TERRAZZO WAS FORMEDVenetian marble workers would re-use marble pieces from existing
slabs for the surfaces of their homes.

Soon, the workers began to rub the surfaces with hand stones to achieve
a smoother finish.

TERRAZZO MADE EASYAs time passed, workers developed new techniques. They created a tool
called the Galera. The Galera allowed workers to fasten stones to the
end of a long handle, allowing them to work more comfortably.

To display the color of the marble chips, they used goat milk as a sealer.

Terrazzo began to expand to other regions of the
world. The United States welcomed terrazzo during
the late 1700s.
Today you can find terrazzo in monuments like Mt.
Vernon and the Hoover Dam.

NEW BEGINNINGS

Soon beauty followed to go along with terrazzo's
durability. New installation technique involved
the use of strips to divide colors and control
shrinkage in the terrazzo topping. Marble dust
was added to the mix to provide additional
colors and thickness as well.
Today installers can use brass, aluminum and
zinc divider strips. Water jet machines can cut
intricate graphics to be added to the floor's
design.
DESIGN STEPS IN

HIGH-POWERED TECHToday you won't be seeing any installer holding a Galera. That is
because grinding equipment provided more efficiency in grinding and
polishing a terrazzo floor.

New cleaners and sealers were developed to enhance the beauty of
terrazzo.

EVOLVING TODAYOver the last century, the terrazzo industry
has found new developments in epoxies,
acrylics and polyester. Thin-set epoxy has
become the most durable terrazzo system
today. Terrazzo even goes beyond the
interior use. Rustic terrazzo can create a
unique surface on the exterior of a building.
Bottom Line: Terrazzo is dynamic.
