I don’t know about you, but every now and then I find that the final result of something that I set out to do is quite different to what I had anticipated and, in most cases, much better. I’m not sure if that’s the same for most people, but I’ve found that it often happens for me. Granted, it stems from a behaviour that I‘ve been working on, with moderate success, and that is to take action rather than to over-think a project I’m interested in, but it’s just uncanny how often the result has amazed me.

Three years ago, we decided to do a feature called Christmas Stars. I honestly can’t remember what sparked the idea, but I do remember the team talking about how many great people there are on the North Coast and that, instead of doing our regular business interview in the December edition, we should rather profile three extraordinary people that have stood out for us during the year. Their “extraordinariness” didn’t need to be super-heroic, but more in the form of actions that touched people or spoke to the community’s heart. It was a simple idea that wasn’t over-planned and we just made it happen.

This year I have been in awe of what our featured stars have accomplished and the sheer altruism of their actions. Each of our stars has achieved greater results than I think even they anticipated and, in their

humbleness, I think that they still aren’t aware of how positively they have impacted the community around them. The product of that idea, to simply profile three special people, has been inspiring and I hope that you enjoy reading about them.

Without realising it, I think that we’ve started another great idea. This edition sees us launch Seeds to Trees — the idea being to interview one new, local start-up and one established business to see how different, or not, the world of starting out is to that of a seasoned businessperson. This one works for me personally. I love this type of stuff and I can only hope that it’ll be as rewarding as our Christmas Stars feature — I think that it will be because it’s about local people living in a great community doing adventurous things and we know that “adventures are for the adventurous”!

As we close out the year and enter a new one filled with opportunity and promise, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a jubilant, fun-filled New Year. We love being part of the North Coast journey and we appreciate you sharing your stories with us. May the results at the end of 2014 exceed all your expectations and may you be blessed out of your boots and socks!

FACES FOR CHRISTMAS ON OUR COVER

@ Theballito

www.facebook.com/theballito

This is our second Faces for Christmas cover and we’re so very appreciative of the support shown by the people of Ballito and extremely honoured to be able to use our magazine cover for such a worthy cause. The way it works is that we sell 140 spaces on the cover to people to place a photo that is special to them. Every cent raised goes to Vision153, our partner charity who work tirelessly with widows and orphans on the North Coast, so that they can brings smiles to those most in need of it this Christmas. A very special thank you to Lorinda Scott and Lesley Forrest for their hard work and making it all come together.

riCardo mthemBu Better known in his role as Mayor of Kwadukuza, Ricardo Mthembu is also a North Coast local and has been diligently serving the community since he was a teenager. Before making politics his full-time job, Mayor Mthembu worked in marketing for Metro Rail, but nowadays he does what he loves — working hard to make a difference in the community that he grew up in, while balancing the demands of the community and politics with those of a loving wife and five amazing daughters. This is Ricardo Mthembu and this is his town.

Where is your favourite place to take a walk?I don’t have a specific favourite place, but I do like to walk around the old Ballito village, down by the Spar. I also enjoy walking when I get to play the occasional round of golf.

MY TOWN

Where is your favourite place to have lunch?I really like Beira Alta. Their seafood is fantastic and they have a great selection there. My favourite is their snap!

Where do you like to take the wife on a romantic night out?My wife loves going to Suncoast. There’s something special about us getting out of town (Ballito) and spending time looking over the city lights of Durban at night.

Which is the best beach in Ballito? While I like all the beaches, my favourite is Sheffield. It’s a neat beach and the waves make it easy to swim without being too rough.

What is your favourite shop in Ballito? There are two. I like shopping for clothes and enjoy finding a good pair of jeans, so I enjoy shopping at Mr Price or Edgars.

What is the favourite activity that Ballito offers you and your family?Ballito really has so many great activities, but the one that my family and I enjoy is the Mr Price Pro! We also really enjoyed the first Ballito Street Heroes this year, which was something really different but exciting.

Best spot in or around Ballito to relax when the weather’s good?I get to attend many social events as part of my job so, when I’m looking to relax, it’s normally in the estate where I live, around one of the dams or on the grass and, most importantly, with my wife and kids.

Than a BuildingBigger

that’s the church that I dream of and that’s the church I read of in the story.

Gone are the days of country club-style churches, with what seems to be a limited membership and a seemingly impossible set of rules to live by. Gone are the days of “check box” Christianity, Sunday soldiers looking for brownie points in heaven, but who disappear into the background of society Monday through Saturday. We’ve caught hold of something too exciting to shut up about and the good news is that everyone’s invited. That includes you!

The church is bigger than a building — it’s about people. People passionately pursuing life and living out all the potential that God has placed inside them.

Be inSpired!

the word “church” tends to have a very specific image attached to it: a mid-sized building with a tall steeple

— usually with a cross perched at the top, sometimes with a sign in front with some sort of cheesy message spelled out in plastic letters.

True story. Barely inspiring. I remember growing up in this sort of church, arriving on a Sunday to the sound of the bell, entering the church to the click of a counter (as though clocking in) and sitting in awkward silence before we were invited to sing the first hymn. With all due respect, yawn!

I remember reciting lines in a prayer book, kneeling at the altar to share communion and shaking the hand of the pastor as we left the building, as though to receive something heavenly (that’s if I made it to the end of the service).

But I’m grateful that I had a mom and dad who would teach me something of the true value of church — a people gripped by a message preached by the most inspiring person to ever walk this earth, and excited about living in a bigger reality than their own; a people who would journey together, sharing in each other’s joy and celebration but carrying each other in times of pain and suffering.

In a nutshell, I had grown up always associating church with a building. But the truth is that the church is so much bigger than a building — it’s about people. People so bold and colourful that cities would turn their heads and stare. People so full of enthusiasm and encouragement that visitors would flock to experience this irresistible community. People so generous that they would seem almost crazy. But

JAMES Pierpont's 1857 song Jingle Bells was first called One Horse Open Sleigh and was written for Thanksgiving.

Come Christmas time every year the same traditional ideas are drummed into our skulls, but I have discovered that there is actually a lot about Christmas that most of us don’t know — some of us even seem to have forgotten that the birth of Jesus is actually why we celebrate Christmas!

ChristmasThe Xmas rebuttal Ever have someone reprimand you for saying or writing the word “Xmas” instead of Christmas? Their so-called reason for this is that by doing so you are removing “Christ” and that therefore you are a heathen. False! For hundreds of years “X” represented “Christ” in religious writings. “X" is the Greek letter “chi”, the first letter of the Greek Chritos or Christ. So in reality Christmas and Xmas stand for exactly the same thing.

25 December Did you know that the Bible never actually says when Jesus was born? It was only in the 4th century that the Catholic Church decided to recognize Jesus’ birth with the Feast of the Nativity on December 25.

How did the Christmas elves come into it all?OK, so we know where Santa Clause is derived from — for those of you that don’t, it was St Nicholas, a fourth century pastor who was very generous — but have you ever wondered where the idea of Christmas elves (weird-eared small people) sprang from? Could it be St Nick’s cover-up for a child sweat factory? Happily not! In 1850, Louisa May Alcott completed (but never published) a book entitled Christmas Elves. It is believed that it is from this that the idea of elves working for Santa started circulating. In 1873 elves appeared on the cover of Godey’s Lady’s Book and became a mainstream idea.

Why do we hang funny thingamajigs on our Christmas trees?Until the early 1800s, people put nuts and fruit on their trees to signify that the winter season would not last forever. But, one year a sprightly German glassblower decided to blow glass bulbs and hang them on his tree. All of his friends and family thought they were the best thing since sliced-bread (if they had had sliced bread, of course) and started putting in their orders. And, as with every new invention, copycats were soon selling them everywhere and using them became a tradition around the world. Sadly, what had been a quality glass ornament is often now only colourful cardboard.

MANY parts of the Christmas tree can actually be eaten, with the needles being a good source of Vitamin C.

LONDON sweet-maker, Tom Smith, created the first Christmas crackers in 1847.

SANTA has different names around the world — Kriss Kringle in Germany, Le Befana in Italy, Pere Noël in France and Deushka Moroz (Grandfather Frost) in Russia.

SANTA Claus comes from a Dutch folk tale about Saint Nicholas, or Sinterklaas, who gave gifts on December 6.

“Excellence belongs to the Zealous”Open Days Friday 21 February from 09h00 – 14h00 and Saturday, 22 February 09h00 – 12h00

what does your daily job entail? At the moment I’m looking after the day-to-day running of the new Linc Church building project.

what would you say has been your greatest achievement this year?I’m a bit of sucker for infrastructure because it is an investment in the bigger picture, so it has to be the road from Sage to the end of Foxhill. So many lives will be transformed and a town can be changed by such simple projects.

what are you passionate about? I’m most passionate about the local church — it’s an irresistible community with a global expression!

Best advice you’ve ever been given? Not to take criticism from those who are sitting in the stands and are not in the arena.

what does your community mean to you and in what way do you give back to it? I love the North Coast and have entrenched myself in this community during the last 12 years. I’m on the leadership team of the most awesome church, called Linc, and I’m on the board of an exciting new initiative, called Hearts that Hope, which is a great children’s home. You can check it out at heartsthathope.com.

what inspires you?I’m inspired by pockets of excellence, so anyone doing anything really well inspires me! And fun — man, if I’m not having fun, I feel as if I’m having the life sucked out of me.

how do you unwind in this amazing place called Ballito?I have the most amazing wife and two radical little boys and, as anyone who has young kids knows, they need space. So the beach is always a winner.

In a departure from our usual interview with a local businessperson, this month we profile and pay tribute to three people in Ballito who, we believe, have stood out and made a difference in the past year. All three of our profiled stars exude their own sort of magic and energy, which at this time of the year is synonymous with the Christmas spirit and the joys of the festive season.

