R ishon Le Zion was founded on

July 31st 1882 by a small group of

immigrants from southern Russia.

Zamarin was founded on December 6th 1882

by immigrants from Romania. It was later

renamed Zichron Ya’acov, by Baron Edmond de

Rothschild (after his father, Baron James Jacob

de Rothschild). The first year was devoted to

experimental agriculture. Three of the founders

of Rishon Le Zion planted the first vineyards

in 1882 and a vineyard was also planted at

Zichron Ya’acov.

The new immigrants were without any

experience in agriculture and the first steps

were made without knowledge or guidance.

In spite of this, thanks to the hardiness of the

vine and a suitable climate, the vineyards were

an early success. This and the concurrent failure

to grow other crops successfully, was crucial in

deciding where the focus was to be in future.

The objective was that the farming villages

would be self sufficient, but in practice, this was

far from the reality. The costs were far greater

than planned, and the income was far lower than

expected. The financial situation was drastic.

Fortunately, Baron Edmond de Rothschild,

owner of Château Lafite in Bordeaux, was on hand

to provide financial assistance to the young farming villages.

The planting of vineyards increased,

using Mediterranean vines from

the South of France, like Carignan,

Grenache, Mourvèdre and Cinsault.

After the Baron’s first visit to ‘Eretz

Israel,’ (the Land of Israel), in 1887,

it was decided to concentrate on

viticulture. Much more land was purchased by the Baron,

with the express purpose of planting vineyards. At this

stage, the Baron favored using vines from the Bordeaux

region, like Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Cabernet

Franc. In order to bypass phylloxera, which damaged

vines throughout Europe and Palestine, the cuttings

were brought from India and were referred to as ‘the

Indian vines.’

There were internal disputes and various hurdles to be

overcome, but the Baron’s donations were generous

and most problems were solved. He ensured that the

very best consultants, agronomists and experts were

sent from France. At the same there was an ongoing

agricultural training program for the young farmers

and wine growers who were sent to the Mikveh Israel

Agricultural School. The best students were also sent to

France to further their knowledge. The equipment and

expertise were of international standards. The support

received was almost unlimited and no expense was
