Backbone History, Traditions, and Leadership Lessons of Marine Corps NCOs Julia Dye
Noncommissioned officers stand as the backbone of the United States Marine Corps. The Corps is among the most lasting institutions in America, though few understand what makes it so strong and how that understanding can be applied effectively in today's world. In this insightful and thoroughly researched book, Julia Dye explores the cadre of noncommissioned officers that make up the Marine Corps' system of smallunit leadership. To help us better understand what makes these extraordinary men and women such effective leaders, Dye examines the fourteen leadership traits embraced by every NCO. These qualities including judgment, enthusiasm, determination, bearing, and unselfishnessare exemplified by men like Terry Anderson, the former Marine sergeant who spent nearly seven years as a hostage in Beirut, John Basilone, the hero of the Pacific, and many others. To assemble this extraordinary chronicle, Julia Dye interviewed Anderson and dozens of other Marines, mining a rich trove of historical and modern NCO heroes that comprise the Marine Corps' astonishing legacy, from its founding in 1775 to the present day.
Dr. Dye works as the Vice President and CFO of Warriors, Inc., the entertainment business's premiere military advising company, and is responsible for Human Resources and Administration; Planning, Training, and Operations; and Logistics. She is also the Editor in Chief of Warriors Publishing Group. On occasion, as the project warrants, she also acts as a unit commander. She began with Warriors on the film Starship Troopers, participating in Captain Dye's first coed extended boot camp in Hell's Half Acre, Wyoming, eventually commanding

She served as Adjutant on the maxiseries The Pacific for HBO, and is currently directing a documentary about Marine Corps Combat Correspondents, and last September the graphic novel Code Word: Geronimo that she cowrote with her husband, Captain Dale Dye, was released. Dustoff 73 Saving Lives Under Fire in Afghanistan Erik Sabiston
This book is for heroes. Dustoff 73 tells the true story of four unlikely heroes in the rugged mountains of Afghanistan, where medics are forced to descend on wires to reach the wounded and helicopter pilots must fight wind, weather, and enemy fire to pluck casualties from some of the world's most difficult combat arenas. Complete opposites thrown together, cut off, and outnumbered, Chief Warrant Officer Erik Sabiston and his flight crew answered the call in a race against time, not to take livesbut to save them. The concept of evacuating wounded soldiers by helicopter developed in the Korean War and became a staple during the war in Vietnam where heroic, unarmed chopper crews flew vital missions known to the grateful grunts on the ground as Dustoffs. The crew of Dustoff 73 carried on that heroic tradition, flying over a region that had seen scores of American casualties, known among veterans as the Valley of Death. At the end of Operation Hammer Down, they had rescued 14 soldiers, made three critical supply runs, recovered two soldiers killed in action, and nearly died. It took all of three days.
ERIK SABISTON grew up in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia before winding up living off the grid in the redwoods of Northern California. Naturally restless, he moved from one job to another working as a doortodoor salesman, music teacher, and even a butcher, until he eventually found his calling as a Soldier. He led his helicopter crew during a series of miraculous rescues on one of the most dangerous operations in the history of the war in Afghanistan. Erik also speaks nationwide at conferences, schools, and events, inspiring audiences to harness the power of faith and teamwork to push themselves beyond their own limits, survive the unthinkable, and achieve the impossible. He currently teaches the next generation of aviators to fly and fight in the UH60 Blackhawk helicopter. Home is wherever the Army sends him and his wife Tesswho still teases him about his fear of heights.
