BA (Hons) Film & Video Production A. Programme Information

The Bachelor of Arts in Film and Video Production course is designed to give students the opportunity to explore the

full potential of digital cinema and provides professional practice to prepare learners for a career in the film Industry.

The BA (Hons) Film & Video Production programme is mounted in collaboration with Board of Investment Mauritius

(BOI) , Mauritius Film Development Corporation (MFDC) and the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation (MBC).

This three-year programme of study covers the different aspects of film production from pre-production phase to

post-production. During the first stages of the course, students will learn the essential video production skills from

scriptwriting to filming and editing. In upcoming stages, students will learn to refine and improve their film making

skills through film theory and the production process. By the end of the course students will have directed and

produced at least two short films and enhanced a video with special effects.

Job Prospects:

The recent increasing need of video content for the web & film industry provides new opportunities for the sector

of video and film production including Post-Production Editors, Technical Coordinators, Lighting Designers, Color

Graders, Digital Imaging technicians, Producers and Directors, amongst others.

B. Programme Aims

Digital technologies now offer opportunities for independent filmmakers to produce at lower costs for corporate

promotions, events and festivals. The recent increasing need of video content for the web & film industry provides

new opportunities for the sector of video and film Production. The aim of the programme is to:

Provide students with the necessary skills to work in film and video production sector;

To build and enforce student’s creativity and skills to produce high quality stories;

To provide an exposure to the environment and workflow of digital video allowing students to operate at

different levels from pre-production to post-production;

To develop and simulate student’s skills to direct and produce films;

To operate as entrepreneurs.

C. Programme Objectives

After successful completion of the Programme, the graduate will be able to:

Understand the whole workflow of digital film production from pre to post production;

Understand and apply the principles for creative scriptwriting and story telling;

Operate at post-production level for video editing, color grading, application of Special Effects (sfx) and sound

design;

Produce films, short videos and documentaries;

Handle and operate the camera properly during production phase;

Understand and work with lighting for different scenes and situations;

Understand and work with compositing and keying techniques like green screen for film production;

Understand, design and plan the integration of 3D Animation and Special Effects (sfx) in the digital video

workflow.

PART I - Regulations

D. General Entry Requirements

As per UTM’S Admissions Regulations, and ‘Admission to Programmes of Study at Degree Level’ or APL / APEL

requirements.

General Entry Requirements are not applicable for entry in short course. (Refer to section ‘M’ for additional

information).

E. Programme Entry Requirements

To enroll in programme, students should be equipped with their own Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera having

a minimum video recording capability of Full HD 1080p at 24 fps or more.

F. Programme Mode and Duration

Full Time: Min 3 years, Max 6 years (Min 6 semesters, Max 12 semesters)

Part Time: Min 4 years, Max 7 years (Min 8 semesters, Max 14 semesters)

Work placement will be carried out amongst others in one of the following:

Local film production companies.

Professional & Practical Exposure:

Students will have the opportunity to gain professional / practical exposure during film & video production with

local and international film producers.

H. Student Support and Guidance

Each cohort of the programme is allocated a Programme coordinator who acts as a liaison between the students and

school management and provides support for academic management of the programme.

1 credit = 15 hours

For the award of a Certificate, a minimum of 33 credits are required.

For the award of a Diploma, a minimum of 66 credits are required.

For the award of an Ordinary Degree, a minimum of 93 credits are required.

For the award of a Honours Degree a minimum of 102 credits are required.

Awards on the basis of accumulated credits may exceptionally be considered on a case to case basis.

