    "IMPORTANT ASTROLOGICAL

    TERMINOLOGY"

ere you will be introduced to the terminology of Hindu astrology to enable yo

comprehend the system. The astronomy relevant to predictive astrology wil

    scussed in the first place.

    STRONOMICAL TERMINOLOGY

CLIPTIC :Ecliptic is the apparent path of the Sun.

    ODIAC & ASTROLOGY

odiac is an imaginary belt in the heavens extending to 9 on both sides of ecli

ntaining ! signs of "# each. The first sign starts from # of the sign $ries

&esha' and extends to "#. Each degree can be divided into (# minutes) and einute can be divided into (# seconds for the purpose of precision in calculatio

om the earth) the signs appear to be moving in a cloc+wise motion. The earth

as two revolutions, one around the Sun which is completed in "(-)!- days) an

e other around its own axis which is completed in ! hours. /ue to earth0s

ovement around the Sun) when the Sun is viewed in the bac+ground of the

diac it appears from the earth that the Sun moves2rotates at the speed of pe

ay in an anti3cloc+wise direction. The other revolution of the earth i.e. around

wn axis causes rise of all the ! signs in the hori1on or east in a period of !

    ours.

he 1odiac is also divided into !4 na+shatras %constellations' consisting of grou

f fixed stars. The names and extent of na+shatras in 1odiac are being separatel

dicated in the table appended at the end of the boo+.

    QUINOX,

5uinox is the time when the Sun apparently crosses the e5uator and the day an

e night are e5ual. 6t is believed that when the Sun touches its e5uinoctial poin

ro degree of $ries) the earth moves westward with reference to a particular

nstellation. The 1odiac seen or measured from the beginning of $ries from th

estward moving e5uinoctial point is +nown as moving or tropical 1odiac. 7h

ro degree of $ries is rec+oned from a particular star) the same is +nown as fix

sidereal 1odiac. The 8edic system of $strology uses the concept of fixed 1odnd that is why the Sun enters $ries almost on identical dates every year. 6n the

edic system of $strology) when we are spea+ing of various signs we are actua

ea+ing about the fixed constellations with the same name. The 8edic system

strology is +nown as irayana System.

    YANAMSA ,

he ayanamsa is the distance between the fixed and the moving 1odiacs.

    OLAR TIME ,

7e measure time based on the concept of the solar day. 6t is defined as an avera

me period of the successive passages of the Sun over a given meridian. 6t is

xactly ! hours and is +nown as the mean solar day.

    IDEREAL TIME ,

he time re5uired for a "(# degree rotation of the earth around its axis) causing

ven star in the s+y to return to the same position in relation to the earth is +no

the sidereal day and this period is about !" hours) -( minutes and seconds

anetary longitude is the angular distance measured eastward on the ecliptic fr

e starting point of the fixed 1odiac and it gives the apparent position of the pl

a particular sign at a given time.

    >?6T@/ES

ongitude is the angular distance of any place on the earth0s surface) east or we

f a standard meridian %e.g. that of ?reenwich') measured in degrees up to A#

st or west) or in units of time % hour B -'. 7ith the help of the longitude oarticular place with reference to ?reenwich %#') we calculate the local mean t

r that place. $s the earth rotates from west to east %anti3cloc+wise') those plac

st of ?reenwich will be ahead of ?reenwich Time and those to the west will

hind ?reenwich Time. *or each degree of longitude) there is a difference of f

    inutes in time.

    $T6T@/E

atitude is the angular distance on its meridian of any place of the earth0s surfa

om the e5uator. 6t is measured in degrees and minutes from the e5uator towar

ther the orth :ole or the South :ole. The e5uator represents # degree latitud

atitudes are thus lines drawn parallel to the e5uator.

ote,Even if you find it difficult to understand astronomical terms) you can

oceed with further study. The lac+ of clear understanding of the astronomicalrminology will not create hurdles in your understanding of the :redictive

strology. :redictive $strology and $stronomy are two different sciences.

edictive $strology is based on $stronomy but the deep +nowledge of $strono

    ENERAL TERMINOLOGY

    ATAL CHART/BIRTH HOROSCOPE

atal chart or radical chart or horoscope or natal positions are the positions of t

cendant and planets in various signs as noted for the time of the birth. atal

ositions) therefore) are fixed. The planetary positions noted with reference to a

articular chart for subse5uent periods are +nown as transits or transit positions

    LANETARY CONJUNCTION

onDunction is the apparent coincidence or proximity of two or more celestial

bDects as viewed from the earth. The conDunction can be exact or close. 6f the

fference in longitudes happens to be less than one degree) the resulting

nDunction is +nown as an exact conDunction. 6f the difference in longitudes is

ithin five degrees) the same is +nown as a close conDunction.

