YESTERDAY, TODAY AND FOREVER - JESUS IS THE SAME!

Considering the changes that have taken place in our life over the past two-three years, or justlooking into this last year of world developments, one could say that enough has happened to compile a long life history! Yet, God in His wisdom gives us another year, 1992, to live and to serve Him.

Actually, GMRM with all of it ministries in Poland, Belarus (the new name for independentBelorussia), the Ukraine and Russia finds itself in the midst of these monumental changes takingplace in Europe. Ten years ago it started with Poland, then it went through the rest of the communistworld, and today all of the "evil Soviet Empire" is disintegrating.

What does it mean? Where is it taking us? What will be the outcome of this political and economical struggle? These are difficult questions and I believe that without God's help we will not resolvethem. However, as believing Christians we do know the final outcome of this spiritual struggle. Somebeautiful day Jesus will come again and, as the "Ruler of all creation," He will establish His long-anticipated "new world order" that our politicians are now only talking about.

Friends, this is an exciting period in spreading the Gospel of Christ. Each day we are reachingfurther into the world. Now it seems to be a true reality that, thanks to the advances of modern technology and the dedication of many believers, the whole world will soon hear that true peace and salvation come only through Jesus, God's only Son.

We firmly believe that radio is one of these technical devices given to us by God so that we mightreach the goal of fulfilling the demands of God's great commission yet in this generation. Millions ofpeople who were once deprived of hearing the Gospel because of a communist regime can now hearit freely. Our Christian programs are now broadcast over several radio stations in Poland. One localradio station has been given to our disposal for daily 24-hour operation. Belarusian National Radiohas invited us to participate in providing weekly broadcasting of the Gospel. Soon similar localarrangements will be made in the Ukraine. Working with local Christians, we are trying to develop anetwork of Christian broadcasts in each of these countries. Of course, to accomplish all of this weneed much more help. We need more local qualified people who would prepare and broadcast theseprograms. We need more funds and more prayer partners supporting us in this spiritual battle.

Lately we have been hearing much about economic relief programs to these former communistcountries. Our politicians and military are trying to save the deteriorating situation of theCommonwealth of Independent States of the old Russian empire. But can an evil empire be changedsimply by material means? No. Recent years have provided us with many opportunities to see that itis not a political or military struggle that make walls come down. • assures us of the final victory. Meanwhile, we do ask you, dear friends, to help us. We need moreBibles. We need more funds to sponsor local radio broadcasts. We need your prayers. 1992 will be acrucial year in the spiritual battle for the hearts and minds of Europe. Therefore, we do not hesitate toask you now to please be involved.

Looking into our 1991 involvements we can definitely say that It was a veryfruitful year forGlobalMissionary Radio Ministries. We completed it safely and debt-free. We managed to keep up with allof our Belarusian, Polish, Russian and Ukrainian radio commitments. We even expanded some ofour broadcast outreach by adding three local stations. We sent many Bibles and Christian books tochurches and individuals throughout the Commonwealth of Independent States. Betweenthree of ourmissionarieswe jointly spent over eight monthsofour time preaching, teaching and working on different radio projects in each country of our involvement. We were happy to see the beginning of thedevelopment of a major church project, with our mission involvement, in Minsk, Belarus the building of a Christian nursing home. In Ostruda, Poland, we were happy to see the completion of theMemorial Chapel-Barn at our Christian Youth Camp.

This is the new direction of our mission involvement for this year and for the future. Since there ismore freedom and opportunities for Christians in each one of these countries, we would like to workas close as possible with local churches, involving more local Christians in our radio and follow-upministry, thus working together with them in spreading the Gospel.

From our observation, people in these countries are now very responsive to the Gospel.Churches are growing. If we could only help them with some leadership, more resources, adequateequipment and even better facilities, then the work would explode in an even greater way. In thisrespect we are ready to assist them and we look forward optimistically to the future, for we know Whoholds it!

    THE WARSAW CHURCH CHALLENGE

Last year we spent a considerable amount of time with the Pulawska Street Church in Warsaw,Poland. This church houses one of our recording studios and is the very heart of our missionary outreach to East Europe. This is a very special congregation to us.

