Bae In-sook

물질 공간 혹은 심리적 공간 안으로 침투한 색의 파장에 대하여

작가 배인숙의 작업을 보게 되면 색의 그라데이션(gradation)과 다양한 토운(tone)의 연결 그리고 두터운 색의 무게감에서 오는 미묘한 긴장감 속에 명상적이고 사색적인 분위기가 흐르

고 있음을 느끼게 된다. 이것은 1940~50년대 전후 미국의 색면 추상 회화(Color Field Abstraction)에서 보여지는 색의 면적에서 오는 느낌이나, 색을 구성하는 안료라는 물질 자체에서

의 느낌과 다르고 한국의 모노크롬 회화에서 보여지는 단색조의 마티에르에서 오는 느낌과도 다른 독특한 느낌인데 그것은 인간의 내면을 터치하는 파장과도 같은 것으로 배인숙의 작

업 역시 이러한 색채와 물질 그리고 이에 대한 심리적 경험에 관한 치밀한 조형적 연구이며, 표현형식에 대한 실험 보여진다.

물론 대부분의 색채 추상이나 색면 회화들이 심리적 신호가 내재되어 있는 것이 사실이다. 그러나 작가 배인숙은 이러한 색과 심리적 신호의 연결고리 사이에 현대미술에 있어 조형실험

의 중요한 주제가 있음을 발견하고 색이라는 조형적 표현 요소의 본질적 구조를 주목하여 이 조형 요소 자체를 자신의 회화적 주제 안으로 끌어 들여오고 있다. 그러나 ‘Into Space’

라는 그의 작업 명제에서 보여주듯 그가 특별히 주목하고자 하는 것은 색 자체가 아니라 공간이다. 왜 그런 것일까? 그것은 그가 이 작품 명제를 통해 기본적으로 인간이 색이라는 자극

을 경험하는 것이 공간이라는 프레임 안에서 이뤄지는 것임을 전제하고자 한 점에 그 이유가 있다. 파장이라는 것이 물결의 동심원에서 단위로 간극을 갖고 여러 겹으로 형성되어진 것

을 말하는 것처럼 지속적이거나 전면화된 색의 자극이 아닌 분절된 색의 자극을 주는 화면을 만들어 내는 것을 통해 이 간극들이 만들어내는 색채 자극이 어떠한 심리적 깊이감을 줄 수

있을 것인가에 대해 작가는 주목하고자 한 것이다.그래서 물감 층과 아크릴이라는 물질 층 간의 교차 속에서 투명하거나 불투명하고 혹은 반사되는 물질의 속성들이 만들어내는 색채의

떨림이나 빛으로 인한 굴절의 간극 사이에서 새로운 색채를 경험할 수 있도록 만들고, 단순한 캔바스 위의 페인팅에서 보여 지는 안료 자체의 파장이 아니라 색을 단위체로분절하여 간극

을 주는 과정을 통해 공간적으로 구축하고 이를 다시 빛의 파장을 분절하는 작업을 통해 예술작품에 있어서 일반적으로 표출되는 담론적 내러티브나 이로부터 파생되는의미보다는 작가

는 작품 기저에 흐르는 근원적 조형 문법 자체를 세밀히 점검하여 이를 인간의 감성을 자극하는 매커니즘으로 파악하고 이를 주제화하여 보여주고자 한다. 작가는 이를 통하여 마치 인간

이 어떻게 심리학적 깊이감 속으로 빠져들어가게 될 수 있는가를 작품으로 보여주고자 하는 것처럼 보이는데, 색채의 존재방식 혹은 전달방식이 어떠한 느낌과 심리적 사인(Sign)을 주

게 되는 가에 대하여, 색채를 투명한 막 속에 두거나 불투명한 색으로 물감이 만져질 듯한 마티에르로 보여주는 행위를 통해, 그리고 면적과 간격 사이에서 형성되는 다양한 색채의 변주

를 통해, 인간이 경험할 수 있는 시각적 기제를 만들어 내고자 하는 것이다.

결국 작가 배인숙은 인간 내면의 심리적 자극을 주는 색채 언어의 물질적 존재 방식을 보여주고, 다른 한편 단위 간격에서의 파장과 면적 단위에 따라 색다른 심리적 경험과 깊이를 느

낄 수 있음을 작업을 통해 보여주고자 하였다. 그리고 여기서 예술작품이 공간적으로 물질이라는 형식에 의해 어떻게 인간의 정서를 공명시키는가 하는 것을 마치 ‘대지 가운에 역사

적으로 축적된 지층의 층위’처럼 ‘공간이 시간적으로 축적되고 깊은 잔영으로 기억 속에 새겨지는 것’을 암시하는 듯한 겹쳐지고 오버랩된 색채적 환영(illusion)을 색채의 물질적

으로 존재방식에 따라 구축함으로써 회화에 있어서 색이라는 것의 본질적 의미를 환기시키고 이를 시각과 지각을 동시에 자극하도록 만드는 독특한 방식의 작업으로 보여 주고 있다.

About the Color Wavelength Permeating into Material or Psychological Space

The artist, Bae In-sook’s artwork evokes the sensitive tension in the connection of meditation and contemplative layers, the multiple tone, and the thick matiere with the

gradation of colors. In comparison to the sense of color field or the material of pigments in Color Field Abstraction in America about 1940-50s, and the monotone matiere

in Korean Monochrome Painting, it touches the different sense as the wavelength reflecting the inner mind of human beings. Bae In-sook’s artwork shows not only the

exquisite psychological experience of color, material, but also the experiments of the way of expression. It is true that the most of color abstract or color field paintings can

be implied the psychological sign. Bae In-sook brings the pictorial theme into her artistic elements focused on the substantial structure of formative expression of elements,

as the critical theme of formative experiment in contemporary art. As shown the thesis of artwork, ‘Into Space’, specially she focuses on not the color itself but the space.

The reasoning is based on the premise that basically human beings experience of the sense of colors in the frame of space.

Like the wavelength formatting many layers with the gap in the unit of concentric circle, it focuses on the certain psychological depth of color stimulation in the gaps through

making the segment of colors, not the consistent or completed colors. Therefore, in the exchange of layers of material of pigment and acrylic paint, the vibration of colors

can be made in transparent or opaque image, or attributes of reflective material, or experience of new color between the gaps of refraction of light. It builds the spatial

composition through the process of the gaps by the refraction of colors wavelength, not the wavelength of pigments revealed in the painting on a simple canvas.

In general, the artist would show the understanding of mechanism stimulating the sense of human by checking the basic formative grammar that based on the artworks,

rather than the meaning derived from the discourse narrative expression. It seems like to show the way how to enter into the psychological depth, which makes the visual

mechanism experiencing of the way how the certain sense or psychological sign exist or deliver colors through the action showing matiere. It can be possible to touch

the transparent or opaque pigments, and the multiple color variation formatting between the field and gaps. In eventual, the artist, Bae In-sook shows existing way of the

material color language evoking the psychological stimulation of inner mind of human beings. On the other hand, it shows the unusual psychological experience and depth

depends on the gap between the wavelengths in the unit of gap and surface. And, it implies the way how to vibrate human emotion in the form of material and spatial

way like being accumulated the layer of earth’s strata in history, signified that engraving in the memory building up the space in time. Above all, it evokes the substantial

meaning of color in art, by building up the overlapping illusion of colors in the material way of colors, showing the unique way stimulating the sense of sight and perception

at the same time.
