The restaurant staff had been solici-

tous and the food top-notch. It was

decided that we would take a photo

of our meal there with David, our

Caucasian friend.

"Shashin, ok?" David turned to the be-

mused patrons at the next table. A young

Japanese man stepped up to take the

camera. We smiled, said “chee-zu!”, and

were returning to our seats when — "Iide-

suka?" The young man who had taken

our photograph gestured towards David,

smiling.

“You want to take a photo with us?”

David asked.

“No,” the young man replied. “Onry

you” – pointing at David. "With famiry."

From behind him, a lady and a little girl

emerged. The man turned away from

David to us. "One of you," he ordered po-

litely. "You help take photo."

Afterwards, David did his best to stifle

his laughter. "I mean, I'm really something

to look at," he winked. "It's not necessarily

the race thing, mates."

To be fair, David is dishy - a cross be-

tween Robin van Persie and an American

fratboy - but the Japanese young man

would probably not have asked an Asian

ikemen for a photograph. This may sound

cynical, but is simply the culmination of

our experience in Japan. As ethnic Chi-

nese Singaporeans who are often mis-

taken for natives here, we are resigned to

being left out of Japanese photographs,

much as we have learned to be amused

when locals praise David’s awkward Japa-

nese over our JLPT-tested fluency; when

レストランの店員はとても丁寧で、食事も文句無し。だから、友人デイビッドと記念に写真を撮ろうと思ったの。

「 シ ャ シ ン、 オ ッ ケ ー？」 と 近 く に い た 人にデイビッドが聞くと、若い男性が私たち夫婦とデイビット 3 人の写真を撮ってくれた。するとシャッターを押してくれたその彼が、今度は私たちに向かってジェスチャー

してる。最初は何を言いたいのかわからなかったけど、どうやら一緒に写真を撮りたいらしい。「You want to take a photo with us?」って聞くと、彼は「ノー ...」と言い、「オンリーユー」ってデイビットを指さしてこう言ったの。「ウィズ マイ ファミリー」と。そして今度は私たちの方に来て優しくこう言ったの「You help take photo」。

　 デ イ ビ ッ ト は 席 に 着 く な り「 や っ ぱ り、僕は目立つんだ」と、ウィンクしてこう言った。「彼らに差別の意識はないから、気にするなよ。」確かに彼の見かけは悪くない。サッカー選手のヴァンパーシーにちょっと太めのアメリカ人を混ぜた感じかな。けれども、もしそこにかっこいいアジア人がいても、わざわざ声をかけて写真を撮るなんてことはなかったと思う。　これは私たちが日本で経験した象徴的な出来事のひとつ。私たちは、観光客のように振る舞う中華系シンガポール人だけど、日本人と大差ない見かけだから、日本人の写真撮影の対象外。欧米系のデイビッドのつたない日本語は賞賛の対象だけど、日本語検定を受けて日本語堪能な私たちは褒め

to look different and say a charmingly

accented "konnichiwa". Still, we believe

there is a much higher upside that awaits

the Asian gaijin. An overtly foreign face

is always a fun novelty, but only someone

who looks Japanese can truly ever fit in.

So an Asian foreigner, by learning the local

ways and language in earnest, will in time

gain not just the goodwill of the Japanese,

but also their acceptance in a way that will

never be open to a Westerner. For a soci-

ety as comfortable to live in as Japan, this

is effort that might well prove worthwhile.

English lesson recruiters ignore us in fa-

vour of our American friends; when tele-

vision reporters stop us in the street but

direct their questions only to our European

companions.

For most Westerners, Japan is the per-

fect getaway. Its culture could not be more

foreign, but its modern and civilised society

allows them to feel right at home. Add to

this the endless Japanese fascination with

Caucasian faces, and it becomes clear why

Japan is one of the most popular destina-

tions for Westerns seeking an exotic adven-

ture. They might be lost and lost in transla-

tion, but with the creature comforts Japan

hides amidst its ninjas and otakus, more

often than not these travellers have every

faith that they will “find themselves” in the

land of the rising sun.

