    Baduk Terminology v0.18

    This version was released on July 21st, 2012.This is a work in progress, compiled from

    many online and offline sources by MarcelGrunauer, with help from Kim Byung-moon( ). There are still many things thatcant be right. For example, some terms havemultiple, partially conflicting, meanings, andthere are several terms for the same thing.Please send additions, corrections and com-ments to [email protected]. You can findthe latest version in the Downloads sectionof http://hanekomu.at my German-languageblog about Go.

    There are five sections: The first section,Baduk Terms, provides english translations

    for words and phrases often found in Koreanbaduk books. The second section, Baduk BookGuide, provides translations for titles of Ko-rean baduk books. The third section, BadukTitles and Events, lists the names of tourna-ments, titles and other important Baduk events.The fourth section, Player Names, lists thenames of korean (as well as other) players alongwith their romanizations. The last section, Ex-ample Phrases provides useful phrases to useon baduk servers or when speaking with yourKorean baduk friends.

    Entries are sorted according to hangeul al-

    phabetical order. Pronunciation for the hangeulterms is given according to the Revised Roman-ization, which was officially introduced by SouthKorean authorities in 2000.

    Note that [eo] is pronounced like the aw inthaw; [ae] like the a in bat; [j] like thedg in edge; [ch] like the aspirated ch in chop ;

    [eu] like the u in pull, but without the liprounding. Before [i], [s] (but not [ss])is pronouned sh. Double consonants are voice-less, not aspirated and more explosive than theirsingle counterparts.

    Language Notes

    Making nouns from verbs For many koreanverbs you can take the dictionary form (theone ending in - [da]) and replace the -

    with - [gi], thereby using the verb as anoun. For example, [baggwochida]to trade (verb); [baggwochigi] thetrading (noun). Therefore, if you see a wordending in - and you dont find it in thisdictionary, see if the corresponding - formis listed.

    Plural marker - [deul] is the particle forforming a plural. Only necessary if youexplicitly dont mean the singular; nor-mally, a noun can be singular and plu-ral, depending on the context. Examples:

    [dol] stone(s), [doldeul] stones;[chaek] book(s), [chaekdeul] books;

    [jeongseok] standard sequence(s),[jeongseokdeul] standard sequences.