If you live for the praise of man, you’ll die by their criticism as well!Pastor Carl Lentz of Hillsong New York City

what does your daily job entail?I’m proud to say that I work for the iLembe Chamber. My job description is vast and includes member liaison, assisting with co-ordinating events, forums and projects, admin duties etc.

what has been your greatest achievement this year?Excelling at all my goals, studying part-time, attending events, running projects and fundraising for charity — I think that it’s an amazing achievement to be a productive “busy” person. I am a fighter and I will never quench a flame before the fire has burnt out. what are you passionate about? My boundless faith in God. My loved ones. I have many passions about life, love, learning, goals, aspirations, my pets, health, talent, beauty and hope. My heart goes into everything that I do and say. Best advice you’ve ever been given? When I fall asleep at night to know that I will be able to live with my choices, be proud of my actions, share them with God and know that I’ve done my best, no matter what the circumstances. This was given to me by my mom — she has given me an appreciation for the little beauties of life. what does your community mean to you and in what way do you give back to it? I love Ballito — I love how, from the poorest to the richest, I have discovered warm, supportive, phenomenal people who uplift, encourage and inspire. I am actively involved in numerous fundraising initiatives — this year I donated to the Rotary Club Zimbali, the Feral Feline Fund and also to gifts for social workers. My work at the iLembe Chamber also has a direct impact on our community.

what inspires you?Survivors! From surviving the most complicated battles like cancer, poverty, loss, sickness and pain, to surviving inner battles and contending with Life itself. Life is tough and it’s the people that survive with grace, do good and fight for what is right that inspire me.

how do you unwind in this amazing place called Ballito?Walking along the beach, feeling the sand between my toes! Cinnamon and Silk’s marshmallow fudge latte is a must-stop with my mom on a Sunday after church; and also relaxing at La Montagne

what does your daily job entail?Since my retirement at age 55 I have assisted many businesses primarily as a Marketing/Business consultant. I enjoyed using my experience to help others. I met Trenley Tilbrook CEO of the iLembe Chamber of Commerce (ICCT) who invited me to join the Mentorship panel when it started three years ago.

what would you say has been your greatest achievement this year? The team of ICCT mentors have bonded to form a great group of very talented “grey haired” senior executives who are happy to share their vast experience.

what are you passionate about?Helping others! Committed to empowering young business ENTREPRENEURS.

Best advice you’ve ever been given? My old god-father told me when I was a cocky successful young man driving a Mercedes at age 26, “The bigger you become the humbler you become because you will always need people to succeed”.

what does your community mean to you and in what way do you give back to it? Innovation and the ability to conceptualise and make a meaningful difference. “Differentiate or Die”.

what inspires you?The new world of work encourages the entrepreneurial mind-set, in that we need to learn to use our imagination to dream up new ideas, challenge assumptions and belief systems to find a better way, and break through worn-out thinking to create new and innovative products and services. This way of thinking is helpful whether you are working for yourself or someone else.

how do you unwind in this amazing place called Ballito?Enjoy the ocean, family, friends and grand children.

tell us a little bit about yourself.I am a very happy-go-lucky girl who has inherited a love for beautiful things from my mom. I try to find beauty in everything and always work towards “being the change I want to see” — it’s a work in progress.

how long have you been a photographer? I’ve always had an interest in photography and started doing it professionally about a year ago.

what or who got you started in photography and did you study? It was some gentle prodding from family and friends to explore photography that initially got me started and I would love to go on some proper courses, but I haven’t got around to it yet — I’ve always learnt better in the field rather than in a classroom. If I get stuck, I have some great photography contacts who I can turn to for advice and that has served me well so far — as with most things, the learning never ends!

what gives you ideas or inspires you to create your imagery? My biggest inspiration is the beauty I see around me every day and, living in KZN, I am surrounded by beauty. If I come up short on ideas, I “follow” some of the best photographers around — seeing their pictures come up in my news feed always makes me feel inspired.

how would you describe your style? I do enjoy doing “staged” photo shoots, but my passion is for natural lifestyle photography — I love to simply capture moments, whether it is a family day at the beach, a high tea, a lunch, or just an afternoon at home. I don’t think anything beats natural lifestyle photography!

what type of cameras do you shoot with? Most recently I have been using a Canon 7D.

why did you choose to specialise in this particular genre? It is the genre that gives me the most work-satisfaction. I love all genres of photography and in my free time I try and explore other genres, but so far lifestyle photography is the one I enjoy the most.

how important is photoshop in your final images? Photoshop is very important but I use Lightroom a lot more than Photoshop.

who is your idol in the industry and how has he helped shape your photographic style? I haven’t managed to settle for one role model yet. There are so many photographers who are just brilliant and they’ve each got their own style and I can’t decide on any one favourite style.

destination you’ve always wanted to shoot at? I am in love with Paris. I don’t have a specific location in Paris (obviously the Eiffel Tower features somewhere) but there’s something magical about the city and it has so many amazing locations.

describe the ideal conditions that help to get a great shot? It’s all about attitude. Nothing speaks louder than attitude when it comes to photography and if someone is feeling uncomfortable in any way, it shows in the pictures.

Real

ChristmasFor the first time ever, Fabmags

decided to host a Christmas table and invite a few special people from the

community to sit around it. what we really wanted was a real Christmas experience, so Justin and i spoke to our good friends, Jackie and owen williams, from hotel izulu and asked them if they would “do” a Christmas table for us. Jackie loves cooking, loves entertaining people and, in her book, a party is always a good thing! there was an immediate “Yes!” from her to open her home to The Ballito and friends.

We are very blessed in our small community to be able to come up with an idea and have businesses support it the way that they do. We spoke to Tessa and Samantha from the liFeStYle Centre, who immediately came on board. Samantha then recruited people from amongst the tenants who would be willing to be a small part of our Christmas lunch — we are extremely grateful! With the assistance of Spar, who eagerly accepted the challenge, we decided on a FAB-U-lOUS African Christmas menu. Thank you so much, Seelan and the Spar team — thanks to you we had the most amazing meal! Another important contributor was topS because, when you are at a function at the Williams’ home, festive drinks are hugely significant, so thank you to lorraine and her team. Everyone really enjoyed the various wines and oohed and aahed at each stage of the dinner...

A huge thank you must also go to the amazing Chantelle from etiQuette, who brought two waiters to serve our guests and make sure that the afternoon went off without a hitch, with the drinks, food and clean-up moving at the perfect pace. Chantelle even went so far as to carve the turkey! We were very blessed that o la la came on board with table decor and gifts for our goodie bags. originS gave us the most beautiful handmade silver and red stars. CranBerrieS supplied

Thank you, too, to Cna for the Christmas crackers and the lifestyle Centre management for the lifestyle goodie bags, candy canes and chocolates. Olivia from Solo chocolates also added slabs of various delicious chocolates to the goodie bags.

Around the table there was a varied bunch of locals, including Marc Forrest, our regular gadget guru, Olivia and Wim from

Palm lakes Estate, with whom we do a lot of work, Joanne from Fairmont Zimbali, Schane from O la la, Jenni Rivett, who is another trusty contributor to our magazine, and her hubby Freddie Seward, and, of course, our awesome hosts, Jackie and Owen, as well as some of the staff from the FabMags team.

what drives someone to become a firefighter? Firefighters are born — they are not made. The majority of us who become firefighters do it because we have an inherent need to help others, a passion for it and, of course, a few screws loose! Being a firefighter gives you a sense of pride in the fact that you are at the heart of the community and that you are able to make a difference — it’s an unimaginable feeling.

Biggest misconception about firefighters?A lot of people think that all we do is put out fires, but you’d be surprised at how much we actually do — extraction of injured people, cutting open cars, medical and aquatic rescue and high-angle rescue.

on average, how many emergency situations do you attend per day?Currently —out of season — we attend about two calls on a good day, but sometimes it goes up to five or six.

Anash Naidoo, Leading Fireman

featUre

Ballito

Ballito’s rEal

hEroEsI have always appreciated and admired those who put their lives on the line to protect our communities — it takes a selfless and extremely level-headed person to do what these people do. They know what a genuinely bad day really looks like and yet they wake up every day and go back to work to do what they do best — save lives! These brave people are a gift to our town, a gift that so often goes unopened or unappreciated! With the often harrowing holiday season upon us, we thought it only right to extend our appreciation to the EMS providers in our town for their hard work and dedication to their community as we find out what life is like for a hero!

Most memorable emergency situation? Most recently what comes to mind is the terrible accident that happened on the M4 during those heavy rains, when a police van and a BMW were involved in a head-on collision. I won’t go into details, but for most of us who were on call, it was a real eye-opener about how fast things can happen.

What is the relationship between paramedics and firefighters like?Firefighters remove people from potentially life-threatening situations and then the medics make sure that those people are kept alive and transported to the nearest hospital to receive the necessary treatment. We work extremely closely together and run like a well-oiled machine because, without one or the other, a lot more lives would be lost.

When you’re not out on the streets, what are you doing? Brigade Order Sixty-One is a schedule

of things that have to be done every day. We maintain the equipment to make sure that everything is in working order. We do training and risk-assessments for fire prevention, and topography of the area we service. We also have to rest in order to be mentally and physically fit.

What do you love about your community? We love the fact that they understand that if we are driving along with sirens blaring they should immediately move over, no matter what, because one day it could be them that we need to get to. Thanks, Ballito!

Number one safety tip for your community?Burning rubbish in your backyard is a sure-fire way to start a fire and it’s illegal. But perhaps the most important is to drive within the speed limit and to drive as if your life depends on it, because it does, especially during rainy weather. You are not only putting your life in danger — you are

putting the lives of everyone around you in danger! We cannot stress this enough!

