This is specially designed for promoting HP-LEDs. Cree is Arrow Asia's focus LED line for the brightest white color HP-LEDs when driving @350mA or higher. The high power LED series from Cree include XML, industry's highest performance with single die, XPC/XPE/XPG LED, XRE/XRC, lighting class MX and ML series and multiple chip LED MCE, MPL and MTG LED.

Reduce LED-to-LED color variation to within a 2-step MacAdam ellipse, 94% smaller than the total area of the corresponding ANSI C78.377 color region.

Boost Converters can be designed to drive more than 1 HP XPE/XPG LED in series, and multi-chip MCE LED with chip connected in series from a 9V battery or 6xAA size battery pack. All the converters can provide a simpler and high current output to drive high-power LEDs in voltage step-up application. Some controllers can access very low input voltage and oscillate at high frequency which reduce size of LED driver, those features fit for size limited battery powered lighting application such as in torch or headlamp. Constant current driven features is recommended for maintain constant lumen and color temp output throughout LED's life.

Middle Voltage LED drivers accept a wider input voltage (12V to 36V) and with high current output. These drivers can drive high power/high brightness LED by serial or matrix. Solution Guide

High voltage low power LED driver can connect to universal off-line input (85V to 265V AC input) directly. These drivers can provide up to 1A driving depends on designer application. Most for the drivers have isolated/non-isolated configuration. For indoor lighting application, some of the LED drivers controllers can be compatible with Triac dimmers and well fitted with MCE and MPL LED. With proper design, those controllers can perform very high efficiency in compact size to fit various lighting fixture form factor.

High voltage, high power LED driver can connect to universal off-line input (85V to 265V AC input) directly and able to deliver over a hundred watt of electrical power. These drivers can provide very high output current and voltage and also energy efficient. Meanwhile, these controllers and solutions also implement various protection features makes the driver more reliable. The following controllers simplified designs, more cost effective and suit application in streetlight and outdoor illumination application.

This is specially designed for IRC Anotherm heat sink. IRC Anotherm is the best commercial material known to Arrow, to pass through heat from LED to ambient temperature. Since these heat sink are mostly customized, each request will be taken as a special handling deal. Its best thermal conductivity comes from the fact that LED (XPE thermal resistance, junction to solder point, typical 9°C/W) sit on top of IRC Anotherm circuitry (K=27w/m-‘K) which passes the LED heat directly onto the Aluminum (K=201w/m-‘K) immediately below it. There is no need of any heat gel which K value is lower than the Anotherm, in between the MCPCB/Anotherm and the heat sink below (aluminium with fin).

Due to the high current needed to drive the high-brightness LEDs, thermal management becomes increasingly important especially when the number of LED count becomes increasing. In LED lighting design, thermal management becomes one of the most challenging area. As in order to extend LED life for maximizing the lighting fixture reliability. It is always necessary to estimate the LED chip junction temperature in design stage. In the following, the method of LED thermal management as well as junction temperature estimation will be introduced.

The Proper Way to Measure LED Solder Point Temperature: 一种可行的方法是去测量LED焊点的温度：

Place the temperature probe or thermal couple just right next to the LED package.把温度探针或者热偶放到LED封装边的焊点上。

Extended solder pad for temperature measurement into the MCPCB.增大焊盘面积去测量MCPCB的温度。

Application Example: Estimating Junction Temperature in XRE LEDCalculating the junction temperature from measuring the solder point temperature: Assuming an Xlamp LED driving at 350mA at 3.3V, the measured solder point temperature is 51.2°C, the junction temperature can be estimated as:

Total LED power (LED总功率) = 3.3V x 350mA = 1.155W

To estimate the junction temperature, designer should consider the total thermal resistance from ambient to junction, which include the thermal resistance from junction to solder point, solder point to heatsink and heatsink to ambient.

Most of the country has implemented lighting design standard for street lamp. In China, the street lamp should be designed base on the national standard CJJ45-2006, which is a Chinese standard of lighting design in urban road. It governs the Luminance, Illuminance, Uniformity, threshold increment as well as surround ratio on various kind of road lane. Meanwhile, this standard also govern the street lamp luminaires efficiency, lumen maintenance as well as life time in real application.

The LM3450 is a power factor controller (PFC) with separate phase dimming decoder. The PFC regulates an accurate output voltage while maintaining excellent power factor at the input. The phase dimming decoder interprets the phase angle and remaps it to a 500Hz PWM output. This combination of features is ideal for implementing a dimmable off-line LED driver for 10-100W loads.

The LM3464 is a 4-channel high voltage current regulator that provides a simple solution for LED lighting applications. The LM3464 provides four individual current regulator channels and works in conjunction with external N-channel MOSFETs and sense resistors to give accurate driving current for every LED string. Additionally, the Dynamic Headroom Control (DHC) output can be interfaced to the external power supply to adjust the LED supply voltage to the lowest level that is adequate to maintain all the string currents in regulation, yielding the optimal overall efficiency.