Many of our North American friends have visited this group of believers and discovered theirenthusiazm for reaching the lost for Christ. The Pulawska Street Church has always been a very hospitable and mission-minded congregation. I remember how during the years of communist oppression this church served as a stronghold of faith and a source of encouragement to others. During thistime I personally worked with this congregation as youth leader, evangelist, then later, as an assistant to the pastor. At that time, with the substantial help of this congregation, we were able.to start anew camp and youth ministry in Poland.Afew years later, throughthe initiative of this congregation'sleadership, the Correspondence Bible Seminary came into being. Then, during the early stages ofthe economic crises in the 1980's, this church led a large benevolent effort throughout Poland. Threeyears ago, under the skillful leadership of their minister, Andrew Bajenski, a new initiative was started, an evangelisticoutreach to unchurched communities surrounding Warsaw. Twenty-one weeks ofevangelistic tent meetings were conducted in twenty-one different communities. As a result of thiseffort, five new home churches have since been established and many good contacts have been leftin each of these places for continued personal evangelism. During 1991 this group of believers, withits home church outreach, has grown in number by 60 members.

  • IM At home base in Warsaw this group of over 250believers meets each Sunday and many timesthroughout the week in their extremely overcrowded

^ chapel on Pulawska Street. The church is unique inhli that it is composed mostly of new believers. Seventy^ five percent of the members are young people. Many

of them are students, thus, without employment andwithout strong Christian family background.

)cfj Perhaps some of you remember from our previ-publications that this church is now going through

^ 3building program. They are enlarging their presenti chapel facility located in a very crowded, old apart-

" /ns/de of unfinished chapel in Warsaw building. Last year we were happy to be able tosend them over $10,000 from designated church and

individual contributions for this project. Combining all of their own raised finances with contributionsgiven by others, the believers were able to lay the foundation, build the walls and enclose the newchapel with a roof just before the arrival of winter. Much of the construction work was done by theIndividual members . Now construction has had to stop due to lack of funds and high inflation inPoland.

We of GMRM recommend this project as one that is worthy of our and your support. We seegreat potential for the spread of the Gospel throughout Poland from this congregation. We told thechurch's leadership that we will do all we can to assist them and promote this project among ourfriends back in Canada and the USA. Dear friends, will you kindly consider the possibility of helpingthese hard-working Christians of the Pulawska Street Church in their present need.

To complete this Warsaw Church project the following Is needed:

    1) approximately $65,000 for the construction of the building2) a new heating and ventilation system

(the chapel is located between two walls of other buildings, thus making the installationof windows an impossibility)

    3) 400 chairs, a musical instrument (preferably an organ) and a public address system

Friends, it is certain that, on their own. the Warsaw congregation will not be able to complete thistremendous effort. It is heartening to know that the people themselves have raised a large portion offunds for material and put many man-hours of labor in the building's construction. They have doneand will do what they can. But they need further assistance-to see this project to its completion. Werecently received a long letter of appreciation from the church's eldership for all help and encouragement that has been given them throughout the years. At the same time they ask us to urgentlyhelp them in this time of economic crises. We prayerfully pass this challenge on to you, our friendsand supporters. We feel that we cannot allow for such an energetic witness for Christ to be diminished. If you feel so led of the Lord, do send in your contribution for this Warsaw Church project. Weare including a card that you may fill out and send in with yourcontribution. Or. if you cannot send ina contribution for this project at this time, please indicate on the enclosed card your willingness tosend it at a later date. This will mean so much to our Christian friends of the Pulawska Street Churchand to all of us. May God bless you for your generosity.

    BROADCASTING THE GOSPEL LOCALLY!

To be broadcasting Christian programs in the Soviet Union? Who would have thought that possible a couple of years ago? But today it is possible. Just imagine, for years we all prayed for Russiaand its allies to open up to the spread of the Gospel of Christ. And it happened. In fact, it happenedso quickly that, at first, we did not know how to handle this new set of circumstances. Those of uswho have lived in the West for a long time used the medium of shortwave radio as a main means ofbreaking through that East European "iron curtain." But today all of that has changed. We canarrange for the broadcasting of Christian programs over local stations throughout Russia, Belarus,Ukraine, Poland or any of the bygone "satellite" countries.

As God opens before us new opportunities for our greater involvement in those countries, weknow that it will not be easy, but the t^attle is not ours. Often we say it is our ministry for we are directly involved in it. The truth of the matter is that God himself is even more interested that the Gospel bepreached in those places. Thus, it is not just our ministry. It is his ministry. We are only his spokesmen as we represent the Lord Jesus to others.