What do you love about your job? There is an adrenaline rush in this type of job. No two days are ever the same, so you have to always be on your toes. But the most rewarding feeling is to know that you have saved a life — it’s an indescribable feeling that outweighs even the most negative of feelings.

How do you handle the emotional side of it? It makes you a bit hard and strong, but I guess you get used to it. Seeing innocent children die is probably the hardest part of it and it takes a piece out of you every time, but it teaches you to respect life and what you have, so that every time you go home you really show your family how much they mean to you.

What drives someone to become a lifeguard?I think that some people have an inherent need to help others and that drives people to go into a career that involves risking your life to save someone else’s. Personally, I knew this was my calling at the age of nine. I was introduced to the ocean at a very early age when I started as a Nipper with the Lifesaving Club and fell in love with all that it involves.

What type of person is suited to becoming a lifeguard? You have to be very tolerant, your communication skills have to be top notch — the less that people understand you, the more easily accidents can happen. You have to have a deep respect and love for the ocean.

Number one tip for beach users? In the end, we are only human and cannot have our eyes on everything at once, so we urge you, as a beach user, to take responsibility for your own safety and that of your children. Know your emergency number — 032 946 2711 — and never forget that if you knowingly put your life at risk, you are putting the life of one

Bongani Xulu, Head Lifeguard for Kwadukuza

of us at risk because it’s our duty to save you, no matter what. Finally, it’s important to make yourself familiar with beach rules and regulations.

What’s the most common emergency situation that you find on our beaches? When people don’t listen and venture to close to restricted areas, get caught in a riptide and start to panic. This immediately makes the victim lose energy and can lead to drowning. Our coastline is quite unprotected and we therefore have much bigger waves and stronger shore breaks, which can lead to a lot of fractures. Lifeguards are there to keep you safe, not to put a damper on your day! If we tell you not to do something, it’s because we know that you could be hurt.

How do you prepare yourself mentally for a rescue?Lifeguards have to be extremely quick-thinkers as you really don’t have the time to think about things in an emergency. You are purely fuelled by adrenaline and you just let your training and instincts take over.

Ballito

Are the lifeguards in Ballito valued as much as they should be?I think that if a person has been saved by a lifeguard then they and the people close to them will have more respect for what we do than someone whom we haven’t directly or indirectly helped. But I do think that the community feels safer knowing that we are there.

If someone’s drowning and there’s a shark in the water, what do you do?The patient is the priority, no matter what we have to go out. Fortunately we have other things to utilise than only paddles, so we can use the boat or jet ski and things like that.

How do you deal with the bad days?Having been in this career for as long as I have, you are unfortunately sure to have been faced with things like drownings. A drowning is probably the worst problem we face because I always end up thinking about what I could possibly have done better to save that person’s life. It’s something that you never really get over. Most of us are fathers, so seeing a child drown takes a really big chunk of your heart. 032 586 1100 / 032 946 0424

How many calls on average do you answer in a week? At our base, we answer approximately 100 calls per week.

What do you love about your job? It is a privilege for my team and me to be able to touch people’s lives in a meaningful way and make a difference in the community through caring for the sick and injured. We are a highly-motivated team and have committed ourselves to living the Netcare Way, by embracing Netcare’s values of care, dignity, participation, truth and passion.

How do you prepare yourselves each time for what you are about to see? As paramedics, we are mentally prepared for any emergency because of our training and the constant support from colleagues. It becomes a way of life and not just a job. We also do pre-scenario-based preparation

Shaun Paul, Operations Manager at Netcare 911’s base at Netcare Alberlito

so that when we are called for assistance, our response becomes very streamlined. Everyone knows their role and it’s like a puzzle fitting together perfectly in the event of any emergency.

What are the different levels of emergency? We use lights and sirens when responding to all life-threatening emergencies, for example in the case of motor vehicle accidents, gunshot wounds, cardio-respiratory arrest or when someone experiences breathing difficulties.

What is the fundamental difference between Netcare 911 paramedics and a doctor or nurse? We, as pre-hospital emergency medical specialists, provide the first line of care from the scene of an accident or incident to the medical facility, where the patient will

be handed over to the receiving doctor and nursing staff in the emergency department. We all work as a team and the trauma doctor and nursing staff play a huge role in the outcome for the patient.

Do you ever become immune to seeing really bad accidents? One can never be immune to suffering, especially when it involves children or critically injured persons. Although we come across these cases regularly and have to focus on doing our job, we always have compassion.

What is the essence of emergency medicine? The essence is quick and sound assessment by paramedics, stabilisation at different levels of care ranging from basic life support to advanced life support, and

rapid transportation by road or air to an appropriate medical facility.

What fundamental equipment do you have to have on every call? In the case of a life-threatening emergency, we need a fully-equipped ambulance and rapid response vehicle. The ambulance needs to have advanced airway management equipment, portable oxygen, a cardiac monitor and a response jump bag.

What type of person do you have to be to have a career in this field? To become a paramedic, an individual has to be compassionate, caring and committed. It may sound clichéd, but being a paramedic is not just a profession or a career — it is a calling.

Do you think your community is supportive and do you feel valued by them? We do get a lot of support from Ballito

residents. It is the, “Thank you”, “God bless you”, “You guys are amazing” and “You are so caring,” comments which make our job even more rewarding. However, we also welcome feedback that is not so favourable so that we can improve our service where necessary.

What is the best thing about your community? We value their support greatly and it is wonderful when we receive thank-you letters from the public. It is also great when we meet with fully-recovered patients who we have treated. We have formed strong friendships within our community and are well supported by the auxiliary emergency services like the KwaDukuza Fire and Rescue, South African Police Service Umhlali, Umhlali K9 and the traffic department, all of which contribute to the successful treatment of patients.

Boss Lady and multi-tasker extraordinaire! Mom of 4 (including husband), she’s super organised and the reason why there is a Ballito Magazine!

What is your nickname? At the office Boss Lady is the favourite..

What is your guilty pleasure? All food... but potatoes — copious amounts of them — are my downfall.

What don’t people know about you? For a business owner, I’m not very business-minded but I am people-minded. I love to invest in my staff and our magazines — each story is special to us and has meaning behind it.

Daniel is the very single designer for The Umhlanga Magazine, the longest standing staff member and resident prankster.

What is your nickname? Take me for coffee and I’ll tell you.

What is your guilty pleasure? Being naughty!

What don’t people know about you? I get a kick out of farting while standing in a crowd.

Cartoon Character alter ego?Shrek! Any guy like that who could win the heart of a princess is a hero in my book.

Immortal for a day? What would you do? Go bungee-jumping without a rope.

The best part of waking up is? When you don’t have a hangover.

What are your pet peeves? When I cannot make out whether a person is a male or female.

Unique or quirky habit?I like telling true lies.

If you were reincarnated as an animal what would it be? Lion (prefer to stick on the top of the food chain).

So where is Waldo? Buried in my backyard.

Super-hero alter ego?It would have to be someone with multiple arms, multiple faces, much like a working Mom. Yes!

Immortal for a day? What would you do? I’d travel like a vampire.... go everywhere on the planet.

The best part of waking up is? The cool breeze and the bright sun, a cup of tea on my patio with my favourite peeps in the whole wide world.... BLISS!

What are your pet peeves? My biggest bugbear is cell phones. Why people believe that they have to drive and be on their phones, especially with their kids in the car, I don’t know. Oh, and clicking pens or fidgeting drives me up the wall!

Unique or quirky habit?I love writing with my pencil. Another is that the last bite on my plate has to be the same as the first, so imagine the freak-out when the last potato gets stolen!

If you were reincarnated as an ice cream flavour, what would it be? Definitely Mint Chip — plain, good colour, refreshing with that bit of surprise on the side.

So where is Waldo? Who is Waldo?

Kubashni is the new kid on the block, stepping in to handle sales for The Umhlanga magazine. She can cook a mean biryani. Oh, and did I mention that she is also very single!

What is your nickname? KUBEY.

What is your guilty pleasure? Malva pudding with ice cream.

What don’t people know about you? I can cook like a chef!

Super-hero alter ego?I’d be Blossom from Power Puff Girls; she’s cute, dressed in pink with red hair — a package of awesomeness.

Immortal for a day? What would you do? Steal a Ferrari and drive it through the streets of Durban... FAST

The best part of waking up is? To be blessed to see another day (thank God).

What are your pet peeves? When people chew with their mouths open, it really disgusts me.

Unique or quirky habit? OMG! Having about five pairs of shoes in my car — a woman can never be too prepared.

If you were reincarnated as a drink what would it be? A Cosmopolitan with lots of cherries because it’s dainty like me.

So where is Waldo? Who the fire-truck is Waldo?

Justin aka Boss man wears many hats... He has two main characteristics, serious business man and wayward teen.

What is your nickname? There is a special person in the office who calls me ‘J-Dawg” on Fridays.

What is your guilty pleasure? I know you wouldn’t say so from my chiselled body but it’s chocolate! Not the fancy smancy stuff, just good old fashioned milk chocolate.

What don’t people know about you? I’m actually Tony Stark.

Super-hero alter ego?This is a no brainer – Iron Man. He’s badass

Most of you will know her as the sweet sales lady on the phone and the bull terrier debt collector.

What is your nickname? Boo.

What is your guilty pleasure? Hands down....Hot Chocolate.

and he doesn’t care if people know his real identity. Why doesn’t he care you ask? Because Tony Stark is also badass.

Immortal for a day? what would you do? I’d miss content deadlines and not worry about it.

The best part of waking up is? The person lying next to me.

