Aalan záruba: Představy o změně vizuálního stylu jsem konzultoval s ondřejem Hra-

bem a jeho týmem při různých příležitostech vlastně od minulého roku, kdy jsem s di-

vadlem pár měsíců spolupracoval na vizuálním ztvárnění oslav jeho 15. výročí. ta ob-

časná setkání se stala pravidelnými někdy na přelomu března a dubna tohoto roku,

kdy jsme se dohodli na spolupráci. Chtěli jsme společně dát divadlu jasnější a pro

diváky čitelnější formu vizuální komunikace, která by se projevila nejdříve v čisté kor-

porátní linii a teprve na jejím základě vytvořit doplňující obrazové a výtvarné vrstvy,

které by odrážely rozmanitost programu, kterým je archa proti ostatním divadlům

charakteristická. od prvopočátku jsem věděl, že se této práci nechci věnovat sám,

nýbrž že bych rád postavil pro archu nový kreativní tým mladých a talentovaných lidí,

jejichž myšlení a uvažování by mohlo rezonovat s vizí nové vizuální prezentace archy.

naskytla se mi unikátní příležitost nabídnout spolupráci Mikuláši Macháčkovi, který

zrovna v té době po několika letech skvělé práce opustil řady známého Studia naj-

brt a jeho partnerce, designérce šárce zíkové. dali jsme dohromady obrysy nového

vizuálu, na jejichž základě pak Mikuláš se šárkou přišli s odlišným kreativním pro-

gramem, než jakým se archa dosud prezentovala. i když nechci, aby to vyznělo, že

by se mi nezamlouvala řada plakátů, které pro archu navrhovalo po odchodu Rvn

studio imagery. nová koncepce čistých a možná někdy až příliš rigidních typogra-

fických kompozic, rastrů a foto-typo asambláží mi však konvenovala pro další vývoj

do budoucna daleko víc. šárka také navrhla celou řadu zajímavých interiérových

instalací, které spíš současný prostor archy „čistí“ a celek, v souladu s jemnou typo-

hrou základního vizuálu, spíše akcentují tam, kde to bude potřeba. do třetice jsme

se také pustili do redesignu webu divadla. Spolu s kolegou z české televize, který

má výrazný podíl na renesanci práce s novými médii v této instituci, tomášem

Hodboděm,jsme připravili design a koncepci nových webových stránek.

Mikuláš Macháček: Rádi bychom, aby si lidé archu spojovali jak s kvalitním re-pertoárem, tak také s jasnou a zapama-tovatelnou vizuální tváří. to, co najdete v novinovém programu, se pak opakuje v ulicích, na webu, vstupence, v interiéru divadla. Poznávacím znakem by měly být výrazné písmové kompozice a spe-cifická barevnost tiskovin. základem je černobílé pojetí doplněné o jednu pes-trou barvu, která se mění vždy s novým dvouměsíčním programem.

Mnechtěli jsme zahodit původní identitu

archy a začít úplně od nuly. vrstvíme.

Jako natěrači v new yorku, co doneko-

nečna přetírají původní emaily a vzni-

ká tak originální charakter. inspirovali

jsme se základy, které vytvořil Rvn

a prolnuli je s novými prvky. trochu jiný

případ je interiér, kde se za léta provo-

zu v některých zákoutích sešly spíš ne-

chtěné vrstvy různých stylů, které čeká

alanem již zmiňované čištění.

Ano, já vím, ta otázka se nabízí a bude vždycky, protože Robert

vtiskl arše na počátku tak originální a promyšlenou formu vizuální

komunikace, že se prakticky každý, kdo ho následoval, následuje

a bude následovat, musí zamyslet, jak s tím jeho kreativním poten-

ciálem, který archu udělal archou, naložit. Myslím, že to řeknu za

oba, když potvrdím, že jsme s Mikulášem hodně přemýšleli o vaz-

bách na Robertovu práci. ať už to bylo třeba rozhodnutí opustit

postupně podlouhlý, výškový formát plakátu, který se stal pro

archu typický, nebo jak upravit původní logo tak, aby bylo ve své

finální formě lépe čitelné i v menších velikostech (třeba na nových

vstupenkách). Co jsme naopak vzali jako inspiraci z původního

vizuálu divadla, byl třeba systém dělení jednotlivých částí loga,

který pak Mikuláš volně uplatnil u typografických kompozic s fot-

kami z představení. Jako vazbu na Robertovu práci rovněž vní-

mám i dvoubarevnost měsíčních programů představení. Myslím

tím ty skládané „nudle“ do formátu dl (10 x 21 cm), které archa po

léta až do povodní v roce 2002 vydávala každý měsíc. Mám je

doma pořád schované. v podstatě jsme na tenhle systém chtěli

nějak volně navázat, a tak třeba vznikly noviny a v nich malé „ka-

lendáříky“ s programem na příští dva měsíce.