Here in our Toronto GMRM office there are only three of us involved in broadcasting the Gospelmessage, but in Europe, where communism previously ruled over 300 million souls, people hungerfor nutritious spiritual food that will feed their starved souls and satisfy their craving for meaningful

    VOLUME 15 MARCH-APRIL 1992 NO. 2

  • spiritual values. This is an overwhelming task and we cannot accomplish it alone. We need morepeople, more sponsors and more finances.

In Poland we began expanding this ministry about two years ago. We helped estabtish two smallrecording studios one in the Gdansk church building, the other in the Warsaw church building. This is the place where George Bajenski spends part of his time when he is in Poland.Thu far wewere able to motivate and set apart two Christian men who are dedicated to this ministry. RyszardKobus, a son of a local minister in the Gdansk church, and another young man from the Warsawchurch, Jacek Slaby, who recently acquired a Master of Arts degree in Communications from RegentUniversity in the USA. There are other individuals and local pastors who help us in producing a variety of quality Christian programs in the Polish language. These broadcasts are placed on variouslocal radio stations within Poland. At the present time these programs are heard in Warsaw, Gdansk,Bialystok and Wroclaw.

One project that still needs further development is Radio Ostruda, or as it is now known,"Christian Radio 'l\/lazury'." When this station will be in full operation, it will become the first evangelical Christian radio station in Poland and in all of East Europe. We have received all permits and mostof the transmitting equipment is in place. What is needed now is more workers and, of course, morefinances to operate it. We could still use 5 more Christian workers, technicians, reporters who wouldwork with us on a full-time basis in Poland. We could find them, but we need to support them also. Atthe present time it takes a minimum of $300 monthly support in Poland. We would appreciate verymuch your partnership and help in this need.

But let's now get back to Gospel broadcasting in the republics of today's Commonwealth ofIndependent States (CIS) that replaced the USSR. What is GMRM doing in this part of the world?During George Bajenski's recent trip to the Republic of Belarus in December of 1991, he met withone broadcaster from the state-owned radio station in Miensk (the Belarusian form of "Minsk"). Thisradio worker knows the Christians of the Miensk Church and, through them, he knows us. He statedthat he and the station management are willing to have GMRM send its Belarusian program. GoodNews, weekly for broadcast over their republic's national network. We have already sent the first 2-month supply of programs and expect that when you receive the Crier, the program will have beenlaunched from Miensk. It will cover the whole territory of Belarus. What an opportunity!

This program holds special appeal for two reasons. First, it carries and explains the Gospel message. All CIS states feel a great lack of teaching on true morality. The communist system failed miserably in providing such direction. In reality, it created a moral vacuum. Christian broadcasts and literature are now beginning to fill this vacuum. Many officials in these states sense such a need and welcome anything that alleviates their given lack. Second, the question of nationality has arisen in eachstate, including Belarus. Hearing exposition of the Bible in Belarusian will be stimulating to many. Theprogram will undoubtedly hold great appeal to those who revere the Belarusian language highly. Many such people could be atheists, agnostics or of another faith and will attentively listen simplybecause the program is being conducted in a language cherished by them. We should add thatGeorge and Jacob Repetski who preach on the program do not deal with questions of nationalism orthe Belarusian language. They proclaim nothing but the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We believe that inthis venture we will gain many new listeners, including "casual" ones, because the program will comethrough loudlyand clearly over local stations. We hasten to add that this will not be free. GMRM mustpay the going rate of the day that should be in the area of $30 per broadcast. This amount canchange at any time and we expect that it will in the future. Another notable advantage is that letters ofresponse will be handled by local believers. They can follow up such new contacts and connect themwith local congregations for further instruction and spiritual nourishment. We believe that many willaccept Christ through this cooperative effort.

GMRM recently began sending the Good News program to one station in Poland. Many

  • Belarusians live in the city of Bialystok and in the surrounding region. They speak and teach theBelarusian language in their local schools. Bialystok serves as their cultural centre in Poland today.Brother Dmytr Wiazowski of Bielsk Podlaski very willingly agreed to distribute literature and visit people who respond to the program.

