Questions
• The usage of ethanol.• The metabolic pathways involved in the synthesis of ethanol.• The enzymes and genes involved in the biosynthesis pathway
of ethanol.• Is E. Coli suitable for biosynthesis of ethanol? • Propose experiments to determine the metabolic fluxes of the
network associated with ethanol .• Propose ways to maximize yield of ethanol .
The usage of ethanol
• Ethanol is a good fuel for internal combustion engines. It is less flammable than gasoline, and water is effective against ethanol fires. Its high octane rating, low pollutant emissions, and lower flammability must be weighed against its lower energy content.
• It is relatively less toxic solvent compared with hazardous solvents such as benzene and chloroform.
• It is the reactant to produce aldehyde or acid.
The metabolic pathways involved in the synthesis of ethanol
• Use KEGG website. http://www.genome.jp/kegg/
• Pick the “KEGG Table of Contents” link.
• Pick “KEGG LIGAND Database” and search ethanol ligand.
• Select “Escherichia coli K-12 MG1655” strain.
