DearReader;apleafromtheAssociation.

The Smithers Senior Citizens Association has grown in numbers. We now have a membership of over 250.

Our hall is well used by our members for various activities which is wonderful. It has been proven that we seniors lead a happy and healthier life by being active.

We also rent the hall for memorials, birthdays and other gatherings on weekends, which are the only days and evenings available.

Therefore we are planning to build an 850 square foot room onto the kitchen side of the hall. It will be self contained with a toilet and sink. The space will be used for training (example computer). More and more we are required to submit information on line, no longer will government and other agencies accept hand written paper reports. Also having speakers come in and give talks on topics that are important to us.

We also plan to have recreational activities in the room. Several groups that play games can use a smaller place and then have more people involved in activities. We are anxious to introduce floor curling and pickle ball to the seniors. This room would be the perfect size to offer the additional activities.

So with this letter we are requesting donations to help with the construction costs $205,800.00 estimate. Our organization has $80,000.00; we need $125,800.00 to complete the project.

For every $100.00 that you donate (one square foot) your name will be placed on a plaque in that room. Every $1000.00 (one square meter) will give you your name on the plaque and one free event in that room.

We are looking into writing grants for funding from the Federal and Provincial governments as well as other agencies.

To receive a charitable receipt, donations need to be made to the Bulkley Seniors Housing Society. They will issue a receipt and turn the monies over to the Smithers Seniors.

Beautiful EnglishI called an old school friend and asked what was he doing. He replied that he is working on "Aqua-thermal treatment of ceramics, aluminium and steel under a constrained environment".I was impressed......>>>On further enquiring I learnt that he was washing dishes with hot water .......Under his wife's supervision.

Nufie HumourEveryone seems to be in such a hurry to scream 'racism' these days. Here is a perfect example.A man asked, "In what aisle would I find the Newfy sausage?" The shop assistant asks, "Are you from Newfoundland?" The guy, clearly offended, says, "Yes I am. But let me ask you something, “If I had asked for Italian sausage, would you ask me if I was Italian? Or if I had asked for German Bratwurst, would you ask me if I was German? Or if I asked for a kosher hot dog would you ask me if I was Jewish? Or if I had asked for a Taco, would you ask if I was Mexican? Or if I asked for Polish sausage, would you ask if I was Polish?" The shop assistant says, "No, I probably wouldn't." The guy says, "Well then, because I asked for Newfy sausage, why did you ask me if I'm from Newfoundland?"

The clerk replied, "Because you're in Home Hardware."

The Life and Times of Dr. Samuel E. Mostyn-Hoops Part 1 by Dirk Mendel, edited by Harry Kruisselbrink

The first community in the central part of the Bulkley Valley was Aldermere. It was located on the bench just above present day Telkwa. It came into existence in 1903-1904 and preceded

the establishment of Telkwa by several years. Telkwa came into existence in 1907. Smithers did not come into existence until 1913. By the time the Grand Trunk Pacific Railroad was up and running in 1914, the community of Aldermere had had its day and faded into history.

One of the prominent and well-known fami-lies in Aldermere was the Hoops family, Ernest, his brother Brabazon and sister Eileen. The Hoops siblings came to Aldermere in 1907 when that community was in its prime. An older brother, Walter, became a doctor and spent his life in Malaysia and was even involved in politics there.

The members of the Hoops family were very involved in community life and business in Alder-mere and later in Telkwa. Ernest (1878-1964) married Theresa Kelly. Brabazon (1883-1951), always called “Brab” for short, married the beau-tiful Doris Campbell. Their daughter, Marjorie Rosberg, will probably be remembered by some of the long-time valley residents. Later in her life,

Marjorie became a member of the Heritage Club, the group who wrote the book “Bulkley Valley Stories,” in fact she was editor of that book. Sister Eileen (1885-1963) never married; she is buried in the Telkwa cemetery beside Doris Hoops’ sister Marjorie Campbell.

As a note of interest, Brab Hoops was one of the first, if not the first, automobile owners in the Bulkley Valley. He bought a Model T Ford from William Henry for $650 - and a proud owner he was!

Not well known in the Bulkley Valley was the Hoops clan’s father, Dr. Samuel Evans Mostyn-Hoops. He was born in 1854 in Ireland and died in 1937 in Victoria, B.C. He had some very inter-esting adventures in his life. He was a member of the noted Helpman Expedition of 1897.

The Helpman Expedition was a group of 13 prominent and wealthy British professionals and businessmen who, facilitated by the Helpman and Company of England, were determined to travel to the famous Klondike gold fields to strike it rich! Dr. Mostyn-Hoops was 43 years old when he first arrived in Canada in late 1897 to begin the adventure.

The group was determined to follow the well-advertised “All Canadian Route” to the Yukon. This was the most difficult route of all, starting in Edmonton and then overland through the rough

CANADIAN . . . EH! What makes you a proud Canadian? Sounds like a pretty easy question, but adults have a way of complicating things that are simple. So if you really want an honest answer, ask a child. This is what I learned: Maple syrup on my pancakes; Nickels. . . the money with a beaver on the back; Mounties on horseback, marching to music; Our song, O' Canada, has words I can remember; Hockey. If you can skate, you can play hockey; Lots of different friends to play with; I can go to school everyday; A red and white flag that's easy to draw

In a few short sentences, children have told us we live in a free, secure and multi-cultural country; a country where access to education, healthy activity and free trade are an important part of everyday life; and a country where our flag and our anthem are known around the world. bac©

Autumn Leaves P11wilderness to Dawson City. Only a handful of the approximately 2,000 prospectors who trav-elled this route actually reached Dawson City. It was never a viable route and many lost their lives trying to reach their destination. As one newspa-per article later reported, “Richter of New York, who committed suicide, is said to have put up a sign on a tree which read, “Hell can’t be worse than this trail; I’ll chance it.”

