    Salam Nabil,

    1.

well, I thought wikipedia is more reliable to find out about the qualifications of a

North American academic (we are not dealing with a substantive issue here) than ablog post written by someone who seems to hate the author of award-winning and

best-selling works No God but God and Zealot among others. I don't think he was

lying when he said he was trained in history of religions.

If I say a few years from now that I trained in the study of Qur'an, and someone

objects that I went to the Dept of Usul al-Din and Comparative Religion for my MA

(even if my thesis was an exercise in thematic interpretation of Qur'an), and I worked

with a professor in the Dept of History (even if on the history of Qur'an) for my PhD

and therefore I am not qualified to talk about Qur'an, would that make sense?

I am actually amazed that Iranians and Muslims have taken it upon themselves todiscredit Aslan. His own website talks about his education and appointments, if you

    can trust him:

York Times BestsellerZealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth.

He is the founder of AslanMedia.com, an online journal for news and entertainment about the

Middle East and the world, and co-founder and Chief Creative Officer of BoomGen Studios, the

premier entertainment brand for creative content from and about the Greater Middle East.

Aslan's degrees include a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies from Santa Clara University (Majorfocus: New Testament; Minor: Greek) , a Master of Theological Studies from Harvard

University (Major focus: History of Religions), a PhD in the Sociology of Religions from the

University of California, Santa Barbara, and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Iowa,

where he was named the Truman Capote Fellow in Fiction. An Adjunct Senior Fellow at the

Council on Foreign Relations, he is also a member of the Los Angeles Institute for the Humanities

and the Pacific Council on International Policy. He serves on the board of directors of the

Ploughshares Fund, which gives grants for peace and security issues; Narrative Four, which

connects people through the exchange of stories; PEN USA, which champions the rights of writers

under siege around the world; and the Levantine Cultural Center, which builds bridges between

Americans and the Arab/Muslim world through the arts.

Aslan's first book is the International Bestseller,No god but God: The Origins, Evolution, and

Future of Islam, which has been translated into thirteen languages, and named one of the 100 most

important books of the last decade. He is also the author ofHow to Win a Cosmic War(published in

paperback asBeyond Fundamentalism: Confronting Religious Extremism in a Globalized Age), as

well as editor of two volumes: Tablet and Pen: Literary Landscapes from the Modern Middle East,

andMuslims and Jews in America: Commonalties, Contentions, and Complexities.

Born in Iran, he lives in Los Angeles with his wife (author and entrepreneurJessica Jackley) where

he is Associate Professor of Creative Writing and Cooperating Faculty in the Department of

Religion at the University of California, Riverside. His previous academic positions include the

Wallerstein Distinguished Professor of Religion, Community and Conflict at Drew University in

New Jersey (2012-2013), and Visiting Assistant Professor of Religion at the University of Iowa(2000-2003).

Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth

From the internationally bestselling author ofNo god but Godcomes a fascinating, provocative, and

meticulously researched biography that calls into question everything we thought we knew about

    Jesus of Nazareth.

Two thousand years ago, an itinerant Jewish preacher and miracle worker walked across the Galilee,

gathering followers to establish what he called the Kingdom of God. The revolutionary

movement he launched was so threatening to the established order that he was captured, tortured, and executed as a state criminal.

Two decades after his shameful death, his followers would call him God.

Sifting through centuries of mythmaking, Reza Aslan sheds new light on one of historys most

influential and enigmatic characters by examining Jesus through the lens of the tumultuous era in

which he lived: first century Palestine, an age awash in apocalyptic fervor. Scores of Jewish

prophets, preachers, and would-be messiahs traipse through the Holy Land, bearing messages from

God. This is the age of zealotrya fervent nationalism that made resistance to the Roman

occupation a sacred duty incumbent on all Jews. And few figures better exemplified this principle

than the charismatic Galilean who defied both the imperial authorities and their allies in the Jewish

    religious hierarchy.

Balancing the Jesus of the Gospels against the historical sources, Aslan explores this diverse and

turbulent age and, in doing so, challenges the conventional portraits of Jesus of Nazareth. Aslan

describes a man full of conviction and passion, yet rife with contradiction: a man of peace who

exhorted his followers to arm themselves with swords; an exorcist and faith healer who urged his

disciples to keep his identity a secret; and ultimately, the seditious King of the Jews whose

promise of liberation from Rome went unfulfilled in his brief lifetime. Aslan explores the reasons

why the early Christian church preferred to promulgate an image of Jesus as a peaceful spiritual

teacher rather than a politically conscious revolutionary. And he grapples with the riddle of how

Jesus understood himself, the mystery that is at the heart of all subsequent claims about hisdivinity.

Zealotquestions what we thought we knew about Jesus of Nazaretheven as it affirms the radical

and transformative nature of his life and mission. The result is a thought-provoking, elegantly

written biography with the pulse of a fast-paced novel: a singularly brilliant portrait of a man, a

time, and the birth of a religion.