ASice jsem poukazoval na určité inspirační zdroje, ale nový vizuál je a bude,

až se kompletně zavede, dle mého, úplně novou kapitolou v historii divadla.

Mikuláš vnesl do základní koncepce čistý, typografický styl. ten je mi hodně

blízký. Jako nové korporátní písmo jsme zvolili písmo Platform. Má celou šíři

docela netypických znaků, je i ve svém výtvarném obrazu proměnné a v tom

ohledu dobře váže na rozmanitost žánrů, které archa svým divákům přiná-

ší. nový systém umožňuje „vrstvit“ písmo s fragmenty značky v propagační

linii a s různými rastry, které Mikuláš vymýšlí z částí fotek a ilustrací v linii in-

formační. v tom je nový vizuál opravdu specifický a tahle estetika se určitě

může vyvíjet dál do různých směrů, stejně jako Robertův styl před lety. Jsme

ale vlastně po 4 měsících pořád ještě v začátcích. Samozřejmě, nové prvky

a nové formáty jako noviny nebo odlišná práce s novým webem s sebou

přináší zcela jiné požadavky na kooperaci výtvarného týmu s produkcí

a vedením divadla. Ještě to není úplně vyladěné, ale spolu s Pavlínou Sva-

toňovou a Katarínou dudákovou, které mají za divadlo celý projekt vizuální

a marketingové proměny na starosti, se o to snažíme. dle mého to bude trvat

celou jednu sezónu, než se všechny změny podaří zrealizovat a celý systém

se usadí a rozvine. ale jsem optimista, že když se po té jedné sezóně bude-

me na stránkách novin bavit znovu, budeme hodnotit tuhle etapu už z úplně

jiné perspektivy. důležitý bude i názor diváků a hlavně, aby ta celá promě-

na pomohla divadlu nejen upoutat věrné a tradiční obecenstvo, ale také

získat nové zájemce o jeho program. to je základní cíl, který máme.

MUrčitě nejpříjemnějším momentem celé spolupráce je volnost, se kterou může-me návrhy realizovat, a s ní spojená důvěra, kterou jsme dostali. toho si opravdu vážíme. dokončené věci jsou pak nábojem pro další. na některé ná-pady by bylo potřeba více peněz, a ty pochopitelně v divadlech chybí. Mám na mysli především některé interiérové změny, které nelze udělat v rozsahu, jaký by si archa zasloužila.

visuaL styLe. HOw wiLL it Differ frOm

tHe arcHa’s current LOOk?

alan záruba: i essentially began discussing my ideas regarding the change

in visual style last year with ondřej Hrab and his team at various occasions on

which i spent several months working with the theater on the visual design for

its 15th anniversary celebrations. these occasional meetings started being re-

gular sometime this spring, when we agreed to work together. our shared goal

was to give the theater a clearer and for audiences more readable form of vi-

sual communication, one that would first be expressed purely on the business

level, on whose basis we would then create additional visual and artistic layers

that would reflect the archa’s diverse programming range. i knew from the be-

ginning that i did not want to work on the project alone, but that i would like to

put together a creative team of young people whose ideas and opinions could

resonate with the vision of the archa’s new visual presence. i had the unique

opportunity of offering a collaborative role to Mikuláš Macháček – who had

just left the renowned Studio najbrt after years of excellent work – and to his

partner, designer šárka zíková. but i didn’t want it to look as if i had merely fallen

for the series of posters that the imagery studio had designed for the archa af-

ter the departure of Robert v. novák. nevertheless, the new design of pure and

perhaps sometimes excessively rigid typographic compositions, grids, and

phototype assemblages suited me far more in terms of future developments. in

addition, šárka designed numerous interesting interiors that somehow “purify”

the current archa spaces and, where necessary, accentuate the whole, in har-

mony with the basic visual design’s subtle playing with text. and thirdly, we wan-

ted to redesign the theater’s website. Working with tomáš Hodboď from Czech

television, we came up with a design and layout for the new website.

MMikuláš Macháček: We would like for pe-ople to associate the archa with an ex-cellent repertoire as well as with a clear and memorable visual style. the design of the printed program is repeated on the streets, on the website, on the tickets, and in the theater’s interior. the printed ma-terials’ distinct textual composition and specific color scheme should be clear identifying features. the new look is based on a black-and-white vision, complemen-ted by one bright color that changes with each new bimonthly program.

wHat makes tHe tHeater’s visuaL styLe unique anD wHat unexpecteD

prObLems Or pOsitive experiences are yOu encOuntering During yOur wOrk?