What are your pet peeves? I really don’t know if I have a pet peeve. There are things that I’m not crazy about and I’m sure the old chirp about me being grumpy will come up on this question. (The Ballito disagrees with this)

Unique or quirky habit?I have to turn the geyser off every day. It started out being about saving electricity but I can honestly say it’s a habit now. Turning it back on is a bit more of a challenge but that’s a different story about cold showers.

If you were reincarnated as a drink what would it be? I’d be a Kopi luwak coffee – because life is more about the journey than the destination.

So where is Waldo? C’mon, this is easy. He’s either on the cover of the Ballito Magazine or he’s standing next to Tony Stark.

What don’t people know about you? I’m extremely afraid of heights and I actually have curly hair, although you’ll never catch me without my hair straightened!

Cartoon Character alter ego?Smurfette — she is super-cute, sweet, smart and loved by everyone!

Immortal for a day? what would you do? Swim to the bottom of the ocean.

The best part of waking up is?Not having an alarm set.

What are your pet peeves? Walking barefoot — creeps me out when my feet get dirty.

Unique or quirky habit?I never leave home without wearing lipliner.

If you were reincarnated as an drink what would it be? Strawberry Lips — besides being my favour-ite colour, a personal fave as well.

So where is Waldo? Somewhere where you’d least expect!

Ballito

Super-epic graphic designer for The Ballito magazine and the youngest member of the team, clocking in at year 1991, and has a disturbing hankering for fast food!

What is your nickname? Katie, Kit-Kat.

Immortal for a day? What would you do? The whole point of immortality is that it’s forever — not sure it counts if it’s just for one day… I guess I’d jump off a building or walk into oncoming traffic, just for kicks.

What is your guilty pleasure? Food-wise I cheat so much that I don’t really feel guilty about it anymore.

What don’t people know about you? I’m a little bit of a nerd! And I eat like a horse!

What are your pet peeves? Hand-dryers that don’t work in bathrooms with no towels, slow walkers, the “duck face” (next level pouting), people who wait in lines at bars and then don’t know what they want when they get to the front… Those are a few.

Cartoon Character alter ego?I would be Scooby-Doo because he eats all the time and cracks really lame jokes!

Unique or quirky habit? I give seriously awkward hugs! I know they’re going to be awkward, but I just can’t help it or stop it.

The best part of waking up is? Pshhhht! Is that a trick question? There is no good part!

If you were reincarnated as a drink what would it be? I don’t discriminate against any type of alcohol.

So where is Waldo? On every page of the Where’s Waldo books… duh! Come on, guys, they’re just children’s books...

Lucille is the master of sales for The Ballito. She is the champion when it comes to bringing in the moola and the resident social scene photo-hogger!

What is your nickname? Lulu, Loose-Wheel, Lu.

What is your guilty pleasure? Crispy potato chips (or any junk food)... can’t live without it.

What don’t people know about you? I’m a reptile-lover and I hate public speaking. Don’t confuse my loud mouth with an ability to speak to crowds.

Super-hero alter ego?Robin Hood — steal from the rich and give to the poor.

Immortal for a day? What would you do? Swim with the sharks (no cage).

The best part of waking up is? Waking up at midday — anything earlier than that isn’t really fun at all.

What are your pet peeves? Bad service. That can drive me up the wall.

Unique or quirky habit?I’m very loud. On the phone, in the office, in a meeting, I’m just loud.

If you were reincarnated as an animal what would it be? A seven-metre African Rock Python.

So where is Waldo? At Grandstand on a Thursday night — whoop, whoop!

heartthe

Ballito is growing rapidly and we’re starting to see what were once empty pieces of land slowly being transformed by the addition of magnificent buildings, changing the landscape of the place we call home. (You can read more about the new buildings shooting up on page 88-89) This, however, is the story of two buildings in particular that we believe are much more than just concrete and bricks — buildings that will have a tremendous impact on the community for years and years to come… two buildings that bring many people from different walks of life together as one. But most of all, they are buildings that have a heart behind them!

These building are the new LINC CHUrCH and the GrACe Hall at Ashton International College.

Linc | church

Ballito

I’m sure that most people on the North Coast have heard about this forward-thinking church that just lives and breathes energy, even to those that

don’t attend church! Since its inception, Linc has been holding services at the Litchi Orchid and has gained an extensive and loyal following of worshippers thanks to the wise words, wisdom and vigorous preaching style of Pastor Dylan Jahnig. Three years ago Dylan’s dad blessed the church with a piece of land so that a place could be created where the people of the community could come together as one and celebrate a bigger story. Their vision going in was not to create a “church” but to create a campus, a place for people to visit and be inspired at any time or day they wanted to — a centre for the community.

What started as a 400-people structure soon grew into a R15 million building more than 3000m2 in size, with a 950-seater auditorium — and that’s not including the 400 outside seats.

The reason for its size arose from the vision to create a church that really gets into the face of the community instead of, as in

days gone by, a place that hid in the corner and was only visited on a Sunday. So, to break the norms, it was decided to create a building that the town couldn’t ignore, one that if you drove past it or got wind of it, you just had to visit. Then, on visiting, you’d find that there is much more to it than just a church building — a place where life, love and laughter meet to inspire the uninspired. Dylan’s vision comes from a well-known Pastor at Hillsong Church in Australia, Brian Houston, who said that he dreamt of a church that was so large in size and influence that the city could not ignore it. That was 30 years ago and today Hillsong is one of the top three tourist destinations in Australia.

Inside the campus will be a “grand” auditorium, as well as catering facilities for campus events, a coffee shop (of course), a whole wing dedicated to kids that can only be compared to Disney Land (at least that’s the dream), a production house fitted with a green screen, boardroom facilities and office space to rent. Essentially, Linc aims to be the host ground for any big event in Ballito — the centre of the community where memories will be forever etched within the

walls for generations to come and most of all a destination!

Having taken a walk through the building site and listened to Dylan’s passion, it’s not impossible to see this as the future for our town. To have a space filled with people who are excited about life could truly impact our community for the better and also say to outsiders that there is more to us than meets the eye. It will be a pillar of the community, more so another landmark in our bustling town. In the future, a simple drive to Salt Rock will have you looking to your right at the campus at what can only be described as a sight to behold!

Having a church with people in it that breathes life into the town is the ultimate goal and with its open-door policy and sheer “audacious faith”, as they call it, I know that we have not seen the end of the growth that a church of this calibre and passion has coming. So, break away from the silence and rejoice in the fact that being enthusiastic about life, your community and God is much easier than being in denial.

Ballito

Throughout the years, Ashton has had to use different venues every time there was a school function, most of which have not been able to cater for the growing school, and this has led to the splitting up of the different grades for every function. Back in my heyday, the hall was where you started school with your first assembly and finished school at your final prize-giving. It was somewhere where the whole school could get together as one and not divided into forms. It was a place where memories where made and good times were shared by parents, teachers and students alike — from school plays to receiving the medal or certificate that you had worked so hard for, but most of all it was a place where the whole school could share in each others successes.

This may seem trivial to some who might have forgotten all about this type but a school hall is an important part of your school career, a place where rules were laid down by the headmaster, where students learnt what it really meant to be part of a school — a team. GRACE Hall, by its sheer size, will provide this for the ever-growing school and this is the very reason why André Buys the CEO of Ashton, decided that it was

high time that the flourishing college had a hall to call its own.

André’s passion for the school knows no bounds and it was for this reason that the hall has been named GRACE taken from Germare (Mr Buys’s wife’s name), Rynhardt (his second son), André (CEO and also for Ashton), C (College) and Eghardt (his first son). This is a tribute to the family that has done so much for the school and for the generosity that will forever be its legacy in the very roots of Ashton. There’s a quote to the effect that true leadership comes from those people who plant trees without knowing if they’ll ever sit in the shade of that tree, they do it for future generations. These wise words certainly fit André’s vision.

Everything, from its sheer size to the state-of-the-art equipment that will be installed in the building, has been planned to enhance the school’s already impeccable educational system and to create a new generation of creative and talented Ashtonians. So what does this 4000m2, 1200-seater building include? The answer is basement parking, a music centre with two music rooms and five breakaway classrooms, a sound and lighting room, a staff room and the main hall and

backstage area. Amenities include plasma screens running the length of the back wall and sound and lighting equipment.

Apart from the fact that the hall will provide a place for people to congregate, it will also become a great new landmark for the community. Think about the impression this building and its size has on people visiting the area. It shows that our town is growing, that we are not afraid of investing in it and, most importantly, that we have flourishing schools that provide top-quality education. It shows that Ballito isn’t here to mess around and that we can have it all — the chilled coastal lifestyle and a successful business state of mind.

You may see these structures as nothing but mere buildings, but I hope that after reading this, the next time you drive past them you will take a look and see how many lives they impact for the better and just how much they show what Ballito is made of! Ballito

I recently found a little gem in the heart of Ballito, a hair salon that makes you want to go for a weekly visit just so that you can see the

people there and enjoy the atmosphere. Head First is one of the longest-running hair salons in Ballito — opened by former owner, Peggy Blackmore, a whopping 10 years ago.

New owner, Robyn Clark, who worked for Goldwell International for over 10 years, has kept the same great spirit in the salon while adding a great touch of vintage classic. This mini revamp truly does make the salon a place for comfort and unpretentious relaxation and, with Free Wi-Fi and a book exchange library, it truly gives visitors a unique experience. Walking in, I immediately felt that this was a place where I could feel at home and I know that all the clients agree.

Going in I knew that there was some serious damage control to do. Charlotte,

my stylist for the day, who is a hair expert with over 20 years in the industry behind her, explained that you get two types of wear-and-tear on your hair — chemical, from adding highlights and mechanical, from the sun and flat irons, etc.