No god but God: The Origins, Evolution, and Future of Islam

InNo god but God, internationally acclaimed scholar Reza Aslan explains Islamthe origins and

evolution of the faithin all its beauty and complexity. This updated edition addresses the events of

the past decade, analyzing how they have influenced Islams position in modern culture. Aslan

explores what the popular demonstrations pushing for democracy in the Middle East mean for the

future of Islam in the region, how the Internet and social media have affected Islams evolution, and

how the war on terror has altered the geopolitical balance of power in the Middle East. He also

provides an update on the contemporary Muslim womens movement, a discussion of the

controversy over veiling in Europe, an in-depth history of Jihadism, and a look at how Muslims

living in North America and Europe are changing the face of Islam. Timely and persuasive,No god

but Godis an elegantly written account that explains this magnificent yet misunderstood faith.

Tablet & Pen: Literary Landscapes from the Modern Middle

    East

The countries that stretch along the broad horizons of the Middle Eastfrom Morocco to Iran, from

Turkey to Pakistanboast different cultures, different languages, and different religions. Yet the

literary landscape of this dynamic part of the world has been bound together not by borders and

nationalities, but by a common experience of Western imperialism. Keenly aware of the collected

scars left by a legacy of colonial rule, the acclaimed writer Reza Aslan, with a team of four regionaleditors and seventy-seven translators, cogently demonstrates with Tablet and Pen how literature can,

in fact, be used to form identity and serve as an extraordinary chronicle of the disrupted histories of

    the region.

Acting with Words Without Borders, which fosters international exchange through translation and

publication of the worlds finest literature, Aslan has purposefully situated this volume in the

twentieth century, beyond the familiar confines of the Ottoman past, believing that the writers who

have emerged in the last hundred years have not received their full due. This monumental

collection, therefore, of nearly two hundred pieces, including short stories, novels, memoirs, essays

and works of dramamany of them presented in English for the first timefeatures translated

works from Arabic, Persian, Urdu, and Turkish. Organized chronologically, the volume spans a

century of literaturefrom the famed Arab poet Khalil Gibran to the Nobel laureates Naguib

Mahfouz and Orhan Pamuk, from the great Syrian-Lebanese poet Adonis to the grand dame of Urdu

fiction, Ismat Chughtaiconnected by the extraordinarily rich tradition of resplendent cultures that

have been all too often ignored by the Western canon.

By shifting Americas perception of the Middle Eastern world away from religion and politics,

Tablet and Pen evokes the splendors of a region through the voices of its writers and poets, whose

literature tells an urgent and liberating story. With a wealth of contextual information that places the

writing within the historical, political, and cultural breadth of the region, Tablet & Pen is

transcendent, a book to be devoured as a single sustained narrative, from the first page to the last.

Creating a vital bridge between two estranged cultures, "this is that rare anthology: cohesive, affecting, and informing" (Publishers Weekly).

Includes the writings of Kahlil Gibran, Tawfiq al-Hakim, Nzim Hikmet, Ismat Chughtai,

Muhammad Iqbal, Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Forugh Farrokhzad, Ahmet Hamdi Tanpnar, Yaar Kemal,

Ghassan Kanafani, Mahmoud Darwish, Adonis, Ahmad Shamloo, Naguib Mahfouz, Orhan Pamuk,

    and more.

How to Win a Cosmic War

The wars in the Middle East have become religious wars in which God is believed to be directly

engaged on behalf of one side against the other. The hijackers who attacked America on September11, 2001, thought they were fighting in the name of God. According to award-winning writer and

scholar of religions Reza Aslan, the United States, by infusing the War on Terror with its own

religiously polarizing rhetoric, is fighting a similar wara war that cant be won.

The book is both an in-depth study of the ideology fueling al-Qaida, the Taliban, and like-minded

militants throughout the Muslim world and an exploration of religious violence in Judaism,

Christianity, and Islam. At a time when religion and politics increasingly share the same vocabulary

and function in the same sphere, Aslan writes that we must strip the conflicts of our world of their

religious connotations and address the earthly grievances that always lie at its root.

How do you win a religious war? By refusing to fight in one.

Featuring new content and updated analysis. Originally published asHow to Win a Cosmic War.

telecommunications and as being interdependent economically, socially, and

politically, there is increasing apprehension globally that continual engineering

advancements and uncontrolled scientific research leading to contentious

breakthroughs may not always lead to ethically acceptable results such as in health,

education, tourism, telecommunication and other services. Reflecting on this concern,

the Faculty of Engineering at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) is

organizing the third International Conference on Engineering Professional Ethics and

    Education (ICEPEE13).

The 3rd ICEPEE13 focuses on various aspects of engineering professional ethics and

education; sustainable development which incorporates resource conservation andusage that aims to meet human needs while preserving the environment so that these

needs can be met not only in the present, but also for future generations as well as

maintaining a balance between material development and responsibility by

addressing a range of issues surrounding ethics and values in relation to daily life

human and conduct. Environmental problems cannot be solved through knowledge

and technology alone except supported adequately with moral conviction and ethical

consciousness on both individual and social levels to motivate people to forgo some

of the short-range profits of this life, and to make personal sacrifices for the common

good. We anticipate the participants will offer significant deliberations on the diverse

topics of the conference and share with the rest of the world their ideas and research

    outputs.