Athat possibility is and always will be there, because Robert gave the

archa such an original and well-thought-out form of visual communi-

cation that practically anyone who came, comes, and will come af-

ter him must consider how to deal with the creative potential that has

made the archa what it is. i think i speak for both of us when i say that

Mikuláš and i spent a lot of time thinking about the linkages to Rober-

t’s work: for instance, in deciding to gradually abandon the elonga-

ted poster format that had become typical for the archa, or how to

alter the original logo so that its final form would be more readable

even at smaller sizes (such as on the new tickets). on the other hand,

one aspect of the theater’s original visual style that we let ourselves

be inspired by was the system of dividing up the individual sections

of the logo, which Mikuláš applied loosely in his typographic compo-

sitions with photographs from performances. i see another linkage to

Robert’s work in the dual-color scheme of the monthly program. Here

i am thinking of the folded dl-sized “noodles” (10 x 21cm), which the ar-

cha released every month for several years until the 2002 floods. i still

have them at home. essentially, our intention was to, in some way, loo-

sely follow up on this system, which resulted in the newspaper and the

little calendars inside containing a program for the next two months.

Mdefinitely the most gratifying part of the entire project is the freedom and trust with which we can realize or pro-posals. this is something that we truly appreciate. the finished items then be-come a source of inspiration for others. Some ideas require more money, and that is understandably something that theaters do not have much of. Here i am thinking primarily of certain interi-or changes that cannot be done to the extent that the archa deserves.

Aalthough i have mentioned certain sources of inspiration, the new visual de-

sign is and (once completely implemented) will be an entirely new chapter in

the theater’s history. Mikuláš gave the basic design a clean, typographic sty-

le that i feel a close affinity to. For the new corporate font, we chose Platform.

this font possesses a whole range of quite unusual symbols and has a varia-

ble visual look, all of which makes it a good fit for the diverse range of genres

presented at the archa. For promotional materials, the new system makes it

possible to “layer” writing with fragments of symbols; for informational ma-

terials, it can be layered with the various grids that Mikuláš designed using

parts of photographs and illustrations. in this regard, the new visual design is

truly unique, and its aesthetics definitely have room for developing further in

different directions, just like Robert’s style years ago. However, after four mon-

ths we are still really at the beginning. of course, new elements and new for-

mats like the newspaper, or the different approach to working with the new

website, all come with different requirements for the design team’s coopera-

tion with the theater’s production and management. We are still fine-tuning

this process, but we are trying our best to do so in cooperation with Pavlína

Svatoňová and Katarína dudáková. in my opinion, it will take an entire season

before all the changes can be implemented and the new system establishes

itself and begins to grow. but i am optimistic that, if we get together again af-

ter that season in order to talk on the pages of a newspaper, we will assess

this stage form an entirely different perspective. the audience’s opinion will

be important as well, and the main thing is that this transformation will help

the theater to not only captivate its traditional and loyal following, but also

garner additional interest in its repertoire. that is our basic goal.

identity and start totally from scratch. We

are layering. like painters in new york who

are constantly painting over the original

layers of enamel, thus creating an original

character. We let ourselves be inspired by

the foundations that novák created, and

interwove them with new elements. the

interiors are a somewhat different case.

Some corners of the building gathered to-

gether (mostly unconsciously) various lay-

ers of different styles, which now await the

purification that alan already mentioned.

se, že mluvíte-li s  fran-

couzem špatnou francouzštinou, tak

dělá, že vám nerozumí. němec prý vám opra-

vuje předložky a upozorňuje, že místo der, máte říci

v  třetím pádě mužského rodu dem. no a angličan nebo

američan? ti jsou na to deformování svojí mateřštiny tak zvyklí,

že jim to již nevadí. snaží se pochopit, co jim říkáte a odpovědět.

tedy porozumět. a to je přece cílem řeči! porozumět, pochopit se

vzájemně, komunikovat jako lidé, kteří jsou sice rozdělováni různými

jazyky a akcentem na odlišných samohláskách slov, ale jejichž cílem je

něco společného dělat. když chtěl bůh potrestat zpupnost lidí, kteří stavě-

li v babylonu věž až do nebe, potrestal je změnou řeči. potrestal je schop-

ností domluvit se. a tak jeden volal: podej mi cihlu, druhý ale rozuměl, že

chce vodu na maltu a stavba se nepodařila. člověk se nikdy do nebe po

schodech nedostal. i o tomto problému, provázejícím lidstvo od nepa-

měti, je divadelní festival akcent. k  špatnému akcentu, tedy důrazu

na jinou hlásku, nedokonalé intonaci věty, případně i nešikovně

zvolenému slovu, dodávejme úsměv, gesto rukou. to je uni-

verzální, tedy mezinárodní. snažme se porozumět jeden

druhému, a to jako jedinci, i jako národy. Jinak nepře-

žijeme. věřte mi. překonávejme akcent či na-

opak, klaďme ho na to správné místo

na porozumění !