Right from the start, the Helpman Expedi-tion had little chance of ever arriving in Dawson city. That city, after all, was some 2,500 kilome-ters (1550 miles) away from Edmonton.

The Helpman and Company of England funded and organized the necessary supplies and equipment. They were shipped from England and piled into numerous railway boxcars in Halifax. You can imagine the amount of supplies that were shipped! From Halifax the supplies were trans-ported to Edmonton via Calgary.

Some of the members arrived in New York, including Samuel Mostyn-Hoops, and made their way to Montreal to join the expedition. All participants arrived in Edmonton between October 28th and Christmas Day and were joined by ten experienced wranglers and guides hired on an eleven-month contract. Dr. Mostyn-Hoops reportedly arrived in Calgary on Decem-ber 16, 1897. Here horses were purchased from the Hudson Bay Company and brought up to Edmonton by rail.

The last two members of the expedition, Major John Henry Helpman and Captain Edward Wentworth Alleyne, arrived in Edmon-ton on December 24th, the day before Christmas, however, Captain Alleyne had contracted pneu-monia on the trip from Calgary to Edmonton. He died on December 27th 1897. He was 45 and one of the organizing directors of the expedition.

needed for the arduous journey to the Yukon were well underway before the last members of the expedition arrived in Edmonton. Expedition expenses were reported in newspapers to be in the $50,000 range. This included 50 tons of equip-ment (yes, 50 tons!) spread over 120 horses, 90 sleighs and three dog trains.

All provisions and supplies for the gold crusade were brought from England, except the horses, and the duty thereon amounted to several thousand dollars. In truth, they were provisioned under War Office approval, for, said they, “We are English gentlemen and must travel as English gentlemen.” Baled hay and hay-choppers, baths, beds, tents, sanitary conveniences, and other impedimenta were imported by the train-load.1

Also significant provisions of champagne, burgundy, brandy and specialty liquors were off loaded in Edmonton only to find out that a prohibition law forbade all alcohol from being transported across the Yukon border. This was welcomed news in Edmonton as the spirits had to be disposed of. That included the champagne, which, of course, wasn’t the same after it had been frozen!

On January 23rd 1898, the first party left Edmonton followed by two other party groups shortly after.

Almost five months later, the group with Dr. Mostyn-Hoops arrived at the Lesser Slave Lake post on June 11th 1898, having travelled about 400 kilometers (250 miles) along the sketchy trails. Even before reaching the lake a major reorganization was needed. By that time every-one realized that the Klondike was certainly not reachable that summer.

1 Canuck, Janey. Seeds of Pine. The Musson Book Company. Toronto. 1923. P.278

At Lesser Slave Lake Major Helpman and others returned to Edmonton and seven men were discharged. The rest continued on to the Peace River Crossing about 140 kilometers (87 miles) from the Lesser Slave Lake post. Here one party, including Mostyn-Hoops, continued down the Peace River and prospected their way toward Slave Lake while the other party went up the Wapiti to prospect.

Dr. Mostyn-Hoops and his party overwin-tered in Fort Resolution on Slave Lake and gave up prospecting in the spring of 1899. He returned to Edmonton and then moved to Vancouver where he was listed as a physician in Henderson’s Directory in 1901. Other members of the broken Helpman Expedition returned to England, some stayed in Canada and others strayed to the U.S.

….. Stay tuned as this story will continue on to Telkwa in April’s Autumn Leaves. ☺

"Lexophile" is a word used to describe those that have a love for words, such as "you can tune a piano, but you can't tuna fish", or "to write with a broken pencil is pointless." A competition to see who can come up with the best lexophiles is held every year in an undisclosed location. Here are this year's winning submissions: ... When fish are in schools, they sometimes take debate.... A thief who stole a calendar got twelve months.... When the smog lifts in Los Angeles U.C.L.A. ... The batteries were given out free of charge.... A dentist and a manicurist married. They fought tooth and nail.... A will is a dead giveaway.... With her marriage, she got a new name and a dress.... A boiled egg is hard to beat. ... When you've seen one shopping center you've seen a mall.... Police were summoned to a day care center where a three-year-old was resisting a rest.... Did you hear about the fellow whose entire left side was cut off? He's all right now.... A bicycle can't stand alone; it's just two tired.... When a clock is hungry it goes back four seconds.... The guy who fell onto an upholstery machine is now fully recovered.... He had a photographic memory which was never developed.... When she saw her first strands of grey hair she thought she'd dye.... Acupuncture is a jab well done. That's the point of it. And finally: ... Those who get too big for their britches will be totally exposed in the end.

NATIONAL PARKS CANADA'S JEWELS IN THE CROWN

The Canadian national parks system began in November 1885, when an area of approximately 26 km2 on the northern slope of Sulphur Mountain was set aside for public use. This area, the Cave and Basin Hot Springs, was the beginning of what is now Banff National Park. The hot springs were discovered in 1883 by three railway employees working on the construction of the first transcontinental railway through the Rocky Mountains. There are now more than 40 national parks and national park re-serves in Canada. National park reserves are established in areas affected by unresolved and accepted by the Government of Can-ada for negotiation. These areas are designated to become na-tional parks, but the final boundaries and other terms will only be finalized upon the resolution of the land claims. National parks and reserves range from Quittinrpaaq , 660 km from the North Pole to Point Pelee at the southernmost tip of Canada's mainland; from Terra Nova on the east shore of Newfoundland to Gwaii Haanas on Haida Gwai (formerly known as the Queen Charlotte Islands).