I, unfortunately, had a lot of both types of damage, so the plan was to go back to basics and bring life, volume and health back into my hair. Charlotte told me exactly what my hair needed to have done to make it look great again and offered the best possible options to get there. She explained the colour chart in detail to me so that I understood what would best work for me, just as you suit clothing to your body type, you have to suit colour and cut to your facial structure, eye colour and skin colour. The result was a cool, dark brown with a touch of warmth, which not only makes my hair look healthy, but makes my skin colour look more vibrant and the rings under my eyes less prominent.

Before my colour was applied, I went for a wash, something which I found quite unique. It was explained to me that the wash cleanses your hair of any impurities; this then allows the colour to penetrate deep within the shafts of hair. I then went for a Moroccan Repair Treatment for moisture and hydration (which you can do at home as well) — a truly amazing product! Because long hair is just so much more fun, we kept my length, but made the layers more gradual to frame my face better.

The end result was astounding! My hair was shiny and healthy, the cut suited my face perfectly, the colour complemented me and the texture of my hair was something I had never seen before. This was a truly amazing experience and one that I will most definitely be going back for.

BallitoSpa review

Visiting Symone and her team at Awesym for the first time was a real treat and what was especially nice was that it was away from the

hustle and bustle that is Ballito. With a very professional, friendly bunch of ladies, this spa runs smoothly and efficiently and after filling in a client form, I was taken upstairs to enjoy my morning of pampering.

We started with a back, shoulder and neck massage that made me realise that a full body massage may no longer be my favourite! The intense and totally relaxing massage that focused on my poor, stressed back was exactly what I needed and, I must admit, it was probably the best massage I have ever had.

We then moved on to a Dermalogica facial and, although this product is not one of my favourites, the way that Awesym uses the product made my skin glow and feel pampered like never before. Juanene

handled my facial expertly and I love the fact that she had a few unique ways of doing the facial that really worked for me, like double cleansing and steaming during the cleansing. She explained each step to me and it all made perfect sense. It made me think that the right therapist with a good product is actually just as important as the product range itself.

Towards the end of the facial, Kaylene came into the room and started my pedi, which really worked for me both time-wise and spoil-wise! I was then treated to a delicate sandwich, fresh juice and a chocolate which were perfectly timed just before finishing the pedi and very relaxing mani. Here they use the leading brand, Essie, to achieve the perfect end-result. It is rare that you find the passion and love for the business and clients that I felt from my two therapists!

Awesym promotes and uses two main products, Dermalogica, which is the

preferred product of many people, and then one that I was quite intrigued by — Lamelle, which is quite “medical”. What I really love about it is that it was developed by a man and there are only three products. These have many added benefits in each to give you the same result — I am awful at the “long haul” (which is why I go for complete facials instead), but this simple, yet really effective range is just up my alley.

The salon offers all the usual aspects of beauty therapy, with a full treatment menu. It also offers a long, relaxing day spa experience or a quick lunchtime do-it-all booking.

All and all, I was very impressed. I walked away totally relaxed, feeling special and well-treated and very glad that I had experienced another amazing spa right here in Ballito!

When we were invited to a meal at the new and improved Quarter Cafe at the Quarter Centre, I must admit that I had my reservations, but I did want to give Ryan, the new guy, a chance. Well, I was more than pleasantly surprised! Ryan and his staff, Cameron and Bongi, are all so friendly. We arrived at lunchtime as a party of six — a nice mix of adults, a teen and a kidlet. (A mix like this is enough to test any new spot!)

The menu is rather short and sweet, but it has SUCH a WOW factor that I was quite sad that we probably wouldn’t be able to experience it all. But and then, to my surprise, we all ordered different meals, which was FANTASTIC as we could then get to taste and see the WHOLE menu in one fell swoop... and herein lay another test — six different meals.

Ryan accepted the challenge and won hands down when six amazing meals all came out of the kitchen at the same time! I was very impressed with the homemade burgers and chips (no chips out of a packet for this lot) and let me tell you that I am a fussy mule when it comes to burgers. They are not my favourite meal when I’m eating out as I prefer making my own. Well, no more — I’ll be visiting Ryan when the burger craving hits! I had the cheese and mushroom burger, which was tasty, juicy and very yummy. We also had the steak, egg and chips special, which was well-prepared and delicious. The sweet chilli chicken spud was perfectly cooked and a definite must for spud-lovers. The chicken and avo wrap was perfection and, coming from a wrap-lover, apparently one of the best ever! We also had the steak and onion tramezini, which was also full of flavour and well prepared. The table became very quiet which, for the six of us, is very unusual. All that you heard between bites was, “Oh, this

A F a n t a s t i c f o o d e x p e r i e n c eis amazing”, “So tasty”, “Taste this” and happy sighs. Oh, and on top of it all, every order came out 100 percent perfect as ordered, with hard eggs and even the avo, as requested, on the side.

We were impressed with the R50 lunchtime special. They have also started delivering and have a slightly different fast food delivery menu, something for which there is a real need in this area. This menu includes curries (under R40), pap and wors (R20), fish and chips and pie and chips (R30) — I can’t wait for them to

deliver across the road at San Hall! In the meantime, I will happily trudge across the road. Well done, Ryan and your team — your food is top-notch and I look forward to trying out your breakfast this Monday morning. I think I may have found my new favourite coffee shop for breakfast and lunch. The cafe opens at 7.30 a.m and closes at 4p.m.

What is also great, is that this quaint little centre covers a lot of your potential shopping and beauty needs too.

The sun was just setting as we made our way down from the lobby of the Fairmont Zimbali Resort towards the Ayoba! Mexican Restaurant.

We were greeted by enthusiastic staff and presented with a signature cocktail to sip on as we were taken around the exotic location. Ayoba! is nestled amongst the trees and overlooks a large pool and bar area, as well as our beautiful Ballito coastline that can be seen beyond the trees. The setting can only be described as a true oasis!

Before we knew it, the sun had set and we were being led to our table. We were told that it wouldn’t be a true Mexican fiesta without Tequila and Margaritas, so we started our evening off with a shot of incredibly smooth Tequila accompanied by Tabasco in place of salt and pineapple in place of lemon. As for the Margaritas? Chilli and guava flavour, classic corona and classic traditional... we tried them all!

Once we had finished our drinks and were settled in, we were greeted by Chef Raynor Damons, the mastermind behind the Mexican-style menu. Having spent some time in Mexico during his travels, he knew exactly what he wanted for his menu (with the heat dialled down a little) and no stereotypes, like burritos! Just real Mexican food... Taco’s, Nachos, Enchiladas, Fajitas and, for the more traditional eaters, he throws in some poolside favourites like

pizzas, burgers and sandwiches with a Mexican twist. Chef Raynor then talked us through a delicious-looking menu and explained that in Mexico it’s very traditional to eat “family-style” which is many platters that everyone shares served at the table. Not one to pass up on any traditions, we elected to try the traditional route and eat Mexican family-style.

To start and get our hungry stomachs warmed up, we had Tortas and Dips, with flavours including roast bell pepper and kidney bean, queso cilantro de Carmen, smoked chipotle and feta dip and tangy lime guacamole served with cumin-spiced tortilla chips. As we snacked on our entrée while enjoying our surroundings and sipping our cocktails, we had no idea the of taste sensations we were about to experience as Chef Raynor prepared a veritable onslaught of his signature dishes.

Our second dish was two large, healthy- and tasty-looking ensalades, which are salads served in a crispy flour tortilla basket. We tried two salads between the four of us — the Ayoba Beach Salad, which is grilled chicken breast, chorizo, chopped tomato, avocado, red onion, queso fresco and cilantro vinaigrette, and the Dos Camino Salad, which consisted of toasted corn, apple, pinto beans, olives ,tomato, anejo cheese and cumin vinaigrette.

As the salads were settling, dish number three arrived — Nachos, a favourite of mine which certainly lived up to their highly-rated Mexican reputation! Once again we were served two plates of Nachos — Bravos Nachos, which were highly recommended by chef Raynor and consisted of refried beans, tomato Bravos sauce, jalapeños and tomato salsa. The second plate was Amigo Nachos, which were grilled chicken, jalapeños and pico de gallo salsa. In one simple word — YUMMY!

Next (dish number four, if your keeping track) we tried traditional soft-shelled Tacos, which came in three delectable flavours —Taco de Tinga, (marinated chicken with tinga sauce and cilantro), Taco Pescado (grilled reef fish, spicy slaw and smoked paprika aioli) and last, but by no means least, Taco Carnita,, which consisted of guava-marinated slow-roasted pork and pickled red onion. The latter was certainly the dish of the night and had us just about licking the plate clean!

After a short breather and more Tequila, we were served dish number five — Fajitas, which are warm tortillas served with a stuffing of your choice: De Pollo (grilled and sliced chicken breast fillets) and De Carne (marinated strips of Karan beef fillet). By this

point in the evening, we were far beyond “full” and were simply eating because the food was far too good to turn it away!

But we weren’t done yet! Our last course of the night was, of course, dessert. We finished off our evening with three desserts — Crepes con Cajeta, which are crepes with walnuts, banana and chocolate, served with vanilla ice cream and which came in the colours of the Mexican flag, one red, one green and one white! They looked far too pretty to eat, but we never turn away dessert! The second dessert was Tarta de Manzana, (a classic apple tart served with cinnamon ice cream) and the last dessert was a Mexican Fudge Brownie Sundae in a tall glass bowl with vanilla ice cream, crispy churro, chopped brownie and toasted nuts, served with fudge sauce!) This was the perfect way to end an amazing night!

Ayoba! is easily accessible to the general public. Simply phone ahead and book! We thoroughly enjoyed our evening and were sad when it came to an end. I suppose the best way to sum up our experience is in the name of the restaurant itself — one hundred percent Ayoba!

Muchos Gracias!

