portere(나르다)와 folium(잎사귀)가 합쳐져 공문서나 인쇄물

Modern day society time could in some ways be considered an era of limitless competition or an every-man-for-himself arena. A portfolio is used as a tool to evaluate one’s ability and potential in applying for a job, applying for school, or doing business. During the Renaissance, artists used portfolios to showcase their painting samples to prospective clients. Portfolios are equally, if not more, important in the present day as artists in all disciplines use portfolios to demonstrate their achievements and qualifications. The word “portfolio” originated from the Italian word ‘portafoglio’ which means carrying documents or printed materials. ‘Portafogio’ is a combination of the Latin words ‘portere’ (carry) and ‘folium’ (leaf). The typical artist’s portfolio, prior to the 1990’s, was a plain black book or a large binder. The traditional means of producing a portfolio by attaching printed material to a board, developing images on acetate film or lining film slides film in a roll, all evolved into digital format in 1990’s. Now, in the era of Memedia (one-person media), a digital portfolio format has become ubiquitous through the use of CDs, DVDs, websites, social networks, and the internet.

To the artist, a portfolio is a vast array of documentaries that reflects one’s consciousness, values, and aesthetic in a logical sequence. A portfolio’s arrangement can vary depending on its purposes and its expected audience. Because a portfolio is required in fine art, fashion, architecture, and design (where the individual’s ability and sensitivity are one of the most important qualifications), the artist must create a compressed portfolio which can effectively convey his/her professional skill. Although many people outside of the creative professions recognize the necessity and importance of the portfolio, there are only a few types of guidebooks currently available on the market thus making it challenging to find an inventive way to create a portfolio. It is not just the production method that makes a portfolio attractive. The portfolio could be an artist’s diary, an imaginative novel, or a rhythmic poem that imprints the artist’s name and characteristics in the viewer’s mind as a vehicle to facilitate a better understanding of the concept and form of the artist’s work.

A kind of a sourcebook, including filing note, memo, sketch, study, and experiment

reports, that shows all the skills and methods that benefit the trial work.

The Savina Museum of Contemporary Art’s first exhibition of 2013, <Artist’s Portfolio>, examines the concept, meaning, and form of the portfolio. This exhibition includes eight artists who are active in the field of fine art and design and encourages them to utilize the exhibition space to show works as if they were their own portfolios. The exhibition will serve to convey the philosophy, working process, and transition of the artists’ works. Each artist’s characteristics and narratives will be arranged in completely unique and never-before-seen form. The exhibition will highlight the overall theme of each artist’s work in a way that assists audiences in better understanding them. There will be an archive showcasing the portfolio making processes of forty-six participating artists from domestic and international artist residency programs.

The portfolios in this exhibition include: 1) a timeline format that shows artist’s works chronologically, 2) a drill-down focusing on an artist’s specific series of works, and 3) a display of drawings and experiments that synthetically showcase the creation process and motivations behind the works. The participating artists are described below:

Kang, Hong Gu’s portfolio reveals the evolution of his work leading up to the finished product that we see in the complete works of this exhibit. Kang’s notes, sketch photos, and drawings are shown with test shot images. They are the primary materials that represent the foundation of his work. Kang presents, as a wall mounted display, the process of personal portfolio1 creation through meticulous documentation of his artistic conceptualization. By examining this portfolio, which contains his accumulated works from 1995 to the present, we can see the evolution in his works as a whole.

Kim, Jong Gu uses steel powder as his primary artistic vehicle and has attempted to create various genres with it. In this exhibition, Kim gathers works representative of each period in one place and arranges them in a way that showcases a broad spectrum at a glance. He has installed his works in a timeline format which provides an opportunity to think about the continuity of his work as it has changed and evolved over time. It shows development and flow in his work with his primary medium, steel powder that was created as a byproduct of carving steel.

Mioon (Kim, Minsun and Choi, Moonsun) is a media artist group that has been working on the visual translation on the crowd and individual. In this exhibition, they suggest a new form of portfolio. They have created miniatures of works from past ten years and put them in boxes in different sizes. The boxes are carefully arranged to give prominence to each artist’s characteristics. The exhibited work’s arrangement makes it appear as if the sum total of all the works is actually one, single, unified work. Thus, Mioon presents a creative portfolio using the archiving concept.

Won, Seong Won has created a collector’s portfolio. Won’s portfolio, contained in a box, is made to realize the ‘Seven Years Old’ series as the telling of a story. With special consideration for the distinct characteristics of photography (a fixed image exposed with the use of certain chemicals), Won has created an exemplary portfolio format composed of acid-free paper (used in matte backgrounds) and boxes that were originally used to protect photographs. The use of these elements brings out the true nature of the medium.

