  • The Present Continuous Tense always works with the verb To Be , so their structures are similar.

    Examples:

    I am a student. ( Simple Present with BE )

    I am studying languages. ( Present Continuous )

    Carmen isnt my friend. ( Simple Present with BE )

    She isnt talking to her friend. ( Present Continuous )

    We must conjugate the verbs in the -ING form (watch = watching).

  • SPELLING -ING FORM

    1.-Most verbs : look looking stay staying 2.-Verbs ending in - E: make making write writing 3.-Verbs ending in one vowel + one consonant ( one syllable

  • I am ( reading ) = Im ( reading )

    You are ( reading ) = Youre ( reading )

    They are ( reading ) = Theyre ( reading )

    We are ( reading ) = Were ( reading )

    She is ( reading ) = Shes ( reading )

    He is ( reading ) = Hes ( reading )

    It is ( reading ) = Its ( reading )

    PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE and THE VERB TO BE

  • AFFIRMATIVE SENTENCES

    Analyze the affirmative sentence below:

    My brother is cooking dinner right now.

    Well, as you have seen, affirmative sentences need: -SUBJECT -VERB TO BE ( am, is, are ) -An ING VERB -COMPLEMENT

  • AFFIRMATIVE SENTENCES

    Were eating lunch.

    I am watering the roses.

  • Negative sentences have the same grammatical structure as affirmative ones, but we need to add the word NOT after the verb To Be and before the main verb ( -ING verb ).

    She is not washing clothes. She is doing the dishes.

    NEGATIVE SENTENCES

  • NEGATIVE SENTENCES

    I am not playing with my ball.

    We arent dancing salsa music now.

  • In Interrogative Sentences we have to change the position between the subject and the verb

    To Be of the affirmative sentences.

    INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES

    I am running

    at this

    moment.

    Are you running

    at this moment ? No, Im not.

    AFFIRMATIVE

  • INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES

    Are they playing basketball ?

    No, they arent. They are playing musical

    instruments.

  • INFORMATION QUESTIONS

    En las diapositivas anteriores pudiste observar la estructura

    gramatical de oraciones interrogativas que podemos

    responder con Yes o con No, a este tipo de preguntas se les

    llama YES NO Questions. Pero en las preguntas de

    Informacin, tenemos que utilizar palabras de informacin,

    las mismas que sern utilizadas al inicio de la oracin

    interrogativa sumadas a la estructura de una pregunta

    de YES NO.

    What = Qu ?

    Where = Dnde ?

    Why = Por qu ?

    When = Cundo ?

    How = Cmo ?

    Who = Quin ?

  • INFORMATION QUESTIONS

    Examples:

    1.- A: What is your co-worker doing now?

    (Qu est haciendo tu compaero de trabajo ahora?)

    B: He is writing some documents.

    (l est escribiendo algunos documentos.)

    2.- A: Where are they swimming at this moment?

    (Dnde estn nadando ellos en este momento?)

    B: They are swimming in the new pool.

    (Ellos estn nadando en la piscina nueva.)

  • 3.- A: Why are you preparing coffee?

    (Por qu ests preparando caf?)

    B: Because I love it.

    (Porque me encanta.)

    4.- A: When is she coming home?

    (Cundo est viniendo ella?)

    B: Next Sunday.

    (El prximo domingo.)

    INFORMATION QUESTIONS

  • Si analizaste las oraciones habrs notado que la

    estructura de estas es la misma que hemos

    empleado para las preguntas de YES - NO, slo

    estamos agregando una palabra al inicio de la

    oracin, la cual corresponde a una pregunta de

    informacin.

    A: Where ?

    B: In his bedroom.

    INFORMATION QUESTIONS

    is he studying Maths

    Si observas la oracin del

    recuadro, te podrs dar cuenta

    que la estructura corresponde

    a un Yes No question, lo

    que significa que se

    puede responder con

    yes o no.

    Si a este Yes No question, le

    agregamos una palabra de

    informacin, como WHERE, se convierte

    en un Information Question, donde el

    objetivo es responder a esta palabra,

    lo que se cumple en la respuesta.

  • REMEMBER:

    Las formas de contraccin en el presente continuo son las mismas del verbo To Be.