Anpther extremely important Slavic group that needs to hear the Gospel is the Ukrainian nation. We hear in our news reports that the Ukraine has taken its independent stand on many issues intalks with Russia and the rest of the CIS members. The Ukrainian language is making an evenstronger come-back than Belarusian in Belarus. Paul Diatel, our Ukrainian radio preacher, visited thatland during the spring of 1991. He established solid contacts with local believers in the Rovno andKovel areas. Steps have been taken to begin the broadcast of his Ukrainian program, Christ, theSaviour of the World, on a local station. Some final details need to be worked out and will be concluded in due course. With time local believers will participate with Brother Paul in the preparation andbroadcasting of the program.

You might be asking: but what about Russia? Is GMRM doing anything for the Russians? Yes, itis. We continue to prepare and broadcast the On Wings of Thought program. For the most part, it discusses apologetic themes for a populous that has been steeped in atheistic teaching and is only nowcoming out of it. The program is broadcast from various shortwave stations, the most important ofwhich is on the island of Saipan in the Pacific Ocean. We are now actively searching for a Russianpreacher or preachers in one of the Slavic states of CIS who will become our co-worker(s) in thepreparation of messages for our Russian program. Russian is spoken widely and, thus, we will continue broadcasting in this language. We would ask you to pray with us that we might find the rightperson or persons that could take this as their particular work for the Lord. As we travel in the statesof CIS during this year, we will be on the lookout for such personnel. This will mean that GMRM mustonly not broadcast their messages but also undergird them financially, at least to some extent.Russian programs can be broadcast both on shortwave or local AM stations. We wish to arrange forboth.

As you can see, we use local Christians for broadcasting purposes more and more. We are usinglocal preachers to record their messages for our programs. Also, we are making arrangements forsinging groups to record Christian hymns in various studios, such as Trans World Radio's studio inthe Belarusian city of Brest. These, too, will be used in the programs that we ourselves produce orwill have produced by others. In the future local believers will become involved in the actual production of programs. As opportunities and finances allow, these programs will be broadcast over localstations. This means that more local Christians will be doing the work itself and visiting those whorespond. GMRM must find people of God's choosing and provide them with proper electronic equipment for the job. It already has provided equipment for the studios in Poland. A substantial sum ofmoney was sent to Miensk for a radio studio. More personnel and equipment will be needed and wewill inform you about such necessities, as time rushes on.

We of GMRM look forward to maintaining our commitment to proclaim the Gospel of Christ bymeans of radio, also by other means. Today we have concentrated on this one aspect of our totaloutreach. We thank all who faithfully support us in this and other endeavors. We would wish to haveyour continued support for this "towering" ministry. It is our conviction that some day in heaven manywill come and say 'lhank you" for the broadcasts. But we will then point such loved ones to the hundreds and thousands, like you, who are our faithful supporters and say: 'Thank them, for it wasthrough their dedication and partnership with us that you heard the message and responded to it."And together we will worship and thank our Lord for giving us the ability and means to share hisGood News with those who needed to hear it. What a glorious day that will be. Thank you for caring!Thank you for sharing!

    OPEN DOORS!

Writing nearly two thousand years agoabout the great city of Ephesus, the apostlePaul tells us in 1 Corinthians 16:9: There is a

wide open door for me to preach and teachhere. So much is happening, but there are somany enemies" (Living Bible). How applicableare these words to cities and countries where

we preach the Gospel today.Poland, Russia, Belarus and the Ukraine

are close neighbours and for many years theywere sharing the tyranny of communism andatheism. Now, however, they have been miraculously awakened. They are free. So much ishappening. Doors for the Gospel are wideopen. However, it is too early yet to somehowcongratulate ourselves for, as Christians, weshould always remember that our struggle isnot against flesh and blood (Eph. 6:12). Paultells the Ephesians that although doors arewide open, yet 'Ihere are so many enemies."

Friends, the same is true as we consider

the East or Central Europe today.Communism, as the leading and ruling politicalforce of these countries, is out of power today, but sin and Satan is quite freely romping overthe land enjoying this freedom to the fullest.Greed and materialism, crime and immorality, religiosity instead of Christ and true religion Isblooming. Intolerance and ethnic strife is rising.I would even say that if things will continuedeveloping in this direction, soon Christianscould be singled out as an undesirable influence in society. Friends, we are sharing thissobering truth with you not to discourage you

from Involvement, but we would like to say itlike It is, so that all of us might be even moreon guard, for as Paul says: "Our struggle isIndeed against the spiritual forces of evil in theheavenly realm." We would like to ask you tointensify your effort in praying for and supporting this ministry.