"You want to know what the phrase "courage under fire" is really all about? Read Erik Sabiston's Dustoff 73." John Weisman, 7Time New York Times bestselling author of "KBL" "A gripping and heartpounding tale of duty and near death for the chopper crew Dustoff 73 represents a war story of gallantry." Richmond Times Dispatch "Erik Sabiston and the crew of Dustoff 73 are realdeal American heroes." Scott MacTavish Author of Battle Ready & director of MURPH: The Protector "This is a great book! It puts you in the seat and offers an intimate look at the men and women who put it all on the line when troops are in need." Kevin Maurer, #1 NY Times bestselling author of "No Easy Day" "unsuccessfully fighting back tears as I listen to the Dustoff 73 crew" Arienne Thompson, USA Today "It's about time their story is told." Leslie Marshall, FOX News Channel & Nationally Syndicated Radio Columnist "I used to wonder who those angels were that flew into our most hellish moments in combat, those men and women who would risk everything to save us or at least return our dead. After reading Dustoff 73, now I know." MAJ (Ret.) Rusty Bradley Author, "Lions of Kandahar" "You guys are crazy!" Renee Montagne, NPR News "A brave, cool hand behind the stick by necessity, Sabiston also writes astutely, cutting his deck of dramariddled "cards" with slices of wry humor and truelife human interest. In doing so, he deals a winning hand." Vertical Magazine

Fahim Speaks A WarriorActor's Odyssey from Afghanistan to Hollywood and Back Michael Moffett, Fazli Fahim
Fahim Fazli is a man of two worlds: Afghanistan, the country of his birth, and America, the nation he adopted and learned to love. He's also a man who escaped oppression, found his dream profession, and then paid it all forward by returning to Afghanistan as an interpreter with the U.S. Marines. When Fahim speaks, the story he tells is harrowing, fascinating, and inspiring. Born and raised in Kabul, Fahim saw his country and family torn apart by revolution and civil war. Dodging Afghan authorities and informers with his father and brother, Fahim made his way across the border to Pakistan and then to America. After reuniting with his mother, sisters, and another brother, he moved to California with dreams of an acting career. After 15 turbulent years that included two unsuccessful arranged marriages to Afghan brides, he finally qualified for membership in the Screen Actors Guildand found true American love. Though Fahim's California life was happy and rewarding, he kept thinking about the battlefields of Afghanistan. Haunted by a desire to serve his adopted country, he became a combat linguist. While other interpreters opted for safe assignments, Fahim chose one of the most dangerous: working with the Leathernecks in embattled Helmand Province, where his outgoing personality and deep cultural understanding made him a favorite of both Marines and local Afghansand a pariah to the Taliban, who put a price on his head. Fahim Speaks is an inspiring story of perseverance and patriotismand of the special love that one man developed for his adopted country. A gold medal winner from the Military Writers Society of America

Small Arms of the Vietnam War A Photographic Study Dale Dye, Tom Laemlein
With modern military emphasis on whizbang weapons technology and the constant quest for things that make a bigger bang on the battlefield, it's easy to forget that at the dark heart of war stands an infantryman and his individual weapons. Those who understand warfare from research or from personal experience generally realize this about the conflicts that have plagued mankind since the dawn of time. Infantry weaponsoften referred to as small armshave fascinated soldiers and scholars for decades as they are the most personal aspects of combat. Small arms come into play when contact is close and potentially lethal. This was particularly true during the long, frustrating war in Vietnam, but much of the focus in studying that conflict has been either on aerial weaponsstrike aircraft or armed helicoptersor on the originally muchmaligned M16 rifle. There were huge numbers of other weapons used by both sides, but they are often ignored and rarely seen being used in combat action. This book solves that problem. Divided into easily digestible sections and preceded by cogent discussions of each weapon type, the authors have presented an intriguing collection of photographs that depict the primary small (and not so small) infantry arms most common on Vietnam battlefields. There are rare and stirring images here that depict what it was like to fight in the junglecovered mountains and in the rice paddies. Viewing these images is like studying a primer about one of America's longest and deadliest wars.