The latter was certainly the dish of the night and had us just about licking the plate clean!“ “

Not many small holiday towns can boast a theatre, so it’s really very cool that Ballito has its own theatre — one which is intimate with quite a good vibe. The Pumpkin Theatre opened its doors in February 2010

and has been entertaining crowds of locals and holidaymakers ever since. We adore the fact that it is focused on being a supper / lunch theatre, but what we love most about it is the entertainment, Danny Fisher, who, as he told us during his performance of The Voice, was practically born singing... he LOVES entertaining people and so he does it with passion.

The show makes for a very reasonably-priced family outing at R100, including a tasty meal. We went to the Sunday lunchtime matinee show and were treated to a traditional carvery, so before the show had even started, we were already a very happy crowd! There is no disputing that La Montagne’s buffet meals are always tops! It is always, however, a good idea to confirm what type of buffet meal will be served prior to the show, as the tasty curries are also a firm favourite.

As the show starts, Danny commands the stage, the clapping starts and then The Voice takes you back to the good music days. As well as being an amazingly talented singer, Danny is also very funny (quite the comedian, I tell ya) and, on top of that, he does some excellent impersonations... Elvis, Meatloaf, Willie Nelson and even Madiba were definitely in the building! With the current show, The Voice, Danny takes you through his musical career and some real-life stories as he gives you an insight into his life as a one-of-a-kind entertainer.

He always invites other artists to join his performances, which is great, and on Sunday an impromptu table of angels even handled the background vocals! It was fun to watch Danny and his girls... it just works! As always, we had a very good time!

Shows are on every Friday evening and there is a Sunday matinee. Bring the family and let your ears be entertained as ONE man brings you MANY voices.

Ballito

old news, New news, Good news!

If Ballito’s progress and development were a rugby game, we’d be in the first few minutes of the second half, having come out of the change rooms after a

serious pep talk, with determination in our eyes and a new hunger to win in our bellies. The North Coast hasn’t been immune to the global trend of belt-tightening and being in the financial trenches, but this past year has seen the people of Ballito and the North Coast dust themselves off, heal scars and get their hands dirty. There is a fighting spirit on the North Coast and there is a revival of the business energy and community spirit which a few years back had seen it leading the way as one of the fastest-growing towns in the country.

So, what has been great about this past year and what lies on the horizon for the year ahead? There’s no way I’d be able to put everything into this one article — that’s why we publish The Ballito six times a year — but what I’ll do is celebrate a few of the highlights and tease a little about what is to come in the new year . If you’re a local, it will be enough to make you proud to be part of the journey happening here on the North Coast and, if you’re a visitor, I hope that you’ll be impressed with what this

flourishing town is doing on the east coast of africa!

Ballito wasn’t short of activities and events this year. Regulars, such as the Litchi Night Market and The Quarter Market, to name only a few, created hot spots for locals to hang out at, while the big events got the town buzzing for weeks before and after they had happened. The Mr Price Pro 6 Star surf competition produced another record-breaking year in kwadukuza as international surfers made their way to Ballito to ride our winter swells. The Mr Price Pro attracted tens of thousands of people to Ballito for the event and its media coverage got our town seen around the world! The free concerts on the beaches of Salt Rock are something to be experienced and they rocked for three nights in a row, bringing the best music in the country to our coastal town. If surfing and concerts weren’t enough, the iLembe Chamber and kwadukuza Municipality worked hard to bring the first Street Heroes motor racing event to the streets of Ballito. engines roared, tyres burned and tar was torn as super-cars raced, drifted and dragged through a set course in Leguna Seca.

The skyline of Ballito has also morphed. Business has been brave and, as you drive around, you see concrete and steel everywhere. Schools around Ballito have all been building and expanding, Land Rover and Jaguar will have an impressive new home in the Ballito Business Park (opening on 9 December) and perhaps the biggest news this year was the breaking of ground for a new Virgin active and McDonalds. By the time we go to print, the Virgin active building will be working on its second floor and local businessman Bruce Rencken says that both projects will be completed by September 2014 and will boost job creation in the area. The Circle shopping centre has also had a minor face-lift and the Food Lovers Market has been revamped. a little further north in Salt Rock, LINC Church has been hard at work building a new complex to serve a growing community.

With new buildings, new homes and new families making Ballito their home every year, the towns’ infrastructure has had to be upgraded and, whilst the N2 Interchange isn’t really a new project, we’re excited by its progress, no matter how slow. once completed, the new interchange will increase the town’s pulse-rate and make it

one of the primary spots on the N2 corridor, plus it will make getting into Ballito easier for both locals and our valued holiday visitors. an upgrade of the P445 — the main road into Ballito — was also started this year and, if all goes according to plan, Ballito will have wider, smoother roads before the end of 2014. (ed: Don’t hold us to this, but we remain hopeful.)

The uIP project is almost complete after much hard work and getting structures sorted. What is the uIP? It is the Ballito urban Improvement Precinct programme that will create desirable and well-managed

public areas around town. This significant project has been put together through a collaborative effort by the Chamber, the municipality and the appointed uIP service provider. With a commencement date set for early in 2014, we are set to see the first phase focus on many of the visible key zones around town.

If that isn’t enough, we’ve seen the first harvest at the iLembe Vineyards, with 10.1 hectares of planted vine that will be bottled at the iLembe Winery at Collisheen. The Sugar Rush adventure Centre has opened and will be ready for the December

holidays, the iLembe Chamber has got its Business Support Centre off the ground and the children of Ballito have scooped up loads of national and international awards!

With so much that has happened and lots to look forward to in 2014, things are looking very, very promising on the North Coast. For those of you who are visiting, we hope that you’ll come back often in 2014 to see how we are doing. To the rest of you, who call this home — you’ll see me smiling in the traffic because, when it’s all done, I know we’ll all be living in a piece of paradise!

For some time now, the global trend in business has been to “hire a friend” in the form of a business coach. As more and

more businesses struggle to grow or are failing, having a business coach becomes a necessity. And the good news is that receiving coaching is an investment because the fees are absorbed by the increased profits resulting from the business re-education.

When talk turns to business coaching, many business owners have the perception that it’s only for businesses that are struggling. This is a common misconception and couldn’t be further from the truth, here’s why.

A coach can see the wood as well as the trees. They see your business from the outside in and are trained to put business, marketing and sales systems in place which, in our experience, most business owners are not trained to do. Coaches listen, make you focus on the game, make you run more laps

than you feel like running and give you ideas that you hadn’t thought of. They are able to provide perspective, companionship, quality advice and ask the hard questions that often need to be asked in order to create growth and more profit. In the relationship, the coach is the educator, mentor and your long-time partner. You are the player and it’s up to you to take the field.

When we think about coaching and who benefits from investing in it, a good starting point is to think of sport and why Olympians, who are arguably at the top of their game, invest in and value their coaches. Even though they are champions in their field, they recognise three key things that we in the business world can learn from:

1 It’s not failures that look to a coach; it’s those who show the most promise and the greatest commitment to being

a winner — people who want to learn so that they can win, seek advice and help from others.

2 Being great at something does not mean that you are good at everything and that’s okay. The brutal truth is

that market conditions for businesses have shifted and developing responsiveness to the changes is non-negotiable. A business coach has access to tools that will make you more responsive and flexible.

3 Business owners who want to build resilient businesses, need to be investment- rather than cost-minded.

A coach will drive you to invest more in business knowledge so that you can get more out of your business.

The extra laps that a business coach will make you run to become more profitable and free up time to build a bigger business are so worth it in the end, as you will start to see your vision for your company materialise. In considering your business as you read this article, what might a business coach see that could initiate change in your business and ultimately deliver on the dreams that you have for yourself and your family?

understanding and improving how our patients experience their care is a key component to successfully delivering high quality care — care that is based on each patient’s individual needs.

at Netcare aberlito, we strive to recognise this component and aim to deliver high quality clinical care at all levels of all our hospital care units.

our aim is to improve our patients’ experience by looking at every aspect of how care is delivered, analysing and fixing processes and systems, ensuring staff engagement, care and development.

our patient care is underpinned by living our values of care, truth, dignity, passion and participation, and practising the “Netcare Way”.

Netcare alberlito is committed to providing services that are truly patient-centred. our credo is to place patient experience at the heart of everything we do and say.

To this end, patient experience has become a measurable outcome of care. It has a strong focus on patients having a say in the care provided. This is done by completing a patient feedback survey on discharge.

While there is no single path to improving patient experience, the following points are what make it possible at Netcare alberlito hospital.

•Transformational, quality leadership.•Clear vision and passion for what we do.•Desired values and behaviours

embedded across our facility and our organization as a whole.

•engaged, empowered and valued staff at all levels.

•engaged patients and their families.•engaged clinicians and allied support

services.•an environment conducive to healing.•a culture of continued learning,

innovation and continued quality improvement.

of the kind of feedback that we, the staff of alberlito Medical Care unit, receive from our patients long after they have left our care.

We pride ourselves on the knowledge that our 25-bed unit, which cares for patients with conditions ranging from depression

our dedicated group of nurses and doctors consistently go the extra mile to ensure that safe patient-care is rendered, while at the same time creating a comfortable environment for our patients and so making our unit “a home away from home“.

Special mention must be made of our extraordinary seven-member team of care workers, who exude friendliness, compassion and commitment, especially to our frail and geriatric patients.

Meet some of our caring Doctors

Dr Nad Govender

What is your speciality? It is Neurosurgery, with spinal focus.

Why this field of medicine?

I’ve always been fascinated by the human body and, in particular, the control mechanisms — the brain and the spine. I therefore naturally graduated towards queening the arts.

What do you love most about your line of work? The gratitude of patients who have been cured by surgery.

