A pollen grainfrom a plant with S1S3 genotype carries twodifferent S haplotype determinants, SCR 1and SCR3, in the pollen coat. When thispollen grain makes contact with the stigmaof a plant with S1S 2 genotype, both pollendeterminants are released and taken into thewall of a papillar cell (the epidermal cell ofthe stigma). There, SCR 1 interacts with theextracellular domain of SRK1, setting off acascade of biochemical reactions (of whichphosphorylation of ARC1 is the only oneknown). The end result is inhibition ofpollen germination. Although SRK1 isshown as a dimer, this may not be its activeform. SCR1 is probably (but not certainly)the ligand of SRK 1. Possible interactionsbetween SRK and SLG, as proposed byTakasaki et al., are not shown.
