Die Wirkungsweise des Lawinenairbags beruht auf dem physikali-schen Prinzip der «inversen Segregation». Dieser Sortierungs effekt bewirkt, dass sich in einer sich gleichmässig bewegenden Masse von Teilchen die kleineren Partikel nach unten orientieren und die grösseren Partikel obenauf schwimmen. Der Lawinenairbag vergrössert das Volumen des Verunfallten und verstärkt diesen Effekt erheblich. Damit kann der Lawinenairbag den Körper an der Schneeoberfläche halten und somit eine Ganzverschüttung verhindern.

Dank der Grösse und Signalfarbe des Lawinenairbags ist eine schnelle Lokalisierung möglich.

The functioning of the avalanche airbag is based on the physical principle of “inverse segregation”. This sorting effect means that in an equally moving mass of particles, the smaller particles gravitate to the bottom while the larger ones rise to the surface. The avalanche airbag increases the wearer’s volume, significantly boosting this effect. The avalanche airbag can therefore help to keep the wearer’s body on the surface of the snow and thus prevent complete burial.

Das Mammut® Protection Airbag System ist die Weiterentwicklung des bekannten Snowpulse® Lifebag Systems. Die spezielle Airbagform und die ausgeklügelte Integration in die entsprechenden Rucksäcke sind einzigartig. Die Airbagform schützt den Kopf-, Nacken- und Brustbereich vor mechanischen Verletzungen und sorgt in der Lawine für eine optimale Position, indem sie den Kopf und Oberkörper an der Oberfläche hält. Der Protection Airbag kann daher nicht nur eine Ganzverschüttung verhindern, sondern bietet zusätzlichen Schutz vor mechanischen Verletzungen. Zusätzlich zu den sicherheitstechnischen Features ist es uns gelungen, das Airbag System vollständig herausnehmbar «removable» zu gestalten. Somit kann der Benutzer ein System für mehrere Rucksäcke verwenden und immer den geeignetsten Rucksack für den jeweiligen Einsatzbereich wählen.

The Mammut® Protection Airbag System is the newly developed version of the well-known Snowpulse® Lifebag System. The special shape of the airbag and its clever integration in different backpacks are unique features. The shape of the airbag protects the wearer’s head, neck and chest area from mechanical injuries and in the event of an avalanche ensures an optimal position by keeping the wearer’s head and upper body on the surface. The Protection Airbag can therefore not only help to prevent complete burial, it also offers additional protection from mechanical injuries. In addition to the safety features, we have succeeded in designing a completely „removable“ airbag system. This allows the user to swap one system between several backpacks, allowing him or her to always select the most suitable backpack for the relevant application.

Head on Top Technology

Die «Head on Top Technology» sorgt dafür, dass der Ver un - fallte in den meisten Fällen mit dem Rücken hangabwärts in sitzender Position, mit dem Kopf an der Schneeoberfläche zu liegen kommt. Dies ist die ideale Position, damit die Atemwege nicht vom Schnee bedeckt werden, wodurch die Erstickungsgefahr verringert wird. Hintergrund der Head on Top Technology ist die spezielle Form und Platzierung des Airbags. Das Hauptauftriebsvolumen des Airbags befindet sich um und über dem Kopf des Sportlers.

The „Head on Top Technology” ensures that in most cases the wearer comes to rest in a seated position with their back facing down the slope and their head on the surface of the snow. This is the ideal position since the respiratory tracts are not covered by snow, thus reducing the risk of suffocation. The background to the Head on Top Technology is the special shape and positioning of the airbag. The main buoyancy volume of the airbag is located around and above the wearer’s head.

Trauma Protection

Rund 20 % (differenziert nach Land und Saison) der Lawinentodesfälle sind auf Traumata zurückzuführen. Dies sind mechanische Verletzungen, die man sich beim Mitreissen in der Lawine zuzieht. Besonders in Gebieten unterhalb der Baumgrenze treten Traumata verstärkt auf. Häufig sind diese Verletzungen im Kopf-, Nacken- und Brustbereich. Gerade diese sehr empfindlichen Körper- zonen werden durch die spezielle Airbagform geschützt.

Trauma occurs with even greater frequency in areas below the tree line. These injuries are often in the head, neck and chest area. It is precisely these very sensitive areas of the body which are protected by the special shape of the airbag.

Das Airbagsystem lässt sich vom Benutzer selbstständig in den Rucksack ein- und ausbauen. Der Ein- und Ausbau dauert nur wenigen Minuten und ist einfach und sicher durchzuführen. So kann der Rucksack auch ohne Airbag-system für andere Aktivitäten verwendet werden.