As GMRM's mission involvement in the life

of these countries becomes more local, -

which means that our programs are broadcastover local radio stations and we work in closer

relations with churches and local Christian

leaders, - we are spending more of our time ineach of these countries. We feel now as

though we depend even more on you, ourfriends and supporters, as though we are carried on wings of your prayers.

As you know, during April and May GeorgeRepetski was in Belarus, Russia, Ukraine andPoland. He will be sharing with us in the nextissue of The Crier his comments and observa

tions taken during his trip. But now, just in afew days, Vera and I will be leaving for Polandand Belarus. We would appreciate yourprayers so that the Gospel presented throughus would be heard through radio and throughour personal life witness. We desire that manymight hear about Christ and accept Him astheir personal Lord and Saviour, for this is themain purpose of our existence.

  • ONE SUMMER SESSION OF OSTRUDA CAMPERS

    OUR VISION FOR THE SUMMER

What is important now in the work of theLord in Poland and other East European countries is the issue of time. Politically these arefree countries: people are freely expressing theirbeliefs, searching for answers and meaning inlife. Some find it in Christ, others keep wandering, experiencing all sorts of disappointments. Thus, it is very important to be close to themnow, to show them and teach them, reason withtheir intellect, love them and lead them to the

One who can satisfy their hunger before theirspiritual bankruptcy completely overwhelmsthem. We are personally looking forward tobeing with them now through most of the summer months, doing exactly that - making ourselves available to them and ministering to theirneeds. We'll be spending considerable timeworking with Andrew in evangelistic outreach inthe city of Warsaw and surrounding communities. We pray that throughout this summermonths the Warsaw Church will be able to com

plete the construction of their new chapel sothat already in September of this year we coulduse this enlarged worship facility.

One exciting development in relation to this"Warsaw Church Challenge" happened a coupleof months ago. In response to our initialannouncement of this project a church inBakersfield, California, donated a beautiful

Baldwin organ for this new chapel. Actually, right now this organ Is on its way to Poland. Thisgood news was received by us and the churchin Warsaw with much thanksgiving and joy inour hearts. Because of it there will be more

praise and more glory to our Heavenly King. Asmuch as the need of this church in Poland is still

real, we would sincerely encourage all who canhelp financially to complete this building projectin Warsaw to please send your contribution toGMRM's office and designate it for the "WarsawChurch." It wilt be put to use immediately andwill greatly encourage this young congregationin their service for the Lord.

Another exciting involvement for us duringthe summer in Poland is radio. We are alreadybroadcasting our Christian programs from fourlocal radio stations in Poland and now, as of

June 1, we are starting to broadcast daily messages of Good News to thousands from the cityof Ostruda and surrounding area. It is a bigundertaking and it demands much work andfinances, but the spiritual benefits of this ministry will be immeasurable. Eternity will tell usall. We ask you to commit yourself to pray forthis work in your daily moments of prayers.

As you might possibly remember, in the cityof Ostruda we are also involved in sponsoringand operating a Christian Youth Camp. Lastsummer about one thousand children and

young people from all over Poland took part inthe camp's program. There were also groups ofchildren from Belarus and the Ukraine for

whom, thanks to your contributions, we wereable to provide sponsorship for their coming tothe camp and participating in its program. Since the tragic death of our son, Benjamin, three years ago this simple decal taken from hisfavourite T-shirt Is a graphic reminder to us ofthe beautiful Scriptural truth that Jesus is coming back some day and it might be sooner thanmany of us would like to think. When the time isright, we will leave our shoes and everythingbehind and in a moment, in the twinkling ofan eye we will be with Jesus. Then I know wewill see each other again along with all of themembers of God's family. What exciting andhappy news! It motivates us to even greater service for the Lord. We like to share this with all

and encourage each one of our friends to befaithful to the Lord. As a matter of fact, we havedecided to use this logo as a symbol for ouroccasional letters of information relating to theongoing Benjamin Bajenski Memorial Fund.

At the present time the account of thismemorial fund has:

    950 Canadian dollars

    630 American dollars

To date we were able to help through thisfund in the following ways:

    1) with a partial scholarship for seven studentsfrom Poland and Russia who were studyingin different Christian colleges in Canada andin the United States.