Noh, Seokmi presents artwork that holds a close relationship with her daily life. All the small and big happenings in daily life are transformed to various forms including paintings, illustration, drawings, books, dolls (the “Small People” installation), publications, and objects. In this exhibition, Noh has gathered images of previous works, framed them in their original size, and knitted chair covers and portraits in their likeness.

Yoo, Hyun Mi explores various genres: painting, sculpture, photography, and video. She has created a portfolio that showcases the process of artwork creation synthetically. Yu’s project for this exhibition is based on a fictitious scenario in which she breaks into the museum and transforms its interior into a painting. She has painted lighting fixtures, stairs, paintings, and various objects throughout the museum. The audience can fully experience her painting, sculpture, photography, and video.

A portfolio is organically connected with its own end result: typography and layout. The design duo Sulki and Min present their experimental design concept and philosophy in a way that breaks out of traditional portfolio creation techniques.

Sulki and Min are an internationally acclaimed graphic design duo that has been invited to the BMW Guggenheim Lab project. In this exhibition, they present a video work that describes the process of deconstructing and reconstructing their previous work images in order to create a brand new image. This video transforms their existing works and is the best way to present their visualization and interpretation of “coincidence” and “tension” in a tangible form.

Jindalae and Park, Woo Hyuk’s portfolio presents a single, unified view of concepts from their previous works. They have been working on graphic design, installation, publication, and editing. In this exhibition, they have created a symbolic representation of typography as a gigantic universe by juxtaposing symbols, shapes, and codes from their previous works as if they were planets. They also published a newspaper article describing the arrangement and meaning of the words and shapes as well as the overall concept and characteristic which they aim to achieve.

The participating artists’ portfolios are not meant to be merely a collection of their works. They freely experimented with the format of the portfolio to exhibit their concepts in a way that reflects the distinct characteristics of the genre they choose. Participating artists use this exhibition as an opportunity to define the meaning of the portfolio and explore new ways to create a portfolio, and, in the process, consider new ideas that could potentially be incorporated into their work. We hope that this exhibition functions as a platform to understand each artist’s aesthetic in depth and as a friendly communication tool with which general audiences can approach contemporary art. Through the unique portfolios of forty-six international artists in the Archive Lounge, audiences can experience various methods, themes, and narratives of contemporary art and visualize the new form of the portfolio in the era of Memidea.

1 Please tell us about the Portfolio works which will be on exhibition at the Savina Museum. What was your main focus?

I would like to exhibit the concept of a failed work and the process of how a work would end up that way.

2 Is there any special intention about showing the undisclosed images, which were used as test shots, at the forefront of the portfolio during the production of this exhibition?

There isn’t any specific purpose in doing this. The test images are like raw materials of the work, and are different from the completed work which is typically shown in a portfolio. I thought that showing those would be interesting. Moreover, I no longer feel that it is embarrassing to show a failed work. I guess I have become more presumptuous and brazen.

3 In the solo exhibition <Disappearing-The Record about Eunpyung New Town> (2009), you said that your photograph is ‘a record but not intended to record.’ To Kang, Hong-Goo, what does the record mean?

Literally, it is something that I didn’t intend to create but was formed as a result of my actions. I think it is somewhat inevitable because I didn’t intend to make a record or documentary but it became one in then end. Of course, I can’t say that it is an entirely objective work.

대단하세요!(You are so brave!)’

1 Please tell us about the Portfolio works which will be on exhibition at the Savina Museum. What was your main focus?

I sorted the previous works according to the present standard. Then, I listed them in the same format-- printed material. I felt that by tying up a spread of images and making it into one story I could create a portfolio showing an abbreviated history of my entire body of work.

2 I think that the title of the past exhibition as well as the artbook <You Are So Brave> shows aspects of the artist Noh Seokmee’s life well. What is your driving force in making various creations such as paintings, dolls, and illustrations?

To me, the meaning of a work is its narrative. I find inspiration in narratives. I find it in daily life, reading books, or wandering around in a strange place and finding it by chance. Also, paintings, drawings, books, and dolls are created and then used as a tool for seeking further inspiration.

3 You have published many artbooks and I think they could also be considered an artist’s portfolio. To the artist Noh Seokmee, what is portfolio? A portfolio is an organized sourcebook allows others to see one’s work. The books I published in the past could be part of my portfolio.

1 Please tell us more about the Portfolio works which will be exhibited at the Savina Museum. What was your main focus?

It was not just a collection of work from past ten years but an experiment on the presentation format commonly referred to as ‘portfolio.’ Firstly, I was thinking of the newly produced miniatures of the work prototypes. Secondly, I was thinking of various sizes of platform-like structures on which the artwork will be placed.