But what if a foreigner looks no different

from the Japanese? What if the foreigner

is of Asian descent, or even from one of the

many neighbours that Japan has invaded

before? Despite sharing kindred looks, cul-

tural histories and even languages, Asians

in Japan know they should expect less “yo-

koso!” than “yo, why are you still here?” For

them, there is no feeling of being extraordi-

nary; only of being extraneous.

But maybe it makes sense that the

newcomers who feel the most alienated

in Japan are the ones who are, geographi-

cally and historically, closest to it. After all,

familiarity breeds contempt; towards the

other Asians who sojourn in their country,

the Japanese likely feel less enthusiastic in-

terest than economic rivalry, residual guilt,

and a reminder of their less sophisticated

past. Indeed, not all Asians behave perfect-

ly in Japan either. The guy jabbering on his

phone in the bus and the family attempting

to jump the supermarket queue are, in our

experience, more likely to be Asian gaijin

than Japanese – stereotypes that have no

doubt added to the Japanese antipathy to-

wards other Asians.

The upshot of all this is that Asian in-

terlopers in Japan have a higher threshold

to cross to find favour with the Japanese

than do Western ones, who simply have

言語をシェアしているにも関わらず、日本にいるアジア人は外国人として特別扱いされるのでもない。そして、日本人に似ているからといって日本人のように扱われるわけでもない ...。　だからといってひねる必要はないけれど、これから日本に来るアジア人が、日本社会に感情的に引き裂かれたように感じたとしても、それは似通っていて、過去を知る者同士だからこそ、日本人は私たちのようなアジア人に対して、興味よりも先に経済的な競争心を掻き立てたり、以前の教養のない社会を思い出したりするのかもしれないことを知っておいてほしい。確かに、日本に居るアジア人の全てが行儀が良いわけではない、とアジア人の私すら感じるくらい

だから、私たちのような日本に住まうアジア人が、いかにも欧米人な彼らと同じように、日本人の好意を受けるには限界があると思うのも分かる。けれど、それでも私たちは、アジア人国外住居者に待ち受ける明るい未来を期待して、諦めずに努力するべきだと信じている。日本人にそっくりな “外国人” で終わることなく、言語習得や日本の習いに真摯に取り組んでいるアジア系の外国人は、時間はかかるけど、日本の好意を得るだけでなく、欧米人には決して開かれない『懐』へと受け入れられるんだから。日本のように住み易い社会で、暮らしていけるなら、充分に価値ある努力と時間だと思うけど、ドーデショね？

◊ Foreign Residents to Receive Resident Register Code NumbersForeign residents are now included in

the Basic Resident Registers Network,

or Juki-Net, as per the revised Basic

Resident Registration Act. All foreign

residents of Fukuoka have been sent a

Resident Register Code Number on July

12. This 11-digit number is used to identi-

fy individuals in the nationwide Juki-Net.

If you would like to receive a Juki-Net

Card, please read the multilingual flyer

enclosed with your notice.

◊ Fukuoka History Smartphone AppIn mid-July, Fukuoka City launched a

smartphone app called "Fukuoka History

Navi" that guides users on walking tours

of the city's cultural assets. The first in-

stallment, "Medieval Hakata's Prosper-

ity", starts at Hakata Station and takes

users to Jotenji, Shofukuji and Tochoji

Temples as well as Kushida Shrine and

Hakatamachiya Furusatokan. The second

installment will guide users around the

Fukuoka Castle area, and the City plans

to release new courses in the future. The

free app can be downloaded for iPhone

and Android.

◊ Night ZooThe "Night Zoo" event returns again this

year every Saturday of August. After

closing as usual at 17:00, the Zoo will re-

open at 18:00. A free shuttle bus will run

between the Sakurazaka and Dobutsuen-

mae bus stops from 17:50 onwards, and

bus riders will receive a 20% discount

on admission. (The last bus leaves the

zoo at 21:10.) • Every Saturday in August,

◊ Recycle Your Old DevicesThe City uses collection boxes in local

supermarkets and other spots to recycle

the rare metals contained in small elec-

tronic devices. This August, the City will

add boxes at ward office and four sub-

way stations (Hakata, Fukuoka Airport,

Nishijin and Meinohama) to boost its col-

lection efforts. If you have any old cell

phones, portable music players or other

small devices, please drop them in one

of the green collection boxes.