    2) rebuilding and renovating the MemorialChapel from an old barn at the OstrudaChristian Youth Camp in Poland.

    3) with one time gifts designated for Christianservice for four young Christians fromCanada and the United States.

Now, as much as this summer of '92 con

cerns. we would also like to use some moneyfrom this fund to be able to sponsor a few morechildren and young people from Russian andPoland to take part in our Christian Youth Campin Ostruda, Poland. This is a difficult time formany families and, due to the much higher costof living (even in Poland and Russia), many children othenwise would not be able to be a part ofthe wonderful spiritual and educational experience that this camp provides. It is estimated thatduring this summer it will cost 75 dollars perperson for camp.

We invite you, dear friend, to take part inthis timely opportunity of sponsoring a youngperson from Russia or Poland for a just such anexperience of summer Christian camp inOstruda.

Your donation at this time to the

Benjamin Bajenski Memorial Fund will makesome young person very happy this summer. And we pray that this happiness in their lifewill not be short-lived, i. e. that it will be extend

ed not just for the summer, but for all of eternitybecause of what God will have done during thesummer camp season for them.

  • PRAISE THE LORD!

Following the short up-date on the BenjaminBajenski Memorial Fund, I think itappropriate toshare with you this testimony.

February 16th of this year fell on a Sunday.Itwas three years to the day of Benjamin's accident. On this day we were invited to be part of aspecial service held at Steeple Hill CommunityChurch in Pickering, Ontario, not far from wherewe used to live. During this service eight persons who previously committed their life toJesus were baptized. Truly itwas a 'Happy Day'even as one familiar hymn which is often sungduring such services reminded us.

But for us it was even more thrilling.Scripture teaches us that Heaven is rejoicingwhen even one person comes to the LordIPersonally now when I think about Heaven, Ithink about God and His angels and all themembers of God's family whom He gathersthere throughout the ages. What is so exciting isthe fact that we personally know so many ofthem. Actually, we do miss them, we continuetolove them and we look forward to being withthem. I believe occasions as this provide us withthe wonderful opportunity to be united withHeaven and together rejoice for what God hasdone for us through Jesus.

One of the persons baptized on this Sundaywas Erin, a good friend of Ben, a 12th gradestudent at O'Neill School for the PerformingArts. As Erin stepped intothe water, followed byher mother to also be baptized, she shared atestimony of her faith. Her simple yet inspiringwords brought tears of joy to many eyes. Erinsaid: "...I thought I had everything going for mein life good parents, a terrific brother, bighome, clothes, friends, pets, etc., but then I metBen who was very different and had somethingspecial that Iwanted." Benjamin was unique. Asothers said, he was a "Contemporary Christian."Although his life with us was so short, it was notwaisted. God can use the little seed as it fallsinto the ground and dies to produce many forHis glory. Praise the LordI John 12:24.

    RUSSIA AND BELARUS REVISITED

Dear Christian friends, we wish to thankthose of you who faithfully pray and supportus in our many-faceted ministries. I would liketo take this opportunity to relate to you someof my experiences while traveling recently InRussia and Belarus.

    A YOUNG VETERAN OF AFGHANISTAN

My trip started with a very lively discussion on the train that took me from War

saw, Poland, to Minsk, Belarus. A youngBelarusian sat In my compartment and wetalked most of the trip. He works in Warsawand was now returning to his family in Minskfor a short visit. Once he discovered that I am

a Christian worker, he immediately began todiscuss religious questions. I learned that, asan 18-year old boy, he was drafted into theSoviet Army and sent on a mission intoAfghanistan. He saw fighting and was forcedto shoot people that he did not want to. Theweight of that action lays heavily on his mindand heart. Although, as he stated, he did notreally believe in the existence of a loving God,he wondered whether God would forgive himfor shooting others. I assured him that Godcan and will if he but confess and ask for his

forgiveness."No. that just can't be; it's too simple. And,

anyhow, 1 don't believe that God really existsanyways. That's how I was taught."

