Unit 5 Notes:Pedigrees

(1) What Is A Pedigree?

• A chart used to organize and visually display the traits inherited by family members.

• Purpose:– Analyze how traits are passed through the

family.–Make genetic predictions for future offspring.

(2) Parts of a Pedigree

• Square = Male• Circle = Female

• Filled In = Has the trait• Empty = Does not have the trait

• Horizontal Lines connecting square + circle shows marriage / courtship.

• Vertical Lines show offspring/descendents.

• Bottom = Youngest generation• Top = Oldest generation

Attached Ear Lobes = DominantDetached Ear Lobes = Recessive
