lar entertainment and cul-ture” she added.

Deveraux Perkins ca-reer as an international prima ballerina spanned nearly three decades when she married Thomas Per-kins of Pasadena in 1952.

Deverauz Perkins, already performing at age eleven, accompanied her determined mother on her first vaudeville tour on the Orpheum circuit at age thirteen.

Needing to support her family financially, in late 1926 after turn-ing fourteen she left Saint Louis and her mentally ill father and went to New York with her mother to begin a career in show business. Although classi-cally trained, like other toe dancers of her era she did not have the luxury to join one of the few fledging élite ballet companies, but needed to make a living in the popular and lucrative venues of popular variety entertainment. To distin-guish herself as a specialty act and to protect her ar-tistic integrity, Jeanne pro-moted herself as a “prima ballerina,” and stipulated in her contracts that she would not perform any nude dances.

Over her career

Jeanne gave over six thou-sand paid performances, as well as five hundred benefits. She played at least seven times on all the vaudeville circuits that

combined stage shows and films in America’s cities.

She was also a regular performer in the popular summer operettas, in the early 1930s danced in a feature movie released by Fox and another by Warner Bros., and from the late 1930s through the 1940s was a soloist at

Radio City Music Hall. She danced in shows at New York City’s famous Roxy Theatre, in a George White musical starring Ed Wynn, on a vaudeville

tour “Jeanne Devereaux and the Russell Markert Dancers” (later the Radio City Rockettes),” in a Fan-chon and Marco “Idea” show, in Earl Carroll’s Vanities,” and in Clifford Fisher’s Folies Bergere. In 1949 she performed on Milton Berle’s popular television show The Texa-

co Star Theatre imperson-ating the famous blonde singer and dancer Marilyn Miller, who had starred in the Ziegfeld Follies in the 1920s.

Two highlights of Jeanne’s dancing career took place in Europe and Asia. Jeanne claimed to have danced before more members of royalty than any other American per-former of her time. In 1935 while performing at the London Palladium she was selected to dance in a Royal Command Performance before King George V and Queen Mary. She was the first ballerina since Anna Pav-lova in 1912 and the first American ballerina ever to be invited to perform in a Royal Command Per-formance, an annual phil-anthropic event to raise money for old-time Brit-ish variety artists. In 1938 while performing at the Bal Taborin nightclub in Paris, she was again invit-ed to dance before British royalty, the time for King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in the Bois de Boulogne during their first state trip abroad. Later, in 1946 she led the first USO troupe of performers on a landmark tour to Japan shortly after the bombs had decimated Hiroshima and Nagasaki and forced a surrender that ended the war. Her description of her experience in Japan via Hawaii, Guam, the Philippines, and Okinawa, with performances also in those islands, is riveting and historical.

Deverauz Perkins bi-ography includes both pub-

lic records like newspaper reviews as well as feature articles and theatrical post-ers. Menzie Lesko went thought countless Playbills, as well as personal notes, held interviews, and read family letters. Her life’s story “depicts the exhila-rating yet exhausting life-style of a vaudevillian—a trouper—both onstage and offstage, riding the trains to the next town on the vaudeville circuits to per-form five live shows daily as a prelude to a feature film and the spine tingling thrill of performing in one of the palatial presentation theatres in New York like Radio City Music Hall.” Biographer Kathleen Men-zie Lesko said.

After her marriage to Thomas Perkins in 1952, Deverauz Perkins started the Devereaux Ballet Arts School in Pasadena from 1952 where she taught un-til 1964.

In 1980 until her retire-ment in 2008 at age nine-ty-six Deverauz Perkins was a devoted researcher (Reader) and writer at the Huntington Library, where she worked on her lec-tures and a biography of her “historical soulmate” Grace Nicholson, a pio-neering collector and en-trepreneur whose home is now Pacific Asia Museum.

After a four-month convalescence Jeanne passed away in a Pasadena nursing home on July 28, 2011, at the age of ninety-eight with her husband Tom at her side.

