    MONSOON RAIN

    Monsoon is traditionallydefined as a seasonalreversing windaccompanied by seasonal

    changes in precipitation

    but is now used todescribe seasonal changesin atmospheric circulationand precipitation.

    The term was first used in English in British India (now India

    ,

    Bangladesh and Pakistan) and neighbouring countries to

    refer to the big seasonal winds blowing from the Bay of

    Bengal and Arabian Sea in the southwest bringing heavy

    rainfall to the area.

    The English monsoon came from Portuguese mono,

    ultimately from Arabic mawsim. The Arabic-origin word

    mausam (, ) is also the word for "weather" in

    Hindi

    , Urdu, and several other North Indian languages.

    IN THE RAINY SEASON THERE ARE AIR BORNE DISEASES AND WATER

    BORNE DISEASES. AMONG THE WATERBORNE DISEASES, DYSENTERY IS

    THE BIGGEST PROBLEM. HEPATITIS, CHOLERA,TYPHOID ETC ALSO POSE

    SERIOUS HEALTH THREATS DURING THE RAINY SEASON.

    OTHER HEALTH PROBLEMS EXPERIENCED DURING RAINY SEASONINCLUDE ASTHMA, ARTHRITIS, SKIN DISEASES, COLD (COUGH, SNEEZE,

    PHLEGM), ETC.

    PREVENTIONS

    1. Employ rain gear such as umbrella and raincoats to avoid

    exposure to rain and cold weather.

    2. Avoid crowded and poorly ventilated areas.

    3. Drink only safe water boil water if its safety is in doubt.

    4. If you need to eat out, patronize reputable restaurants only.

    Refrain from eating food bought from ambulant peddlers.

    5. Drain stagnant water from open containers such as drums and

    old tires, which are the breeding places of mosquitoes. Ensure that

    drains and gutters and sewage lines are not clogged. 6. Do not wade or swim in floodwaters.

    sanitation.