Tell us about your most interesting case? This has to be the case of a child who had a dart lodged in her head. It had penetrated the skull and the tail was protruding out. She obviously needed emergency surgery. After the successful surgery, I was then informed that the family banned the game of darts in their home!

Dr Adesh Naidoo

What is your speciality?I am a Specialist General Physician and I see a broad spectrum of patients, each unique and interesting, with the challenge being to find a

diagnosis relating to his/her symptoms.

What do you love most about your line of work?I love the challenge of making a diagnosis. Frequently, when nothing has been previously determined, finding a solution will make my patient feel better. It is gratifying to see a patient relieved of their symptoms, and to have made a positive difference to a fellow human being.

Tell us about your most interesting case?I recall a very challenging case in which a middle-aged man was referred to me

for non-specific upper backache. Several blood tests later he was found to have diabetes mellitus and also high cholesterol levels. A stress ECG demonstrated some minor changes, which a subsequent angiogram confirmed as being a tight stenosis of one of his coronary arteries. A stent was inserted and a myocardial infarct averted. His back pain had been caused by angina, which was subsequently resolved.

Dr Irshad Ganie

What is your speciality?I am a Specialist Neurologist.

Why this field of medicine? It’s a pretty simple really: I

find the nervous system the most amazing part of the human body.

What do you love most about your line of work?Finding a solution to a clinical problem and thereby giving hope to a patient.

Tell us about your most interesting case? A middle-aged woman presented to me with a peculiar problem: she could not recognize familiar faces but she could, however, recognize their voices and her memory was normal. This patient ended up having a stroke in the part of the brain responsible for facial recognition.

Jaco & Naude Kriek

What is your speciality?Orthopaedics, which is the medical speciality that focuses on injuries and the diseases

of your body’s musculoskeletal system. This complex system includes your bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves

and allows you to move, work, and be active.

Why this field of medicine? It is a hands-on and very rewarding speciality.

What do you love most about your line of work? The technical nature of the surgery and the attention to detail that is required. The gratification of seeing the results of treatment, whether conservative or surgical is also very rewarding. We are also privileged as brothers to be able to work side by side.

Tell us about your most interesting case?Because of the wide scope of orthopaedic practice we are exposed to diverse and interesting pathology on a daily basis, whether it be a youngster with a fracture, sports injuries, polytrauma patients or those with debilitating arthritis. There

is never a dull moment in an orthopaedic practice.

Dr John De Beer

What is your speciality?

My speciality is Orthopaedics.

Why this field of medicine?Because of the very rewarding results. What do you love most about your line of work?Well, I get to meet very interesting people. I also appreciate the fact that the staff and my colleagues are motivated and share the same work ethic. Tell us about your most interesting case? While I was in Somalia, I treated a child with an AK47 gunshot wound. On examination, I found a piece of dead bone in the pelvis which had resulted in non-healing open wound. Once this had been removed, he started a successful healing process.

DR Malcolm Carey

What is your speciality?I am an Ophthalmologist.

Why did you pick your speciality?

It is a technical surgical speciality which requires demanding surgical skills and intense patient interaction. There is a superb marriage with technology as well.

What do you love most about your line of work? The fact that it offers an opportunity to really make a difference. The field is continuously evolving, which constantly opens the door for new treatment options.

Tell us about your most interesting case? This would have to be the first time that I saw post-operative cataract patients. One fellow had been blind for 15 years and was laughing with joy to see his wife again. Then he started crying when he saw how old she had become!

Dr Nischal Ramkisson

What is your speciality? My speciality is internal medicine and we are called specialist physicians or internists. Internal medicine is the study of disorders of

the internal organs of the adult human body. These include disorders of the heart, lungs, brain, endocrine organs, blood, gastrointestinal tract, autoimmune conditions, etc. The field is vast and encompasses a wide range of disorders such as diabetes, hypertension, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, thyroid disorders, strokes and renal disorders.

Why this field of medicine?I like the fact that 90 percent of the time a diagnosis can be made based on a good history from the patient and a physical examination, with the diagnosis confirmed

by ordering a broad range of laboratory and radiological tests.

What do you love most about your line of work? The field is quite broad, so one is never bored. You get to meet people from all walks of life. It also allows you to interact with colleagues from other medical disciplines.

Tell us about your most interesting case?No two patients are the same, so that makes every case that I see interesting. I recently saw a patient with an acute viral infection who presented with a self-limiting acute nephritis and viral myositis. I aIso saw a critically ill patient with an uncommon disorder of the blood called thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura.

Dr Riaan Venter

What is your speciality? I am a Urology Surgeon.

Why this field of medicine?

My specialty entails work on the kidneys, bladder, prostate and genitalia. The problems I face involving these organs are very interesting and challenging.

What do you love most about your line of work?I feel that I have the ability to make a difference in each patient’s life! Curing patients of diseases like kidney stones, incontinence and cancer are very rewarding. Making a patient feel at ease, improving their quality of life and, if necessary, to walk with them through the battle with cancer are things that I love about my speciality.

Tell us about your most interesting case?Because I work with the genitalia, all my interesting cases are strictly for adults only and not really suitable for a family magazine. Sorry, guys...

Dr Vimul J. Valabjee

What is your speciality?I am a Diagnostic Radiologist.

Why this field of medicine?I embarked on a career in radiology based on the challenge posed by a speciality that embraces a general overview of most clinical disciplines and specialities. The varying nature of patient problems and the related imaging findings appealed to me.

What do you love most about your line of work?Radiology helps you keep in touch with most disciplines and there is always fantastic interaction with other specialists in arriving at correct patient diagnoses and management strategies. Furthermore, radiological imaging has advanced tremendously and technological capabilities continue to evolve in this dynamic medical science. With this in mind, my next career ambition and challenge is to have an MRI installed at Alberlito Hospital.

Tell us about your most interesting case. When I look back at my years in radiology, there have been numerous interesting medical cases but my most interesting case has to be a life lesson learned from a patient that visited my department over a period of at least 18 months for repeated CT scans and who I got to know very well. Sadly, he is no longer with us, but what I do remember and did learn from him was, “The purpose of life is to be happy!”

WorDS RICHaRD WeBB

Very few new cars are bad anymore, says Richard Webb, as he looks at ten recently launched cars that are all vying for your cash.

The Chevrolet Spark is amongst one of the least expensive small cars on the market today. It’s always difficult to design a pretty, tiny little car, but the Spark has packed enough personality and features in it to be a subcompact well worth looking at. Inside, it’s all very clean and simple, with sculpted flourishes that forgive the low rent plastics used. It’s not a sporty drive, but the limited grip makes it a real hoot to thrash about in urban environments. Range starts R103 300.

The Ford kuga Titanium model has a raft of clever tech, including wizardry that enables me to shout at the radio to turn it on. It manages to look good and it drives impressively once you work out how to start it. It’s a perfectly smooth and predictable car to drive and the diesel motor seems willing. No one takes them off-road, but it’s nice to know it can. The kuga cossets its occupants – leaving you feeling unstressed after a long drive. Worthy spend this one. Range starts R262 193.

Some cars just have that cheeky “go on, try me” look about them and the Renault Clio is one of them. This five-door hatch oozes more Gallic charm than warm Camembert. The famous Renault logo takes centre stage on the radiator grille, behind which lays its thrumming heart - a tiny but lusty 898cc turbocharged 3-cylinder engine, returning 4.4l/100km on the combined cycle. She handles responsively and feels more than capable. It doesn’t come cheap, but there’s so much to like. Range starts R149 900.

The Toyota auris HSD Xs is mostly for numerologists. It’s about the numbers, you see. Power comes from a 1798cc petrol engine, which produces 73kW and adds to that the 60kW from its electric motor. Torque of 207Nm from the electric engine adds to the petrol’s 142Nm. So where are we going with this number-fest? How about fuel consumption of 3.8l/100km on the combined cycle and Co2 emissions of 85g/km? Now the car starts making some sense. Range starts R198 000.

Bakkies are still massive business in South africa and that’s reflected in Isuzu assembling more than 20 derivatives at its Port elizabeth plant. Is the Isuzu kB 240 Le 4x4 Double Cab any good? Inside, it’s updated and roomier than before. Ride quality and comfort has also been massively improved over the old model. It feels tougher than an anvil but is a bit outclassed by rivals but is still an honest to goodness bakkie worth a look. Range starts R218 900.

The more things change, the more they remain the same. except when it’s an audi a3 Sportback. Gone is the filling-loosening ride and nose-heavy handling, but it’s barely noticeably different to the model it replaced, but that doesn’t really matter, because the a3 is brilliant. Like a precious jewel wrapped in utilitarian drab, it’s a tour de force of quality engineering and dynamic handling. The interior is about as blingy as a monks’ wardrobe, but oh so beautifully made. Range starts R283 000.

The CR-V Comfort FWD (Front Wheel Drive) has a willing 2.0 i-VTeC petrol engine with a 6-Speed Manual transmission. Before you write it off because it only has two driven wheels, very few will buy this car for its off road ability. It’s about functional family motoring. Comfortable and easy to drive, there is an immense boot and loads of cabin space. The standard six-speed manual gearbox has a sweet shift and gives it long legs for comfortable driving. Range starts R306 800.

In an earlier editorial, I called the Suzuki Grand Vitara I tested a competent soft-roader. Suzuki South africa PR begged to differ and suggested I take the car back to mete out serious off-road treatment to discover how competent the car was in the rough stuff. off-road ability was surprisingly good - thick power-sapping sand couldn’t bog the car down and ground-clearance was impressive. What it may lack in terms of on-road manners is compensated by its good build quality and willing 2.4-litre VVT petrol engine. Range starts R307 900.