SM Fire Department and SM Search and Rescue Joint TrainingThe Sierra Madre Fire De-partment and the Sierra Madre Search and Res-cue Team will have a joint training session on Satur-day, August 13 from 8 a.m. to noon. This training will stimulate a large scale inci-dent that may result in mass civilian casualties. The training better prepares these groups for major di-sasters such as earthquakes, wildfires, and other unfore-seeable incidents. The Fire Department and Search and Rescue teams are look-ing for more volunteers to assist with the stimulation as an “actor” simulating injury requiring evacua-tion. Volunteers of all ages are invited, and children

should be accompanied by an adult. Lunch will be pro-vided to all who attend this exercise. t r o t s out its more va-pid, CGI-heavy, action-adven-ture offerings during the sum-mer months is expected, but for the filmmakers to suggest that Rise of the Planet of the

Apes is somehow a prequel to the 1960s classic seems al-most sacrilege. Neither capa-ble director Rupert Wyatt nor a talented cast that includes James Franco, John Lithgow, and Slumdog Millionaire’s Freida Pinto manage to save

the film from cliché and silli-ness. Will (Franco) is a genet-ic scientist on the search for a cure to Alzheimer’s. After being forced to care for Caes-er, one of his chimpanzee test subjects, Will discovers that a particular test serum not only

repairs brain cells but is actu-ally increasing Caeser’s intel-ligence, exponentially. Then, through a series of hackneyed plot-devices, Caeser is taken to primate jail, where his su-per-mental monkey powers allow him to figure out how

to smuggle in enough smart serum for the rest of his new friends, whereby mutiny and mayhem quickly ensue. On its own merits, the film does provide some moments of bland entertainment, particu-larly the action-sequences to-

ward the end. But, as much as it thrives in computer-gen-erated wizardry, it lacks in all of the insight and profun-dity expressed in the original, which explored the question what if apes ruled the planet?, so interestingly.

ply put, the bumpy, furry 5 minute experience was the highlight of my trip.

Although the fuzziness of that first ride was quite bumpy, venturing into an-other province with our gi-gantic bus was even worse. With the rocks and dips ev-ery second, our trip toward Shangri La was exactly like riding the Indiana Jones ride at Disneyland. We ba-sically bumped into every

direction, rocking back and forth on an out-of control vehicle.

When we finally ar-rived, however, the expe-rience was simply breath-taking. Large landscapes of peaceful and beautiful views surrounded us in a 360° direction. Filled with plenty of trees, lakes, and mountains, the picturesque view would be a photogra-pher’s dream spot. On the

high tops of hills, temples awaited us with golden stat-ues and intricate pictures detailing China’s past.

But no matter how many times I go to China, I will still enjoy all of its many landscapes, road trips, and traditions, as their scenic views continue taking my breath away in a glance to-ward heaven on earth.

On August 3, 2011, about 2:00 a.m. in the morning, Pasadena Po-lice Officers observed two Honda Civics stopped on Mountain St. near the 210 freeway off-ramp. They watched the driver of one car get out and get into the passenger side of the sec-ond car. Officers believed the suspects were aban-doning a stolen car and attempted to conduct an investigative stop as the car drove away. The suspects

attempted to evade the offi-cers and lost control of the car sideswiped a parked van at the intersection of Sunset Avenue and Wash-ington Place then collided into a utility pole. Both sus-pects were injured in the collision and transported to a local hospital where they are being treated and will be arrested upon re-lease.

The investigation con-firmed both Honda Civics were unreported stolen

cars. The car the suspects abandoned was stolen from Los Angeles. The car the suspects crashed was stolen from Rancho Cu-camonga.

Both suspects are adult male Hispanic and residents of Pasadena. One of the suspects is on active parole for a stolen vehicle conviction. The names are being withheld until their identities are confirmed.

Two Arrested, Two Stolen Cars Recovered

Erwin Molina, 21, was attempting to scale a wall at the side of the lower Eaton Canyon waterfall a week ago Sunday and died of his injuries two days later in the hospital. Rescue teams said the incident is one in a surge of recent calls within the year.

Rescue crews said a common mistake hikers make is wandering off the trail and getting lost. The

wrong clothes make mat-ters worse and not being fit for a long climb adds to the problem.