they say that when you speak bad french to a frenchman he pretends not

to understand you. a german will correct your

prepositions and point out that you should use dem

instead of der in the masculine form of the third case. what

about an englishman or an american? they are so used to their

native tongue being butchered that they don’t even care anymore.

they try to listen to what you’re saying and to answer you. that is, to un-

derstand; which after all is the purpose of speech! to understand, to com-

prehend one another, to communicate like people, who though they may be

divided by different languages, accents and vowels, nevertheless want to

achieve something together. when god wanted to punish the arrogance of the

people who built the tower of babel up to heaven, he confused their languages.

He punished their ability to understand each other. and so someone would say

the akcent theatre festival is about this very problem, which has dogged

humankind since time immemorial. it’s about bad accents, emphasis on

the wrong syllable, weird intonations or incorrectly placed words,

smiles or gestures. this problem is universal, indeed internation-

al. Let’s try to understand each other, as individuals, and

as nations. Otherwise we will not survive. believe

me. whether or not we overcome our accent,

let us put it in the right place – on understanding!

we founded the akcent festival because of the urgent need to create a space for the confrontation of art that crosses the boundaries between artistic creation, social problems and politics. the series of workshops, meetings, street events, con-certs and theatre performances which made up last year’s pilot year of akcent have grown and received international praise, which further attests to the urgent need for this festival. Last year Hungar-ian director arpád schilling talked about changing the direction of his work. He said that he wants to be useful, that he wants to create “useful” theatre.

akcent’s goal is to present “useful” theatre that is based on real social events. this kind of “useful” theatre often happens in locations where theatre does not usu-ally take place. it gives rise to a spe-cific language that doesn’t need to be translated. it brings on stage people who are not necessarily professional artists, so that art can help them tell remarkable stories. it gives a voice to people who aren’t often heard. it creates a space for tolerance and mutual respect. akcent also features screenings, concerts, seminars, symposia, workshops, events in public spaces, screenings of documentary films, exhibits, chance meetings and nightly music in the bar. last week visual artist toybox and clients of the inventura as-sociation created an animated clip for this year’s festival. the inventura association works with mentally disabled people. as they worked one of the clients constantly talked about famous people he had met. “do you also want to be famous, Pepa?” asked toybox. Jaruška, who was drawing a portrait of a vietnamese man that no-body wanted to buy anything from, said: “but Pepa’s already famous!” i realized at that moment that fame is a relative term. you won’t see Pepa’s name in a movie or on tv, and nobody would think of him as being famous. but akcent wants to show that success can take different forms and that fame can also mean the admiration of just one person.

akcent means emphasis. the akcent fes-tival wants to emphasize the importance of art for the development of civil society. in addition to archa, the festival will take you to places in the vicinity of the theatre or further away that show signs of social and economic transformation, open or hidden social tensions, and conflict.

álními problémy a politikou. O naléha-

vosti této potřeby svědčí i fakt, že série

dílen, setkání pouličních akcí, koncertů

a divadelních představení, která tvořila

loňský „nultý“ ročník akcentu, se rozrostla

a získala mezinárodní ohlas. maďarský

režisér arpád schilling minulý rok hovořil

o změně směřování své tvorby. řekl, že

chce být užitečný. chce tvořit „užitečné“

divadlo.

Cílem akcentu je prezentovat „užitečné“

divadlo, které ze své podstaty vychází

z aktuálního společenského dění. takové

„užitečné“ divadlo se často odehrává na

místech, kde se divadlo obvykle nekoná.

není třeba překládat. Přivádí na scénu lidi,

kteří nemusejí být primárně umělci, aby jim

umění pomohlo vyprávět úžasné příběhy.

nou úctu. akcent jsou také filmy, koncerty,

semináře, symposia, dílny, akce ve veřej-

ném prostoru, projekce dokumentárních

filmů, výstavy, náhodná setkání a noční

hudba v baru. Minulý týden jsme společně

s výtvarnicí toybox a klienty sdružení

inventura vytvářeli animovanou znělku

k letošnímu festivalu. Sdružení inventura

pracuje s lidmi s mentálním postižením.