Transferable

Das Protection Airbag System ist voll kompatibel zu allen Protection Airbag-Rucksäcken und kann zwischen den Rucksäcken gewechselt werden. Somit kann man immer den passenden Rucksacktyp für den jeweiligen Einsatz wählen. Z.B. einen kleinen 15 l Rucksack zum Freeriden oder einen 35 l Rucksack für grössere Touren

WICHTIG: Das Protection Airbag System kann nicht in einen Removable Airbag System-Rucksack eingebaut werden.

Removable

The user can independently install the airbag system in a backpack and remove it again as required. Installation or removal takes just a few minutes and the process is easy and safe to carry out. This allows the backpack to be used for other activities without the airbag system.

Transferable

The Protection Airbag System is completely compatible with all Protection Airbag backpacks and can be swapped between different backpacks. This allows you to always select the appropriate backpack type for the relevant application. For instance, a small 15 liter backpack for freeriding or a 35 liter backpack for larger tours.

IMPORTANT: The Protection Airbag System cannot be installed in a Removable Airbag System backpack.

For the Protection Airbag, the correct positioning of the backpack is vital since this determines the angle to the body at which the airbag deploys. The back height of all Protection Airbags can therefore be adapted to the user.

Das Verreisen mit einem Lawinenrucksack per Flugzeug führt immer wieder zu Problemen, da die für eine Auslösung erforderliche Druck- kartusche zu den Gefahrengütern zählt. Um dies zu vereinfachen, richtet Mammut weltweit Verleihstationen für Druckkartuschen ein.Sie können nun Ihren Urlaub in den Bergen antreten und müssen sich über die Beförderung ihres Lawinenrucksackes mit Druckkartusche keine Gedanken mehr machen. Sie lassen einfach Ihre persönliche Druckkartusche zu Hause, nehmen Ihren Lawinenrucksack im Flugzeug mit und leihen sich die nötige Kartusche vor Ort aus.

HINWEIS: Die kartuschen-Verleihstationen sind derzeit im Aufbau und werden ständig um weitere orte erweitert.

Taking an avalanche airbag with you on a flight always causes problems since the pressure cartridge required for its deployment is classed as a hazardous item. To make the situation easier, Mammut is setting up rental stations for pressure cartridges all over the world.You can now set off for your mountain vacation without having to worry about transporting your avalanche airbag and pressure cartridge. Simply leave your own pressure cartridge at home, take your avalanche backpack with you on the plane and rent the cartridge when you get there.

NOTe: The cartridges rental stations are currently only available at selected stores and will be constantly expanded to other locations.

The Removable Airbag System is a removable avalanche airbag system based on a square airbag that deploys behind the wearer’s head. The user can easily and safely install the airbag in the appropriate backpack and remove it again as required. One airbag system for different backpacks.

FuNkTIoNSWEISE DER AIRBAGSYSTEmE / Functioning oF the airbag SyStem

Beide Airbagsysteme funktionieren nach dem gleichen Prinzip. Die ein- zelnen Bauteile des Airbags sind identisch (Auslösemechanik, Venturi-Ventil, Auslösegriff, Druckkartusche). Unterschiedlich ist lediglich die Form des Ballons und die Befestigung im jeweiligen Rucksack. Durch Ziehen des Auslösegriffs wird die Auslösemechanik aktiviert. Die Mechanik öffnet die Druckkartusche und das freigesetzte Gas strömt über das Venturi-Ventil in den Airbag. Durch den Venturi-Effekt wird zusätzlich Umgebungs-luft in den Airbag befördert. Das Gas der Kartusche und die Umgebungs-luft generieren die 150 l des Airbags. Der gesamte Vorgang dauert je nach Temperatur und Höhe zirka drei Sekunden.

Bei der Entwicklung der Airbagsysteme wurde spezielles Augenmerk auf die Leichtbauweise und Platzbedarf genommen. Dadurch konnten das Gewicht und das Packvolumen stark reduziert werden.

Both airbag systems work according to the same principle. The individual components of the airbag are identical (deployment mechanism, Venturi valve, deployment handle, pressure cartridge). The only difference is the shape of the balloon and the attachment in the backpack. Pulling the deployment handle activates the deployment mechanism. The mechanism opens the pressure cartridge and the released gas flows through the Venturi valve into the airbag. The Venturi effect also draws ambient air into the airbag. The gas in the cartridge and the ambient air generate the 150 liters of the airbag. The entire process takes around three seconds depending on the temperature and height.