Cell phones can be a big help.

If you are in an area where you can get a cel-lular signal, take a pic-ture with your cell phone. Then, email it to a friend who can then download it to Google Earth. Then, you’ll see a thumbtack of

your exact location within 200 feet.

Also, your phone’s flash can work as a signal. Better still, avoid trouble altogether by researching your trail and learning the risks involved, keeping in mind that it can be much easier to go up than com-ing down. Also, be pre-pared by bringing a flash-light and some extra water.

AMD is one of the most common causes of vision loss in adults over the age of 60. And most people who develop AMD ignore the early warning signs. AMD occurs when there is a loss of function or deterioration of the center part of your retina called the macula, which allows sharp, detailed vision necessary for activities such as reading, watching TV, and driving. The visual symptoms of AMD involve a loss of central vision (blurred, distorted, or dark area in your central vision) while the peripheral vision is unaf-fected.

There are 2 main types of AMD, dry and wet. Ap-proximately 90% of people with AMD have the dry form. Dry AMD causes a

gradual visual loss, but the loss usually is not severe. Some people with dry AMD will develop the wet form, which can cause a sudden decline in vision that is more likely to cause severe visual loss. Symptoms may be sud-den, with a severe and rapid loss of central vision.

The exact cause of AMD is not completely understood, however fac-tors that increase the risk of developing AMD include age, family history of AMD, smoking, sunlight exposure, and diet. The risk of having AMD increases with age.

The diagnosis of AMD is based on a clinical exam of your retina. Many times an the examination is supple-mented advanced imaging procedures such as fluores-cein angiogram (FA) which will allow your eye doctor to see blood vessels in your eyes and optical coherence tomography (OCT) which obtains a cross sectional view of the retina. Both of these procedures are done in your doctor’s office on the same day of your office visit.

Treatment for AMD is based on whether it is dry or wet. For dry AMD, the Age-

Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) showed that high-dose anti-oxidant vitamins can reduce the risk of pro-gression of the disease. In ad-dition, the risk of worsening AMD may be reduced by reducing risk factors through maintaining a healthy life style, for example, quitting smoking, eating lots of fruits and vegetables, and exercis-ing regularly. Wet AMD is treated primarily with injec-tions of medication directly into the eye to prevent the growth of new blood vessels. Margaret Shepherd Mo-rash passed away July 23, 2011 at her home surround-ed by her family. Midge was born and raised in the Berke-ley area, where she received her degree in Public Health from UC Berkeley. After marrying Tal Morash in 1945 they lived in Utah and Nevada, before moving to Sierra Madre with their four children in 1961. After her children were grown Midge worked as a laboratory tech-nologist at the Sierra Madre Medical Center.

Midge was one of the founding members of the Sierra Madre Environmental Action Council and her oth-er community involvement included Girl Scouts, Parks and Recreation Commission, Sierra Madre United Meth-odist Church, P.E.O., and the Friends of Sierra Madre library. She also volunteered with many other organiza-tions including Casa Colina Outdoor Adventures, Grace Center, Lummis Home, Sierra Madre School, and League of Women Voters. In addition to her commu-nity activities, Midge had a deep commitment to nation-al and world issues. In 2000 Midge was selected as Sierra Madre’s Older American of the year, and was the Grand Marshall of the Sierra Madre July 4th parade in 2009.

Midge and Tal direct-ed numerous youth sum-mer camps in Colorado,

Wyoming and California. Throughout her life Midge loved adventure and travel, music and the arts, and will-ingly shared this love with others. Her love of nature and the out-of-doors was con-tagious and she was fondly known to many as “Mother Nature”.

Midge was preceded in death by her husband Tal and her son John. She is sur-vived by her daughter Kim Lazaro (Lonny); daughter Anne Johnson (Chip); son Paul Morash (Carrie); grand-sons Andrew and Michael

Johnson and Wyatt Morash; and daughter-in-law Sabra Wohlenberg. Midge was a loving mother and friend. She will be deeply missed.