Jeden z klientů během práce neustále

vyprávěl historky o slavných lidech, se

kterými se setkal. „že ty chceš bejt taky

slavnej, Pepo?“, povídá toybox. Jaruška,

která právě kreslí portrét vietnamce,

u kterého nikdo nechce nakupovat, říká:

„ale Pepa přece už je slavnej!“ v té chvíli

jsem si uvědomila, jak je pojem sláva

relativní. Pepovo jméno nenajdete na titul-

cích výpravných filmů či televizních seriálů,

a přesto někomu může připadat slavný.

Jeho plán však končí dramatickým fiaskem. Představení testament proměňuje divadelní sál ve výslechovou místnost utopického procesu, jehož tématem je vyrovnání mezi generacemi. v hlavních rolích účinkují skuteční otcové protagonistů berlínského souboru She She Pop, kteří svým věkem vstupují do learových let a uvažují o svém odkazu. „po dobu dvanácti let skupina she she pop přetváří (mimo jiné) osobní témata do divadelního tvaru. ne / 20.00 palissimo company nabarvené ptáče – bastard námět a choreografie: pavel Zuštiak / tanečník a spoluautor: Jaro viňarský autorská hudba a interpretace: christian Frederickson bastard je první částí trilogie projektu newyorského choreografa slovenského původu Pavla zuštiaka, která se zabývá tématem vykořenění, proměny a „jinakosti“. inspirací pro sólové představení bastard byla kontroverzní novela Jerzyho Kosińského „nabarvené ptáče“ z roku 1956. v jedné z kapitol románu hrdina potká muže, který ve zlosti pomaluje ptáče barvou a vrátí je zpět do hnízda. Pomalované ptáče je považováno za vetřelce a je uklováno ostatními k smrti. nabarvené ptáče vypovídá o pocitech člověka, kterého svět považuje za vetřelce. He primarily focused on mapping the family life or work environment of people from neighbouring countries as well as people from places overseas. the entire cycle is part of a project called a Positive view of Foreigners in the Czech Republic, which has been arranged by the Charita čR organisation since May 2011. the project is co-financed by the european Union from the euro-pean integration Fund (eiF). archa theatre – foyer

thu / 15:00 protected territory documentary film, slovakia, 2010 / director: adam Hanuljak the documentary film Protected territory by director adam Hanuljak depicts a dream tour of the United States by theatre from the Passage. the actors of theatre from the Passage are living their dream and they guard it carefully. they received an opportunity to break out of the anonymity of institutions for the mentally disabled, because they were given a chance to demonstrate that the boundaries of their abilities actually went way beyond what they had been told until that time. theatre from the Passage are currently touring the United States again, but they could not be absent from this year’s akcent festival. thus they are presenting themselves via this documentary film. length 90 minutes. archa theatre – projection room

Word for Word is a method that stems from the principles of documen-tary theatre and is based on artists’ interviews with the representatives of a specific community and their subsequent stage formulation. at the same time, Word for Word is the name of a show that is a response to the racially motivated murders of Hungarian Roma. as a dramaturge, anna lengyel has collaborated with important directors such as tamas ascher and arpád Schil-ling. sat / 20:00 Kateřina Jungová, martina musi-lová & co. / the common body corpus vulgaris the authors’ show is the culmination of a two-year project called Having a body, being a body. at the start of the project the author’s asked a question: how do we actually perceive the human body and what is our relationship to it? the resultant project incorporates the experiences of people who live with various physical and social handicaps as well as people whose relationship to the body is influenced by their profession or age. these people are also the co-creators and stars of the performance. length 120 minutes. the show will be followed by a discussion with the authors, a banquet and a dancehall event. archa theatre – large auditorium

sun / 20:00 palissimo company / the painted bird / bastard idea and choreographer: pavel Zuštiak / dancer and co-author: Jaro viňarský / authorial music and interpretation: christian Frederickson bastard is the first part of a trilogy of projects by the new york based choreog-rapher of Slovak origin Pavel zuštiak, who pursues the themes of displacement, transformation, and “otherness.” the inspiration for the solo show bastard was the controversial novel the Painted bird from 1956 by Jerzy Kosiński. in one of the chapters of the novel, the protagonist meets a man who paints a bird while in a rage and returns it to the nest. the painted bird is considered to be an intruder and is pecked to death by the others. bastard talks about the feelings of a person whom the world considers to be an interloper. He is alone. He comes from another culture and he creates his own small world in a new setting. at one moment, ordinary people enter this world. length 60 minutes. archa theatre – large auditorium

