Bethel members will be bringing Vacation Bible School to
Cat Lake, Ontario with Lutheran Association of Missionaries & Pilots
(LAMP). Cat Lake is a fly-in village in northwest Ontario, requiring a 9+
hour drive north, to Sioux Lookout, Ontario, followed by a 2 hour flight
on a small charter aircraft.
Cat Lake is like many of the native villages of the far north, with
extremely high rates of poverty, teen pregnancy, child abuse,
alcoholism, drug abuse, and a suicide rate seven times the Canadian
average. Many children live with shoomis and kokum (grandpa and
grandma) because their parents are addicted to drugs and are unable
to parent. Often shoomis and kokum speak only Oji-cree and therefore
cannot help their grandchildren with homework. Economic and social
prospects for youth are bleak.
Cat Lake made the news across North America last year when the 6th
graders in the village wrote a memo to parents in the village asking
them to get off drugs and stop hurting the community. Eighty percent
of the parents in Cat Lake are addicted to prescription drugs.
Bethel’s team will be facilitating a week of Vacation Bible School for
about 80-100 children in the community. Total estimated cost of the
trip including sports equipment, gas, flight, and food will be $ 4,500.
Your support is needed — most importantly, pray for each member of
the group to display an authentic life of faith as they embrace the kids
and the community with God’s love. Pray that God would prepare
hearts to hear His message of love and redemption.
Of course, financial help is also needed. The team will need to bring
their own food, snacks, supplies and gifts for the kids. A list of items
that can be donated will be available in the office, the narthex & at
bethelstpaul.com. Cash donations are welcome or make your check to
“Bethel Lutheran Church” marked for “LAMP Mission” and place it in
the offering.

PAGE 2 BETHEL BANNER
The cause is worthy and we must succeed. The enemy is powerful and enjoys a great numerical
advantage. We hold the key to victory which no one can take away, yet we often succumb to the
enemy, key in hand, without ever using it. I appeal to you today to join the resistance. Who are we
resisting? The devil? The evil forces in the world? Sin and death? Sure, they're on the same team
and need to be resisted, but Jesus' death and resurrection has assured their fate. The enemy which I
describe is devious and sinister. It lives within us and is glorified all around us. I urge you to join the
resistance against pride.
Pride vs. Humility
It is impossible to truly know Jesus without a certain level of humility. If we don't acknowledge our
sin, we never know our need for the forgiveness Jesus has won for us on the cross. This is only the
beginning of our humble walk behind Jesus. Jesus teaches and models humility for us because at any
moment, our pride and self-sufficiency can upend our humility, putting us out in front of Jesus. Once
in front of Jesus, we feel the sense of power and authority that comes with self-leadership. Others
must fall in line behind us. We feel as if we can do anything. We become the center of our universe...
and it must stay that way. The problem is, if it does stay that way, we leave Jesus behind... perhaps
forever.
The Destructive Doctrine of Self-Esteem
The enemy has infiltrated our homes, our schools, our churches and more. For example, look at how
we teach self-esteem in our society. From a very young age, we are taught to be self-sufficient and
confident and that we should view ourselves as intrinsically worthy and good and deserving of
happiness. As a result of this dangerous doctrine, any criticism that comes to a child or even an adult
must be tempered so as not to injure their self-esteem. To retain one's pride is more valuable than
anything. At the very least we must retain the outward impression of self-esteem. Inside, the reality is
not so confident. While we wear the mask of intrinsic worth and goodness and entitlement on the
outside, we realize inside that none of it is true. "If they would really know who I am, then nobody
would like me." News Flash: Teen suicide rates are at record highs. Usually, low self-esteem is
prominently listed among the causes. My question is simple. Who told them self-esteem was so
important? The enemy.
The Redeeming Doctrine of God-Esteem
The doctrine of self-esteem flies in the face of the truth. We are so much less than we should
be. Worthy? We did nothing to make this world, nothing to be born, nothing to make the food we
eat and the list goes on. We deserve nothing. God gives it all by his grace. Good? While there may
be reflections of God's good intent, we are not good. Our desires and thoughts are evil. Entitled to
happiness? We are entitled to nothing but to perpetuate this broken world for another generation,
making the same mistakes as those before us and dying in disgrace. Self-esteem is a lie. God-esteem
is truth. Listen to Jesus:
"Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near." Matthew 4:17
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who
mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the
earth." Matthew 5:3-5 continued on next page
PAGE 3 “… MAKING DISCIPLES FOR JESUS CHRIST”
The more I read God’s Holy Word, the more I realize that love is God’s
supreme attribute. And behind every dealing, God has with us His perfect love. It
was love that made Him create us, and it was love that caused Him to send His
Son to redeem us. His love pursues us and draws us to Himself and His love will
someday take us into His presence forever.
Human love may change or fade. God’s love will never change or fade. He
says to us, “I have loved you with an everlasting love, I have drawn you with loving
kindness.” Jeremiah 31:3.
God’s love has provided the way of redemption through Christ.
I can actually see God’s love here at Bethel Lutheran Church and we love
coming together and worshipping our Lord.

