Linseed blue is pretty in the countryside; it is a sustainable and ethical way to get omega 3.

We are designed to get our oil from nuts and seed and plants, so linseed is very natural for us

and works with our body to keep us well.

Linseed flapjacks Really good for lunchboxes!

Try them soon - they are healthy and filling; one tray makes at least a dozen great bars.

Melt 280g butter with 70g syrup. Mix in 210g sugar, 280g oats, 187g High Barn milled Linseed

Meal. Spread into 12"x 8" tray and bake for 20mins (approx)

at 170°C (fan oven) until lightly browned.

Visit my web site www.highbarnoils.co.uk for more information. I give talks to groups about linseed, flax and

fats.

The Scouting and Guiding movements in Billingshurst continue to grow, with the

census figures for the year up on last year’s! Units are running to full capacity, with

several having waiting lists, including the older sections ~ the Scouts and Guides

Members of the Group are still working successfully towards awards and badges

appropriate to the sections and ages. This year two Scouts achieved the Chief Scout

Gold award, which is the highest a Scout can achieve within the Group. They were

presented with the award at their summer camp at Broadstone Warren. Two Guides

gained their Baden Powell award, again the highest a Guide can achieve in the

Company. One chose to have her award presented during a visit to London and the

other had hers presented at the Headquarters during a company meeting. Cubs and

Beavers have also achieved Chief Scout silver and bronze awards respectively. In

addition to the achievements mentioned above, all sections continue to gain interest

badges, which shows the high level of leadership offered to our young people ~

without dedicated leaders these achievements just wouldn’t happen!

As always, the programmes the units enjoy and wide and varied, including those in the

HQ, outside around and about the village and visits to places of interest. Camping and

sleepovers feature heavily in the activities of all sections ~ always popular with the

young people!

We are continuing with fund raising towards the complete refurbishment of the toilet

facilities in our Headquarters and have received welcome donations and/or promises

of support from local organisations, two of which are present today ~ the local Rotary

and Lions! Many thanks to them.

Both Scouting and Guiding in the village need more adults to come forward to assist in

the running of our Units, either as a uniformed leader or as a regular helper. You will

see on the ground recruitment appeals so please do consider whether or not you

could give some time to helping the young people of Billingshurst. I know that either

Tracey Parker or Steve Stocker will be very happy to talk to you about any time you

could give and what is involved for you. PLEASE give one of them a call on 01403-

820256 or 01403-780443.

cceelleebbrraatteess 110000 yyeeaarrss!! This year Girlguiding UK celebrates its centenary and already lots of exciting things have

taken place across the country for its members, both past and present.

In September 1909 a group of girls presented themselves at the Boy Scout Rally at Crystal

Palace and told Robert Baden-Powell that they too were Scouts ~ Girl Scouts! This led to

the forming of the Girl Guides in 1910, which has developed into the movement we know

today, 100 years on. To mark the Crystal Palace Rally, the centenary celebrations kicked off

right across the UK over the weekend of 9/10 September 2009, with launch parties of all

types and sizes.

In our area, members of Girlguiding met up at Lodge Hill near Pulborough for a day of fun

and activities, ranging from the quieter craft type to the adventurous ones on high ropes,

low ropes and orienteering to the instruction in circus skills. The latter was particularly

enjoyed from the youngest members to the more mature among us!

Many of the activities for the year are mooted from national headquarters, but planned and

carried out more locally. For instance, during May Brownies right across the country “took

to the tracks” and commandeered various railways! In West Sussex, the Brownies enjoyed a

day at the Bluebell Railway and had rides on a specially commissioned steam train with a

picnic lunch in the middle of the day, followed by street dancing and singing. The day was

rounded off with ice cream and a goodie bag for each girl who attended. Although it was an

exhausting day for the adults, all agreed it had been thoroughly worthwhile.

Later this year the Rainbows, the youngest section, will be going wild and in West Sussex

this will be a takeover at Drusillas Zoo. The Senior Section have already had an exciting

weekend, called “Capital Jig” when they visited many European capital cities and last

weekend the Guides had a fun filled day entitled “I’m a Guide, get me out of here” when

they enjoyed non-stop activities over the course of a day ~ exhausting, but again very

worthwhile for those involved.

In addition to the nationally planned events, in our District a camp is to be held where all

members will be able to attend, if not actually camping then as a day visitor. Possibly a

report on this will be included in next year’s programme!

As you can see, the centenary year has already been filled with lots of events that hopefully

our members will remember for a long time ~ after all none of us is likely to be around to

celebrate the next 100 years in 2110! However the culmination of the year will be on 20

October at ten minutes past eight in the evening, which translates into

20:10 20/10 2010

when right across the U K members of Girlguiding will renew the Promise they made when

first joining the movement. All sorts of celebrations are already in the planning stages and

our District will be having a party at Wisborough Green village hall. However, at the

moment, just what else will be on offer has yet to be revealed!
