Development partnership -more than just a slogan

Technical advisers, process engineersand development staff in the electro-plating division at DODUCO recommend

ways of customizing coating technolo-gies to the requirements of our custo-mers latest products. In doing so, bothtechnical and economic aspects aretaken into account and discussed withthe customer in advance. Together with

the customer, we clarify any issues rela-ted to the design principle of the productto be coated, the mechanical and elec-trical requirements, the choice of suitablepre-treatment, the layers to be appliedand the sequence in which they shouldbe applied, the required layer thicknes-ses, the effects of the technologies usedon subsequent stages of processing andthe effects and influences caused by theambient atmosphere. During this proce-dure it always transpires that there are anumber of different layer systems thatcan be used in the subsequent projectand these options then have to beindividually tested and researched byDODUCO and/or the customer toestablsh their suitability.

At an early point during the cooperationbetween the customer and DODUCO,the from of delivery between the twoparties is agreed upon. Here, too, requi-rements relating to purity and cleanliness(e.g. suitability for clean room conditions)

with regard to the product to be coatedand the surface and the type andmethod of packaging used by DODUCO

    are established.

After the coating or coating variants and,if necessary the workpiece holder, too, have been determined in consultation

with the customer, our project manage-ment team takes on the task of schedu-ling and coordinatin the project. The aimis to find a layering system which fulfils allthe customers requirements with regard

to the product and ist workability. Solu-tions are always arrived at with a view tokeeping costs down and quality high.

The project management team acts asthe interface between the customer andthe production and development

    Project management

departments, suppliers, the differentlaboratories and Quality Assurance, andremains the central point of contactthroughout the entire implementationphase of the project. The team coordi-nates the technical variants as well asdeadlines, costs and any further measu-res which may arise from the results ofthe work on the various coating variants.

All date pertaining to the project isdocumented in transparent detail.

The results obtained for the variouscoating variants are passed on to thecustomer and the results of any trialscarried out by the customer are madeavailable to DODUCO for furtheroptimization.

Once the most suitable coating has beenestablished, a sample is prepared forapproval by the customer before formingthe basis for series production.

    Coating of technical components

    Plating of metalstrips

    Specialcoatings

Our areas of expertise include plating a wide variety of metallic materials both with precious metals such as gold, sil- ver, palladium and rhodium as well as with base metals such as tin, tin/lead,chemically applied and electrolytic nickelcoating and electrolytic copper plating.

In addition to the conventional substratematerials of copper and copper alloys,

we can also apply strongly bonded coa-tings to aluminum, high-alloy steels as

well as to more specialized materials.

Strips can be solid, pre-stamped or belt-linked. Strips and stamped parts madeof copper and copper alloys, nickel andnickel alloys, stainless steel or berylli-um/bronze and can be coated additio-nally hardened or annealed.

Electroplating is used for fine and hardgold, silver, palladium/nickel, copper andnickel as well as pure tin and tin/leadalloys. In addition, metal strips can alsobe hot-dip tinned.

These include plating with special mate-rials such as molybdenum, molybde-num/copper, tungsten, tungsten/copper,

AlSiC and die-cast zinc as well as ouractivities in the area of selective plating,

which represents a low-cost solutionsince it enables the amount of preciousmetal deposited to be reduced to thatneeded to coat the required surfaceonly.

The selective deposition of preciousmetal on to individual parts is achievedby using special masks and maskingtechniques.

    Development

    Analysis and laborarory

DODUCOs development goals arebased on the dictated of the market andthe requirements of our customers. Here the main focus is on the search forinnovative, environmentallyfriendly solu-tions and simpler, more stable processes. Our experienced development teamoptimizes and develops electrolytic andchemical products in the light of currentand future market demands. Even spe-cialized customer requirements areincorporated into our development work.Development projects also draw on theexpertise of our own analytical andmaterials labs. A distinct advantage of thisis the gradual testing of the productsunder development from laboratory scaleand pilot plant to full implementationunder production conditions in our ownelectroplating plants. This means that it isnot left up to the customer to acquire theexperience that must be gained prior tocommencing series production, but thatthis is done in our own production de-partment. This is a significant advantagefor our customers.

The actual work of the developer starts inthe chemical development lab. Initialsupport comes from the analytical lab,

which is also at the disposal of our custo-mers. For example, this is where elec-trolytes are analyzed by means of atomicabsorption spectroscopy, ICP-OES orHPLC. These processes are used todetermine whether the constituentcomponents lie within the prescribedlimits or whether the composition of agiven alloy conforms to the prescribedspecification. The results aredocumented. Regularly performed, precise analytical techniques are crucial

to the subsequent development work andfor the effectiveness on the processesdeveloped.

Once the first parts have been coated, the properties of the layers are assessedand measured for the first time. There area variety of measurement techniques thatcan be used for this, depending on theparameters specified. These methodsrange from the non-destructive measure-ment of the brightness or reflectivity of the

layer depositied and measuring itsmechanical properties to more involvedstructural inspections using a scanningelectron microscope and EDX probe. Theculmination of each development projectis the release of a product or an entireprocess for series production.

Thisincludes precious metal baths, salts, concentrates and preparations as well asnon-precious metal baths, products andprocesses for PCB technology andsurface treatment products such asmetal strippers, cleaning solutions andsilver antitarnish protection.

DODUCO has a variety of sputteringplants to suit different workpiecegeometries.

By using product-specific holders and a variety of planetary drives, a uniform

coating can be applied, regardless of whether the surface is coated completelyor selectively.

The PVD process gives an extremelyuniform coating thickness and anexcellent adhesion. Furthermore, thelayers can subsequently be reinforcedthrough electroplating.

    Barrel plating

    Rack plating

    PCB technology

Bulk items can be plated with manydifferent combinations of layers of varyingthicknesses. In each case, the mostsuitable electroplating unit and productionline are chosen to match the geometry ofthe parts and the batch size.

New products and parts with complexgeometries impose special demands onthe production of workpiece racks and

jigs to ensure that the required layerthickness is deposited even on lessaccessible areas of the product. To meetthis requirement, DODUCO has its ownrack and jig construction department.

DODUCO offers customers from thePCB industry a comprehensive range ofsurfaces for printed circuit boards. Highlyefficient plants are available which ensureconsistent quality and short delivery timesfor the externally electroless andelectrolytic plating of rigid, semirigid andflexible circuit boards. Each process canhandle all common formats up to610 x 605 mm. Maximum flexibility in

terms of the layer thicknesses that canbe deposited and the formats that canbe plated make DODUCO the idealpartner for PCB manufacturers for whomit is not economical to plate circuit boardsas part of their own production process.