"If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow
me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it."
Matthew 16:24-25
"For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted."
Matthew 23:12
So do we end up being worthless good-for-nothing mooches? No! We don't look within to find our
value. God has esteemed us through Jesus' death and resurrection. We are worth everything to our
Creator. Our goodness is a gift God keeps on giving. Our entitlement is eternal life with the one
who sacrificed everything for the ones he esteemed.
Join the Resistance!
So, be who you are. Join the resistance against pride and be humble. Resist self-esteem. We are
poor, miserable sinners who God esteems by the blood of Jesus! Who needs anything more than
that? We don't direct our lives, Jesus does! That's what it means to follow him. Put others above
yourself. Seek good for others, even those who despise you. Do your job and don't complain. Love
the unlovable. Seek the Kingdom of God and stand for God's truth even if it hurts. Humility is the
key and when God's people are humble they cannot be defeated! That's because Jesus goes ahead
and Jesus has already won the victory. Get behind Jesus. Join the resistance!
Enjoy the convenience of electronic giving: Bethel offers electronic
giving, which allows you to make donations on a scheduled,
automatic basis. If you are writing checks and preparing envelopes
every week, you will especially appreciate electronic giving. It is convenient for you and provides
much-needed donation consistency for Bethel. To set up donations from either a
checking or savings account, complete the authorization form available in the church
office. Or contact your bank for automatic withdrawals to Bethel.
PAGE 4 BETHEL BANNER
We are encouraged in Scripture to do good. We are charged by Christ to love in the face of
hate and to repay evil with good. Here in 1 Peter we are told to “revere Christ as Lord” in our
heart. What does it mean to revere Christ as Lord and what does it have to do with our
eagerness to do good?
After encouraging Christians to do good, this letter addresses the reality that, as strange as it
sounds, some will suffer for doing good. We are not to let the suffering get the best of us but
are to set Christ apart as Lord in our hearts. When Christ is Lord in our hearts he is at the
center of our lives. With our priorities straight we are willing to suffer for good knowing that
Christ suffered on the cross for the good of all humanity. As it says, “For Christ also suffered
once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.”
In Psalm 56, we read:
“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.
In God, whose word I praise—
in God I trust and am not afraid.
What can mere mortals do to me?”
I challenge us to be vigilant and look for opportunities to
do good and love others. There are times in this life
when we will suffer for doing good, but take heart
because God is with us. Set Christ apart as Lord in your
heart and be ready to give an answer for the hope that
you have in Him. You are blessed when you suffer. Don’t
let fear stop us from sharing the love and truth of Jesus!

PAGE 5 “… MAKING DISCIPLES FOR JESUS CHRIST”
Christian stewardship is the free and joyous activity of the child of God and God’s family, the
Church, in managing life and all of life’s resources for God’s purpose.
Personal finances can be a touchy subject. We are each in different
places financially for different reasons. Many among us are struggling
financially, and the causes may be of our own doing or may be due to a
misfortune over which we had no control. Others among us have more
than sufficient financial resources. Money and even wealth is not in itself
bad, no more than food is bad. The biblical prophets rail against the rich,
not specifically because they are rich, but because they are rich and
oblivious. The rich man in Jesus’ parable in Luke 16:19-31 is doomed to
eternal torment because he was luxuriously rich and completely oblivious to
the destitute Lazarus lying just outside. One wonders how things would
have turned out if just one of those at the rich man’s feast had called his attention to the poor man at the
gate.
Great things have been and are being accomplished when people use their wealth for the good of
all. “I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans
to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:1`1). There are countless real-life examples of allowing
money to flow to and through our lives in ways that nourish our world and us. For example, donations to
Bethel have allowed our congregation to make disciples for Jesus Christ in our church, neighborhood and
world. Taking a biblical approach to money is about putting God’s principles into practice so that his
purposes for your life and the money He entrusts to you are fulfilled. The challenge is to maintain a
balanced relationship with money in a way that leaves you free to hear and respond to God’s call on your
life.
Our personal financial health is an important dimension of our overall health in faith. To put our
finances in order, we have to order our lives and priorities, as well. Personal financial health is best
achieved in the same way as personal physical health: develop good daily habits and have an annual
check-up. Good habits include basics like preparing a budget so that we live within our means, saving,
giving, paying debts on time and continuing to learn about financial issues. “If you have not been
trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you in handling true riches?” (Luke 16:11).
Our personal financial health matters. Being financially healthy frees us to live a productive and
joyful life in service to God. We are stewards, on behalf of God, of all that we have and all that we are.
Stewardship is not a program. It is a way of life!
In the service of our Lord, Financial Stewardship