A memorial service will be held at the Sierra Madre United Methodist Church on Saturday August 27, 2011 at 4:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, dona-tions can be made to the Si-erra Madre Environmental Action Council, the Friends of the Sierra Madre Library Building Fund or the Sierra Madre United Methodist Church.

MARGARET “MIDGE” MORASH Passes Away at 88

One of the last vaudevillians of her era, Jeanne De-vereaux Perkins, born in Saint Louis, Missouri on Octo-ber 31, 1912, was a precocious child bal-lerina who became an international star on the live stages of popular entertain-ment during the first half of the twentieth century. Devereaux Perkins passed away peacefully of natural causes in a Pasadena nursing home on July 18, 2011, at age of

ninety-eight, with her husband Thomas Perkins at her side.

Jeanne is sur-vived by her be-loved husband Thomas, her many loving, admiring friends, and the en-during spirit of all the talented perform-ers of her era, and a forthcoming biogra-phy. Donations in Jeanne’s memory can be made to the Pacific Asia Museum and the Huntington Library in Pasadena.


Arcadia PDFor the period of Sunday, July 31, through Saturday, August 6, the Police Department re-sponded to 950 calls for ser-vice of which 133 required formal investigations. The following is a summary report of the major incidents handled by the Department during this period.Sunday, July 31:At about 3:50 a.m., a resi-dential burglary occurred in the 900 block of Bal-boa Drive. The suspect shattered the front door window with a large rock and entered the residence. Once inside, the suspect was confronted by a resi-dent, and fled the location on foot. The suspect was described as a tall male, with a light skin complex-ion wearing dark pants. No loss was reported. Shortly after 9:00 a.m., of-ficers responded to the 1500 block of South Fifth Avenue regarding a white male in the backyard of the residence looking in-side through a window. The suspect was located and detained. An investi-gation revealed he had an outstanding warrant. The 23-year-old White male was placed under arrest for sus-picion of burglary as well as the warrant. Monday, August 1:At approximately 8:28 a.m., officers responded to the 1100 block of West Duarte Road regarding a suspicious circumstance re-port. Officers were advised that on Saturday, August 30th at about 9:15 a.m., two male subjects had identi-fied themselves as AT&T employees and stated they needed to come in and check the wiring inside the location. The suspects, were described as a White male in his mid 30’s, 5’-09”, heavyset and a His-panic male in his mid 30’s, 6’-01” and heavyset. Once inside, the resident fol-lowed the suspects around and they left shortly after. The resident later called AT&T who confirmed that no technicians had been sent to their residence that day. No loss was reported and a composite of the two suspects has been distribut-ed to surrounding agencies. Between 1:00 a.m. and 2:22 p.m., an auto bur-glary occurred in the 100 block of North First Av-enue. Suspect(s) smashed the front passenger side window and stole a purse containing a wallet, credit

cards, a cell phone and cash.Tuesday, August 2:Shortly before 2:00 a.m., officers responded to the 00 block of East Colorado Boulevard regarding a dis-turbance. Officers located and detained a 32-year-old Hispanic male who was pounding on the victim’s door refusing to leave. The suspect was under the influ-ence of alcohol and was arrested for being drunk in public.At about 5:40 p.m., loss prevention personnel from Macy’s at the Westfield Santa Anita Mall, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, detained a juvenile for theft. The suspect took merchandise, concealed it, and walked out of the store without paying. The 14-year-old Hispanic male was arrested for theft.Wednesday, August 3:At approximately 11:53 a.m., officers respond-ed to the 00 block of Bonita Street regarding an unconscious male adult. Upon arrival, the Arcadia Fire Depart-ment Paramedics were on scene attempting life saving procedures, but were unsuccessful. The 47-year-old White male passed away from apparent natural causes, no signs of foul play were present. The Coroner was called to determine the cause of death. Between 8:30 p.m. and 10:50 p.m., an auto theft occurred in the 2000 block of Carolwood Drive. Suspect(s) stole a 1996 Honda Accord, red, 4-door that was parked to the front of the location.Thursday, August 4:Between August 2nd at 5:00 p.m. and August 4th at 3:30 p.m., a burglary oc-curred in the 200 block of West Huntington Drive. Suspect(s) pried open the locked doors of a Champi-on Broadband Cable utility box and stole four deep-cell batteries.Between August 3rd at 7:00 p.m. and August 4th at 10:00 a.m., an auto theft occurred in the 900 block of Arcadia Avenue. Suspect(s) stole an un-locked, 1995 Honda Ac-cord, blue, 4-door that was parked in the rear parking lot of the location.Friday, August 5:Between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., a residential burglary occurred in the 1800 block of South Eight Avenue.

