What do you understand by Corporate social responsibility and why

company needs to address the same?

    Answer:-

    Corporate Social Responsibility:-

CSR is about how companies manage the business processes to produce an overall

    positive impact on society.

Each and every company has to interact with lot of internal and external

components as illustrated in the figure given below. All these components can

influence the functions of a company.

Corporate Social Responsibility is the continuing commitment by business to

behave ethically and contribute to economic development while improving the

quality of life of the workforce and their families as well as of the local community

    and society at large"

CSR is visualized differently by different countries. In the United States, CSR has

been defined in terms of a philanphropic model in which the companies make

profits, unhindered except by fulfilling their duty to pay taxes and donate a certain

share of the profits to charitable cause.

In European model, CSR focused on operating the core business in a socially

responsible way, complemented by investment in communities for solid business

    case reasons.

The key drivers for CSR are:

    1. Enlightened self-interest Creating a synergy of ethics, a cohesive society and a sustainable globaleconomy where markets, labour and communities are able to function welltogether.

    2. Social investment Contributing to physical infrastructure and social capital is increasingly seen asa necessary part of doing business.

    3. Transparency and trust Business has low ratings of trust in public perception. There is increasingexpectation that companies will be more open, more accountable and beprepared to report publicly on their performance in social and environmentalarenas

    4. Increased public expectations of business Globally companies are expected to do more than merely provide jobs andcontribute to the economy through taxes and employment.

Why companies need corporate social responsibility?

Since the company is operating in a society, it cannot stay away from the social

issues. The society provides both customers and resources to fulfill the business

objectives of the corporate companies. Any problems occurred in the society can

affect the organization as well and hence the wellbeing of the society is

responsibility of the organization also. Since the companies are utilizing immense

resources of the society, they should take the responsibility of serving them as well.

Business people who exploit the public properties must work for the public as well.

Companies should realize that their CSR is limited to their activities alone. Theyshould cut their ties with others who cause immense damages to the society and

environment in order to highlight their CSR. For example, PepsiCo along with

more than a dozen oil companies and consumer goods manufacturers has

withdrawn its investments from Burma because of human right concerns.

A CSR programme can be an aid to recruitment and retention,[12] particularly

within the competitive graduate student market. Potential recruits often ask about

a firm's CSR policy during an interview, and having a comprehensive policy can

give an advantage. CSR can also help improve the perception of a company among

its staff, particularly when staff can become involved through payroll

giving, fundraising activities or community volunteering.

Managing riskis a central part of many corporate strategies. Reputations that take

decades to build up can be ruined in hours through incidents such as corruptionscandals or environmental accidents. These can also draw unwanted attention

from regulators, courts, governments and media. Building a genuine culture of

'doing the right thing' within a corporation can offset these risks.

In crowded marketplaces, companies strive for a unique selling proposition that

can separate them from the competition in the minds of consumers. CSR can play

a role in building customer loyalty based on distinctive ethical values.

Corporations are keen to avoid interference in their business

through taxation or regulations. By taking substantive voluntary steps, they can

persuade governments and the wider public that they are taking issues such

as health and safety, diversity, or the environment seriously as good corporate

citizens with respect to labour standards and impacts on the environment.

Companies now a days understood that, it can stay in the market with the help of

the customers and the society in which it operates alone. Neither financial abilities

nor the smart governance or management will help the companies in achieving

their long term goals. In order to achieve long term goals, the companies need to

execute their social responsibilities in a fruitful manner.

    ASSIGNMENT NO. 2

Why sustainable development has become order of the day. How

    companies are addressing the issue,?

    Answer:-

Corporate sustainabilityis a business approach that creates long-term consumer andemployee value by not only creating a "green" strategy aimed towards the naturalenvironment, but taking into consideration every dimension of how a businessoperates in the social, cultural, and economic environment. Also formulatingstrategies to build a company that fosters longevity through transparency andproper employee development.

Strategic Principles For Corporate Sustainable Development :-

    Transparency

Deals with the idea that by having an engaging and open environment within the

company as well as the community will improve performance and increase profits. It is an

open culture that promotes employee involvement in regards to the innovation and

creative processes. Reaching out to the community creates a much bigger team, is

extremely cheap, and provides evaluation from all angles. Companies are looking inward

and realizing changes must be made to fulfill environment needs such as energy

efficiency, limiting product waste and toxicity, and designing innovative products.

    Employee Development

People are the most important renewable resource and therefore, are the strongest asset

to any organization. A strong development program could be the underlying factor for a

company's success or failure. Employees are the concrete foundation for the company and

must be thoroughly analyzed and evaluated to tap into their true motivations and desires.

For a company that wants to reach its greatest potential, employees must work towards

improvement rather than perfection. Programs should be implemented that rewards star

performers, fosters the creative learning process, and provides comprehensive training

    and evaluating.

    Resource Efficiency

Companies must adapt to this rapidly changing environment by being prepared to change

and implement new creative ideas related to sustainability. Companies should not throw

away old products and materials, but rather be prepared with upgraded technology that

can transform the product. New solutions that improve recycling and waste redirecting

can ultimately reduce costs and increase profits. For example, WAL-MART Store Inc. has

redirected more than 64 percent of the waste generated by stores and Sams Club

facilities. In 2009 alone, they recycled more than 1.3 million pounds of aluminum, 120

million pounds of plastics, 11.6 million pounds of mixed paper and 4.6 billion pounds of

cardboard. On an annual basis, they expect to save around $20 million and prevent 38

million pounds of waste being sent to landfills.

Companies focused on sustainability are appointing a Chief Sustainability Officer leading

a department with a mandate to proactively develop and implement a

    corporate sustainability strategy.