Schmalz, Tim Goebel, Sean Boll,
Lynne Rustad, Bryan Marshall,
Jordan Ray, Tricia Bluhm,
Adrienne Vandercar, Mike Head,
Jordan Ray, Nic Cass, and Anna

Minutes from the March LT
mtg were approved via email.
The April budget meeting was
prefaced with a meal, provided
by the Rustads, and field worker
Nic Cass led mealtime prayer.
Leadership Team President Dave
Rustad called the meeting to
order. Pastor Seabaugh began
with devotion and prayer.
2013-2014 Budget
Bryan Marshall handed out and
explained budget worksheets.
The Leadership Team discussed
passing a policy about setting a
threshold/limit for borrowing
money between the general fund
and specified funds. Currently,
money is being borrowed from
specified giving to pay for
operating expenses. Based on
projected contributions, the
Stewardship Committee
recommended that no raises be
given this year to Bethel staff.
Discussed adding a new item to
the budget for Christian
education – buying resources for
parents that will help them teach
Christian education in a home
setting, as proposed by Pastor
Seabaugh.
Discussion about educating the
congregation about stewardship.
How can we be more intentional
about witnessing the spiritual
benefit of giving? How to
address the congregation about
increasing giving, which is
needed to meet this year’s
budget. It was proposed to
challenge the congregation to
increase their overall giving –
even just a 5 percent increase
would enable us to cover our
expenses and provide raises for
staff next year.
Pastor Seabaugh expressed hope
that, as a Leadership Team and
as a congregation, we focus
more intentional prayers regard-
ing the budget. He referenced
Matthew 6:33 – “Seek first his
kingdom and his righteousness,
and all these things will be given
to you as well.”
Motion was made that the
budget as proposed at
$304,574 be presented to the
congregation along with an
explanation of the salary
freezes. Motion was seconded
and carried.
Old Business: CLS Update
•Tim Goebel gave a summary of
the most recent CLS board meet-
ing. An informational meeting is
planned for 7 pm on May 14 with
the governing boards from all of
the CLS association churches and
the CLS board to discuss
concerns regarding the school’s
financial standing.
•Tim Goebel expressed grave
concern that although the school
recently closed on an $810,000
refinance loan, which was
supposed to pay off all creditors
and bring everything up to date,
he got an email from the CLS
Treasurer stating that the school
still has an outstanding balance
of $47,460. Tim said there was
supposed to be about $9,000 left
over from the loan for a bonus to
the staff, who has not received
raises or an increase in pay in
many years.
•Pastor made a recommendation
that the CLS discussion be tabled
until the next Leadership Team
meeting. Some staffing changes
at CLS may change the outlook
by that time. He stated that it is
important that the Bethel LT ask
questions of the other
association churches. He further
recommended that
representatives of Bethel come
with a positive spirit, and show
self-restraint and self-control in
their speech and action. Pastor
stated: “Seek His righteousness,
and not our own. We will trust
that God will provide, and
whatever the outcome, we will
know that we were sitting in that
meeting representing the
kingdom of God.”
Field worker Anna Reincke
ended the mtg with prayer.
May LT meeting will be at 6:30
pm on Thursday, May 16, 2013.

PAGE 11 “… MAKING DISCIPLES FOR JESUS CHRIST”
“Come to me, all you who are weary
and burdened, and I will give you
rest. Take my yoke upon you and
learn from me, for I am gentle and
humble in heart, and you will find rest
for your souls. For my yoke is easy
and my burden is light.”
Matthew 11:28-30
