OLW MASSES HAVE DOUBLED IN JULY!

Father Arthur and the Church Reopening Team are

excited to announce that Our Lady of the Wayside

Mass offerings have doubled beginning this weekend.

"The Reopening Team met to review compliance and

success of the 9:30 and 11:30 masses and determined

that we are now in a ready position to double our

Mass offerings," said Fr. Arthur. "Our goal from the

beginning was to offer Mass and Holy Communion to

as many parishioners as was safely possible. We

started conservatively, offering two Sunday Masses to

50 parishioners each. We learned from this process,

made adjustments and increased attendance to 125

parishioners at each Mass last week. And based on

continued success of this roll-out process, we are now

prepared to add 5:00 pm Saturday Vigil Mass and a

6:00 pm Sunday Mass to the 9:30/11:30 am Sunday

lineup, starting in July," added Father.

Preregistration for Mass attendance is mandatory

and is available starting at 7:00 am the Friday preced-

ing each Saturday or Sunday Mass. Preregister online

here: https://bit.ly/37RmjR8. If you require assistance

registering, please contact Kathy Freiburger in the

parish office at (847) 253-5353.

Face masks must be worn at all Masses throughout

the entire time you are in the building. Please also

bring hand sanitizer if you have it.

Those unable or not quite ready to return to live Mass,

or those considered to be 'most vulnerable,' are en-

couraged to attend Mass virtually. Streaming Mass

continues to be offered live on OLW's Facebook page

at 5:00 pm each Saturday and will also be available

on the parish website shortly after the conclusion of

live-streaming Mass. Dispensation is still offered by

the Archdiocese.

DUE TO THE NATIONAL HOLIDAY THERE IS AN ABBREVIATED BULLETIN THIS WEEKEND

It is available on the website only with no hardcopy in

the parish office.

A full bulletin will return on July 12.

Guidelines for reopening the schools and classes were issued by the state of Illinois this past week. The guide- lines were provided to the media at the same time as schools received them. As such, we have just begun reading through them. The Chicago Archdiocese is currently re-viewing the new state guidelines as they relate to their own plans. They have indicated they will be providing specific details to school administrators in the next 2-3 weeks. The Office of Catholic Schools has been working on its own re-opening plan for several weeks. We continue to wait for the details needed to finalize a specific plan for OLW. At that time, we will be able to finalize plans for REP and commu-nicate them to all our families.

REGISTRATION

For the Religious Education Program, Grades

1-8, For Year 2020-2021

As we prepare classes for the new Religious Education year and develop safe plans under state guidelines for COVID, we encourage all families to complete the registration packets found on the parish website un-der Education. Receiving all the required paperwork makes finalizing classroom placement and obtaining books, supplies and most importantly, catechists, more efficient. If you have any questions please call the Office at 847-398-5011.

CYCLES OF FAITH

14th Sunday in Ordinary Time

There’s a Christian drama called Baggage. In the course

of this monologue, the main character carries more and

more (empty) luggage, slings, and backpacks, explaining

how, through this and that scene, he collects baggage.

You can see the actor start to be weighed down by what

he’s carrying, but it’s so understandable why he does it:

we all do the same. He tries unsuccessfully to unload

that baggage onto others, but to no avail. In the climax of

the script, the actor drops all of the bags with a huge sigh

of relief. This image, while slightly kitschy, can be a

helpful image for us as we consider this all too familiar

Gospel text.

A myriad of scenarios can explain the weight that we

hold deep within: it can be the confusion and anxiety

about the current events we see on the news and social

media; it can be discouragement about being furloughed;

it can be the frustration from our children making poor

life choices; it can be the shame from our secret, hidden

addictive behaviors; it can be a powerlessness in con-

fronting a tense relationship with a family member; it

can be the regret we bear for failures or unresolved con-

flict from our past. The older we get it seems as though

the more baggage we tend to collect. I think that’s nor-

mal, but I also think that we have yet to learn how to let

the baggage go … just like the actor in the skit.

So, when Jesus says, “Come to me … I will give you

rest,” I learned to take him at his word. I took a leap of

faith and laid my heart bare that morning … and the rest

that Jesus talks about was not threatening to me; it was

actually inviting. The burdens that I was carrying … he

took them off my shoulders and emptied them on his

cross. He replaced my burdens with the yoke of disciple-

ship; in essence he said to me, “You’ve tried it your way;

now try mine … it will work out better for you in the

long run.” He has been true to his word ever since.

Our baggage has become our comfort and definition. We

don’t experience what Jesus promised because we fear,

or we doubt. But Jesus is patient as he is persistent. The

invitation will always be there. Grace is always available

to us … but it is “hidden” (cf v 26) because we have hid-

den our faults, thinking that Jesus isn’t “God enough” to

know about them, let alone to forgive us for them. So,

we go on living our lives of quiet desperation, hoping for

relief, lacking the gumption to grasp for it. Weighted

down, we lose our balance often, blaming this person or

that scenario. We’d like to “rejoice heartily,” but we

think erroneously we are condemned to “labor and bur-

dens.” But just maybe, right before inconsolable despair

envelops us when faced with our mountains of impossi-

bilities, we can utter seven words — if even sheepishly

— “I can’t anymore; you can; please do.”

Then just watch what Jesus will do!
