Jimmy Smith. He has performed for the 1998 and 2000 Jazz Ambassadors Programheld at The Kennedy Center for thePerforming Arts in Washington D.C. Also as part of this program,Steve completed music tours throughout Africa, where heperformed and conducted jazz workshops which were featured onradio and television programs in over 12 countries. In 2003, Steve

was a featured performer with the Cosumnes River College Jazz Orchestra at the North Sea Jazz Festival with additionalperformances in Amsterdam, Paris and England. In 2004 Stevetraveled to Sao Paulo, Brazil with jazz accordion legend The ArtVan Damme Quintet and performed at the Tim Festival. In 2010Steve played guitar on jazz drummer Mike Clark’s CD “Carnival of Soul”, which climbed to #8 on the international jazz charts.

The history of Mother’s Day What could be more appropriate than taking a special day to celebrate the loving careour mothers give us day in and day out? In fact, people have been honoring theirmothers for centuries. But did you know that this day originated with the Greeks who held a celebration each spring to honour Rhea, the mother of al l the gods? During the 16th century, the British adapted this ancient tradition and instituted“Mothering Day.” This Sunday gave all young people who worked away from homean opportunity to visit their mothers for a special day of festivities in her honor. Unfortunately, this tradition slowly died out over time and actually disappeared for afew centuries until an elementary school teacher in the United States revived publicinterest in this day. After several years of government lobbying, Mother’s Day wasdeclared a national holiday in 1914. Shortly after, when American soldiers stationed in France during World War I sent ahorde of cards and letters to their mothers in May, the French took notice anddecided that this was a holiday they would like to celebrate as well. Today in the US, Mother’s Day is one of the most-celebrated holidays. From coast tocoast, mothers are showered with love and presents. After all, with all the love they give us every single day of the year, dedicating one day in their honor is the least that we can do!

Weight lost. Attitudes changed.Bodies shaped. Futures gained. Thisis what it looked like at the Traderoffice during the wrap-up party forthe conclusion of the Lighten Up!

gathered to celebrate the conclusion of Auburn’s premier fitness program. And it wasquite a celebration! All the contestants met orexceeded their goals, so the atmosphere wasone of pride and true success across the board.

Contestants milledaround admiring

each other’sphysiques,exchanging exercisestories and tradingcookbook recommendations.

Everyone was sosuccessful, in fact,that one winner was

not chosen. Such overwhelming achievement warranted that everyone come out ahead.Every contestant received a prize and acommendation, and every contestant got achance to speak to the group about the effectsof the program.

For example, Gunter Vogtmann, 82, showedhimself a changed man just walking into theroom. Postureerect with a

swagger in hisstep, he lookscompletely different fromthe shuffling,grim man whobegan theprogram 13 weeks earlier. Gunter’s wife Betty,

who suggested that Gunter register forLighten Up! in the first place, said that she

notices many changes in Gunter’s life.

“Every time he comes home fromthe gym, he has a sparkle in his eye,”Betty said. “Many people havenoticed a difference in him. Even hisattitude has changed. He walksdifferently.”

“Rich told me to swagger alittle,” Gunter laughed. “Itfeels good without the

stomach I used to have. I went to the gym to loosen up. Losing 14pounds and five inches around my waist

were benefits I didn’t expect.”

Gunter’s trainer, Rich Smith of Courthouse Athletic Club, said thatGunter was a pleasure to train.

“It might have originally been a

competition, but now for Gunter it’s alifetime thing. Gunter has surpassed all our goals,”Rich said proudly.

On the other end of the age scale, Mike Buttram,20, dropped over four belt sizes and 27 poundsduring his training sessions with Rich atCourthouse.

“The whole point of this for me was to get into thehabit of being in better health,” Mike said. “People

come up to me all the time now and complimentme on how different I look. I definitely will keepgoing. In fact, Rich and I already have plans forour next workout.”

The success storiesare truly inspiring,and they go on andon. Just a few moreexamples include the

Becky DittemoreEscalante, whotrained at Anytime Fitness with Kathy Kaplan,

whittled a waist into her figure and is enjoying wearing flirty summer clothes to show off her new shape.

Leslie Brindl, 48, who trained with Aaron Johnsonat Fitness By Design, learned to work her healthneeds into her busy schedule.

For Emmeline Tober, 20, who trained withBrad Herman at Anytime Fitness, Lighten Up!helped her lose weight and build confidence inherself.

Aimee Cannedy, 37, who also trained withBrad, taught the exerciseroutines to her kids and worksout with the whole family athome.

Alan Hammond, 46, also gothis family involved in hislifestyle change and becamethe poster child for his trainerKathy at Anytime Fitness. Heput in a ton of effort and gotincredible results!

“I can’t even explain what this

program has done for us,”Alan said. “My wife and I were in such a rut, but we have gotten ourentire household switched around.”

After reorganizing their pantry, Alan and his wife switched to only whole, healthy foods.Coupled with a strenuous workout regimencustomized by Kathy, this approach helpedAlan lose over 37 pounds!

Aside from the weight, Alan’s blood pressure isnow under control as well, leaving him on atotally different level of health than he came

into the competition with.

“I felt like I was a ticking time bomb becausea year ago my blood pressure was 210. Now I’m down to 125, andI’m off medication,”Alan said.
