changedtheminawaytomakethemachinework.Frequencyandcombinationsoflettershadtobeconsideredtopreventkeyshittingeachother.Thetypewriterwarswerepoweredbytypingcompetitions,wheretypistswouldbattleitouttoachieve
thehighestwordcounts.Notsurprisingly,typewouldhiteachotherandstick.SoSholes,itissaid,reorganizedtheletterson
hismachineinordertokeepspeedsdown.In1873,QwertywasadoptedbyRemington,famousfor itsarmsandsewingmachinesaswellas
itstypewriters,anditbecameadoptedasthebasisnotonlyforEnglishbutthemajorityofEuropeanlanguagesaswell.Intheearly1930s,timeandmotionexpertAugustDvorakmadeQwertylessimportantbyproducing
someempiricalevidenceprovingthatit’snotthebestsystem.Asanalternative,heproducedanergonomicallydesignedkeyboardwhichcouldhavemeanttheend
ofQwerty.Dvorakusersreportedfaster,moreaccuratetypingandfewerkeyshittingeachother.Butitwastoolate.JustasACbeatDC,theaudiocassettebeat8-trackandVHSbeatBetamax,Qwertywontheformatwar.Typewriterswiththefamiliar layoutwerealreadyused inofficesaroundtheworld.WithQwerty
camestandardizationandcompatibility.And,althoughtheremaybemoreefficientkeyboards,theseofferonlyverysmallimprovements.Ifusersaretrulylookingforspeedandaccuracy,theycouldconsiderstenotypesusedbystenographers
incourtrooms.Thesemachineshave22keysandarecapableoftypingatthespeedofspeech,around180wordsperminute,orthreewordseverysecond.
