    In the late 17th century the streets of the City of London were filled with goldsmith-bankers. They provided monarchs and merchants with the money they needed to

    fund their world-wide ventures. One such business was founded by John Freame and his partner Thomas Gould in

    Lombard Street in 1690. The name Barclay became associated with the company in1736 when James Barclay who had married John Freame's daughter became apartner.

    In 1776 the firm was styled "Barclay, Bevan and Bening" and so remained until 1785,when another partner, John Tritton,was admitted, and the business then became"Barclay, Bevan, Barclay and Tritton".[

    In 1896 several banks in London and the English provinces, notably Backhouse'sBank of Darlington and Gurney's Bank of Norwich, united under the banner ofBarclays and Company, a joint-stock bank.Bank.Between 1905 and 1916 Barclaysextended its branch network by making acquisitions of small English banks.

    In 1965 Barclays established a US affiliate, Barclays Bank of California in SanFrancisco.

    Barclaycard, the first credit card in the UK, was launched in 1966 and in 1967

    Barclays unveiled the world's first ATM cash machine at Enfield, north London.British actor Reg Varney was the first one to use the ATM.

    In 1969 the planned merger with

    Martins Bank and Loyds Bank wasblocked by the Mergers andMonopolies Commission but the

    acquisition of Martins Bank on itsown was allowed. Barclaysbecame the first bank to re-openbranches on Saturday mornings in1982.Two years later, in 1984,Barclays posted record profits.

    The following year Barclays Bank

    and Barclays Bank Internationalmerged: as part of the corporatereorganisation, the formerBarclays Bank PLC became agroup holding company, In 1985Barclays introduced Connect, thefirst debit card in the UnitedKingdom. The Connect brand wasused on all Barclays debit cardsuntil July 2010.

    In 1986 Barclays bought de Zoete & Bevan and Wedd Durlacher to form

    BZW and to take advantage of the Big Bang on the London StockExchange.

    In 1996 Barclays bought Wells Fargo Nikko Investment Advisors (WFNIA)and merged it with BZW Investment Management to form Barclays Global

    Investors.Two years later - in 1998 - the BZW business was brokenup.Barclays retained the debt business which formed the foundation of whatis now Barclays Capital.

    In July 2003, Barclays completed the acquisition of Banco Zaragozano, oneof Spain's largest private sector banking groups, which was founded in1910.

    In July 2005, Barclays Bank PLC acquired a majority stake of Absa Group

    Limited. Absa is South Africas largest retail bank with over seven millioncustomers. In 2008 Barclays Capital acquired Lehman Brothers' NorthAmerican investment banking and capital markets businesses. Thisacquisition cemented Barclays Capital position for its clients with a leadingpresence in all major markets

    Barclaycard is a global credit card and loan provider owned byBarclays plc in the UK. The Barclaycard was the first credit cardintroduced in the UK, coming into service in 1966. It enjoyed amonopoly until the introduction of the Access card in 1972.