2 To Mioon, who has been focusing on works that expand on the subject of the masses in relation to individuals in the modern day internet era, the portfolio looks like a new attempt to enter a different artistic chapter. Does the work for this exhibition indicate a new direction of a new body of works?

We have been observing our own evolution spring forth from a combination our voluntary will and the demands of the circumstances around us. In the past year or two, we have had very strong thoughts about rethinking the way of ‘producing’ and ‘appreciating’ works of art. In this context, we are going through the pace of reorganizing our previous works in a new way and contemplating our own works through this Portfolio exhibition.

3 What portfolio-making skills did you obtain as a result of your participation in numerous international and domestic residency programs?

Each situation brings about its own unique challenges. We think that it is important to organize the individual works in a way that makes it easy to understand our general body of work. Also, it is not a good idea to present too many works in a single exhibition. The most important thing is to find a genuine way to show the attitude of the artist towards his/her work through the arrangement of the exhibition itself.

1 Please tell us about the Portfolio works which will be on exhibition at the Savina Museum. What was your main focus?

Two works that we are presenting in this exhibition are updated versions of what we made as a ‘portfolio’ previously. The most emphasized part is utilizing this portfolio as an opportunity to create a brand-new work. We created a ‘machine’ which makes new images through dissembling and reassembling the already existing images. The main focus was to show our working style presenting the coincidence and tension of the system through this strange portfolio.

2 I heard that your motto is having ‘an aggressive and restrained life.’ I thought that this restrained lifestyle is the motive of the design and artworks you made. What do you think the most important thing is when you work?

The most important thing to us at this moment is to stop working when it is done adequately. As the saying goes, ‘Too much is worse than too little.’ There is nothing wrong in the old saying.

3 You founded a publishing company, Specter Press, and have published many experimental design books. Along with this kind of printed materials, to graphic designers, what do you think the most effective way to create the portfolio of digital format works?

I think it would be making a bag to carry the actual work effectively.

1 Please explain the Portfolio works which will be exhibited at the Savina Museum. What was your main focus?

Among the many portfolios that I have created for various purposes, I created this portfolio for a collection. Photographic works are often composed of a series, and the sum of all the works within a series are connected to each other like a fairy tale, thus making it difficult to determine if the work was collected individually. I think that the best way to deliver the artist’s intention is to put small sized works into one collection.

2 Your style of connecting hundreds of pictures all together seems unique. The digital process is a convenient tool but it requires a lot of time and effort. Please tell us a little bit about the your process and concept.

Digital photography is meaningful because it makes possible things which were previously impossible using analog methods. In order to untangle various metaphors and display elements of a complex storyline, the technique of using hundreds of layers on top of each other is paramount. Using 400-500 pictures taken from different locations, I make one picture with a seamless story contained in it. I use the mouse as a brush. The photograph is an outcome but the process is like painting - slow and detail-oriented.

3 For the portfolio in the photographic genre, the printing paper is a very important element. Have you gone through much trial and error in choosing the right printing paper? Do you have any new formats for your portfolios? The printing paper for the portfolio is the same as actual photographic paper: C-print. The printing paper is the same but because it is altered with the use of chemicals, I used the acid-free matte paper and box as well. Now, I am producing a portfolio that can fit in an A4 size portable case. I am experimenting with showing the works in an opened case.

1 Please tell us about the Portfolio works which will be exhibited at the Savina Museum. What was your main focus?

<Turtle Among the Ten Traditional Symbols of Longevity> is a 1 minute 30 second video work. In it, one turtle appears on the screen and appears to have stopped moving. The turtle, among the ten traditional symbols of longevity, resembles a still-life painting. Soon after, the turtle starts walking, but within 1 minute and 30 seconds, it disappears from the screen. The turtle’s walk is a symbolic representation of life’s movement-- sometimes slow and sometimes quick.

2 Your work tries to show a dual representation by going through the steps of sculpture-painting-photography and moving image transformation. This unique production process is the important key to understanding the aesthetic of your art. Please explain the overall production process and the meaning behind it.

