    Milton Nascimento

    Milon Nascimeno was born on October 26, 1942. He lived the firs

    two years of his life in Rio de Janeiro In 1945, his ife was turned

    uside down when hs mother died of uberculosis The little boy

    moved to litle rs Ponas, a ciy beween he mountains and hesouth of the sate of Minas Gerais, where he came to live with the

    couple who would become his parens, Llia and Josino In spite of

    facing prejudice for being a black child raised by a white family, Milton

    Nascimento had a hapy childhood in the countryside of Minas

    Gerais, surrounded by friends, surrounded by music. At five years of

    age, he received a harmonica from his parens and, a little later, a

    small accordion. His favorie astime was o si on the steps of the

    porch and play these wo insruments, and it was on that sme porch

    tha he ook his firs seps oward becoming a composer, creating

    muscal stories to amuse his friends and neighbors One of those

    compadres, Wagner iso, became hs grea friend and usical

    parner while sill a eenager.

    ogeher, Nascimeno and iso made up the vocal group Luar de

    Prata ("Slver Moonligh) hat performed at dances and on the radios

    of the owns of the region. The group became Milon Nascimento and

    His Combo, and, a he beginning of the 1960s, Nascimento and Tisoformed W'Boys in Alfenas, also in the south of Minas Gerais. They

    were so successful that they were invited to take part in the Holliday

    Combo in Bel Horizone In 963, upon finishing a technical course

    in business that he began after high school, Nascimeno moved to

    Bel Horizone and ook up residence in a rented room in the Levy

    Building, where he me the Borges family. Beynd the Holliday, he

    became a member of the Clio Baon a dance combo. What he earned

    from his music, however, was not enough to suppor him in the city.

    In 1964, wih Wagner Tiso and Paulinho Braga, Nascimento formed the

    Berimbau Trio, i which he sarred as the bassist During a breakbeween sets wih the group, he met Mrci Borges, who encouraged

    him to become a composer Nascimento resised, and, only after

    watching the Franois Truffau film Jules et Jim three imes in a row,

    composed his first hree compositions wih Mrci: "Crena, "Novena,

    and "Gira Girou. Sill in this period, he recorded he single "Barulho de

    re with the Holliday Band and the LP Quareto Sambacana with

    Pacfico Mascarenhas n 1966, he took par in the TV xcelsior Music

    Festival in So Pauo, performing Cidade Vazia by Baden Powell and

    Lula Freire He took fourth place and decided o move to that city. In

    that same year, Elis Regina recorded Cano do Sal.

    Disappointed by the compeitive amoshere of the fesivals, Milton

    Nascimento never ook part in another one, but in 1967 he me singer

    Agostinho dos Santos. Under the pretext of recording a record of his

    own, Agostinho asked his new friend for a ape with hree songs and

    entered him in he second International Song Fesival All three songs

    made i into the contest Nascimeno won Best Inerpreation, and one

    of he songs, "Travessia, came in second, making i one of

    Nascimeno's best-known and ostrecorded songs both in Brazil and

    abroad. From there, Nascimento's career took off The Mineiro (native

    of Minas Gerais) who had made his debut on he sage of the

    International Song Festival because of his three qualifying songs left it

    as a heavyweight in Brazilian music with a contrac to record albums in

    Brazil and the United Staes.

    His first albums onfirmed him as an innovative omposer and

    exeptional nterpreter. With his third P, Mton, in 1970, his musi

    got a pop/rok boost from wth the addition of Som lmaginrio, whih

    he aompanied with eletri guitars and keyboards. Two years later,

    his work ulminated in the double album Cube da Esquna The Club

    on the Corner), whh he shared with L Borges and whih ended upbeing alaimed as one of the biggest and ost important

    movements in Brazilian popular musi. In the following years, the

    "/ube expanded to inlude new members, from old friends to

    international stars, inluding Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hanok, James

    Taylor, Jon Anderson, Nan Vasonelos, Ron Carter, Peter Gabriel,

    Pat Metheny, Gil Goldstein, Jak Deohnette, Meredes Sosa, Fito

    Paez, Hubert aw, Sting, Paul Simon, Duran Duran, and Maure

    White from the group arth, Wind & Fire

    In the almos four dedes of his arer sine ravessia, Milton

    Nasimento has proven himself one of the most expressive and

    important omposers and interpreters in Brazil and around the world.

    In 1990, he beame the irst Brazilian to reah the top of the Billboard

    world musi harts with his album Txa and in the two followng years

    he was hosen DownBeat Magazne' World Beat Artist of the Year

    With a Gram my in 1998 for hs CD Nascmento atin Grammies, and

    ountless other important awards in Brazil and abroadsuh as the

    Teno Prize at the San Remo Festival in 2009but mostly for being

    part of the lves and dreams of people in every orner of the world,

    gong where the people are, rootng his musi in the street orners of

    the world and spreading it outward, Milton Nasimento has grown into

    an artist with one of the most sold and fertile stories in ontemporary

    musi, a story still beng told.