K. Student Progress and Assessment

The programme is delivered mainly through lectures, tutorials, and practical sessions. Students are expected to be as autonomous as possible and activities may include reading research articles, delivering presentations, taking part in quizzes, case-studying, organize and participate in photo and/or video shooting sessions, amongst others. For the award of the Degree, all modules must be passed overall with passes in the examination, coursework and other forms of assessment. Each module carries 100 marks and unless otherwise specified will be assessed as follows:

Continuous assessment carry a minimum of 30% and a maximum of 50% of the total marks. Continuous assessment can be based on a combination of assignments, field study, workshops, surveys, practical and class tests;

Modules ‘Photography & Lighting’, ‘Cinematography I' , ‘Audiography’, 'Script Development', 'Cinematography

II', 'Visual Effects' and 'Makeup for film' will be assessed by 100% coursework. The coursework must consist

of at least one class test and two assignments;

Modules ‘Communication skills & Public performance', 'Costume Design', 'Film Direction', ‘Creative writing & storytelling’ and 'Production management' will be assessed by 100% coursework. The coursework must consist of at least two assessments.

The percentage mark at Level 1 contributes a 20% weighting towards the degree classification.

It is possible for applicants to enroll in one or more modules of the programme. Only modules currently on offer may

be considered for short course unless otherwise approved by the school. Students will not be allowed to accumulate

more than 32 credits under the short course mode of study unless approved otherwise by the school.

BFVP2106c: Cinematography II Understanding the 4k format, 4k camera, equipment and digital workflow. Composition and lighting, golden ratio, rule of third, choice of focal length. Working with key light and fill light. Matching the lighting conditions. Apply different compositing techniques, i.e. Green Screen & Keying techniques. Working with corner pinning & motion tracking. Working with miniature model and forced perspective. Stop motion. Understand camera movement. Integration of 3D objects and animations in workflow. BFVP2107c: Principles of Management & Entrepreneurship Identify the key management processes and role of managers in a Production environment. Understand the key skills required to manage project. BFVP2109c: Professional placement Students will have the opportunity to join an audio-visual production company or studio in Mauritius for a determined period of 2 – 3 months for hands on experience in the field. Alternatively, Students will have the opportunity to work in collaboration with the industry to create short videos, ads, documentary or films for specific target audience as requested by industry.

BFVP3101c: 3D Animation for film Introduction to Advanced animation. Mastering advanced 3D Animation types, Techniques and Tools. Advanced Design and Artistics. Further understanding of the 3D technical processes. Mastering body mechanics. 3D compositing and Integration. Tracking footage - 3D camera tracking. Stabilizing and matchmoving. Model, texture, light and animate 3D objects. Integration with other design tools.

BFVP3102c: Costume Design Understand how clothes create character and characterisation. Understand how to establish a visual style for the costumes. Roles of costume designer. Working with costume supervisors, makers tailors and wardrobe assistants to achieve goals. Introduction to designing costume - history, types of character, text analysis. cultural implication and decor. Critically review historical characters and periods to plan for costume. Designing makeup for characters. Application techniques.

BFVP3104c: Visual Effects Understand the use of Computer graphics and special effects in the digital video and film workflow. Understand and apply particle systems to videos projects. Simulate water caustics, fire, flame, dust particles from particles. Simulate rainfall, snowfall, explosion, glass shatter and other effects for video. Creation and integration of 3D objects and animation in video workflow. BFVP3105c: Digital Media & Online presence Understand and use raster and vector software effectively. Creation of stop motion using still images. Application of visual effects on still images for integration in a digital video workflow. Understand the different file formats used in the digital media industry. Animation of vector files and assets for use in video production. Integration of animation in a workflow. Basics of web design. Web authoring tools and publishing. Online monetization strategies and publishing videos for the web. BFVP3106c: Life skills & Good practices Employability development skills. Good Governance. Prevention of corruption. Personal development skills and role of youth in addressing societal challenges. Coping skills.Addressing Societal Challenges including Substance Abuse, Poverty, Climate Change, Social Media and Family problems. BFVP3107c: Audience Development & Marketing Basics of marketing. Monetisation in a digital landscape. BFVP3108c: Project Demonstration of core competencies acquired on the degree. Demonstration of creative acumen, self-management and self-development skills. Film & Video Production project can provide specific themes for a short film & video production of a duration on 26 mins. Project guidelines will be provided in the Project handbook.