People admire fine paintings and comment on how similar they are to photographs. At the same time, when they see very beautiful photographs, they comment on how they look like a paintings. Why? If the photograph and the painting are combined, we could find an absolute formative beauty on which everyone could agree, and that’s something I have always wanted. First, I wanted to create a photograph that was like a painting and a painting that was like a photograph. Then, I thought that if I could also add a sculpture… what would the result be? My work was born from these thoughts. I install an object or sculpture that looks like something from daily life and paint on it like a painting. I give it contrast and paint in shadows and light. Then, I finish the work by taking pictures of it. This series of works are completed as a mysteriously boundary-less photograph. They show an illusion created through a process that includes transitions in process from sculpture to painting to photography. Two-dimensional while being three-dimensional, a dream while being reality, this unique artistic genre creates porous boundaries that provide an uncanny visual aesthetic. It provides viewers with a diverse range of feelings that varies based on individual perspective.

3 The formative experiment of transforming a photograph into a moving image as the last step in your production brings your style into a broader spectrum. Please tell us about your consistent attempts towards the change and expansion of this genre.

The formative experiment wasn’t meant to break or expand the genre. If I have something I’d like to do and somewhere I’d like to go, whether someone already has been there or not doesn’t really matter much to me. The important thing is using my imagination to get to that place in a way that is free and without fear.

1 Please tell us about the Portfolio works which will be exhibited at the Savina Museum. What was your main focus?

NASA beamed a Zen poetry ‘Across the Universe’ by John Lennon into space on February 2008. As they attempt to contact with aliens through this song, we try to contact with the world through our signal. A signal is an awareness of invisible existence, hidden parts of whole, thoughts are turned into a symbol and the unit of “uni-verse” which can be heard from a tune. Our signal could be a crystallisation of our works and our portfolio. We recomposed our signal which has been beamed to the world until now using newspapers and an exhibition space.

2 “Archiv Peace,” a project title as well as a name designated for a working space, is a project that aims to record and share various forms of expression including writing, drawing, people, and thoughts. What does the “archive” mean to Jin Dallae and Park Woohyuk?

We think that change begins with observation. If we look closely at very mundane changes or shapes, there is nothing that is not new. Observation forces us to look at objects in a particular way to obtain a subjective perspective that allows us to sense big nuances in small changes. It equates to the separation of relative time which demands commotion and quickness. We attempted to slowly and deliberately gather the results of observations with an extremely detailed attention to an object. As a result, the meaning of “archive” represents a way for us to observe the object by magnifying it, collecting traces of it, and giving meaning to its memory.

3 The typographer, as an intermediary plays an important role between the teller and the reader, must fully understand the message and the background information. In this context, does the portfolio compiling the previous works play an intermediary role in the extended meaning?

The essence of typography is delivering the original message without any adjustments, that is, if such a delivery is possible. However, it is actually an ideal which is impossible to achieve. Because its nature is to exist between the teller and the reader, the original message cannot avoid being adjusted either in a good way or a bad way. Therefore, the typographer is an intermediary and is also a positive or a negative obstacle in its translation of the message. If the message of the teller is filtered through the typography and delivered to the reader, then the filter and its residue would be the typographer’s portfolio.

Modern Art is not limited to painting and sculpture but also includes installation, video, and performance art. What is the appearance of modern art’s portfolio? In the 1960s, numerous artists emerged from within New York City. Some artists encased their portfolios in leather while other artists hand-crafted sewn bindings. Those artists’ were passionate about their portfolios. In Korea, the concept of slide-type portfolios were introduced by the (then) newly emergent 90’s art competitions. Ever since that point, binder-type portfolios and CD's became common. Now even more varied kinds of innovative and creative portfolios are being produced. Savina Art Museum’s Portfolio Archive Lounge is a special place that offers a unique viewing of the portfolios of previously unrevealed artists currently participating in the Residency Program in Korea. The Studio of Residency Program includes The Gyeonggi Creation Center, The National Museum of Contemporary Art, The Goyang National Art Studio, The Changdong Art Studio, The Seoul Art Space -Geumcheon, The SeMA Nanji Residency, and The Incheon Art Platform. A total of 46 artists in residency will exhibit 60 portfolios. They will be presented in two formats: digital and print.

Digital Portfolio

Unlike Print Portfolios, Digital Portfolios have very few limitations. In recent times, because of the development of PDF, video, website, social networking and other technologies, an artists portfolio can be presented to viewers all over the world. The Portfolio archive lounge showcases digital artists' portfolios in PDF and also video format.

Print Portfolio

It is a common practice to produce a portfolio with an A3 or A4 binder or file format. Some artists publish a small number of book-format portfolios on custom paper which enhances the reproduction of their artwork. Many artists take a unique approach to creating portfolios. Some attach unusual materials, such as those used as a medium for their art, so that the viewer can indirectly "feel" the work, while others make their portfolio in the form of a miniaturized version of their artwork. Because of the artist's devotion and unique relationship with his portfolio, viewing the portfolio invokes the same emotions and feelings as are invoked when viewing a work of art.