I encouraged him to read the New

Testament, gave him a copy of one and presented him with Gospel tracts explaining howhe can find God and live for him. During thetrip he met someone in the corridor sellingbottles of vodka and bought one for himself.Perhaps, to be polite he Invited me to join himand, when I declined his offer, he went outand drank the whole thing. By the time hereturned to the compartment, it was obviousthat he was well under its influence. As we

came up to Minsk, I told him that within a couple of days I would be translating sermons intoRussian to be given by a Korean preacherfrom Seoul, Korea. I gave him the details ofour two evangelistic meetings which were totake place in one of the theatres of Minsk. Inever thought any of that information wouldreally register in the young man's mind. but. to

    EXPRESSING REPENTANCE AND FAITH IN

    CHRIST, ST PETERSBURG, RUSSIA

    VOLUME 15 JULY-AUGUST 1992 NO. 4

  • my greatest surprise, he, his wife and youngson came to the second meeting and heardthe preaching of God's Word. I pray that themessage that he and his family heard thatnight will have had its full effect. This showedme that many, like this young man, are seeking God but don't know where and to whom toturn for help and instruction. What a wide-open mission field exists in all of the CISstates!

    WITH OUR KOREAN FRIENDS

Having arrived in Minsk, I immediately hadto take another train to Moscow. This was for

the purpose of meeting our Korean Christianfriends from Seoul, Korea. We did, in fact, meet them and flew back to Minsk for a few

days. Two evangelistic meetings were scheduled with them and Brother Sam Hwan Kim as

the principle speaker. Our friends from theMinsk Church participated in various ways. They sold Christian books, handed out portions of the Bible to those who came to

observe and listen and their church choir presented an excellent concert of Christian songsprior to the preaching of God's Word. Thepresence of God's power in convicting menand women was keenly felt as scoresresponded to the invitation to come forward toexpress repentance and their desire to followin the footsteps of Christ. Our fellow brethrenin Minsk are now following up these new converts to Christ to establish them in the faith.

Our Christian friends in Minsk have begunto build a senior citizens' home and the

Korean believers were informed of the

project's latest developments. One bit of information that leaves a person sort of wonderingis the fact that in mid-April the cost of the project went up exactly double from 70 millionrubles to 140 million. Our brethren will have to

seek various sources to complete the project.I believe that it will be completed but it willrequire much more time than planned in at

TRANSLATING FOR BROTHER KIM (ONRIGHT), MINSK, BELARUS

first. The doubling in cost has come about asa result of the Belarusian government raisingthe prices of goods and services.

The Belarusian government had alsoimposed a new 28% tax on businesses, including church projects. Because ourKorean friends had sent humanitarian help Inthe past, they were able to visit the mayor ofMinsk and the second in command after the

president of the republic. I served as translatorin both instances. Our talks were polite and

amiable. The Belarusian officials thanked the

Korean group for their interest and special aidfor humanitarian causes. Brother Kim requested that the government seriously considercancelling the new tax on the church's seniorcitizens' building project. The governmentadministrators promised to give serious attention to this request.

From Minsk I flew with the group to St.Petersburg (formerly Leningrad). During ourflight to Leningrad I sat beside a Russian professional engineer who is working in the forestindustry located in the Russian tundra. Ourdiscussion centered around spiritual matters. Iam amazed at the willingness of the Russiansto talk about God, Christ and the Bible. Whata change from years gone by. and that is notall that long ago. My traveling partner listenedto me attentively as I spoke of the Gospel andChrist's power in the life of the believer. He

  • concluded by stating that he must give morecritical thought to the Gospel but to accept it atthis time would be too early. After all, for manyyears he had been steeped In atheism andthat fact had its toll. I left him with Christian

tracts. Pray for him that he may continue toseek the Lord and find him.

While in St. Petersburg I was again privileged to sen/e as translator for Brother Kim. Ishould add that he preached in Korean andour friend from the USA, Andrew Lee, translated into English. I then translated from Englishinto Russian. The Koreans have a Korean-

Russian church now operating in St.Petersburg and it is growing. Many who cameto the services indicated their desire to follow

Christ. We witnessed again the Lord workingin the hearts of searching souls. I was privileged to visit with our evangelical brethren inanother church in St. Petersburg and celebrate Easter together with them. During thecourse of their services people kept comingforward for their expression of repentance andacceptance of Jesus Christ as personal Saviorand Lord. This happens constantly in manycongregations in Russia these days.