rezidentky archa.lab petra tejnorová a veronika riedlbauchová v sezóně 2011 / 2012s jakým projektem jsi se hlásila do archa.lab?petra tejnorová: S dvoudílným diva-delním projektem, který se tematicky zaměřuje na rozpad lidského subjektu v mediálním věku, na hranou - umělou identitu, tekutou identitu. Projekt kombi-nuje principy devised theatre a live artu. opírá se o kolektivní tvorbu a vychází z předpokladu, že až samotný proces artikuluje téma a formuje výsledný tvar inscenace. z laboratorního hlediska projekt zkoumá hranice mezi hercem a performerem, divadlem a skutečným životem. Hledá nové způsoby zapojení publika a strategie zasažení a ovlivnění veřejného života. Co se týká vyhláše-ného tématu „váš příběh mě zajímá!“, bychom se rádi v tomto ohledu zaměřili spíše na způsoby zneužívání zmiňované autenticity a s tím související principy hrané identity, hrané autenticity, kterou nám tv pořady, reality show servírují prakticky denně. být anebo hrát roli? v kultu jedinečnosti a odlišnosti… veronika riedlbauchová: náš projekt je veden jako experiment pohybující se na pomezí divadla a sociálního dokumen-tu. zadané téma nás inspirovalo k hle-dání nápisů, písemných a jiných vzkazů lidí v nejrůznějších veřejných prostorech Prahy, které nás budou provokovat k otázce, jací jedinci a jaké příběhy se za těmito jednotlivými vzkazy skrývají. z těchto fragmentů chceme na jevišti vytvořit jakousi urbanistickou poezii a objevovat možnosti a způsoby, jak propojit reálný svět se světem divadelní fikce.

bereš rezidenci jako přímou výzvu k vy-tvoření inscenace či jako možnost a čas k vyzkoušení nových věcí?petra tejnorová: Jelikož jsem ihned po škole „nezalezla“ do repertoárového divadla a nenechala se zaškatulkovat „postmoderním“ nebo jiným pojmem, znamenalo to jít vlastní cestou, vybrat si proces neustálého hledání a v nepo-slední řadě přijímat výzvy. Rezidence mi tím pádem dává možnost projekt nechat vzniknout v divadelním  prostoru, který má slova jako výzkum – laboratoř už ve svém profilu. v první fázi by mělo jít především o rozví-jení a aplikaci metod vycházejících z in-spiračních zdrojů a hledání vlastní cesty. tato fáze bude prezentována v rámci archa.labu formou work in progress. vznikne tedy nedokončený scénický tvar. v druhé fázi chceme směřovat k pevnému tvaru, k více fixnímu scénické-mu tvaru, jehož premiéra proběhne na divadelní Floře olomouc 2012.

veronika riedlbauchová: vlastně tak trochu obojí. Každé hledání nových cest vyjádření, každý experiment a výzkum jsou podle mého názoru funkčnější, smě-řují-li k určitému tvaru. v tomto ohledu mi jako ideální přijde work in progress. Rozhovor vedl Lukáš Jiřička

call for participants in the painted bird / bastard project 17.–19. 11. 2011 the archa theatre and palissimo artist group are looking for people interested in participating in the painted bird / bastard project www.thepaintedbird.org.

it’s a solo performance by Slovak dancer Jaroslav viňarský accompanied by the live music of Christian Frederickson. We are looking for volunteers, either professionals or amateurs, who will be actively involved in the performance, which will take place on 20.11.2011 at 20:00 in the archa theatre as part of the akcent Festival. Participants must take a three-day dance workshop led by the Palissimo Company (Palo zuštiak and Jaroslav viňarský). applicants will be sent more detailed information.

the 2011 /  2012 residents of the archa.lab petra tejnorová and veronika riedlbauchováwhat project did you submit for your application to the archa.lab? petra tejnorová: i submitted a two-part theatre project whose theme focuses on the collapse of human subjects in the media age, on false identity, fluid identity. the project combines principles of devised theatre and live art. it’s based on collective creation and comes out of the idea that the process itself articulates the theme and contributes to the resulting form of the production. From an experimental point of view, the project investigates the borders between actor and performer, theatre and real life. it looks for new ways to involve the audience and strategies for affecting and influencing public life. in terms of the theme of “We want to know your story!”, we would like to focus more on ways of misusing authenticity and the related idea of false identity, false reality, which tv shows and reality shows serve us practically daily. to be or to play a role? in the cult of uniqueness and difference… veronika riedlbauchová: our project is conducted like an experiment that operates in the nether region between theatre and social documentary. the assigned theme inspired us to look for inscriptions, written and other messages from people in the most diverse parts of Prague, which provoke us to ask: what individuals and what stories are hidden behind these messages? From these fragments we want to create a kind of urban poetry on stage and discover opportunities and ways to connect the real world with the world of theatrical fiction.

