Presentation Objectives

1. Present the current

successful manual

methods to prevent or

treat MSK functionalinjuries & problems in

hockey players.

2. Demonstrate that the

methods we employ:

a) Provide significant value to

the players and teams by

protecting and promoting

athletic performance.

Common Hip Related Complaints

from Hockey Players

Most common non-traumatic or overuse injuries:

• Adductor Strains:

 – Account for 10 – 11 % of allinjuries

 – If not prevented or treated, canbecome chronic or even careerthreatening

 – Adductor longus is the mostcommonly strained muscle ofthe adductor group

•  Groin Pain

 – Over 15% of all hockey injuriestypically involve thegroin/abdominal region

Emery et al, Groin and Abdominal Strains in NHL, Clin J Sports Med, 1999

We know: 15% of all hockey related

injuries are groin related

“A reduced hip jointrange of motion has

been shown to beassociated with

chronic groin pain in

athletes”

Williams, 1978; Verrall et al,2005, 2007

Muscles Highly Utilized

by Hockey Players

A skater’s push-off creates a

vertical reaction force of 1.5

to 2.5 times body weight.

Rapid acceleration anddeceleration combined with

dynamic stability requirements.

These muscles typically

get shortened & weak.

Muscles Highly Utilized

by Hockey Players

These muscles

typically get tight,

overused &

inhibited.

Contemporary Medical Acupuncture

& Advanced Soft Tissue Techniques

• How do these techniques work?

• What do we know?

Contemporary Medical Acupuncture

Peripheral nerve

stimulating technique:

1. Normalizes nervous

system activity

2. Increases local blood

flow

3. Improve biochemical

environment

ART/Myofascial Release

Shortening and LengtheningTissue Using Contact to CreateTension:

1. Decrease Scar Tissue andAdhesions

2. Improve Tissue Fluid

Dynamics3. Increased Oxygenation of

the Tissue

Treatment Outcomes

• By normalizing the pelvicgirdle motion and improvingfunction of the lumbo-pelvic

stabilizers: – Decrease stress on the pelvic

girdle

 – Minimize the risk of injury anddegenerative changes in the

hip joint – Minimize risk of groin pulls,

athletic pubalgia and low backpain

In Closing

“Effectiveness of

these interventions

are maximized when

employed within the

existing coaching

and healthcare

team environment.”