This application presents an AC/DC LED driver solution developed by NXP SSL2101. The SSL2101 is a Switched Mode Power Supply (SMPS) controller IC that operates directly from rectified mains and also in combination with a phase cut dimmer. It is designed to drive LED devices. SSL2101 includes a high-voltage power switch and a circuit to allow start-up directly from the rectified mains voltage. Furthermore the device includes high-voltage circuitry to supply the phase cut dimmer. Target application include indoor lighting, interior lighting as well as bulb replacement/retrofit lighting.

The HVLED805 is a HV primary switcher intended for operating from the AC mains with minimum parts to provide an efficient, compact and cost effective solution for LED driving. It combines a high-performance low-voltage PWM controller chip and an 800V, avalanche-rugged power MOSFET in the same package.HVLED805 controller IC specifically designed for ZVS (zero voltage switching) fly-back LED drivers, with constant output current (CC) regulation using primary sensing feedback. This eliminates the need for the opto-coupler, the secondary voltage reference, as well as the current sense and still maintaining a good LED current accuracy. Moreover it guarantees a safe operation when short circuit of one or more LEDs occurs.

The device is an off-line converter with an 800V rugged power section, a PWM control, double levels of overcurrent protection, overvoltage and overload protections, hysteretic thermal protection, softstart and safe auto-restart after any fault condition removal. Burst mode operation and offers very low consumption helps to meet the standby energy saving regulations. The quasi resonant feature reduces EMI filter cost. Brown-out and brown-in function protects the switch mode power supply when the rectified input voltage level is below the normal minimum level specified for the system.The high voltage start-up circuit is embedded in the device.

Richtek — MR16/AR111 Solutions with RT8470 Buck, RT8450 Boost/Buck-Boost and Two Stage Solutions with RT8465立錡科技 — MR16/AR111 方案，RT8470 降压，RT8450 升压/升降压，以及 RT8465 两级式方案

1. BUCK：BUCK has the lowest cost and the smallest PCB. It may also has the highest efficiency. The ET compatibility is reasonable after the improvement of new circuit design. One significant drawback is the output current may drop due to the input voltage drop. This become worse when the test condition include input 90V to a 110V ET or input 200V to a 220V ET. This will reduce the output luminance.

2. BOOST：The cost and PCB size of BOOST will be higher than BUCK. The efficiency will also be lower than BUCK but no big difference. The LED current will be consistent even the input voltage drop. This solution also offer a better ET compatibility than buck topology.

3. BUCK-BOOST：BUCK-BOOST need higher cost and larger PCB. The efficiency will also be lower. Suggest not to have LED output voltage between 10.5V~18V to avoid using this topology.

4. RT8465 Two Stage Solution：This topology has very good ET compatibility and also very good reliability due to smaller inrush current. But the PCB size will be difficult to fit into a regular MR16. It is good for higher power solution that can offer more space for driver board.

This application note present Richtek solutions for MR16 based on different LED connection and output power. For Vout<10.5V, RT8470 buck is recommended. For Vout>18V, RT8450 boost is recommended. RT8450 buck-boost also work well with wide Vout range. The two stage solutions with RT8465 is a big improvement on MR16/AR111 design. The low voltage PFC simulates the performance of a real halogen bulb and let the electronic transformer(ET) works in normal mode. This reduces the inrush current on current MR16 design to improve the reliability. It also require smaller E-cap especially for high power application (Pout>7W), and make the ET compatibility become perfect.

本应用手册介绍立科技的MR16/AR111设计方案。对於输出电压在10.5V以下的应用，建议使用RT8470降压方案。输出电压在18V以上的，建议使用RT8450升压，而RT8450升降压的方案亦适用於极大的输出电压范围。RT8465的两级式方案是MR16/AR111的一大进步。利用低压PFC来模拟传统卤素灯，让电子变压器在正常模式下工作。此方案可以降低目前MR16方案中普遍存在的突波电流问题，以改善产品可靠性。使用较小的电解电容，特别是高功率(Pout>7W)的项目。同时大大的改进了电子变压器的兼容性。

降压方案有最低的成本跟最小的PCB。同时也有可能是所有方案里效率最高的。电子变压器在线路改善後也提高到了合理的程度。此方案最大的缺点在於当输入电压过低时，输出电流会下降，特别是当测试规格包括将110V的ET输入90V或是220VET输入200V。这会导致输出亮度下降。

升压方案需要比较降压稍高的成本跟较大的PCB。效率也会稍微低一点。但是尽管在输入电压下降时，仍能维持很好的输出一致性。这方案同时有较好的电子变压器兼容性。

升降压结构需要较高的成本及较大的PCB，效率也会比较低，建议尽量不要选择LED输出电压落在10.5V~18V之间以避免使用到升降压结构。

RT8465的两级式结构有很好的电子变压器兼容性以及因为较低的突波电

流带来较高的可靠性，但是因为整体方案需要较大的PCB，比较适合输出功率较高，灯体较大的案子。

1. Wire rod length recommendation: please keep the AC input wire long enough for convenient installation, and keep the wire rod ideally less than 5cm between the LED base board and the power supply output terminal.

This solderless termination technique facilitates easy integration of the LED into the end customer’s lighting fixtures with simple screw-down installation. Multiple versions are offered to provide application flexibility. To further enhance functionality to the fixture manufacturer, the socket also features integral, robust, snap attachment of LEDIL Tyra series reflector optics.