Suspect(s) entered the location through unknown means and stole a laptop and a tool bag.At about 1:48 p.m., officers responded to the Westfield Santa Anita Mall, 400 South Baldwin, regarding a reckless driver in the parking lot travel-ing at a high rate of speed. The suspect vehicle was located and a traffic stop was conduct-ed. An investigation revealed the 22-year-old Hispanic male driver was intoxicated and was placed under arrest for DUI. Saturday, August 6:At about 12:12 p.m., offi-cers responded to the 2100 block of Canyon Road regarding a bear going i n t o t h e

r a g e of a residence. Officers at-tempted to drive the bear away but were unsuccess-ful. When the bear again attempted to enter the garage the officers fired a stun bag round at the bear and it ran out of the garage area. The bear then head-ed to the front door of the residence, at which time a second stun bag round was fired at the bear. The bear ran back into the wooded area and out of sight.At about 4:45 p.m., loss prevention personnel from JC Penney’s at the West-field Santa Anita Mall, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, detained three juveniles for theft. The suspect(s) took merchandise, concealed it, and walked out of the store without paying. The three 17-year-old Hispanic females were arrested for theft.

Monrovia PDDuring the last seven-day period, the Police Depart-ment handled 552 service events, resulting in 80 in-vestigations. Following are

the last week’s highlighted issues and events:Battery TheftsOn July 29, two curbside box battery thefts were re-ported in the early morn-ing hours. The boxes were pried open and the batter-ies stolen. The thefts oc-curred on Duarte at Mag-nolia and the 400 block of East Cherry. The investiga-tion is continuing. BatteryOn July 29 at 9:29 p.m., of-f i c e r s were flagged

down by a male subject who was bleeding from the mouth. He told officers he was jumped by two to three male juveniles.

No suspects were located. Investiga-

tion continuing.Wanted Robbery

Suspect ArrestedOn July 30 at 11:09 a.m., officers located a named robbery suspect they had been searching for exten-sively. The suspect was wanted for the robbery of a business in the 300 block of West Huntington that occurred on July 12. The suspect had approached a cashier with his hand in his jacket pocket and threatened to shoot her if she didn’t give him mon-ey from the register. After obtaining the cash, he fled the location. Officers had

identified the suspect and had been watching several locations he was known to frequent. He was located working on a vehicle in the city of Duarte and was ar-rested without incident.Domestic Violence / Child Abuse - Suspect ArrestedOn August 1 at 3:49 p.m., officers responded to the 400 block of East Los An-geles Avenue regarding a male subject hitting anoth-er subject with a bat. When officers arrived, they locat-ed a male subject that was

bleeding from a head in-jury. The two suspects

with the bat had left the location. The in-vestigation revealed that the subject with the head injury had physically abused his

girlfriend, with whom he has two children.

He had also physically abused one of the children. This subject was taken to a hospital for treatment. The identity of the two suspects that assaulted the domes-tic violence suspect is un-known at this time. The in-jured suspect was arrested after he was treated and released from the hospital. Investigation continuing. Hit and Run Traffic CollisionOn August 2 at 12:06 a.m., police received the report of a vehicle striking the Acapulco Restaurant building. The occupants of the vehicle fled the scene. Officers arrived and de-termined there were no injured patrons in the res-taurant and no occupants of the car remained at the scene. A driver’s license and an employee badge belonging to a female subject were found at the scene, along with an iden-tification card for another female subject. Further investigation revealed that

the driver at the time of the accident was probably the female with the identifica-tion card. A location check of her residence was made, but she was not located. The investigation is ongo-ing and charges for driving without a license and hit and run will be pursued. Investigation continuing.Felony VandalismOn August 3 at 7:25 a.m., a resident in the 400 block of East Olive reported her ve-hicle had been vandalized. The vehicle was parked on the street and had been keyed during the night. At about 12:01 p.m., officers returned to the location, as two other vehicles belong-ing to the same victim had also been keyed. All of the vehicles had been vandal-ized sometime between midnight and 7:25 a.m.