Do you see the residence as a direct call to create a production or as an opportunity and time to try out new things? petra tejnorová: Since right after finishing school i didn’t get stuck in a repertory theatre and didn’t let myself get characterized as “postmodern” or some other label, it meant finding my own road, choosing a process of constant searching and, last but not least, responding to calls. the residence gives the project the chance to develop in a theatre space that already has words like research and laboratory in its profile. in the first phase it should primarily involve development and application of methods coming out of sources of inspiration and looking for your own road. these phases will be presented as part of the archa.lab in the form of a work in progress. an unfinished stage form will be created during this phase. in the second phase, we want to head in the direction of a set form, to a more fixed scenic form, the premiere of which will take place at the theatre Flora olomouc 2012. veronika riedlbauchová: a bit of both, actually. in my opinion, any search for new means of expression, and all experiment and research is more useful if it leads to a definite form. From this standpoint it seems to me that the ideal is work in progress. interview by lukáš Jiřička

představení radical wrong je určeno pro dospívající mládež a účinkují

v něm mladí lidé. Jeden z nich dokonce vykřikuje, že wim vandekeybus

je mrtev. tvé jméno je na programu přeškrtnuto. sám jsi vyhlásil, že jsi to

představení nerežíroval. Jak to tedy doopravdy je?Když pracuješ s mladými lidmi a děláš představení pro jejich vrstevníky,

musíš jim dát šanci se vyjádřit. Mladí lidé se vymezují vůči autoritám,

a pokud jsem chtěl, aby představení věřili, nemohl jsem je v ničem ome-

zovat. Je to jejich představení, a díky tomu mu dávají obrovskou energii.

dával jsem jim režijní instrukce ale zároveň jsem jim řekl: to vše můžete

použít proti mně. Hrál jsem roli člověka, který je příliš starý na to, aby ho

vzali mezi sebe, k čemuž jsem se musel trochu nutit, protože se mentálně

cítím pořád mladý. takže, ať si každý vybere.představení vzniklo jen krátký čas před bouřemi mládeže v londýně.

vidíš v tom nějakou spojitost? Jen do určité míry. i v našem představení se odráží zloba mladé gene-

race a násilí je v něm také přítomné. tanečníci dělají věci na pokraji

sebezničení, ale nevyhýbáme se i klidným pasážím plným citu. Můžeme

však také nacházet jiné souvislosti. v létě se například konal obrovský

hudební festival v Hasseltu, kde byl také můj syn. najednou přišla obrov-

ská průtrž, vítr a déšť strhl pódium a lámal stromy. zahynulo tam několik

lidí. Ukazuje to, že příroda je stále ještě silnější než emoce mladých.předchozí představení monkey sandwich, které jsme v arše uvedli

minulý rok, velice rozdělilo publikum. kritika a velká část publika jej

přijala s nadšením, ale našli se i takoví, kteří na mě křičeli po předsta-

vení, že už k nám nikdy nepřijdou. Jak je to s radical wrong?

Musím říct, že mě těší, když diváci vyjádří radikální názory. není na tom

nic špatného, když představení pobouří publikum. Mladé publikum

přijímá představení Radical Wrong jako svou vlastní výpověď, a tak

doufám, že v Praze přijdou především mladí. Představení je plné ener-

gie soustředěné do krátkých sekvencí. vyžaduje intenzivní, ale krátké

soustředění, což myslím mladým vyhovuje. zároveň je zábavné.a co starší? můžou taky přijít?ti si určitě taky najdou svoje. Možná si řeknou, to je hrozné, čím ta mládež

dnes žije, ale možná v představení poznají sami sebe. vždyť přece taky

byli mladí. nakonec hudba, kterou v představení používám, je hudba

osmdesátých let – Public image limited nebo beastie boys, kterou na-

opak mladí lidé skoro vůbec neznají. nedávno jsme hráli v Moens, kde

v publiku seděli jenom starší lidé. říkal jsem si, bože, jak tohle dopadne?

a dopadlo to skvěle. byli nadšeni. zjistili jsme, že představení má fanyn-

ky mezi ženami kolem padesátky. Je totiž svým způsobem sexy. náš rozhovor se odehrává v době, kdy sedíš na letišti a čekáš na

letadlo do benátek. bude tam uveden film monkey sandwich. nakolik

se verze, kterou v benátkách uvedete, liší od filmu, který byl součástí

divadelního představení? ve filmové verzi jsme posílili příběh hlavní postavy, Jerryho. Celý film

jsme nově přestříhali. Protože divadelní verze počítala s diváky, kteří

zároveň pozorují akci na scéně, měla jiné tempo než film uváděný v bio-

grafu. Pro filmovou distribuci jsme jej taky asi o 20 minut zkrátili. Film byl

vybrán do sekce Horizonty benátského festivalu. toho si velice vážím,

protože v ní jsou uváděny filmy, které podle organizátorů předbíhají

svou dobu. Mimochodem, s Jerry Killickem, hercem hlavní postavy filmu, připravuje-

me na červen příštího roku nové představení. Myslíme při tom na archu.

radical wrong is intended for adolescents and is performed by young

people. One of the performers even yells out that wim vandekeybus

is dead. your name is crossed out on the program. you’ve even stated

that you’re not really the director. is that true?

