LOCATIONAthens is the capital city of Greece, in the South of Europe. It has coast in the Mediterranean Sea, and it´s a very good place to go on summer holidays.

POPULATIONWith almost three and a half million inhabitants, almost one-third of Greece's population lives in Athens. Its metropolitan area occupies a plain of 427 square km in the Balkan peninsula.

MONUMENTS I• Acropolis of Athens

The Acropolis of Athens is the most important place in all Greece. The Upper Town was the seat of the main places of worship of Ancient Greece.

• ParthenonLocated in the interior of the Acropolis, the Parthenon is the most important building of this one. It is the most visited monument in the country.

Formerly, the agora was the center of the social, political and commercial life of the city in antiquity.

• Theater of DionisoBuilt in the 6th century BC, the Theater of Dionysos was the largest theater built by the ancient Greeks, with a capacity of 17,000 spectators.

HISTORYAs a commercial and successful city, Athens would awaken the greed of many Greek cities. Sparta joined other Greek cities to attack Athens. The Peloponnesian War (431-404 BC) lasted 27 years and Sparta emerged victorious, taking the Greek capital for themselves.

ECONOMYMuch of Greece's industrial activity is concentrated around Athens. Among the articles it produces are textiles and chemicals, alcoholic beverages, paper, detergents, flour, leather and ceramics. The graphic arts, banking and tourism also occupy a prominent place in the economic activity of the city, which is also the center of the national transport network.