    LANETARY ASPECT

he aspects are partial and full. 6n the 8edic system of $strology) we are

ncerned with only full aspects. Each planet is believed to aspect fully the

venth house) rec+oned from the placement of the former.

addition to this i.e. the seventh aspect) planets posited outside the orbit of the

    rth as well as

pending upon their functional nature in the horoscope. The principle of exact

ose aspect is identical to exact or close conDunction i.e. when a planet casts its

pect on another planet%s' or on the most effective point of house%s' within an

f one degree) the aspect is +nown as an exact aspect. 6f the difference in plane

ngitudes is within five degrees) then the aspect is +nown as a close aspect.

he conDunctions or aspects with more than five degrees of longitudinal differe

e wide conDunctions or aspects. These do not have permanent impact in life

xcept the short lived transit influences on the planets involved in wide

nDunctions or aspects. The wide aspects give their results in later part of life)

    ound (# years or after.

he aspect of the planet will be effective corresponding to the strength of the

anet. 6f the aspecting planet is wea+ due to any reason including debilitation i

fectiveness will be wea+ and limited.

he close aspect of a functional malefic will act as a damaging force and the cl

pect of a functional benefic will act as a helping force.ENERAL AND PARTICULAR SIGNIFICATIONS OF PLANETS

he general significations of a planet mean the aspects ruled by that planet. *or

xample) the Sun rules father) status of the native) heart) digestive system) etc.)

respective of the lordship of the Sun in a particular nativity. The particular

gnifications of a planet mean the significations of its mooltri+ona house) the

gnifications of its natal house and the significations of its transiting house i.e.ouse where its mooltri+ona sign is placed) the house where the planet is place

e natal chart and the house where the planet is placed in transit.

he results of the significations of a wea+ planet fructify with delay and suffer

henever that wea+ planet is afflicted due to close aspect or conDunction with a

nctional malefic planet. The natal affliction causes damages in the entire sub3

riods of the wea+ planet and the afflicting planets while the transit affliction

use short term damages during that effective transit influence.

    LANETARY AVASTHAS (STATES)

he planetary avasthas are the conditions in which a planet is placed. The

ominent avasthas and the results produced are as under ,

INFANCY: 7henever the longitude of a planet in a particular sign is less

an - degrees) it is said to be in the state of infancy. Such a planet is incapable

lly promoting2protecting its general and particular significations.

OLD AGE: 7henever the longitude of a planet in a particular sign is mo

an !- degrees) it is said to be in the state of old age. Such a planet is incapabl

lly promoting2protecting its general and particular significations.

O"N SIGN: $ planet in its own sign is treated as strong and is capable of

nerating the expected results) provided it is otherwise strong.

    PLANETARY COMBUSTION

  • 7/26/2019 Astro Terminlogy

    9/14

6f the Sun is a functional benefic planet) is the combust planet always

    nsidered wea+K

et us first understand the combustion as a concept. 7henever a planet comes

ry near to the Sun) it is divested of its brightness %luster'. The said state is cal

mbustion. 7hile in the state of combustion) the planets lac+ power to protect

nd promote the significations2houses ruled by them. 6f such a planet is wea+ o

her accounts too) the significations ruled by them do not even ta+e birth. The

anets are said to be combust when they are within the below mentioned degre

n either side of the Sun.

7hen both the Sun and the combust planet are functional benefic planets and a

osely conDunct) we have to see their two roles distinctively. *irstly) as the lord

e two auspicious houses they rule. The significations of both of these houses

ourish and will be connected to each other except the short run transit malefic

fluences which will stress the combust planet comparatively more than the Su

econdly) the role of a combust planet. The combust planet is considered as a

ea+ planet but in case the Sun and planet%s' involved are functional beneficanets) the wea+ness of the combust planet%s' is operative only at the time of n

    transit afflictions.

Can we call the combust planet L7ea+LK

es. The wea+ness due to combustion gives high and low tides in life and need

tral strength for the planets to enable them to fight natal and 2 or transit

    flictions.

7e understand that when combust) a planet will transfer its significations to

    un.

nDunction is more than ( degreesK

a functional malefic planet closely influences any other planet or the Sun) anctional malefic planet will certainly color the significations of the planet und

    influence) negatively.

6s there ever a time when the transit influence continues for a longer duration

enerally) the maximum limit of transit influences is around four months when

    ahu2etu axis is stationary.

$s for the Sun) to what extent the influence of the combust planet helps as th

mbust planet will be wea+ and not in a position to help the SunK

7hen both the Sun and the combust planet are functional benefic planets and a

osely conDunct) one should see their role as the lords of the two houses they ru

he significations of both of these houses will flourish and will be connected to

ch other except the short run transit malefic influences which will stress thembust planet comparatively more than the Sun.

6n a situation) where the dispositor of the Sun is combust) the Sun indirectly