Many buyers of ‘crossovers’ want economy combined with the SuV look, which is why the imposing Chevrolet Trailblazer 4x4 is here. Inside, there are chunky Tonka Toy shapes and curves everywhere, but some of the plastics are a bit hard and scratchy. It’s huge inside, with plenty of room for a big family. The smooth six-speed automatic is responsive and relaxing, but don’t hustle it around corners too aggressively and it will give you balanced handling.. Range starts R373 200.

The Lexus IS 350 gets the 3.5 litre and the maddest version of the ‘corporate face’. The profile is all aggressive origami and is generally well resolved. The rear wheels are driven through an eight speed automatic gearbox with eco, Sport and Normal drive modes. Smooth and composed, it absorbs bumps well and remains taught when pushed hard – with the steering feel better than any previous Lexus. It will soon start becoming a bit of a nuisance for its German rivals. Range starts R449 000.

When did you start?August this year.

What do you do?We produce designer memory-foam beanbags, which are covered in a range of different, quality fabrics in an assortment of colours. As our name suggests, we are passionate about comfort.

Why did you start this business? Our family has always dreamed of finding a way that we could work together in a business context. Between us we have a varied range of talents and interests and we make a great team. So, when we caught onto the idea of producing beanbags, we knew that this would be the ideal way to let our dreams take flight.

What do you think your customers want?Comfort in a way that they’ve never thought to experience it before. We’ve intentionally chosen to steer away from the traditional method of beanbag production, as we knew that, by utilizing memory foam instead of polystyrene balls, we would open up a whole new world of “Shloomfy” to our customers.

Biggest lesson learnt?Patience is a virtue!

What do you deem to be success? We personally don’t equate success to finances, but believe that success is having a dream in your heart and letting it take flight, regardless of whether you succeed or fail.

What do you think the cornerstone of your business will be?Quality and service.

What is your number one rule in business?Don’t ever let business affect family life!

What are your views on integrity in business? We believe in bringing personal value systems and morals into our business. A business should be run transparently, honestly and with great integrity, always saying what you mean and meaning what you say.

What words come to mind when you hear the name “Ballito”?Family. It’s hard to go anywhere in this town without bumping into family and familiar faces. That’s what we love.

What does the future hold for you and your business? We would love to be able to pass this business down from generation to generation and to hopefully expand internationally.

Ballito’s business sector is really thriving so, for the next couple editions, we will be profiling those businesses that have been around and running successfully for over 10 years, as well as some that have just started out. Meet our December Seeds to Trees...

Ballito

When did you start? In September 1997.

What do you do?The Lockeroom is a health and fitness centre that offers good, old-fashioned training. We pride ourselves on providing our members with a wide variety of exercise disciplines under one roof.

Why did you start this business? My late wife, Pamela Young, started the Lockeroom. She was in the fitness industry her whole life and Ballito needed a gym.

What do you know that your customers want?Value for money and friendly, helpful staff!

Biggest lesson learnt? You cannot please everybody, no matter how hard you try.

When did you know that you were successful? We moved to our current premises in 2005, hoping to double our membership of 250. When we reached 1500 members, we were extremely proud.

What is the cornerstone of your business?Being owner-managed and family-run. My late wife had a very specific vision in terms of having personal relationships with our members and always trying to help people where we can. Having each of my four daughters work with me at one time or another over the years, has been a great

blessing. My daughter, Domenique, has been with me for over 13 years and is my “right-hand-woman”.

What’s your number one rule in business?Be honest in all that you do.

What are your views on integrity in business? You cannot last in business without integrity, especially in a “small” place like Ballito.

What words come to mind when you hear the name “Ballito”? Local. Community. Support. It is because

to

of the people of Ballito that we have been able to get to 16 years in this industry. They are the anchor of our business — both members and staff. Without them, we have no business.

What does the future hold for the Lockeroom? Many people have asked us this in relation to new gyms coming to Ballito. All we can say is that we will continue to offer the same value-for-money memberships that we always have, in an environment that cares about its members — not as numbers, but as people.

Come November and it’s guaranteed that I’ll be subjected to the usual garbage and banter relative to quick weight loss for the December holidays — wanting to be teeny in the bikini, or simply having to get into the LBD for hubby’s office party.

So maybe I should set up a pop-up shop for the month of November and earn a fortune selling packages of “Get your Fat -to- Skinny body in just two weeks.” (If only!)

We only have ourselves to blame, let’s face it! We spend the holidays partying and letting loose, after which we start to feel physically awful and full of regrets. Then the resolutions to get lean, awesome, be powerful, generate more income, climb the career ladder, etc come in fast and furious. BUT, it’s pretty difficult and unrealistic to go from flat-out binge/party mode to all-out body beautiful overnight!

It’s time to re-evaluate your goals and quit repeating the same mistakes year after year, with the dreaded, “Here we go again!”

Allow me to fast-track you into 2014 by giving you some thought-provoking ideas that could just help you unleash your new body and take your health and wellness to a new level… for life!

Besides the stuff we already know, such as drink more water and less of everything else,

tEEN…Y!eat 10 servings of vegetables a day plus two fruits, curb the carbs, take Omega 3 and drink green tea, you may be surprised to learn that it really goes much deeper than just training hard and watching what you eat. The factors outlined below have had the biggest impact on the health, wellbeing and weight-loss of my clients this year.

• Insulin resistance: After years of consuming a diet full of processed carbohydrates and sugars, most people have grown insensitive to one of the most important hormones in our body — INSULIN! This hormone can be a huge asset to your goals for body transformation or a total fat loss and health derailing nightmare. Simply put, your body’s ability to process the carbohydrates you eat all comes down to your insulin sensitivity and your body’s ability to quickly and efficiently clear sugar from your blood. The less insulin you have floating around the better.

• oestrogen dominance wreaks havoc in our bodies, leading to weight gain, water retention, cellulite and even female cancers. It can also cause anxiety, a foggy brain, low sex drive and low blood sugar. Environmental toxins, high stress levels, nutritional deficiencies, processed foods and excessive alcohol and caffeine all increase oestrogen. Out-of-sync hormones make you fat and keep you that way. Make an intelligent decision to improve this area of your health

and body chemistry through a balanced diet and exercise.

• Sleep disturbances: Much research has been done to show the link between lack of sleep and changes in the secretion of hormones that affect appetite. The hormone leptin regulates appetite and lack of sleep causes a drop in leptin. Sleep deprivation also causes an increase in the hormone ghrelin, a hormone that makes you hungry! You snooze, you lose!

So the way forward in 2014 is to consciously take charge of all aspects of your health, including managing stress, balancing your hormones, getting enough sleep and managing insulin. It seems that the take-home formula recommended by most health and fitness professionals is this:

• Eat clean 80 percent of the time.• Exercise smarter, not harder, with high

intensity interval training and strength training.

• Engage in intermittent fasting one or two days a week.

May I take this opportunity to wish you a wonderful and blessed 2014. Get wings, surround yourself with those who have wings and do not allow them to be clipped.

What do king Shaka, Cuba and a railway line have to do with the history of the area? It doesn’t have anything to do with fierce battles, fine cigars or luxurious train travel, but a more interesting connection dating back to when my family’s old sugar farm, Beverley (now known as Simbithi), was starting out in the early 1920’s.

It’s amazing how one or two decisions can impact so profoundly on the future of an entire area, but that’s exactly what happened. When my great grandfather GP Ladlau was establishing Beverley Farm as a sugar estate in the early 1920’s, the hilly terrain posed an issue when transporting cane to the nearby narrow gauge railway that was used to transport cane to the mill. as a result, GP decided to use motorised transport to move his cane from the fields. The building of a simple road followed, which became the present day Shaka’s Rock Road that divides Simbithi. The newly-formed, but very basic road network then allowed access to the coast which until then had not been possible.

While the increasing cost of establishing a new farm utilising state of the art motorised technology was hurting GP Ladlau’s cash flow, the world sugar industry was in upheaval. The First World War had largely decimated the traditional sugar beet field’s

property

end, or to test the bravery of his warriors by making them jump. Historical records are vague at best to support this practice and more importantly, the exact location, but it was all that Charlie needed to tell a story and sell his product. as a result, Shaka’s Rock was named and the landmark Shaka’s Rock Hotel was established. as an additional marketing exercise, he erected a bust of king Shaka and placed it on a plinth at the intersection of the old road (The R102) between Maidstone and umhlali Village which was then the main road from Durban to Zululand. This was meant to attract passers-by. This bust still stands today where it was originally erected, and the area is known as Shaka’s Head as a result.

Being a marketer myself, I can’t but be amazed and impressed by this vision, creativity and determination to develop a destination from nothing. as a result of all this effort, the hotel was a world renowned destination right through the 30’s until the early 90’s. I remember being rewarded with a T-bone steak on the patio if I got a good report card, but there are many more fantastical stories of holidays gone by, the infamous bar and a precariously situated cliff top front lawn. It has always been said that there were a few patrons who fell off the cliff, but this probably had less to do with the ghost of king Shaka and more to do with a spirit of a different kind. What is certain is that the hotel will always leave an indelible mark in the minds of many locals. Sadly the hotel was knocked down to make way for a block of flats “Chaka’s Cove” in the mid 90’s.

I just love the history of our area and the families and individuals that have played their part in its history and character. So next time you drive along ocean Drive from Thompson’s Bay to Shaka’s Rock hopefully you’ll think, just for a brief second, about some of the characters and events that helped establish this beautiful part of our coastline.

in europe from which most of the world’s sugar was derived, and an alternative was desperately needed. It was at around this time that the opportunistic americans had begun to invest in the Cuban sugar industry and even went so far as to send across cheap labour much like our indentured labour system, and proceeded to take control of the world market. This needless to say had a major impact on GP and South african farmers who struggled to compete with the Cubans due to difficult logistics and higher transport costs.
