IMPORTANTWhen receiving Holy Communion in the hand, YOU MUST CONSUME THE HOST IMMEDIATELY,before you turn away from the minister. It is NOT acceptable to walk away and then consume.

As a sign of respect for Our Lord, YOU SHOULD NEVER RECEIVE THE HOST WITH ONE HAND. If a disability prevents you from receiving with both hands, you should receive the Sacrament on the tongue.

“What did you think, O Immaculata, when for the

fi rst time you laid the Divine Child onto that little bed of hay? What feelings fl ooded

your heart while you wrapped Him in swaddling clothes,

held Him to your heart, and fed Him from your breasts? ...

What feelings of humility, love and gratitude must have fi lled

your heart at that time... as you marveled at the humility, love and gratitude that God incarnate had toward you. I

beg you, fi ll my heart too with your humility, your love, your

gratitude.” (#1236)

Excerpts from The Writings of St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe

of St. Maximilian

P R A Y E RLet us pray that all those who serve may always be faithful

witnesses of Christ's love and examples of charity and

compassion.

Fr. Benedict M. La Volpe, OFM CONV.Guardian & Rector of Marytown

from the pen of

Dear Pilgrims to the National Shrine of St. Maximilian Kolbe at Marytown,

In 1989, Pope St. John Paul II gave the Church an Apostolic Exhortation on the life and mission of St. Joseph entitled Redemptoris Custos, Guardian of the Redeemer.

In speaking of St. Joseph as Guardian of the Mystery of God, Pope John Paul II helps us to understand this role in union with the role of the Blessed Mother. He writes:

Therefore he became a unique guardian of the mystery “hidden for ages in God” (Eph 3:9), as did Mary, in that decisive moment which St. Paul calls “the fullness of time,” when "God sent forth his Son, born of woman...to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons" (Gal 4:4-5). In the words of the Council: “It pleased God, in his goodness and wisdom, to reveal himself and to make known the mystery of his will (cf. Eph 1:9). His will was that men should have access to the Father, through Christ, the Word made fl esh, in the Holy Spirit, and become sharers in the divine nature (cf. Eph 2:18; 2 Pt 1 4).”

Together with Mary, Joseph is the fi rst guardian of this divine mystery. Together with Mary, and in relation to Mary, he shares in this fi nal phase of God's self-revelation in Christ and he does so from the very beginning. Looking at the gospel texts of both Matthew and Luke, one can also say that Joseph is the fi rst to share in the faith of the Mother of God and that in doing so he supports his spouse in the faith of the divine annunciation. He is also the fi rst to be placed by God on the path of Mary’s “pilgrimage of faith” It is a path along which—especially at the time of Calvary and Pentecost—Mary will precede in a perfect way (RC #5).”

Let us never forget the role, the importance, and indeed the centrality of St. Joseph, particularly during this Advent season, where “St. Joseph was called by God to serve the person and mission of Jesus directly through the exercise of his fatherhood (RC #8).”

Yours in the United Hearts of Jesus and Mary!

The History of The Twelve Days of Christmas

The song, The Twelve Days of Christmas is an old English Christmas carol. From 1558 until 1829, Roman

Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics. It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of the Church. Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality which the children could remember. To fi t the number scheme, when you reach number 9, representing the Fruits of the Holy Spirit, the originator combined 6 to make 3, taking the 6 fruits that were similar: the fruit in each parenthesis is the that was not named separately. There are actually Twelve Fruits of the Holy Spirit.

The “True Love” one hears in the song is not a smitten boy or girlfriend but Jesus Christ, because truly Love was born on Christmas Day. The partridge in the pear tree also represents Him because that bird is willing to sacrifi ce its life if necessary to protect its young by feigning injury to draw away predators. by Fr. Calvin Goodwin, FSSP, Nebraska

A God Merciful and Gracious

The divine name, “I Am” or “He Is”, expresses God’s faithfulness: despite the faithlessness of men's sin and the punishment it deserves, he keeps “steadfast love

for thousands”. By going so far as to give up his own Son for us, God reveals that he is “rich in mercy”. By giving his life to free us from sin, Jesus reveals that he himself bears the divine name: “When you have lifted up the Son of man, then you will realize that ‘I AM’ (CCC 211)”.