The son of a US 8th Infantry Division veteran who fought in Normandy, Brittany and Germany, Tom Laemlein has always been fascinated by weaponry. However, it wasn't until his thirties that he purchased his first carbine which was the start of his collecting career. It also set him on his path as a publisher of specialist titles aimed at weapon collectors and enthusiasts through the creation of Armor Plate Press. His most recent publishing successes have included the highly successful American Firepower Series. DALE DYE IS a Marine officer who rose through the ranks to retire as a Captain after 21 years of service in war and peace. He is a distinguished graduate of Missouri Military Academy who enlisted in the United States Marine Corps shortly after graduation. Sent to war in Southeast Asia, he served in Vietnam in 1965 and 1967 through 1970 surviving 31 major combat operations. Appointed a Warrant Officer in 1976, he later converted his commission and was a Captain when he deployed to Beirut, Lebanon with the Multinational Force in 198283. He served in a variety of assignments around the world and along the way attained a degree in English Literature from the University of Maryland. Following retirement from active duty in 1984, he spent time in Central America, reporting and training troops for guerrilla warfare in El Salvador, Honduras and Costa Rica. Upset with Hollywood's treatment of the American military, he went to Hollywood and established Warriors Inc., the preeminent military training and advisory service to the entertainment industry. He has worked on more than 50 movies and TV shows including several Academy Award and Emmy winning productions. He is a novelist, actor, director and show business innovator, who wanders between Los Angeles and Lockhart, Texas. The First Leathernecks A Combat History of the U.S. Marines from Inception to the Halls of Montezuma Don Burzynski, Charles Waterhouse
To mark the two hundredth anniversary of the War of 1812, author and noted historian Don Burzynski sheds some rare and exciting light on the part played by the nascent United States Marine Corps in that pivotal conflict and on their development in the turbulent years leading up to America's second war with Great Britain. There's not much in the official record of that time but Burzynski uses his passion and background to fill in the blanks and produce a stirring tale of the trials, errors and successes that led the Marine Corps's vaunted reputation as the worlds' premiere amphibious fighting force. It took two centuries to forge the modern Marine Corps, but it was the War of 1812 that set the Corps on the path to renown and established their high standards of dedication, loyalty and combat prowess. It was the Marines' accurate and devastating musketry coupled with their skill at manning cannon aboard the American warships of the period that resulted in victory at Lake Erie, Bladensburg, Baltimore and New Orleans. Despite their demonstrable value in those battles, success in combating the slave trade while serving at sea with the U.S. Navy, and their singular contribution in quashing piracy off the coasts of North Africa, the Marines were forced to fight for their survival on home turf. Burzynski accurately and interestingly covers the internecine wars of the period between Marines, their supporters and such luminaries of the time as President Andrew Jackson and other politicians who often sided with Admirals bound to disband the Corps. This untold story is an exciting, exhilarating tale of the most formative years of the United States Marine Corps. It goes a long and insightful way toward explaining how and why "Send in the Marines!" became a viable and reliable diplomatic ploy throughout the early years of American history.
Don Burzynski was a guest history columnist for the Marine Corps Times and Navy Times in Arlington. He has been a historian for 52 years starting as a reenactor in 1959, reliving the Civil War Centennial, the BiCentennial of the American Revolution and currently the BiCentennial of the War of 1812. He holds three Detroit EMMYs and two CLIOs for commercial concepts when he was a Creative Director/Producer in the advertising field. He has spoken and conducted research for The History Channel and has appeared in a number of their films. In 1996, he won the prestigious Magruder Award from the Marine Corps Historical Foundation for living history excellence. This is Don's first book on the U.S. Marines. He has begun a volume entitled "Sea Soldiers in the War of 1812." Colonel Charles H. Waterhouse USMC (Ret.) began his Marine Corps in 1943 as an enlisted man in the Marine Corps Reserves. Joining the 5th Marine Division FMF, he was present at the landing at Iwo Jima where he would eventually suffer injuries from enemy fire and earn a Purple Heart. In 1946, he left the Corps to pursue a degree in art at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts. After completing the degree in 1950, he worked as a professional artist for various print media outlets that included creating artwork for books, magazines and advertisements. In the late 1960's, Col Waterhouse served as a civilian combat artist in Vietnam, serving three tours as part of the Navy Art Program which eventually led to him accepting a special commission from the Marine Corps as a Major and as a combat artist for the Marine Corps Reserves. Col Waterhouse retired shortly after the Marine Corps promoted him to the rank of Colonel in 1992. He was awarded the title of "Artist in Residence," becoming the first and only person to earn such recognition. Col Waterhouse continued to document the rich history and culture of the Marine Corps through his art and embarked on a series of paintings chronicling Marine and Navy Medal of Honor recipients. Colonel Charles Waterhouse, USMCR, 89, passed away early on Saturday morning, Nov. 16, 2013, at the home of his daughter and soninlaw in Toms River, N.J.
"Finally a historian has written a long necessary public history of the U.S. Marine Corps....I predict that "The First Leathernecks" will become a valued tabletop resource for anyone interested in the War of 1812 for many years to come." Dr. Charles P. Neimeyer, Director and Chief, U.S. Marine Corps History Division