Sierra Madre PDDuring the week of Sunday, July 31st, to Saturday August 6th, the Sierra Madre Police Department responded to ap-proximately 282 calls for ser-vice. Manza-nita Ave. Unknown suspect(s) stole a detached removable blue hardtop belonging to a Jeep Wrangler between the evening of July 27th and the morning of July 30th. Saturday, August 6th:9:32 AM- Auto Burglary, 600 blk. E. Sierra Madre Blvd. Unknown suspect(s) entered a parked car on Friday Au-gust 5th, between 4:30 PM and 5:00 PM and removed the wallet from the victim’s purse leaving the purse be-hind. The victim notified the Police Department that some-one had tried to use her debit/credit cards.

SECTION 1. Recitals. The Recitals set forth above are true and correct and incorporated herein by reference. SECTION 2. Participation in the Alternative Voluntary Redevelopment Program. In accordance with Health and Safety Code Section 34193, and based on the Recitals set forth above, the City Council hereby determines that the City shall comply with the provisions of Part 1.9 of Division 24 of the Health and Safety Code, as enacted by AB 1X 27. SECTION 3. Payment Under Protest. Except as set forth in Section 4, below, the City Council hereby determines that the City shall make the community remittances set forth in Health and Safety Code section 34194 et seq. SECTION 4. Effect of Stay or Determination of Invalidity. City shall not make any community remittance in the event a court of competent jurisdiction either grants a stay on the enforcement of AB 1X 26 or AB 1X 27 or deter-mines that AB 1X 26 or AB 1X 27 are unconstitutional and therefore invalid, and all appeals therefrom are exhausted or unsuccessful, or time for filing an appeal therefrom has lapsed. Any community remittance shall be made under protest and without prejudice to the City’s right to recover such amount and interest thereon in the event that there is a final determination that AB 1X 26 and AB 1X 27 are unconstitutional. If there is a final determination that AB 1X 26 and AB 1X 27 are invalid, this Ordinance shall be deemed to be null and void and of no further force or effect.

SECTION 5. Implementation. The City Council hereby authorizes and directs the City Manager to take any action and execute any documents necessary to implement this Ordinance, including but not limited to notify-ing the Los Angeles County Auditor-Controller, the Controller of the State of California, and the California Department of Finance of the adoption of this Ordinance and the City’s agreement to comply with the provisions of Part 1.9 of Division 24 of the Health and Safety Code, as set forth in AB 1X 27.

SECTION 6. Additional Understandings and Intent. It is the understand-ing and intent of the City Council that, once the Agency is again authorized to enter into agreements under the CRL, the City will enter into an agree-ment with the Agency as authorized pursuant to Section 34194.2, whereby the Agency will transfer annual portions of its tax increment to the City in amounts not to exceed the annual community remittance payments to enable the City, directly or indirectly, to make the annual remittance payments. The City Council does not intend, by enactment of this Ordinance, to pledge any of its general fund revenues or assets to make the remittance payments. SECTION 7. CEQA. The City Council finds, under Title 14 of the Califor-nia Code of Regulations, Section 15378(b)(4), that this Ordinance is exempt from the requirements of the California Environmental Quality Act (“CEQA”) in that it is not a “project,” but instead consists of the creation and continua-tion of a governmental funding mechanism for potential future projects and programs, and does not commit funds to any specific project or program. The City Council, therefore, directs that a Notice of Exemption be filed with the County Clerk of the County of Los Angeles in accordance with CEQA Guide-lines. SECTION 8. Custodian of Records. The documents and materials that constitute the record of proceedings on which these findings are based are located at the City Clerk’s office located at 240 West Huntington Drive, P.O.