When you work with young people and make a performance for their

peers you’ve got to give them the chance to express themselves. young

people don’t respond well to authority, so if i wanted them to believe in

the performance, i couldn’t limit them in any way. it’s their performance,

which is why they put so much energy into it. i gave them direction, but at

the same time i told them: you can use all of that against me. i played the

role of someone who’s too old to be one of them, which i had to force

myself to do a little, because mentally i still feel young. So, let everyone

choose for himself.

the performance was created just a short time before the youth riots in

London. Do you see a connection?

only to a certain extent. our performance does reflect the anger of

the young generation and violence is also present. the dancers do

things that are on the edge of self-destruction, but we’ve also got calm

passages full of feeling. but we can find other connections too. in the

summer, for example, my son attended a huge music festival in Hasselt.

Suddenly there was a huge downpour, wind and rain tore up the stage

and toppled trees. Several people were killed. it shows that nature is

still stronger than young people’s emotions.

your previous performance, monkey sandwich, which we presented

at archa last year, sharply divided audiences. the critics and a large

part of the public loved it, but there were also people who yelled at

me after the performance that they would never come to our theatre

again. what’s the reaction been like to radical wrong?

Frankly, i’m happy when audiences express radical opinions. the-

re’s nothing wrong when a performance shocks the audience. young

audiences see Radical Wrong as their own testimony and so i hope

that in Prague the audience will mostly be made up of young people.

the performance is full of energy concentrated in short sequences. it re-

quires intense, but brief concentration, which i think suits young people.

it’s also entertaining.

what about older audiences? can they come too?

they’ll definitely also find something in it. Maybe they’ll say that it’s te-

rrible what young people are like today, but maybe they’ll recognize

themselves in the performance. i mean, they were young once too. and

the music that we use in the performance is music from the 1980s, like Pub-

lic image limited or the beastie boys, which young people hardly know

at all. Recently we played in Moens, where the audience was basically

older people. i thought to myself, oh God, how will this go? but it was

great. they loved it! We discovered that the performance was really

popular among women in their fifties, which in a way is kind of sexy.

we’re doing this interview in an airport while you wait for a flight to

How much does the film that you’ll be showing in venice differ from the

film that was part of the theatrical performance?

in the film version we strengthened the story of the main character, Jerry.

We re-edited the whole film. Since the theatre version counted on an

audience that is at the same time also watching what’s happening on

stage, it had a different tempo from the film presented in the cinema. For

the film distribution we also shortened it by about twenty minutes. the

film was selected for the Horizons section of the venice festival, which

i’m really proud of, because it’s for films that the organizers consider

ahead of their time.

by the way, i’m preparing a new performance for June of next year with

Jerry Killick, who plays the protagonist in the film. We’re thinking about

a vedoucí věhlasného souboru ultima vez. vandekeybus založil soubor ultima vez

v roce 1986 během pobytu ve španělsku. na mezinárodní scénu vstoupil s představe-

ním what the body Does not remember. vandekeybusova tvorba je charakteristická

radikálním pohybovým divadlem, jehož hnacím motorem je konflikt, síla, instinkt,

„imaginární katastrofa“ a rozpor mezi přitažlivostí a odtažitostí. vandekeybus mis-

trovsky používá text i autorskou hudbu. pro ultimu vez skládali avantgardní hudebníci

jako například David byrne, marc ribot, charo calvo, eavesdropper nebo David

eugene edwards ze 16 Horse power či skupina woven Hand.

ultima vez se českým divákům poprvé představila v Divadle archa v roce 1995 pro-

jektem mountains made of barking. Od té doby mají diváci archy možnost sledovat

tvorbu jednoho z nejvýznamnějších světových choreografů pravidelně. z tvorby wima

vendekeybuse archa dosud uvedla what the body Does not remember (1997), in spite

of wishing and wanting (2000), scratching the inner fields (2002), blush (2003), spiegel

(2006), nieuwzwart (2009) a monkey sandwich (2010).
