Penny SaverBerkshireCommunity Health Programs (CHP) Nutrition Services is pleased to announce that Robert Hoechster has

joined the team of Nutritionists. He specializes in children's nutrition and teaches the CHP-WIC Kid's Kitchen classes, a popular program that benefits children (ages 2-1/2 to 5 years) enrolled in the WIC program.

Hoechster obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Nutrition Science and is a Registered Dietician. He worked previously at the New York Presbyterian Hospital providing nutrition counseling and education services for children and adolescents, and most recently as a Nutritionist at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, Massachusetts. "Robert joins us for the launch of a new comprehensive nutrition program that integrates nutrition counsel-ing with physical activity and cooking classes, with an emphasis on developing a healthy relationship to food," said Peter Stanton, Director of CHP's Nutrition Services program. "He brings his experience and expertise to this program, joining a pediatrician, an exercise instructor, and a behavior specialist. This program will address specific nutrition concerns such as weight management," Stanton explained. In addition to nutrition for children, Hoechster provides inpatient nutrition services at Fairview Hospital as part of the CHP/Fairview Hospital Nutrition Collaborative, and individual counseling for adults at CHP Nutrition Services at 94 West Ave. in Great Barrington. Community Health Programs (CHP) Nutrition Services is once again offering their popular After School Kids' Kitchen classes for 5-12 year olds beginning Wednesday, January 7th at the CHP Nutrition Center, 94 West Avenue, Great Barrington, MA. The program will run continuously throughout the winter. New participants are welcomed throughout the course.

The Kid's Kitchen features hands-on food preparation and tasting experiences. During the process kids learn about nutritional facts, food safety, making healthy balanced food choices, and the value of local farms in our community.

“This after-school program is so much more than just a cooking and nutrition class,” said Robert Hoechster, CHP Nutritionist and teacher of the class. “It is about children building positive, lifelong relationships with food, with themselves, and with their community.”

On Saturday, January 3 at 4 p.m., Berkshire South Community Center is presenting the first of the Outdoor Classroom Series “To the Top of the World and Back: Summiting Mt. Everest” with Chuck Boyd in the Jaffe Auditorium. The Outdoor Classroom series is a fun mix of off-site and on-site explorations, lectures and citizen science projects are incorporated into each season over the 6 month program span to allow the chance for participants to experience the Berkshires at its best.

Chuck Boyd will present a slideshow filled with pictures of his trip and tell the amazing story of his 2004 Mount Everest Summit Expedition. Chuck, a great story teller offers a multimedia presentation which allows the audience to see the wonder that is Everest, understand the strength it takes to make the climb, and see the actual equipment he used for his 2004 trek! Farmers across Massachusetts who are interested in becoming more energy efficient are invited to apply for a new Audits and Incentives Program offered by the Massachusetts Farm Energy Program (MFEP). The program will provide energy audits, renewable energy assessments, and financial incentives for implementation of audit recommendations, including those recommended by public utility programs. __The MFEP has negotiated with energy consultants to provide audits and assessments to farmers at a lower cost than they would pay on their own, and to provide funding so farmers will only be responsible for 25 percent of the cost. Currently, farms served by municipal utilities do not have access to a free energy audit.

Although farms served by public utilities can receive a free energy audit, those audits do not address other fuels such as heating oil and propane which account for the majority of energy use on many farms. The MFEP will provide auditing services to fill these gaps.

In addition, the MFEP will pay incentives of up to $7,500 for implementation of recommended measures, with greater incentives to farms with less access to other audits and incentives programs. Incentives are based on energy savings for fuel oil, propane, electricity, and natural gas.

Energy Incentives for Massachusetts Farmers

The 2009 Berkshire International Film Festival (BIFF) is pleased to announce the call for submissions for feature, documentary and short films. The BIFF also opens submissions for the third annual Berkshire Student Film Festival Competition (BSFF) which showcases the film making talents from Berkshire high school students.

The 2009 festival will be held May 14 - 17, 2009 at the Triplex Cinema, the historical Mahaiwe Theatre and other venues throughout Great Barrington.

The submissions deadline is March 1, 2009. The 2009 festival will mark the fourth annual event and plans to showcase nearly 70 of the best films that are currently being produced in independent film making. Winter Trails Day takes place on Saturday, January 10 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Notchview, Windsor, and is part of the “Winter Feels Good” cam-paign to get people outdoors for exercise and fun in the winter. Free, two-hour snowshoe rentals and trail passes for those who'd like to try skiing or snowshoeing. For skiers, we'll offer free Nordic lessons- classical or skating style- at different experience levels and a wax clinic. Watch a skijoring demonstration or join in other winter fun activities. Join the Berkshire Botanical Society on Saturday, January 10 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. for a hands-on workshop in grafting. The most challeng-ing and rewarding propagating technique, grafting will be the focus of this workshop. Consider the history and fundamental principles of grafting plants and then learn by practicing grafting techniques. Watch a demonstration of different grafts and practice the most common and easiest side-veneer graft. Work with both conifers (pine) and deciduous plants (Japanese maple or kousa dogwood) and take several plants home to grow on. Participants should bring pruners and a grafting knife if available.

Instructor Adam Wheeler is the Propagation and New Plant Development Manager for Broken Arrow Nursery located in Hamden, Ct. a specialty nursery with a focus on woody plants, especially kalmias. He teaches woody plant propagation workshops throughout New England.

For those looking to kick the smoking habit once and for all, Berkshire Medical Center offers a smoking cessation program to start the New Year. The BMC program meets on consecutive Thursdays for a five-week period. The program includes the availability of nicotine replacement therapy. Pre-registration for the classes is required. The classes are for any smoker who has been trying to cut down or quit altogether and can't do it alone.

The smoking cessation program at Berkshire Medical Center will be offered on Thursdays, from January 8th to February 5th from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Hillcrest Campus of Berkshire Medical Center, 165 Tor Court.
