• It is an online reference management tool

• Stores and organizes your references

• Can be accessed anywhere anytime

• Cite whilst you write your paper

• Create bibliographies in your preferred referencing style

3 ways to do this:

1. Direct export – from certain online databases, e.g. EBSCOhost

2. Import text files – from certain online databases, e.g. PubMed

3. Add manually

Some databases do not offer the option to export references direct from their interface, namely:

• PubMed

• Cochrane Library

For such databases you will import from Text File.

Import Text Files - PubMedOpen up two separate browsers simultaneously, one for RefWorks and the other for the database to search

Step 2.From the result list, check the boxes next to each reference you want to send to your RefWorks database

Step 4.Check the small circle next to “File”

Step 1.Perform a search in PubMed

Step 3. Click on the dropdown arrow then go to step 4

Step 5.From the dropdown list, right click on “MEDLINE”

Step 6.Now click on “Create File” button.

This screen pops ups on top of your previous screen. Ensure that all references you have selected are here.

Now click on “File”, then “Save As” and name your file. Save it on your desktop.

Now login to your RefWorks account. Right click the “References” tab

Click on the down arrow and scroll down then choose NLM PubMed from the list. In the window below the database should automatically change to “PubMed”

Now click on the “Browse” button to search for the file that you have saved on your desktop.

Locate the file from the list, right click it once, then once it is moved to the file name window, right click the “Open” button.

Right click on “Import” to send these references to your RefWorks database.

Note that the previous results that were sitting in the “Last View Imported” folder disappear as soon as you add new references to your RefWorks database. Only the newly imported results will show.

However if you want to view all references in your RefWorks account, including those that are in folders, click on the “View” tab and select “All References”

These are mainly references that are not available online. It could be a:

• DVD

• Section or chapter in a book

• Newspaper article, etc…

Mouse over the “References” tab. Then from the dropdown list click on the “Add New” subtab.

Enter References Manually First choose the referencing style you prefer so that all the fields can be included in the form

Now from the dropdown arrow select the type of a reference you want to add.

Then populate the entire form , filling all the fields as instructed by your selected referencing style

What is Write-N-Cite and what does it do?

• Write-N-Cite is a freely downloadable utility that works with Microsoft Word.

• It allows you to access your references in RefWorks whilst writing your paper in Microsoft Word.

• Through it you can insert citation placeholders and when you are ready add bibliography.

• It will format your in-text citations and create a bibliography based upon only those citations that have been inserted into your word document.

• It allows you to do all this in your preferred citation style.

On RefWorks page, got to “Tools”, then click on “Write-N-Cite”

After downloading it, open MSWord and you can open Write-N-Cite from there. You can also launch it from your desktop (all this is applicable to Windows users only)

Launch Write-N-Cite

Open MS Word document, click on “Add Ins” from the navigation bar, then click on the “Write-N-Cite” to launch it.

Now login to Write-N-Cite using your RefWorks username and password.

When Write-N-Cite opens, it displays all your references. You may select to use references from a particular folder by clicking on “View”, “Folder” and select a particular folder

Inserting citation placeholders

Now you are ready to insert temporary citation placeholder. Place your cursor next to where you want to cite. Then click on the “Cite” hyperlink next to the reference you want to cite.

Note the temporary citation place holder has been inserted, but it is not yet formatted. Once you have completed your paper and having chosen your referencing style for your bibliography, then you can start formatting it.

You may insert more than one temporary citation placeholder at the same time by simply clicking the “Cite” hyperlink next to each reference you want to add.

When you have finished writing your paper, save it somewhere in your computer.Then drag Write-N-Cite back to your document and click on “Bibliography” from the toolbar

Now from the dropdown arrow on this page, select the output style of your choice. Then click on the “Create Bibliography” button above.
