The literal meaning of theterm ‘Upanishad’ is “sitting near”or “sitting close to”, and listeningto the mystic teachings from ateacher, who has understood thefundamental truths of the creationand its order in the quietude offorest ‘ashrams’ or hermitages. In another sense, ‘Upanishad’means Brahma-Jnana by whichignorance is overcome. They impart both spiritual visionand philosophical argument.Upanishads give us the essenceof the philosophical thoughts ofVedas.

Purpose of the conference

In a life riddled withcontradictions, the purposeof any spiritual endeavour will beto add meaning to day to dayactivities and improve the qualityof living in today’s stress riddenenvironment. Our ancient sagesforesaw such a need and in every

text they tried to communicatephilosophical detachment inresults while having fullcommitment in the proposeof executing our actions.

For the Indian Sages, the purpose of writing was notmerely communication of therelationship of the individual withGod but to educate the commonman in society on carrying out theactions with dexterity andeffectiveness as BhagavanKrishna says in Gita – YogahKarmasu Kaushalam and alsoseek true knowledge which wouldbenefit the individual and society.

Our scriptures areenlightened expressions ofexceptionally seeking minds inquest of ‘Sat’ or truth. From theVedas evolved the Upanishads, whose copious enquiries into thenature of man, the Universe, andGod, make us think and question. The intellectual conversations ofthe Sages brought out differentschools of thought, defining every

aspect of life as we see –education, science, societalthinking, psychology, literature, personality development, ethicsin life laced with spiritualteachings.

In a society riddled withfactionalism, it is only theunderstanding of the thought of‘Ekam Sat Vipraa bahudaVadanti’ and VasudhaivaKutumbakam that can drivesense.

Our sages spoke of thetwin sciences of astronomy andastrology. They probed into thehuman frame for the welfare ofthe body. They gave us thescience of yoga for the health ofthe mind, and the Tantra Sastra tounravel the psychic forces in thehuman being.

They framed out regulationsto guide man’s conduct in society,Sutras to guide the conduct ofhouse-holders, and a uniquescience for the material andspiritual attainment of individualand societal prosperity. Theyembedded into their writingsvarious aspects like the laws oftown-planning, architecture, sculpture and enunciated theprinciples of music, dance andliterature.