    RETURN TO BELARUS

Following my stay in St. Petersburg Ireturned to Minsk by overnight train. My traveling partner In the compartment again provedto be both interesting and challenging. Yes,we did talk of the Lord. This time he turned out

to be a Russian entrepreneur trying to get abusiness into swing together with his commercial partners. I shared the Gospel with himand suggested that he should give seriousconsideration to his relationship with JesusChrist. He agreed with me that he should dosomething about that but at the moment hedid not have enough time for such matters. Igot him to read John 3:36 which speaks ofGod's wrath abiding upon those who do notbelieve and obey Christ.

    HANDING OUT LITERATURE PRIOR TO

    EVANGELISTIC MEETING, MINSK, BELARUS

"God's wrath abiding on me!" he blurtedout, "That's unfair. Why should God's wrathabide on me when I don't even know anythingabout him!"

"You wanted a reason for taking care ofthis matter, I've just given you one," I retorted."What assurance do you have that you'll liveto retirement age and then start thinking aboutspiritual matters?"

I left the gentleman with Christian tractsas an ongoing reminder to him to take care ofthe question of his personal salvation. Herewe have another individual in need of yourprayers, dear friends.

While in Minsk, I visited the offices of theBelarusian National Radio Network. I spokewith the head editor about the possibility ofhaving our Belarusian Good News aired overtheir republic's radio network. In a word, theirreaction was very positive. Their price, however, was too steep and I left telling them that Iwill contact them about a counter proposal.Since that time they have agreed to sell usradio time for $5 (US) a minute for the broadcasting of a 10-minute program from us. Thisis effective September 1. Praise the Lord!

  • The Bajenskis in Europe

George and Vera Bajenski are presentlyin Poland conducting and assisting in variousministries. Much of their time is being devotedto visiting congregations throughout the country. This includes involvement in the churchservices, but also they are visiting withChristians In their private homes. This hastaken them to larger cities and many smallervillages. Just recently George and Vera visited with the elderly in the Ostruda SeniorCitizens' Home and reported that this provedto be a most pleasant and blessed time bothfor them and the people in the home.

A week was spent in Germany for missionpurposes. While being there, they bought twokeyboards for Christians in the CIS. This wasdone upon request from Christians in thatcountry. George and Vera will be in Belarus inAugust and will take these instruments for acouple of churches. George will also be traveling with preachers from America inSeptember. While in Poland the Bajenskis willpurchase needed foodstuffs for Belarus whichwill, in due course, be picked up by ourbrethren from there.

Please remember them in your prayers. We thank you sincerely for your continuedprayer and financial support of us all duringthe summer months.

  • Year End Reflections

It is true that 1992 was unprecedented inall of its political and economic changes andin its outburst of religious life in Central andEast Europe. This especially became evidentin the new independent states of the old Soviet Empire. We have personally participatedand witnessed the preaching of the gospel inmany church buildings, parks, schools, prisons, theaters and sport arenas. We havewitnessed throughout the year hundreds ofpeople repenting, accepting the Lord andbeing baptized. It seems now after longyears of atheistic indoctrination and communist oppression most everyone in Old Russiawants to be a Christian!

Just this week a Toronto newspaper carried an article, "Soviet Honcho Gets Religion." It was a short report of the conversionand baptism of Eduard Shevardnadze, thelast significant foreign minister of the SovietUnion. Or a recent news update of a familiarwestern Christian organization announcingthe establishment of the "first baptistry manufacturing plant in the history of the SovietUnion" in Russia. Daily we hear some newand exciting, often disturbing, news fromabroad.

So, ending this year we want to say withrejoicing, we thank God for His faithfulness, power and love revealed to us in this generation. We praise Him for all good that happens, but at the same time we approachthese developments with some caution. Notall that takes place under this new freedomand general heading of spiritual revival isnecessarily good! Working closely with localChristians in these countries we are aware ofhow widely the seeds of materialism, strife, division and "non-scriptural Christianity" arebeing introduced to these vulnerable andspiritually hungry people.

Therefore, we pray for spiritual stability inour lives and in the lives of all those people

where the Gospel is preached today, that allof us will be wise and able to discern what is

from the Lord, for the days in which we liveare not necessarily called good days byScripture. The Lord Himself warns us aboutdeception of the last days (Matthew 24) andPaul also writes this so beautifully in his letter: "Dear brothers, you are not in the dark...For you are all children of the light and of theday and do not belong to darkness and night,so be on your guard not asleep like others.Watch for His return and stay sober."
